X-Trans which? X-trans II? X-Trans III? IV? Should you buy a new Fujifilm camera or a used camera with an older trans sensor? Which Fujifilm sensor is the BEST?

I am a concert photographer and when I moved to the X-T2 from the X-T1 I eventually had to go back because of the noise characteristics into RGB stagelights. The only camera I've bought since then is another X-T1 for backup... The front desk and editor both commented I had been going a little bit crazy with the ISO lately, I had to explain that it's the same ISO but a newer camera... There's not even any more noise in the X-T2's output, it's just more intrusive for some reason Edit: It was X-T3, I skipped the X-T2
@Paul_Rohde
@Paul_Rohde 3 года назад
Your response intrigued me, so I did a teeny bit of reading. Whether this is relevant or not I don't know. Apparently the X-T1 at ISOs higher than 1600 doesnt add any sensor analogue gain, but merely uses image processing, unlike the X-T3. Maybe if you shot in RAW on the X-T3 and kept the iso at 1600 (or at it's 2nd base ISO 800) and did post processing for well exposed JPGs, the results could have been similar. I don't know, your experience is interesting. I wonder if downsampling/similar res settings could play a part too.
@Vinterloft
@Vinterloft 3 года назад
@@Paul_Rohde Yes, but it's not simply a matter of "more" or "less" noise, it's about what it looks like in a small newspaper photo. If you print it at 100% size you may not notice, or even 16MP X-T1 vs. 16MP crop of the X-T3. But when you zoom out you notice that the noise *spread* of the X-T1 is even across the frame, while the X-T3 has these clusters in certain places where it's more or less and when you view it from afar it can be mistaken for compression artifacts basically.
@Paul_Rohde
@Paul_Rohde 3 года назад
@@Vinterloft Well your response hasn't reduced being perplexed. It would make an interesting short story online or on RU-vid just to display what the difference is. Not knowing the full workflow in detail, it's hard to say, but the fact you can't notice it in a straight 100% crop infers the X-T3 is Ok, and that something else is going on? Maybe the processed bit depth between the two, or the file being used is different that's not working out well with the current way processing is undertaken for the printing workflow. This &/or could be something akin to Moire interference? Seeing what is actually happening could be illuminated by somebody in the know.
@Vinterloft
@Vinterloft 3 года назад
@@Paul_Rohde Hmm moiré would be more of a problem for the X-T1 since it doesn't have an AA filter but the X-T3 does, though. I might get another X-T3 some day and test them more thoroughly next to eachother

Several years ago, I owned the X-T1, and while I absolutely detested the autofocus capabilities, I cannot deny the fact that I enjoy the photos I created with it. Not only were the images SOOC pleasing, but the 16MP resolution felt a lot more detailed than one might expect. I have bird photos made with the X-T1 and the 90mm f/2 (and yes, I agree, nothing about that combo says “good for bird photography”) where I cropped the living snot out of the files, and still you can see the details of individual feathers when zoomed in 1:1. Unless the plan is to make huge prints, very few people really need the extra resolution of modern cameras.
@matthieuzglurg6015
@matthieuzglurg6015 2 года назад
the reason teh X-T1 felt so detailed for a 16MP sensor is because it does not have an antialiasing filter. On bayer sensors, it can cause moiré patterns on stuff like fabric etc, but X-Trans sensors greatly reduce that and don't need one

Do you know why they started using AA filters in later models? Fuji’s own marketing team bigged up the lack of need for an AA filter that the X trans allowed so it’s strange they started using them again.

I experienced the same with old Olympus cameras. The 12MB sensors have a more punchy color rendering that the more modern, higher resolution sensors. Since I am rarely shooting raw I clearly prefer the old sensors so long a higher resolution isn't really mandatory. Apart from color rendering and ISO performance differences all other "advantages" of older sensors (more contrast, more punch) are easily explained by wider DR of the newer ones which makes those advantages technically disadvantages). Which is why Omar ended up giving advices how to make your newer camera behave like the older one and not the opposite)

On a technical level, yes, the newer X-Trans sensors are supperior, but it hardly matters when looking at the images out of the camera. The X-Trans II out of camera JPEGs look have the most pleasing colors and it really does affect how enjoyable a camera is to a user when the photos look good without the need for postprocessing every single one. The tech matters less than the look and feel of photos that it produces. And in this regard X-Trans II is still the king of them all.

