Luke needs to test V2 eight strand against J-braid eight strand(s) for abrasion, strength, knot strength as well as cost & availability. I know it wasn’t your intention, but this video came off like an infomercial for Daiwa.

After trying various lines over the years, I have always come back to the 4-strand power pro. 8-strand lines always started good but after a few trips, the strands would separate and swell the line than the 4-strand would so would cast shorter distance.

I use both and love both. Although I personally just use x8 regular j braid on my spinning and x4 power pro on my bait casting. Don’t know why…I feel like x4 wraps around baitcasters better. x8 a little too smooth of a line to dig inside the spool of my baitcasters. Both 20 lb test. I have used higher test. Both cast really far. Now the sound of the x4 going through the rod guides kind of annoy me. Some people like it but I don’t lmao! Feels like it’s scratching my rod guides.

Very interesting concerning the new Izanas braid used for the Jbraid Grand x8. I just checked the packaging (box) of the Sunline Siglon PEx8 #0.4 that I recently put on my Shimano Stradic CI4+ 1000 and was pleased to notice that it too is constructed using Izanas. I used to use PowerPro 4 strand but after a while the 'roundness' became flat like a ribbon and would catch the wind something terrible and the twisting was very noticable.

I have noticed the raspyness though the eyes of my rod. I casted out my GoPro using a 8lb diameter powerpro and while retrieving it. Another thing about the coarseness of PowerPro braid is that if you’re using it with a bait caster, it can very easily burn your thumb when trying to keep tension during a cast. Not sure if that is universally noticed, but with me and my group of friends it’s a very relevant issue.

Great comparison. I was wondering, have you ever tested knot strength difference in air versus submerged in water (or fresh versus salt)? I was just thinking about the difference in knot strength they showed with saliva vs no saliva when tightening and wondered if the water would act as a lubricant when it is being strained under water.

have you tested the j braid 8x grand against mono or fluoro for abrasion resistance?
@crude4u1948
@crude4u1948 Год назад
If the line diameter is the same (.15mm) then the strand used for a 4 strand is thicker than the strand used for the 8 strand. To me this means that the 8 strand is going to be more flexible and not as stiff as the courser strand used for the 4 strand. .15 divided by 4= .0375 diameter per strand whereas .15 divided by 8= .01875. So the fiber used for the 8 strand is much finer than that used for the 4 strand. Seems that the 8 strand would remain more flexible and would actually be stronger pound for pound than a 4 strand. IMO

@tinman6514 2 года назад
Crazy how picky folks get about braid… I’ve used just about every brand out there and I’ve never had an issue with any of them… worst complaint is most don’t hold their color… no big deal. Some may cast a little further, but not by much… The 4 strands make more noise but cut through vegetation better… 8 strand cast a little better and is a little quieter, but doesn’t cut through grass as well. I pitch/punch with chartreuse 50lb J- X8 as I feel I get more bites with quieter line… and I frog, swimjig, and swimbait, etc with Green 50lb J- X4 because it definitely cuts through vegetation better. Spinning reel is chartreuse 15 lb X4 because most of our northern Wisconsin lakes are full of grass, so jig worming, tossing finesse swimbaits, etc slice through better and land more fish. Casting distance is over rated when fishing grass… I’m not bombing casts… I’m making short to medium presentations to break it down efficiently and effectively to maximize my catch. One bite on a long cast can spook and ruin all the fish right in front you… On our rocky Smallie lakes, we use Green 30lb X8 to a fluoro or mono leader for casting, and chartreuse 15lb X8 to a fluoro leader on spinning applications. Slightly more casting distance and the promise that 8 strand is a little more abrasion resistant… that’s the deal. We catch thousands of fish every year and I can’t remember the last time I broke braid… braid to leader, or line to hook… other than the a big Muskie or Pike that decides to play. I’ve landed a 46 inch Muskie on 15lb X4 with no leader with a finesse swimbait on a deep milfoil line… so put on some braid that fits the majority of your fishing and forget about it ~ Use a green or black permanent marker to color a few feet of chartreuse braid if your running straight braid in clearer water.

