Yeah sgc gets a lot more older cards so of course they’re going to have less cards grade out at 10 PSA not having a 9.5 and bgs gem being a 9.5 kind of tweaks the numbers here a bit too
@andrewmarks4640
@andrewmarks4640 2 года назад
Not all psa 10s are equal….some could be 9s or 9.5s. PSA is known for controlling 9:10 ratio for some popular inserts. Bgs black label or pristine is still the gold standard.
@pete5691

The pristine is more rare but not really sought after. It’s too rare to really be collectable. Beckett took a gamble and lost on 9.5 being their gem mint.

BGS is touch although they have the highest Gem rate. Beckett is true to the grade.

SGC being historically vintage heavy skews their number, BGS being very modern heavy (not sure if this % includes BVG which is their vintage offshoot) skews theirs and PSA being the whale company with the mix of modern and vintage makes sense in the middle as well. Historically I recall BGS being perhaps a little tougher on centering than PSA, cracking BGS 9.5's with decent looking 9 centering was a profitable move for a little while. PSA while not necessarily the hardest, have recently become the most wildly inconsistent grader, as noted by many well established youtubers and I've seen it in my small sample of two recent returns. Both mid-late 90's basketball, one was relatively on par with expectations with a few "generous" surprises, and the other was consistently a grade lower than expectation. It's a bit of a roulette wheel on which grader you get unfortunately as they expand and grow their grading staff.

I personally think PSA should start Drug Screening there Graders cause I've seen some 10's that I have no clue how they came up with that Grade to be honest

Every card I've every sent to BGS. I received the grade I expected to get. I inspect my cards over and over and over. Usually it takes me sometime to inspect my cards. Because you could miss something. I log each defect and the location of the defect as I inspect the card. Once I feel l've inspected the card throughly I give it a grade.

Hi Dusty, I am commenting before watching your video...IMO, I would say that SGC grades the most consistent (possibly the hardest) unless we're talking about old label BGS cards...easiest company was PSA, because they were VERY forgiving on off centered cards; although the community has complained that their standards have become more strict as of late...I'll now enjoy the video; thanks for putting this together!

Not a good comparison at all. Sgc is a huge company for vintage but they don’t see as much modern, Beckett gets almost no vintage which is why they’re so high and psa gets a mix of everything which is why they’re in the middle.

Nice conversation starter. I think if someone would take 10 popular cards and compared the 3, it would give you a better indication. I guess my thing is not which one grades the toughest, but is the most consistent. From my experience though, and I still haven't graded anything with BGS or SGC yet, CSG grades the toughest, followed by HGA and then PSA. Keep up the nice work
@ryanra44

HGA?
@pete5691
@pete5691 2 года назад
@@ryanra44 They are relatively new. Hybrid grading approach. Take 5k cards at a time but supposedly fell behind on turnaround times still which sorta upset some people. Apparently also something about a fake card that got through but honestly that has happened to them all I’m sure.
@pete5691
@pete5691 2 года назад
SGC is good. Website is easy, slab is nice and grading has seemed reasonable. Ultimately I think without notes sent back with each card, which would probably increase times and cost, how can consistency be truly evaluated? It would take hundreds of cards at least per grader with a third party reviewer.
@ryanra44
@ryanra44 2 года назад
@@pete5691 it wasn’t just a fake card that got through. It was numerous fake cards that got through and a couple of literally made up Mahomes auto cards that weren’t even part of the set they graded. Their quality control on their slabs isn’t good as well. I tried them out. Terrible experience. Would never use them again. 3 of the slabs were bowed, 1 was cracked, one of the cards was mislabeled, and I paid for 30 business day turnaround and it took 81 business days. They then offered to refund my shipping for having to wait, then said they wouldn’t, and said the person that told me that shouldn’t have told me that even though I got it in writing. It’s a clown show over there. I would be shocked if they ever got a reasonable market share. The slabs don’t hold much value on the resale market to boot
@ryanra44
@ryanra44 2 года назад
@@pete5691 put it this way. I know a SGC group submitter that has cracked hundreds of cards out of PSA/BGS slabs to regrade them with SGC. BGS matches up pretty close for what I have seen. PSA can be a crap shoot sometimes. PSA allows for more tolerance on centering based on their own guidelines compared to BGS & SGC. I recently buy a HGA 9 because they gave the card a 8.5 on centering and I knew the centering was flawless based on BGS and SGC 10s I have seen. So I cracked it out and sent it to SGC and it got a 10. HGA has a long way to go before they are as accurate and trusted as the big 3. For grading accuracy I would use BGS or SGC

If they graded Pre-War cards from England, the majority would be 8 and above. I always go for the card and not the grade, though I think if I were to look at my graded vintage stuff, most of it is SGC. I've heard that Beckett is the tougher grade of all, followed by SGC?

3 things that I see could influence this is 1) SGC does (or did) a pile of vintage so no 10s there. 2) PSA has no 9.5, and they get used most for ultra modern so more 10s there. 3) people send "perfect" cards to BGS hoping for a gold 10 or black label 10 grade. So I'd think they would have the most gem mint.

Do people want tough or fair? It’s also different based on who you are, the seller, the buyer or simply a collector? When I send cards in I don’t want the toughest because my 9 might be the other guys 10. However as the buyer/collector you want the best card. At the end of the day it is a hobby not a science and subjectivity will always be present.

SGC is still the most consistent with vintage and now with the addition of so many new graders at PSA , I do not trust anything they do. Watched Kris, Baseball collector Dealer, do a PSA opening box, and it was not pretty as what he predicted and judged from the past wasn't close to the grades he got.

It is interesting data however as you say there is plenty of nuance. Nobody submits vintage to bgs. Back in the day bgs & bvg were considered separate things. If you submitted a vintage card via bgs service they graded it too hard. Cards submitted to bvg were graded easier than psa or sgc. Speaking of sgc prior to 2020 few people submitted modern card to them in fact sgc was best known for pre-war. Of course psa has always been a jack of all trades. If you look at the most graded sets by psa you see 1961 topps ranks high. Psa has graded a lot of vintage commons.

None I have Seen in my hands cards that where 9.5 or 10 and they by just the eye test where not that, do the old way by what you like the look of. Once it gets slabbed is not full proof on that opinion.

To get your BGS rate accurate, you have to back out all bgs gems with any 9 or less sub grades. 9.5 or higher on all 4 subs is the only a true gem (equivalent to psa 10 or sgc 10).
@diversifiedcollectibles9242
@diversifiedcollectibles9242 2 года назад
While on paper you have a good point but a "true gem" is really subjective to some degree.. there have been alot of bgs gem mint's with 3x9.5 and 1x9 that have been cracked out and sent to psa and graded out a psa 10 "true gem" so one grader at bgs might say a card has 3x9.5 and 1x9 whereas someone over at psa or sgc might say otherwise, so it can vary from person to person when talking mint to gem mint, It is a small margin between the two and very subjective from person to person and grader to grader
