The Tata Nexon EV, helped by its siblings, Tiago and Tiger, is very much the toast of the electric vehicle segment in India. Mahindra started out on electric vehicles first, but the Reva and E2O are long gone and Kartikeya Singhee says, the XUV400 feels more like a foot in the door than a grand entry into the arena. But does that mean it's game over? Or has it just begun?

One of major Reason for Nexon EV’s success is they launched facelifted version as EV version even before lifting ICE version in 2020. This really gave them the edge by showing their seriousness about EVs. XUV400 looks like an attempt to garner early owners feedback for future EVs and to meet C.A.F.E. Targets

Nicely done, Kartikeya! I love what you guys are doing with your videos - you're making experiences, not reviews. Although not in the market for an EV in this price range, this presentation enforces the sense to always maximize car/value calculation. Both cars almost equally safe so the next value proposition is the creature comfort, and that's where Tata excels here. Please bring out a Tiago EV experience video from your stables, too!

I came across this channel about a week ago through your shorts on the Thar RWD and I must say, it is the by far the most therapeutic I've ever felt watching a review. I wish you guys made a video like this for the comet ev and Tiago EV as well. Would love to hear what you guys have to say about these 2 cars. The price point as half the price of these cars and many of us are considering buying these small cars as a secondary car. Or at least just a video on the Tiago EV

Hey!you guys got good quality videos I have some suggestions 1.try to remove breaths from your audio(it can be done in post ) 2.your video's are very clean and I love them but something seems missing I exactly can't say what but once you get that thing you will blowout like crazy(PS you have top gear potential)

Excellent video. I love the quality of it. And nexon deserves the sales as Tata have gone out of their way to promote EVs despite having good ICE sales. However, the service of tata is painful to bear . I wish you guys as auto journalists would please talk about how much we have suffered as owners of tata vehicle's as well. Its not just about selling the car, the car shouldn't have issues to begin with, while the after sales service is terrible. My nexon EV has given me more problems over the years than any ICE car previously. Thankfully i do own a Innova to manage the lack of my city car (the quality of service in Toyota is next level) If we had more journalists highlighting the real issues of car ownership and not just the glitz and style of buying a car then maybe, just maybe tata would improve their after sales service

The XUV400 is a product that Mahindra needed to launch rather than wanted to launch. Using an old platform while not refreshing anything major highlights this. Mahindra has invested a lot on the BE range and the XUV400 looks more like a training exercise to build EV awareness among people while training their sales and service networks to handle an EV. The last thing Mahindra would want is to launch the XUV900 and face quality control issues at the dealership level. They know they have a quality product there. They are confident of the platform they've built. They have to make sure all the small details are ironed out by then.

This was indeed a good comparison. Mahindra has a very good chance of topping the segment with this car. But the car needs a lot of changes. The first for me will be the design of the interior and the front. They both look dated. I will also do away with the present driving modes and remove any adjustment to the feel of the steering. I would rather keep it simple by having a progressively weighing steering feel as the speed increases. As far as driving mode is concerned, eco and normal and temporary boost, where the boost mode works at a push of a button in both eco and normal mode, to help in overtaking. Would also like a paddle attached to the steering that would help in regulating the regen braking from no regen to stopping completely on regen. Battery chemistry doesn’t matter much as it’s possible to modify the NMC chemistry to work in our environment perfectly fine

One important question that pops up regarding buying an EV is about the Battery replacement that'll happen after about 6-7 years of hard usage... Its a Lithium-ion battery so it'll have to be replaced at about 45% of the original car's cost. (5 to 7 lakhs as stated by few dealerships). Is it worth to spend that much and will a person be able to save 5-7 lakhs worth of fuel and maintenance cost in 6-7 years? Not an EV hater... I just genuinely want to know.

Completely valid query TTP. The thing is a lot of this is estimates. There is a lot of uncertainty. The counter argument also is - the cost of the battery in 7 years would have shrunk dramatically. The worry will be what happens in an accident? Insurers have slowly warmed up to EVs. Also, that it will not age that fast anyway. These are estimates. What happens to depleted batteries is another thing altogether. So, EVs is a big gamble.

