I also think that rail match topic is really interesting. I was concearned about it too much buying my precision trucks. I feel like you could make a whole video about this, talking about railmatch of your trucks and your board vs your wheels and your board and how it effects your riding. Would really look forward for such a video also because there are no vodeos on this topic out there and I would have needed such a video as a beginner😁👍
I hate having my wheels hang out. It trips me up. I got a set of Don't Trip Slalocybins. They have three different settings and you also can turn some wheels around. Settings them up can take awhile, but I love the trucks.
I love some rail hang for my style of slower freeriding. (I keep my track width around 90% of the deck width) It gives me a lot of response. I also like to stand a bit ahead of my front truck (again, I like it for the extra response), so I really have a lot of trouble with pointy noses in getting enough toeside leverage (and also getting too much heelside leverage at the same time). I see you've made a torque block thing for your front toes; that would definitely solve the front toeside leverage issue I face with many decks. Also, in general, double kicks allow me to place my front toes down completely, so I kinda love them, especially because I can usually place my front foot ahead of the front truck and still get full leverage (still a bit more heelside leverage though because the toes are usually down in the pocket, while the heel is usually still on the concave). I used to ride a deck with a reversed taper (Landyachtz Peacemaker 36). And I had to use harder bushings in the rear to numbify the extra response/leverage I'm getting from the rear.
Nice vid! You say rails are just the edges of the board, but rails can be sharp or rounded, which is something to consider depending on rider preference. I can ride wider decks comfortably if they have sharp rails because I don't have to hang my feet off as much to feel balanced while sliding.
Thanks! I couldn’t help but notice that you provide thorough dimensions for your boards, and I commend you for that! Congrats on the new product drop, and it’s good to see new pro models on the market.
If you're new ALWAYS buy used. You are almost guaranteed to grow out of your first board once you figure out what suits you. Length doesn't matter. Wheelbase does, but as you've said it's 100% about preference. Rail-match matters, but the tolerance is bigger than you'd think and I usually prefer going a bit under (currently at 100mm hangers). Bushings. I can't stress this enough. Fuck around with those a lot, try going as soft as you can. They impact your setup the most. Use a footstop only when you figure out why you want to. Try weights. Try more weights. Drill your board. Chop it if you feel like it. Freeride race wheels. God is dead.
My opinion is buy new if you can afford it. We should be supporting the companies that support us. Buying used is definitely a great idea if you’re tight on dough
@@owencampbell777 I totally agree with the support part (trying to run a brand myself) I meant it for new people trying to get into the sport. Sooner or later everyone switches up their setup once they learn what they want
This is an awesome vid! I was wondering if you would ever make some sort of slide guides because I think you would be an absolutely sick teacher for stuff like that.
Great video overall! About the Rail matching topic, I am one of those who tries and make my not pop out the sides of the board, but my case is based from an accident I had back in 2016 where I was passing a guy at an event and when he went to pass me again our wheels' lips touched and I went flying off (I'm a light weight dude) and dislocated my shoulder...ever since then I've always kept my trucks somewhat narrow (134 katanas) and my boards just wide enough around the 9 inch mark I think it is. Also it just looks good for me seeing wheels right under the board :)
Ayye, really dig the in depth nature of your content man! Really wanna see you review the newly released cast Rogue 160mm trucks if you haven't already. Keep up the good work dude 🤘
Thank you!! I’ll see if I can get my hands on the cast Rogues, but I have a bunch of other reviews already planned. I think Downhill254 will be making a cast Rogue review
Width of the board doesn't matter is a bit exaggerated. I'm totally with you that it doesn't correlate with your height but a longer deck on the same wheelbase will still feel a tad more boaty. It's also swings a bit different during the slide. Concerning the rail match: I'm with you as long as you don't bring your wheels to far out or in. A board with a lot of rail hang just feels tippy. Rail match undeniably gives you the best weight distribution over your wheels while cornering.
