I’ve got a pair of Walmart plants that are doing really well after about a year. Quadrupled in size growing only indoors on a sunny windowsill still in the original pots. Like you said traps are small but a lot of them. Mine weren’t red when new. They have a pink blush to them. They’ve caught a nickel size spider and some gnats all on their own!

The Walmart traps are red just because they are grown in intense lighting, and therefore, need less chlorophyll.

Oh and forgot to mention, those are Dionea Muscupila "Red dragon"
@pershop4950
@pershop4950 2 года назад
@@dylansworldofyoutube9030 They may be "red dragon" variety but how does that explain that they lose such a strong red pigmentation after some time away from the "intense lighting" that they were grown in? I mean, in general, we are told that fly traps turn red if they get sufficient lighting. But wouldn't a red dragon be just a little more red than usual, all the time? Otherwise, how can we know for sure it's a red dragon with just less lighting , or a usual cultivar with more lighting? (other than the case where we know what cultivar it is from the seller and have to keep that label on it to always remember or know)

I think the most critical factor is to just buy the "freshest" fly traps you can find, meaning that you buy them as soon as a store gets a shipment. That's because every day a VFT spends in the store, under store lighting and not under sunlight, is another day it gets weaker. I've been lucky to buy some "fresh" VFTs from Depot that were in great condition. On the other hand, I've seen VFTs at the same Home Depot that looked terrible because they have been sitting there too long. Like a lot of things (certain foods, for example) freshness matters.

Serracenia are super easy to keep compared to flytraps, just put them outside in full sun in a pot of 50% peat 50% sand and keep the bottom of the pot submerged. They've been extensively hybridized in cultivation and there are some amazing hybrid varieties now like "Judith Hindle". They love full sun, aren't too picky about temperature and it's basically impossible to overwater them because they are bog plants (you can kill them by letting them dry out though)

@GOLD, BULLETS & BEANS You.. you can't over water a venus flytrap. They live in a BOG, with fairly stagnant water, with their roots always submerged in water. I'm sure they can rot, if not given the proper airflow, buried too deeply into their sopping sediment, or if they don't get enough light, but they can't really be over watered. You can easily kill them through underwatering though, as their roots need to be constantly at least moist at all times. It might be a lack of light, or use of the wrong kind of water, or possibly using the wrong soil. They're very picky because they live in bogs, where there isn't much nutrients anywhere. They love light, and need peat or long fiber sphagnum moss, and need some kind of water without any minerals, so distilled, rain or RO.
@nicholasholden8139

@GOLD, BULLETS & BEANS They are from southeastern NC and here it is mostly swamp like The Green Swamp or the Waccamaw area.
@rosemiller417
@rosemiller417 2 года назад
Still they don't like to 'swim'. Moist, maybe a small Resevoir in Plate. And, important, Destilled Water/Rainwater only. They hate chalk. And no Nutrients in Soil. They need Special Soil. And they like Air Humidity. Not the Tropics, but nicly high. They never can fall dry. They evolved to 'hunt' cause there nutrient deprived, sour Grounds they thrive on. So they need that low Diet. Don't water them with 'normal' Tapwater. They won't take that nicely for long.

I love flytraps! But I'm not interested in feeding them. When I had mine it was doing really well, got the distilled water and everything...but my family kept trying to feed them and they died because of it. They don't need to be fed if they're being well cared for, and if they are being fed, it's only very sparingly that you should.
@guydreamr
@guydreamr 2 года назад
There are two keys to feeding VFTs: 1) Never feed them meat meant for humans, eg hamburgers, etc. The traps aren't meant to digest that kind of meat, only feed them insects or rehydrated bloodworms. 2) 'The food should be no larger than 1/3 the size of the trap. If the amount of food is too large, it will rot and kill the trap. Otherwise, for adequate nutrition, at least one trap should be feeding at all times, except during dormancy.

While I find some stores do have better looking VFTs when they receive the shipment, I think they all have the potential to be good VFTs. I think it's like when Walmart's rotisserie chicken is smaller than Sam's rotisserie chicken. They just got them at different sizes but if all these stores were able to get the same VFTs at the same stages, it would all be OK. Now having said that, Lowe's sells them year-round, so obviously some will look sad and neglected on the shelves. The other stores, seem to sell them only during advertised or short periods of the year, so they go fast(er) and when the supply is done, it's done. So we don't have as much opportunity to see bad-looking VFTs (except for at Walmart). Places like Aldi's , Trader Joe's, Kroger , etc may also make other decisions about how and when to toss bad plants if they aren't selling, whereas Lowe's keeps them longer. When I first got into VFTs, I did buy the Lowe's kit with 2 bare-roots also (sometimes 3, with the extra being another VFT). However, for the average price of $10 for 2 bare-roots which may or may not grow (depending on their condition or duration on the shelf), I have since decided that I'd rather spend $5 each for 2 plants that I know are already growing. Sometimes Lowe's has Saracennia or Nepenthese pitcher plants for the same price point in the same small container that the smaller VFTs are being sold for. It's worth checking your Lowe's every now and then to see what they actually get.
