Do a graduated build. From 40s cannons and AA guns, to S500 (or whatever). Be interesting to see a mix of tech as well. War birds bombing, with 5th Gen SEADing.
My only suggestion on effectiveness would be to coordinate the attack (aircraft, munitions, roles) more closely to optimize each attack. Look at third-gen for example, where you mention JDAMs are much cheaper and they appear to have been highly successful via lobbing them in, so theoretically it would have been zero losses with 100% mission success rate for 6-12 JDAMs. Also, yes, the newer tech is more complicated and allows for a a lot more mistakes, but I don't think that should be confused with real-world potential outcomes. I think it's safe to say modern NATO pilots have an extremely high standard of training all in order to limit user error and focus precisely on limiting mistakes during the most difficult and stressful tasks. DCS is extremely difficult to master, but for most everyone it is just a hobby, so I don't expect 99% of DCS pilots to fly as well as a modern US military pilot. Then you add the topic of flying ~5-30 different airframes in DCS and of course there will be mistakes. The closest GR videos have to the skill level of a modern military pilot (in my opinion of course) is Kortana, who could surely succeed at that role given entering that pipeline. So, who was the most successful pilot in each scenario - Kortana. Round 3 isn't her fault, as she flew in harms way 300% more than any other pilot that mission just to help wild weasel. Well, picture how well that third-gen attack would have gone with 8x Kortana robots? Just count the munitions costs and call it a win. I'm not suggesting eliminate others from participating, of course not, but it doesn't hurt to look at the results of the mission and add some inference on how you believe it would have gone if DCS-level piloting was replaced with professional full-time military piloting, versus taking the acrual results and potential silly mistakes and concluding that is how it would simply be. That gives me a new idea. Kortana, how do you feel about a new series, Kortana vs. the world? It would be a huge editing project by you and Cap, where you setup a mission requiring 2 to x number of combat roles, and then you simulate flying each role filmed seperately and combine them into one video of an attack run with many Kortanas. For this mission, it would likely be 2x F-16 SEAD/DEAD/wild weasel and 1x strike to put 6x JDAMs on the runway, all flown by...Kortana. That would be amazing and hilarious. It's much more complicated than that, especially seeing as how you'd have to predict the outcomes of certain scenarios due to differences of flying a seperate role in seperate runs versus the outcome of one run and three pilots (for example, one SAM versus one pilot three times or one SAM versus three pilots one time). Just a fun thought. Thank you all for the content, time it took to setup a complex and what I assume to be a realistic scenario, and all of the wonderful flying. \o/ PS: I get the sense that Kortana is compensated by "someone" for this level of military knowledge. Or, just a truly enthusiastic person who knows what they love.
I enjoyed that, it reminded me of your (Kortanas) Air Defense Island. I say run the same thing again, but plan better. (I appreciate this takes time and we all know what that means in GR) The Gen 4 was a surprise and as pointed out, could have been completed for less cost.
Violet is awesome. As a noob, and still am, I caught her on the practice server ans she she took over an hour to try and talk me through carrier landings. Most patient person Ive found in the game to date.
I like these type of missions where we are trying to figure out what works and don't work, this was fun. Sucks i had somebody show up to the house at the beginning on the gen 2/3 mission and didn't get a chance to fly the mission. RB
If I could I would use a swarm of cheap drones to saturate the defense network. Obsolete missiles, war museum relics, gliders, even blimps would work in a pinch.
The coalition used decoy munitions during Desert storm for SEAD to great effect. Planes launched decoys which made it easier for the weasels to get their HARMs on the Iraqi radars
I could watch this sort of thing all day long. The cost analysis of weapons and platforms expended is fascinating to me, and a really good example of inflation over the last 80-100 years as well. Would LOVE to see more of Kortana's crew and the GRs running these!
Like what was already said, I think it’d be great to see Viggens go at it, as well as using decoys from F14s/F18s. When they come out, it’d be interesting to see the F-15E and F-4E employed. I think it might also be interesting to use some less expensive aircraft in the mix (such as the MB-339, OV-10, A-29, SK-60, JF-17, etc) or throw some helicopters in.
Excellent flying by the ladies. And would I be out of place saying that Kortana has a pretty voice? Well I don't care, she does! Well done ladies and gents. Let's make this a thing.
Getting hooked on Grim Reapers' videos ....... though this is bit like setting mountaineering records. 1st to get to the top. 1st to get to the top alone. 1st to get to the top alone in winter. 1st to get to the top, at winter, blindfolded and only wearing boxershorts. 😀
Just as an aside GR members and followers, Ward Carol is a retired F-14 pilot who has a RU-vid channel has recommended as the best Aircraft Carrier movie of all time as being The Fighting Lady which is available on RU-vid. I'd post a link but not sure it's permissible. Probably worth a look.