"there is less material in a 4-strand"- wrong, diameters/breaking strength are the same, equals same amount of material; less material equals lower breaking strength. The reason why a 4-strand may break before an 8-strand, has to do with the number of strands. One stand of a 4-strand breaks, line loses 25% of strength. One strand of 8-stand breaks, line only loses 12.5% of strength. Having more, small diameter, strands makes 8-strand smoother and more supple/flexible. I use 4-strand Power Pro over 8-strand whatever, for on reason...cost; I can be a bit of a cheapskate. Never had any problems with it. Happy fishing...Whatever you choose to use!
@TheKajunkat
@TheKajunkat 2 года назад
There might be a little more volume taking up by 8 strands than 4 strands for the same outer diameter. less air space between the strands. It would be neat to weigh the same poundage and length of 4 and 8 braid to see if there is a difference in mass. I agree with you though, one strand breaking is much larger proportionally to the overall strength.
@Paulman50
@Paulman50 2 года назад
Saying 10lb 8 strand is stronger than 10lb 4 strand is like saying 10 lbs of bricks is heaver than 10lbs of feathers.
@buhda1974
@buhda1974 2 года назад
@@Paulman50 In undamaged line that is correct. My comment was addressing frayed/ damaged line. If one strand is cut/frayed, 4-strand is then only 8 lb, and 8 strand is 8.75 lb. Yes, that is a bit nit picky, but is simple math. What I was initially addressing was Justin saying 4-strand uses less material.That is an incorrect statement; 4-strand used fewer strands, but the same amount of material. Breaking strength is based on the breaking strength of a specific unit of the material, multiplied by the number of units (the amount of that material). Therefore, if 4-strand spectra/dyneema (10 lb) had less material than 8-strand spectra/dyneema (10lb), then 4-strand couldn't actually be a 10lb line.
@johnhall4427
@johnhall4427 Год назад
Welp....6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Too many variables involved to really know. I do tend to like the more stiffness of the 4 strand. Out on a jetty at night with winds i find the stiffer line easier to untangle if i get a knot or if it blows around rocks when im trying to do something like change lures. Nothing to do with breaking point. If both lines are rated at 20lbs then thats the breaking point of both whether 4 strands or 8. Test is test! But difference might be more involved in "cutability" as you said. Frayed line going around a rock. But i could also argue that each strand of the 4 strand line is equal to two strands of the 8 strand line. And since one strand of the 4 strands is equal to 25% of the line and thicker then that one strand may be harder to cut in half then the equal two seperate strands of the 8 braid. Bottom line! Nobody knows. But possibly the thinner easier to cut 8 strands will fray and fuzz up sooner going over a rock. Thought all these lines are gel spun and heated so the strands all bond/stick together. So none of this might be true. Same as you, i think price is more the factor in my choice. Just blathering here 🙃

From my understanding 4 carrier lines are STRONGER and more abrasion resistant the 8 carrier. This is easier to understand because the 4 carrier are more then double the diameter, then 8 carrier briards. Another benefit of the 4 carrier is its ultra- thin diamter per breaking strength.

Braid is made from ultra high molecular poly ethylene dissolved in a solvent normally mineral oil then heated and spun through a spinnerette after which the solvent is extracted using chlorinated solvents then dried and heated and stretched. Ultra high molecular polyethylene cannot be spun through a spinnerette because the viscosity is so high I.e. million of centipoise! I worked on equipment to make Spectra material. John T.

I recently purchased two spools of 10 lb Daiwa J Braid x4 from Wal-Mart. Absolutely the worst line I ever used. I literally could not cast a 1/4 ounce jig and plastic without the line snapping in two. I thought maybe I had a nick in my line guides, but nope. Same story on a different rod and reel. Hopefully, the 8 strand is better, but I wouldn't take the 4 strand if they were giving it away for free. Pre-pandemic I purchased Kast King Superbraid for $2.50 a spool. Didn't have good luck with the 8 lb line, but the 10 lb line was about as reliable as the Power Pro line I generally use. Landed a few bull redfish on the 10 lb line and 20 lb monofilament leader.

The main problems I have with braid are abrasion resistance (poor) and the tendency, after only a little use, to become water absorbent and basically act like a wet string: There goes decent casting. I tried Ardent Gliss, which may be better about resisting water, but I never found out because it "dug" so badly on the reel as to be hopeless. Maybe Suffix 832 is more waterproof without digging?