And these batteries have a life after which they will need replacement where the customer will have to bear the cost.. I'm talking about that aspect... Not the warranty replacement.

Honestly, how many buyers would keep the car till 8 years. Tell me that. Yes there should be upfront cost shared but price of a battery pack or cell in 8 years from now will be way too different then what it is right now. The only thing I suggest the EV buyers is enjoy your car more than worrying about all the other things which probably you might or might not even need to undergo.

@@alokdand1712 I'm someone who intends to keep a car for a long time (can't afford to switch cars every now and then)...and if I would want to buy a 5-6 year old used EV then this would be on my mind that there's a huge battery cost coming in a year or two... This would affect the resale value of these machines as well.

I havent driven the XUV4OO, but I did try the Nexon EV Max and I loved it. Tata had done some solid progress with Nexon since its launch and the numbers speak for themselves. The XUV on the other hand, I have never liked the design for some reason, after the launch of the 4OO, I have started appreciating the 3OO alot more. Though it looks like its butt's sliced off, the overall design is easier on the eyes. They have made a mess of the design with the 4OO's front and the color scheme makes its worse. Copper is not a bad color, neither is black and white combo with it. Cupra has made it work, cuz it complements the design, this one looks horrendous. That is one of the reason I never ever bothered to even test drive it. Mahindra never really had any EV tech, what they had in the Verito and E2O/Plus came from acquiring REVA. They just sat with all that knowledge meanwhile Tata did the ground work themselves (to my knowledge) and still delivered very good products. I just hope future products from both companies are even better, alot better in Mahindra's case.

We look at it simply - it’s got the same commitment from the manufacturer as the LFP. Also, it’s used by many other brands too. EQS too - which is also sold in India.

What we understand - no. Where it is exempt - it is for a few years, after which it will be applied. The vehicle itself is registered for 15 years.

I still have high hops for Mahindra. I see 50 to 60 e-verito at my office campus used as cabs for years now. I was so impressed with it that I never felt Mahendra is left behind. True they seems to lag behind now but with years of r&d (reva) real world experience they can be GO TO ev in coming years. Tata grabbed opportunity of not going electric with commercial first so that they make headlines and they are known for EV cars Indian infrastructure still has lot more years to develop for me to think of full EV, strong hybrid/ plug in hybrid can be easily trusted. Maruthi is a silent killer 😊 they have invested crores of rupees on battery r&d and manufacturing. When they come to EV market imagine they will have EV version of alto to invicto (technically, by default they can have IC, CNG, hybrid and EV of all their cars) they will come back to 50% market share…. It’s just matter of time

Hey Guys @MotorInc loved this episode and just wanted to ask you to make a dedicated video about the Water Wading Capacity of EV Cars/Bikes/Scooters ( EV Vehicles Of All Categories ). I mean, can we use EV Vehicles in water logged roads/areas? And if we do, will it damage any components?

Dont wade in ANY vehicle due to risk of rusting. IF and say IF, you must, EV is better off as the battery and motor are IP67 rated. Sail gently though, not like a jetski. Nexon is rated for 300mm wading

I have recently given my vehicle at Mahindra Service centre, there I saw one electric vehicle owner was turned down for his EV service quoting that they have stopped servicing EVs because of shortage of spare parts and skilled labour 😢 for last 1year he was getting from that same place but not anymore

The XUV400 feels old because the XUV300 felt old the day it was launched since the Ssangyong Tivoli was a 2015 car. The 400 is just a stopgap measure and it feels just that. Although in the process they have overdone the "electrification of design" to the extent of looking gawky. Where it scores strongly is in its strong basics which is carried over from the 300. I wish the 300 gets a "facelift" with 400 interiors. Not a fan of the red backlight with white interiors.

The Monster won't have good ride quality, it's a stiff motorcycle and you'll have to get used to it. Attention is guaranteed but he older Monsters do run a bit hot

In my opinion by 2030 most EV's are going get more efficient, powerful, enjoyable and most importantly reliable. There are so many underlying issues the current EV's have which are not known by everyone. If someone is buying a car from now to next 5-6 years pls, just go for diesels or strong hybrids.

