Which Ferry Should You Take to Put-In-Bay?
There are two ferries to Put-In-Bay, which is on South Bass Island in Lake Erie.
The Miller Ferry is the only ferry that takes vehicles to the island.
The Jet Express is passenger only, no vehicles.
Honestly, the Jet Express is more comfortable to ride as a walk on passenger but it is a lot more expensive.
Dogs ride free on both ferries!
Just be careful, watch their Facebook page/news for wind updates on Lake Erie. There are times that the ferry service cannot run, as the lake gets too choppy in high winds or storms. Lake Erie is greatly affected by weather.
The Miller Ferry says $8/person but that's exceptionally misleading as that's only one way. So unless you plan on taking the ferry to the island and never leaving, the round trip price is $16.
The Jet Express is $36.50. That being said, it's still the ferry I would take if I didn't have a vehicle to bring over. There are actual seats. And even an indoor seating, and bathrooms. In order to sit down on the Miller you have to walk up a bunch of steep stairs to the top deck.
Either way, the islands of Lake Erie are great and definitely worth a visit!
The Miller Ferry leaves from Catawba Island (which is connected to the mainland by roads/bridges) and goes to 2 islands:
South Bass Island/Put-In-Bay (20 mins)
Middle Bass Island (40 mins)
Ticket prices for Middle Bass are slightly higher.
Reservations must be made in advance for vehicles going to Middle Bass Island, but for South Bass Island it's first come first served.
From the Miller Ferry FAQ:
Are dogs allowed aboard Miller Ferry?
Yes. Pets are welcome aboard the Miller Ferry and travel for free. They must be kept on a leash or cage and stay on the lower deck. Several outdoor sites and restaurant patios on Put-in-Bay are pet friendly.
The Jet Express leaves from Port Clinton (PIB) or Sandusky (CP/KI) and goes to 3 places:
South Bass Island/Put-In-Bay (25 mins)
Kelleys Island (20 mins)
Direct to Cedar Point as well (under 10 mins)
From the Jet Express FAQ:
Can pets ride on the Jet Express?
Yes, the Jet Express is pet-friendly. Pets ride free as long they are in a cage or on a leash.
The trip on the Jet Express takes approximately 25 minutes from Port Clinton to downtown Put-In-Bay and 45 minutes from downtown Sandusky. We drop you off in the heart of all the action!
The Jet Express also will take you between Kelleys and PIB, with select Cedar Point dates. Really make sure to pay attention to time, as these options only run every 90 mins or so. Depart Sandusky to Cedar Point, to Kelleys, to PIB, to Kelleys, to CP and that takes a while.
The Kelleys Island Ferry
There is another ferry, the Kelleys Island Ferry that leaves from Marblehead for Kelleys Island. It's the only vehicle ferry to Kelleys Island. The rates are similar to the Miller Ferry and it runs every half hour during peak season as well.
I couldn't find any official information, but last year this ferry did not charge us for the dogs in our vehicle. If you're planning on walking on to the ferry with a dog, I would give the ferry line a call first to make sure that's ok.
If anyone ever has any questions on these ferries, feel free to drop a comment but I highly recommend calling the ferry line. They usually pick up right away.