Not exactly right into this term. 1st things first, the original X-Trans I Sensor is into the X-Pro1, X-E1 & X-M1. Then the X-M1 is a special case, because it does feature the EXR II Processor - whileas both the Fujifilm X-Pro1 & X-E1 feature the original EXR Pro Processor, all right? :) The X-M1 is missing some of the customization features, for instance, you can't add a (digtal) red, green, blue, yellow or -orange filter via menu. My Fuji's are the X-E1, E2, M1 & T1, and the X100 L.E.

I had to get rid of an X-T3 because it was awful at ISO 1600-3200 under those circumstances. The noise is too intrusive for even newspaper print. Even if they have mostly similar noise levels, the X-T1 spreads it evenly and organically across the frame whereas the X-T3 had what I describe as clustered 'blotches' which very faintly look like compression artifacts, but it's enough to make even the average Joe notice.

Since I have got my x-e3, I always like to fiddle around with the film simulation but I mainly use Classic Chrome, colour +1 or Astia also colour +1 and Acros. I actually do sharpen up the jpg +1, but do jpg & raw. I am still on noise reduction preset 0, why should I since I have got the raws? Xtrans III 24 megapixel helps once you got to crop, Xtrans II files are half the size and I see no difference at 100% on my 4K monitor. The only reason I see to move on to the current Fujifilm line-up is improved autofocus and IBIS, only in order to better use old analog full frame lenses, but not the Xtrans IV sensor for image quality.

Great work Omar, I'm number 336 in the comments ( I read everyone of them ) I found this vid very interesting indeed, thank you so much for the effort you put into this and all your vids which so many of us really enjoy. I've come away with the fact that Fuji have done a great job with all their sensors/processors and they make cameras for a variety of uses and budgets but still keep the Fuji flavour with them all. Cheers Bud

The great thing about Fujifilm is that in any particular generation of X-Trans you pick the body you like as internally they are very much the same. I have the X-E4 and in terms of sensor, processor, AF, firmware etc., it is the same as their top X-Trans IV body.

Thank you, Omar! You did the hard work to prove what we all suspected. Fujifilm have such a huge challenge now to create an X-T5 that will be exciting enough to upgrade from my X-T1 and X-T2.

This was a great video! A lot of talking about things and doing the comparison process, but it kept me entertained! Nice to see this topic discussed a bit more. I was always wondering about the sensor vs processor. What truely is making the difference.. there are trans II sensors with different processors out there, might be worth a comparison too!

Thank you for this thorough video! It seems the senor got better with each generation, the picture output looks better with the old ones though. The best looking sensor is of course the original X-Trans! 😏 You can get X-E1 for under 100, X-M1 for even less, you should give it a try...

I remember checking out my X-T10 and my X-T3 at the same time and wondering why the screen looked so much warmer on my X-T10. I thought it was just the screen getting the colors wrong but never actually thought it was how that camera rendered colors! Great video Omar!

Thank you for this nice video and great comparison! I have had the X-T1, X-T20, and X-T3, and fully agree that the differences among those were quite small. Maybe the largest ones were in the dynamic range, but that’s just my impression, I have never done such a clinical test as you did. Thanks again, super interesting, as always!

Love your analysis. After recently dropping my XT2 on concrete ,no damage. I decided to get a backup or upgrade . After all considerations including the XT 4, I purchased another XT2. I seriously considered the XT3 but the images at 6400 really looked better (to me) on the XT2.

Thanks for the time you put into this video. Very interesting results. I think most people will be drawn to the older punchier warmer images, I know I am. This is another reason I am hesitant to get the newest cameras. One think I don’t like hearing rumors about is that Fuji is going to use a 40 plus megapixel sensor in the xh2 and probably the new cameras that follow. I don’t want or need the extra megapixels and I feel most of us don’t either. We would be much better off with a camera that performs better at higher iso and has more dynamic range. Kind of frustrating that this is the way the market is pushing.
@fredbloggs545
@fredbloggs545 3 года назад
You can make the camera output whatever white balance you like. Want it warmer, make it warmer. The 16mpix sensors are not better at high ISO, down-sample a 26mpix image to 16mpix to get a true comparison of ISO. What you will find is that the true 16mpix image loses detail and smears due to the old processor whereas the down-sample retains detail with less noise. Then try up-sampling a 16mpix image to 26mpix. You'll see plenty of noise and loss of detail!