Fascinating analysis. Lots of fun to watch, as always! Perhaps for Gen 4 aircraft the pilot's mantra could be transformed from "aviate, navigate, communicate" to "aviate, navigate, devastate" ... because *aviate* remains top of the list.
If Kortana isn't careful ... somebody in the DOD is going to special draft her and throw her into the Air Force. And everyone will live happily ever after if she ends up a weapons instructor at Nellis AFB.
Lol, if the Air Force wants to give me a jet to fly I wouldn't turn them down. That said, I wouldn't exactly put having ~4000 hours in DCS on my resume 😅.
In the scoreboard you should probably consider the pilot’s value as well. Maybe integrate it with a survivability score (I.e if you shoot an a-10 down the pilot is more likely to survive than in a zero).
i used to live in virginia near the NAS Oceana navy base and i would love to see some type of war games involving that base. By looking online there seems so be about 250 F/A-18 super hornets and i was lucky enough to get a tour of the base and hangers from my friend an F-18 pilot. Also with the navy ships stationed in that area and the Langley air force have with 5th gen, it would be cool to see THE BLOB of F/A-18s all scrambled.
Great one ladies & gents. Always love a Kortana IADS! Cap, your videography skills have gotten lots better. Really enjoying the new scenarios & War Games
I would honestly like to see Viggens going in at high speed and outrunning SAMs and stuff. Second idea is using twin-seaters like the F-14 and F-15E (once it's out) to see if splitting the workload helps with survivability.
The reality behind these defensive systems is they are spread thinly because you never have enough of them or enough of a variety to cope with all vectors of attack - factor in breakdowns and lack of spare parts which are NEVER factored in DCS - means that they are no where nearly as effective as they are on paper. Something like a Tigermoth would get through most modern defences as it can fly under the cover of most modern air defence systems. Gepards would be more use than most of these systems as they are capable against close-in low and slow threats.
I would love to see some cost effective modern weapons & necessary weapons systems adapted to the warbirds. It seems like a cost effective option to me & this platform seems to be a good test platform. Thanks as always.
Can the counter be programmed to include human cost? I know you guys know it, but some of these GR missions seem to just throw human lives at stuff when it wouldn’t have happened if it was in real life. If so, can it be programmed to distinguish between people who survive (eject/ditch successfully) vs die vs are captured (not sure how you’d determine this).
The cost of training a pilot scaled up with time, because the flight costs did too so arguably you could just figure in another 5-10% for pilots.... or figure it's included in the price.
Entertaining, but…everyone’s a critic, so here goes: Warbirds - my inner-CFI kept screaming CENTERLINE, CENTERLINE when I saw the Spitfire (and virtually every other plane) careening left on take-off. Please review torque, p-factor, turning tendencies and gyroscopic effects for propeller-driven aircraft in the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge.
a4's and mirage are super sexy... i am clearly showing my age. Kortana always impresses me, design and flight. She is my peoples champ! Sorry Simba. 27:50 Matrix: "Who designed this mission?" :-)
McQuire : "There's a great future in drones. Think about it. Will you think about it? " Drones carrying drones which broadcast fake swarms of drones. Drones It'd be interesting to see a costed-out drone attack... maybe 3 drones targeting each section plus all the decoys and SEAD drones. ... plus, the cost of joysticks being slammed to the ground when a drone is shot up.
Kortana kind of seems to me like that primary school teacher who all the kids love...... but they know if they piss her off they'll be collecting their pension before their detention ends
2 opposing teams. Limited budget. Do you spend on expensive modern gear or cheaper warbirds? How much do you spend on AAA? Have you picked expensive anti-radiation missiles but the other team's gone with visual WW2 flak cannon?
Bombing runways is very 1940s thinking. With the amount of maintenance and the facilities required, hangars and maintenance facilities and equipment is a much better tactical target.
That was loads of fun to watch, Cap. Thank you for the video. :) Question: How would a flight of Super Tucanos fare in the same scenario? Slow speed like the legacy birds, but a significant upgrade in terms of avionics and armament. Reckon they'd do the job, or toast?
@@louisbabycos106 But wouldn't their more advanced electronics and countermeasures, together with their ability to deliver smart munitions make up for the lack of speed? Yes, slower than the warbirds, but in some ways more capable?
Modern air defence systems are designed to counteract threats flying high and fast. Saudi Arabia has the largest and most complex US Patriot installation in the world. Many clusters of systems all over the place - billions and billions of dollars worth. $3000 commercial drones carrying grenades and shaped charges flew under their cover and blew up half the Saudi oil refining infrastructure. These sophisticated SAM sites with million dollar plus missiles are last decade solutions to last decade problems.
Surprised no one using a EF-111 raven or a F4 wild weasel dedicated SEED aircraft. Was it cost or some other considerations for it? Really surprised no Phantoms,Jaguars, tornados, or aardvarks.