After watching this I have another suggestion. Take the same length rods with the same power ratings, but one with a light action coupled to braid and a heavy action rod coupled with mono. Then test the feel in some sort of way to determine the feedback of the weight. I'm sure it would be very similar. If it is then the only advantage braid has over mono is more line capacity on the spool but at 7.5 times the cost of mono line. Disclaimer. I'm a mediocre fisherman at best.

I know this is two years old and we have learnt a lot in that time about braid. More accurately about manufacturers claims about their braid. Braid diameter is the first casualty, NONE of them, that is not a single manufacturer of braid gives the correct line diameter. A number of line testing channels have sprung up and carefully measure braid roundness (some are quite square, some flat and some thick & thin), they also test knot strength and abrasion resistance but the one thing that’s consistent braids never live up to their claimed diameter, they are way thicker than stated on the label. This makes comparing them using their diameter as a variable is unreliable.

@Jritchey1211

That's strange, Joe. Haven't seen that before. Hands down a reel should hold more Braided Line than Monofilament Line of the same lb. test (10lb. Mono Vs. 10lb. Braid). The thickness of 4 strand Vs. 8 strand should be right around the same line diameter (one isn't thicker just because it uses more strands per weave).

My rod is a daiwa spitfire seabass mh 2.4m and reel is shimano nexave 4000hg I actually tried testing the line right out of the box and i was surprised that when I pulled for the first time it was strong but the second attempt it split into 8 strands and broke easily.

I think the manufacturers are testing the line underneath the water when pulling fish or something similar. That way the strength is accurate.

Less material but same diameter? I think the price difference is the manufacturing process not less material.

For big snook I’m talking 38 to 45 inches 40 pound power pro with 50 pound mono leader will do the trick. Jbraid for the price not worth the money.

4 strand braid is so rough, it can cut grooves in your rod tip and line guides. If you fish with Ugly Stiks, I would go with the 8 strand.

Math obviously isn't this mans forte. A four strand that is .15MM in diameter uses the same amount of material as an 8 strand that is .15 mm in diameter. The 8 strand fibers are simply half the diameter of the 4 strand fibers.

That is just false advertisiment. There's no way 0,15 power pro is only 10lb, in here it's breaking strength is labeled at 9kg.

dude, just make atest of 8 knot loop.. lol i can tear 8 knot loop with fingers on a 0.11mm braid... that is no good strenght... it says like 7kg holding, but you cant tear 0.13mm mono with bare fingers that says only 1.7kg lol

Does anyone else feel that the 8 strand lines starts out way smoother than the 4 strand but then the 8 strand actually becomes rougher than the 4 stand with extensive use?

Lots of claims here without any evidence and personal experience is not evidence. The noise of line going through the guides is a function of friction, 4 strand can’t be as good at casting for a given diameter if it is noisier than 8 strand, friction causes noise.

I come from a mountaineering background where we use slings etc. Dyneema is always white because it cannot be dyed but the slings are a lot thinner than normal PE webbing. If I look at all the different colored braided lines which contain dyneema I can assume there is very little dyneema incorporated into the product or it is just BS. Also Dyneema provides better tensile strength per square inch but not more abrasion resistence. This is where people get it wrong. I just don't get it. If there is really a lot of dyneema incorporated, then it should be a lot thinner per pound rating than normal PE braid. What gives?? Are they charging more because it is "dyneema"? I smell a big ass rat!!! This brings me to the 4 vs 8 braid. I think the 8 strand only provides less memory but that is about it. If the line is the same thickness overall the 4 strand should be stronger and even possibly more abrasion resistant.

I figure if you're fishing in open water, go for x4 since you're not going to be rubbing up on oyster bars/pilings/reef/etc. x8 for inshore all day though.

@@williamdougie6213 This is Luke... I absolutely love the 8J-Braid 8 Grand. What issue(s) did you experience with it what what size line were you using? I have been using their 10lb gray on my spinning tackle over the past year, and it has become my favorite for longevity and for pulling fish around structure without breaking. It also has won every knot contest I've done with it beating out my prior favorite (PowerPro).

@@Saltstrong I was using x8 10lb (green) last year it breaks down quickly and breaks, becomes weak, losing its castability. I tried the grandx8 10lb (green) this year and had two wind knots in two trips out. I managed to untangle the second knot then it just broke where the knot was. I switched back to powerpro and haven't had a problem since. Coincidence possibly but I doubt it. (Edit) running daiwa ballistic 4000 and tatula 4000 so it is not the reels line lay.