Wow ! What a fantastic comparison test. Truly , 16 mp is just fine for most things . That said, I was torn between the xt20 and x70 as to which I liked best; taking onboard that the newer cameras can be adaptable to the earlier models as you demonstrated . You cannot go wrong with any of these cameras . We can be tricked in to thinking we need the latest what ever that comes along and in the greater scheme of things it sells cameras , which is great isn’t it? What this confirms is that we all have great cameras and understanding what the camera can produce or put another way, utilising and over coming of a known weakness , we get great photos . If you want pro standard every time then you use the tools that will enable you to do that. That said, any camera within the last five years will produce fantastic images of you use the camera correctly , and use raw to tweak the final result . For personal use and recording personal adventures any of the Fuji cameras can deliver great images . The viewer of your images will not care what camera or lens was used. It is the ability of the image to tell a story that matters . Of course, we all like a little edge on producing our work and you will not go wrong with any of these fantastic cameras . I use an old en10 ii for walk about after I lost my Fuji and I am trilled with what I can achieve from 16 mp image files . Just like the x70, you cannot go wrong with that camera. But given the choice - and this is a little tongue in cheek when I say this, I prefer the xt20 . However, that does not distract from the other Fuji cameras one bit. You see, we all go for the camera we know best and find easiest to use - correction, understand and know best. As you demonstrated Omar, you can achieve identical images of the older style of cameras if you wish to have that look; just know your camera and adapt it to your personal taste. Omar, this was one of the most rewarding videos you have put out there and it reflects the time and effort you spent on preparing it. Do not critique your efforts , as you have done a sterling job and nobody else to my knowledge has come anywhere close to such a comparison . Well done !

I have the original x100 then x-t20 and now x-t3. I love the organic black and white coming from the original x100. However there's something about the x-t20 sensor that i really like. The colors are warm and great for my pets and kids which on both subjects are great for if the sensor can capture high details which the original x100 is not good at albeit the lens on that one is just not very sharp by today's "standard".

X-Pro1, X-E1 and X-M1 have the first generation X-Trans sensor. X-Pro1 and X-E1 have the same image processor EXR Pro but X-M1 has the EXR Processor II; as a result, X-M1 may have slightly different colors from X-Pro1/E1.
@fredbloggs545
@fredbloggs545 3 года назад
It is better to start with the X-Trans IV with colour accuracy and sharpness then tone it down as required. There are a lot of image settings in Fujifilm cameras that most people leave as default. Want it warmer, make the white balance warmer. Want it saturated, increase colour. The settings are literally in the camera at your fingertips. For a valid comparison of ISO noise you should resample the higher 26/24 mpix images down to 16mpix. Put it another way, take the X-Trans II 16mpix high ISO image and increase it to the dimensions of the 26mpix image. You'll see exactly how much noise there is in the X-Trans II and it will be laughably bad. I keep saying this under videos of people claiming that older sensors are more film-like. It is about the settings, not the sensor! Oh and mpix does matter when you crop, it's the very reason I swapped from X-Trans II to III.

This is so timely for me! I just searched on RU-vid for this type of comparison last week! Personally, I’m a hobbyist photographer and I prefer the X70 in each of the comparisons. It’s just more fun and I love Fuji because my straight out of camera shots are usually pretty great. I only own a XM-1 with the X-Trans I sensor so this comparison is missing that for me but I totally get it. Every time I think about “upgrading” I remember the photos I have taken with my little lightweight camera that takes multiple lenses and I stop myself. However, I really do love those images from the X70!

I spent more time than I’ll admit testing the X100F vs X100T. IMO the pre-V 23mm f2 lens peaked at 16MP. Greens and reds from X100T I liked much more.. weirdly.. greens and reds from X100V seem similar to those of X100T. May be why I love the X100V. I’m a huge X-Trans II fan. Pastels from II are 😍.. baby blue, pink, soft colors. I never jive’d with the III & I’ve tried many bodies with it.

Thank you Omar, that was a great deal of work you did on our behalf - Thank you. Personally I have an X100S (x-trans II), which I use as my grab-and-go camera for family snaps and usually I use the JPEG output, whereas I have a couple of X-Pro 2 (X-tans III) that I shoot almost exclusively in RAW for more serious work. Also I have an X-Pro 1 (the original x-Trans 1) which I am happy to share with you if you visit London, England. It is a magical camera, slow and frustrating in many ways, but I couldn't part with it as some of the images it produces are magical. This is my new X-Pro Noir camera with a 27mm f2.8 and BW +Y - homage to my old Leica CL.

@@fredbloggs545 quite possibly! But I meant no disrespect to those kinds of views. I think it was more that Omar took the time to show it was possible to emulate those qualities and being “better” is subjective depending on whether you prefer pure colour accuracy/sharpness versus a stylistic quality. I’m curious about the idea that with modern higher resolution cameras and sensors that are shared amongst manufacturers, there is something to be praised about older more unique sensors that have some character about them.
