Damn, not gonna lie, watching those warbirds skim over the surface just makes you feel something...kortana's flying is something of beauty in that warbird Definitely need more warbird content
I suspect the Warbirds suffered less damage from bullets and air-burst shrapnel hits in the sim than what it would have suffered in a real-life battle.
This is actually something we have noticed on a few of these, but absent a way of getting access to the logs for the damage model, we really haven't come up with a consistently repeatable way of testing it. Subjectively, it definitely feels like there is a split between how damage is modeled on the warbirds and on the jets.
If you do some research you can find it was quite common for pre jet age aircraft to take a large amount of punishment. The pilot, fuel, and engine were the only real way to reliably take them down. It was taught in training movies.
@@paladamashkin8981 Particularly fabric and wood planes like Hurricane where rounds, shrapnel and flak would often pass harmlessly though them. Fuel lines, control cables would be checked and patches glued over the holes and the planes would be back in service in no time. Whereas the metal Spitfire would have huge exit holes and structural damage caused by similar contact. Still robust by modern standards but more vulnerable than traditional designs. "Fabric" planes like Hurricane and Mosquito were obviously very susceptible to fire though!
do you not have any type 42 destroyers modeled, we had enough of them back then and the seawolf 22's were also about and in commision, I dont think you would have faired quite as well against a 80's carrier group, I dont deny you would have beaten it, but just not as cheaply
HMS Andromeda was the only Exocet/Seawolf Leander in 1982 and she is often forgotten about but she was there in the Falklands protecting the Carriers when the HMS Broadsword and Brilliant had to go and help the struggling Type 42s with their Air Defence problems. HMS Penelope did have Seawolf too but was removed in the late 1970s after the trials were completed. Only Andromeda was in service ready for action by 1982 FYI :)
@Jyral Nadreth Yep! Sadly, we do have the HMS Andromeda, but she only has the single quadruple Seacat system. We'll have to revisit this one at some point if we get a better variety of assets.
Wish they had more Gen 1 Jets in DCS. It would be fun to see these senerios with the Me-262, Gloster Meteor, P-80, and P-84. As far as checking out Kortana's channel, I am already subscribed!!! 😄 various generation bombers through the ages, at some point, please?
Sea Dart was good in its day, but struggled with sea skimming missiles. It did shoot down a silkworm, but the silkworm has the RCS of a skyscraper. I talked to several Sea Cat techs in the 80, they all thought it was a real POS. SeaWolf replaced it and was extremely good, but limited range and only an 8 cell launcher. The 80s Royal Navy was pretty weak and whimpy. The RN has done a fabulous job of transforming that 80s fleet crap into a modern formidable fleet
I'd actually disagree - 12 T42s 3 Harrier Carriers T22s replacing the leadners the RN was very capable in the 1980s. Now there's only 6 Darings, the T23s are good designs but not all equiped with towed arrays. T26s aren't in service yet and will be good ships but there's only a handful of them being built. The Type 31 and 32 (which I think only exist because Boris messed up a speach) will frankly be embarrassing by modern standards.
Sea Wolf DIDN'T replace Sea Dart they were two different systems for different tasks, Sea Wolf was for point defence. Sea Dart was for area air defence, Mod 1 onwards Sea Dart was a formidable missile for its time. Unfortunately because of previous defence cuts the solid state upgrades to RADAR and Sea Dart hadn't happened by 1982 which cost us dearly. If Type 42 had 1022 RADAR and Mod 1 Sea Dart as it was supposed to have by 1982 - I doubt if the Argentinians would have got anywhere near us. We are making the same mistakes today with penny pinching on the Type 45s.
@@tomriley5790 can I interest you in 30 or so Littoral Combat Ships. UK can have them really cheap. If was up to me UK could just have them period. At least UK didn’t build and entire class of ships what couldn’t fight its ways out of a wet paper bag.
From 10:30 to the kamikaze hit was the best GR footage ever. If only the external view had continued to the hit into the ship, would have looked epic. lol, I paused it. YOU DID, AND IT WAS! Really nice.
Awesomely fun looking as always. I love how Cap calls every F-4 bomb run an 'Arclight'. Speaking of Operation Arclight, I believe B-52s are modelled in DCS, am I right? If so how about simulating some REAL Arclight-style runs in a mission? Imagine trying to bomb the Japanese Pearl Harbour fleet with an Arclight raid? I think that might be fun with the boys going up against the Zero-analogs while the AI BUFFS rain down hell. Alternately, I am certain someone has modelled the Yamato and Musashi by now. Arclight runs on the biggest battleships ever made? I know the tactic was futile in WW2, but the technology difference and bomb-load available to the far larger B-52s might make the difference. Would be interesting to see imo!
11:08 "Oh, sing with me, sing for the year Sing for the laughter, and sing for the tear Sing it with me, if it's just for today Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away"
Why no Sea Harrier fighters from the RN carrier? Also any Royal Navy 1980's Task Force would have had a couple of Type 42 destroyers with Seadart, etc, in addition to the frigates.
Loved the cockpit view from Cap in the F4, if it were any lower it'd need a bloody periscope! I love the gen 4 planes the most but my all time fave is never seen....the Panavia.
Leander was more akin to a general purpose frigate, I suspect they are not in game but Type22 frigates and Type 42 air defence destroyers would of been the better choice for air defence. That being said both sea dart and sea wolf were somewhat unreliable in their early days as was highlighted during the falklands conflict. Sandy Woodwards excellent book “one hundred days” gives a really good account of naval / air warfare of the period.
