Which glass paint should I use?

In this video we try and answer the question, which glass paint should I use. There is no simple answer to this as different glass paints are better at doing different things.
Glass Paints can be split into the flowing ones and the thick peelable water based ones. The flowing ones are available in both waterbased and solvent based formats.
In addition to this there are special paints like the oven bake ones which are dishwasher proof once cured.

I used oil paint on a window when I was in art school. It looked like stained glass, allowing light to pass through.

Pebeo Virea rocks! I used it on some glass adornments for outside statues. Once baked they don't fade and a lot of rain and cold hasn't seemed to effect them either. Michael's often has 50 and 60% coupons so it softens the high price.

My first glass painting was 3’x3’ 1/4”thick glass. The design was so large, I had to work very quickly. I used Pebeo Vitrail Opal. I didn’t want it transparent. I noticed that dust collected on it, as each section took days to dry. Also, the relief outline lines were so long, they ended up being somewhat shaky. Does anyone do large glass paintings? I would like to pick up some tips, so I can improve. I conpleted my art piece last week and plan on selling it. Is there a market for large pieces or a place where glass painters can sell there art? Thank you. Your video was informative and I plan on seeing what other videos you have.

Very helpful! Is there a best-method to achieve a uniform gradient from one color to another within the same space? Say in a 10" x 10" square where you want it to go from a dark shade of red to a light shade of red evenly from one end to the other. I'm picturing this with the Pebeo Vitrail solvent based paints.

Hello from Joe in Indiana USA. Thank you for this and all your other awesome videos. I've watched many of them recently and I've learned so much from them with your instruction. I've also managed to purchase some of the recommended products. I do have a question I am hoping you could field. I am interested in glass painting candle jars holding soy wax candles. I am currently working with Pebeo Vitrea 160 using the bake technique. Do you think a painting on the side of a candle jar would hold up throughout the candle burn cycle? I noticed you had a peal and stick painting on a Christmas candle in this video so evidently that held up pretty well. Anyway, just curious your thoughts on Vitrea 160 in candle jars as well as any other recommendations you may have with this scenario. Thank you once again. It's been a pleasure learning from you.
@GlassPainting
@GlassPainting 4 года назад
I'm 99% sure that you will have no issues with the Pebep 160 paint. It has been designed so it can be baked in the oven so the temperatures produced by a candle shouldn't cause an issue. I have decorated candle holders with it without having any problems.

Hi, thanks for this information. I have a Tiffany style glass lamp shade (not vintage) that I would like to alter somewhat in the coloring. Is it possible to paint over another color? I was thinking of using opal type finish with colors like soft gold, bronze, etc. Have you ever tried anything like this?

Thank you for your presentation. I have used the transparant orange Pebeo Vitrea 160 on glass that is in my shower wall. I wasn't able to put it in the oven of course as I painted the glass which was already in the shower. What would you suggest I use to paint over my painted glass now to protect it? As it's in a shower it will frequently get wet and also will need cleaning to remove soapy water.

What do you recommend for the best durability in non-food use items which will be handled often? Specifically, I'm looking to make a large number of "coins" out of fully etched glass "flat marbles" (like would be used in a vase or fish bowl). I'm leaning toward enamel spray paint with a primer for the ease of application and what I assume to be better durability. I'm not sure whether baking is advised with enamel spray paints, but I intend to try it. As I said they would be handled regularly and they'd be stored together in large pouches, so lots of clacking against one another. Does this seem to be a suitable solution, do you have any recommended improvements to the process, and/or do you recommend an altogether different approach for this application? Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the information. I hope you will be able to answer my question. I am planing to paint the countertop backwall of my wet bar (which will be glass). I am planning an abstract design and the surface that I paint will be stick to the wall. I am not sure if the silicon (which they use to stick glass to the wall )will be visible or not? Can I play with the paint on glass like on canvas? Kind regards

Many thanks for the info, and apologies if I am asking questions that have already been answered but ...... 1. Can the paints within each range be mixed to achieve other shades and colours? 2. Can oil/water be added to the respective ranges to provide variations in transparency? My interest would be in using these for leaded windows, as a kiln is out of my price range!!

Hey thanks for doing the video I've been looking for best glass paint to use since I started and I wish you would do another video that shows these and other types of paints after being in direct sunlight for a month. Some colors fade actually to clear or milky white. The colors I would ask you test the most are purple pink and some red and blues. Purple I just can't seem to find or make happen. It starts fading in a month.

Hi, your video is really helpful. I was thinking a lots of which brands I will use for the windows in my house and decided to go with gallery glass. My question is: can it withstand the heat of the sun in the summer? My living room’s window is the place where to get the most sunlight. If not, which ones should I use? Thanks so much
@GlassPainting
@GlassPainting 3 года назад
If you can bake it I would recommend one of the oven bake brands such as the Pebeo Vitrea 160. If you can't bake it then one of the decent solvent based paints (such as Pebeo Vitrail). I am experimenting with adding a crystal clear UV resistant varnish to the finished piece but it's a little early to gauge any benefits at the moment.

@@GlassPainting hi! Thanks for the video, very helpful. I assumed you cannot use the flowy paints on a window that you cannot take down, right? So then for non-removable windows the only option is the think paint, is that correct?

There are lots of brands of paint including some cheap imports. I find those OK to practice with but wouldn't use them for my proper work as they have neither the colour or the longevity I like. Then type of glass doesn't really matter, you can even use OHP film or perspex.

Do all of these paints require a piping as you termed it or a "liquid lead liner" as gallery glass calls theirs? I have made pieces using gallery glass but currently have a piece where the details are likely too fine for the piping which tends to be a bit thick.