How is this even a comparison? The nexon is so slow when it comes to fast charging. The mahindra atleast competes against better cars and saves you time when charging. And the same range for added boot space makes it a no brainer . Its not a fashion competition at this price point, its a matter of utility. Although i hate the implementation of regen controls via drive modes in the mahindra. The nexon isnt much better either, but still they make the controls more accessible. And let's be honest, neither of these meet the requirements of the avg ICE consumer. They needed to do more in terms of efficiency

Totally agree. The Nexon is a bit too slow when it comes to charging speed. And yes, sometimes when going to the airport, the bootspace is a constraint.

Depends what you would prefer, for me safety is important. XUV 400 got the space but misses most important features and major draw back battery. I still don't get why the hell they used NMC battery which has less life span and also not safe for Hot conditions. Nexon feel more future proof compared to 400

i beg to differ the xuv 400 has refreshed looks and is stunning like a volvo xc40recharge nexon looks ok but not better than the mg zsev ...ofcource looks are subjective but it is what it is......i would just go in for the looks and performance......cant believe the previous ice engine nexon looked kind of crap........

A secret that Mahindra showroom are doing is they are not promoting and taking booking of XUV . Reason is there are so much customer complains regarding range that Mahindra service guys has enough listening to them. XUV 400 has still lot of problems, one pays 20 Lacs and the car doesn't event goes 200 km range

Evs are boring in a good way. Good for city commutes or maybe short distances for now. Until a breakthrough in battery tech, EVs won't evolve. It is compelling that it cheaper to maintain and run but Evs need some time to mature.

The only gripe I have about the EVs is that they are not at all customisable!! For example you can not tune them, add aftermarket auxiliary lights, add bigger wheels or any other such stuff without seriously compromising its Range! And every petrolhead knows how important it is to add a few own touches to make the car feel unique and yours. I don't think EVs can have that same level of connection with its owner as of now...

Both cars are rubbish as "EVs" . No regen control paddles, very poor regen capacity, very little data presented to the user , software is poorly designed. Etc etc Although i do appreciate tata for atleast being serious about EVs unlike Mahindra. One serious advantage which you guys never mentioned about the xuv400 vs Nexon or kona EV is the charging curve, being "auto journalists" it's kinda disappointing that you failed to educate your viewers about how much difference in time the charging curve makes when sitting in a charging station. The XUV 400 is by far the fastest charging car at that price point, and easily saves you 20-30 mins of time while on the highway per stop. Certainly a far cry away from " similar charging times" . That's kinda poor journalism to not understand how much difference 30kw vs 50kw charging speed makes on a 600km journey

Your use case is very specific. Most users won’t use public charging network rarely. Especially on multi charge day journeys. Thanks for bringing the points up. @@motorinc a lot of users do end up using public charging regularly. Some of us have been driving EVs for a little over a decade now. Nothing rare or specific about being on the highway either. And while you may consider a comment "accusatory" , you could also feel free to engage in positive discussion by acknowledging your short comings. Especially such blatantly obvious short comings where the concept of discussing a vehicle boils down to whether its a fashion contest and has nothing to do with the actual EV tech that makes one ev better than another. Contribute to the discussion first yourself. Otherwise tell your viewers how you really feel

@@motorinc tigor ev is my office cab roughly 70% of them . I talk to various drivers thy say it all, not even single driver has good opinions on this car right from the headlights to the rear light issues, thy were happy with dzire diesel, and etios because they come to rescue when it breaks down ,

tigor EV for commercial is a different car altogether, the xpressT, which is a 72V architecture with Bharat001DC or GB/T unlike the nexon and tiago with 320V architecture and globally used CCS2 port. Its like comparing iphone to flip phone, thats how different the two EVs are.

@@motorinc i have contacted their showroom in Palace Road, Bangalore. Their executive used to call and fix appointment for Test Drive but they are not turning out. This week also they have taken Saturday or Sunday appointment but no use... Our house located 25km from Bangalore City that's may be their issue