Fairy Swordfish? just one of many ww2 torpedo bombers. And "the de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito was capable of carrying torpedoes during World War II. It was used by the Royal Air Force and other allied forces in a variety of roles, including as a bomber, fighter-bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, and anti-shipping aircraft. In the anti-shipping role, the Mosquito was equipped with a 18 inch (450mm) or 22 inch (550mm) torpedo, which it could carry externally underneath the fuselage or wings. The Mosquito's high speed and maneuverability made it an effective platform for attacking enemy ships and submarines."
May I suggest uploading to rumble first if you want to direct traffic there? I received the youtube notification of this upload, but thought I'd try watching over there. It wasn't up yet.
From 2:30 Kortana mention the inability of the sea dart to fire at a low flying target reminds me of HMS Conventry, destroyed by an Argentine A4 with bombs at a low altitude
Takes me back to Mircosoft Combat Flight Sim and Warbirds. You would of all got fired from my Squadron because you cant take off! Good Vid I laughed alot it brought back a lot of good memories from the late 90's early 2000's.
These kinds of "what if" battles are some of my favorite GR videos they make. However, it just goes to show everyone the sheer weight of numbers regarding what the developers behind DCS have to contend with. Trying to realistically model almost a century of military hardware --- ground and naval as well as air --- is a fool's errand. And at what point is computer technology going to force DCS world to say, "Oh, look --- it's time for DCS 2!" and then start all over again. There are so many aircraft, so many ground units, so many ships, so many missiles of so many types and for so many mission parameters. So many ground units from main battle tanks to MANPADS to individual platoons of soldiers. So many ships with so many types of radars, so many types of guns, so many types of missiles, so many capabilities from heavily armed and armored WWII battleships to high-tech air defense ships to nuclear powered attack submarines. Are there any Allied WWII carriers? Or even Allied WWII carrier aircraft modeled? I've never seen anyone flying a Wildcat, Hellcat, a Corsair, an Avenger, a Dauntless, a Helldiver, etc. I wish there could be armies of programmers and modelers and military analysts whose full time job it is to make assets for DCS --- and more things for the Grim Reapers to play with. If only, huh? Maybe in the afterlife lol.
So I don't know if its in game, but a cool jet to add the 2nd/3rd Gen aircraft would be the A-6 Intruder. It served well into the 90s, because it was an extremely effective aircraft, but it was introduced during and flew in the Vietnam War. The dividing line between 3rd and 4th Gen seems to be Vietnam. 3rd Gen aircraft flew in Vietnam, 4th Gen were built using the lessons learned from Vietnam. Anyway, the A-6 is a much more capable attack aircraft than the A-4 Skyhawk. If it exists in game, it might provide a big boost to how successful the 2nd and 3rd Gen aircraft are. That group seems to pretty consistently do the worst.
Question is the skyraider not in dcs yet? I know they announced it was coming, I’m not seeing it added to these events which is literally what it was designed to do, it was Vietnam’s and koreas a10 essentially and arguable was more affective
On a side note, I believe some updates to the Meteor missile in game will be in the works. Greece just spilled the beans on its range and speed. 200km (124miles) range and M4+.
@@grimreapers Thanks!😁✌ Lol I've got a ton of ideas... One I'd really like to see is this-- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WJFP7xZdeXQ.html
It occurred to me that I have not seen you fly Tornado GR series jets in 80s or 90s sims such as this. Would love to see that. Are there Tornados modelled in DCS?
Does the game have the likes of Mosquito with Molins 57mm cannon?; Hs 129 B3 with 7.5cm cannon?; B-25 with 75mm howitzer?; Beaufighter with a 45cm/18-in torpedo?😮
video idea. argentina now wants to negotiate about the falkland island, could you do a video where argentina tries to take the island by force and the uk dont us diplomacy and makes a military respond.
They only have a4es💀 now. Those are barely fly able, let alone able to strike Falkland. Their navy is stuck in 1982 and have no future plans to upgrade.
@@wildfire160 Muhammad Awan. I look t up now and it would just be a exuction from the brittish side,i didt actully look up which aircraft and shipps they use like a a-4 and ia 63 vs f-35 it's a british win. and thier ships ar like muhammad awan said thier navy is stuck in the 80s thier newest ship is from 2004 so german shps from the 80s vs type 45 its just the same as in the air.
@@wildfire160 not really their fault, government is very corrupt and sanctions from U.K. make every western manufacturer stay away from argintina. China and Pakistan have offered Jeff as a fighter but again, the deal was is on hold because of the financial problems(government is withholding money)
With the Gen 4 its more the 'What Era of Weapon' rather than the era of aircraft. How about using unguided weapons for all three gens so its the delivery platform thats tested rather than the weapons themselves.
that wargame was played in the south athlantic by the Royal Navy and the Argentine Armed forces. The A4 skyhawk, Super etendard armed with the Exocet missile and the Mirage III and V are good enough. Ive heard,
One thing I bet is hard to decide is whether to drop or not because there was a couple people that went around when they could have dropped everything but did not quite like the spot and some got a chance to come around again and about half missed the opportunity by not dropping when they had a chance. I think flying to high destroyed everybody the most because people would pull up to turn around and get hit.
I think you'd be better off calculating the damage done divided by damage taken. This gets you: Warbirds: killed 9.67 times as much as they lost. Gen 2/3: killed 12.61 times as much as they lost. Gen 4: killed 3.94 times as much as they lost. Thus Gen 2/3 was the winner by a large margin.
An idea for a future video... sometimes you guys try other games... simulators... what about the DCS of NASA?? Reentry - An Orbital Simulator?? Just a thought