Great points! There are a couple reasons why I decided to claim that length and rail match don’t matter. For one, my target audience with this video are on the beginner side. Adding complexity to my explanation wasn’t worth it. I also wanted to keep this video around 10 minutes, so limiting confounding variables and making strong claims helped to keep this video more palatable. Your point about longer boards feeling “boaty” could be expanded to explaining how the overall weight/inertia of your board affects your ride. That’s something I’d love to explore in a future video. Hopefully people see your comment and gain this extra insight - I can’t fit everything into these videos so I appreciate when the comment section can be another resource for people to learn.
@@owencampbell777 that's totally understandable! Shameless self plug at this point: Listen to the 10th episode of the Studio Longboard Podcast for a long and in depth tech talk! Btw I really appreciate the videos you are creating Owen! Great insights and a good Ressource to point beginners to!
💛 this topic. 🤙🏻you made concession for my (+ yours, it seems) & others ADHD , via the additional "Like" feature usage . I am 5'10" 140lb so...If I followed , I should probly try to get a longboard that matches my height & that looks good when I have on my favorite joggers , right? I think you mentioned certain griptape brands can setoff certain hair colors ; I am dirty strawberry blonde so was thinking Dark Matter might be the proper spec. 🤣
I made it by layering small pieces of duct tape. A little heat from a hair dryer or blowtorch allows plastic-backed griptape to conform to the curvature pretty easily. Lokton is an example of paper-backed griptape, and is less pliable and burns at a lower temperature. Cuei and Gangster Grip works really well with this technique
My current one (you can see it in my Instagram highlight titled “Gear”) is made with a Prototype Downhill large crescent implant. Those are made of polyurethane. They’re much easier to set up and can be cut with a razor blade, but that’s the only advantage over using duct tape
people may just buy blindly but for anyone that doesn't understand you got to think about height and length and pretty much every dimension of the board. I'm currently in the process of trying to find the best possible Zumiez board. I'm coming off of a 44 inch retrospec pintail. the wheelbase is 33.75 which is probably the biggest board ever and they don't make them anymore. my longboard broke after 7 years of riding and now I have a $150 budget on a Zumiez gift card so I have to really figure out the best dimensions with the budget I have. so far I've found one board with the best wheelbase and height but the length is 37 inch and I'm used to a 44 inch. I'm 6'6 tall so I need at least a 40-42 inch. I like sharp turning and stability cuz I live near a bunch of hills and idiot drivers so I got to have the stability and sharp turning. alright back to board hunting FML.
"I'm 6'6 tall so I need at least a 40-42 inch." is false. You adapt and what matters is wheel base try a shorter board but use the trucks and drill holes that max the wheel base.
@@insanogeddon also sounds like you googled false facts about this. the size of the board varies on the size of yourself. if i ride with a smaller board then i will have less stability on the giant ass hills near me. it gets windy where i live so 6'6 at 160 pounds going about 40-60 mph down a hill with idiot drivers everywhere can mean death even if im wrapped in bubble wrap. so that means do the math and dont respond to stuff like this and dont say its false cuz ive ridden a small board and almost lost my life last year. i hit the ground so hard cuz the stability was dog poop. i was in a coma for 8 months. it was my friends short board and he rode mine perfectly cuz its massive and the trucks were fine tuned. small isnt better for us bigger guys. dont respond if your gonna say something dumb.
I’m 6’7”. I ride a 31” board with a 20” wheelbase and regularly go 50mph on it. There’s lots more that go into a good setup than just numbers, and that is a major point I tried to make with this video. Try to broaden your horizons and try something outside your comfort zone!
Do you know anything about weights people put on the bottom of their decks? Up by the front truck. It seem to me, people that do a lot of stand up slide on wide softer wheels put a weight about 2.5 pounds right behind their front truck. Does it help with stand up slides?
The wheelbase measurement you gave is wrong. You measure from inner to outter. Inner to inner will give you the distance between the baseplates, inner to outter will give you the measurement from the middle to middle. Thats the standard for how wheelbase is measured.
I believe the reason for this is trucks have an old school and a new school bolt pattern. That changes where the outer holes are in relation to the inner holes, so the inner holes are always a constant reference point.
