Decided to compare all of the current HDZero Cameras, Camera Modes, & Lens Options to see which looks best, and what's the best setup for my uses. But which setup is the BEST for YOU? Hopefully this video will be a helpful reference for everyone?
We compare the Micro V2, Micro V3, Nano V3, Nano 90, & Nano Lite in every mode and swap the lenses around including the Runcam RC5L lens to see how things look. I’m using the HDZero goggles which work in all modes & FPS.
I tried to keep the video fast moving, but also slow enough to compare; but certainly pause & rewind as needed.

@@GiantAntCowboy yeah I have a hard time even knowing the differences, I just don’t have an eye for it. I have enough trouble either getting lenses focused too near or far. I just didn’t feel like I was doing the best job with it. Is really cool and invaluable having the comparisons tho!

@CalleyFPV oh man… focusing lens’ is so tedious! Like you barely touch it and its out of focus. Then get it perfect, but have to tighten the lock ring and everything has changed.. haha! That’s why I put the white board with letters as a reference. I swapped so many lenses that night… pretty good at it now. There’s actually no perfect focus, for my bigger quads I actually go outside and my the trees way in the distance have the best focus, but for a tiny whoop you might focus on stuff 6ft away or less. But yea, small nuances are hard to pick out sometimes.

Just a guess, I think 4:3 transmission has more room in the bandwidth to transmit more data so it can transmit more precise data about the smaller area of camera sensor being used. 16:9 has more camera sensor area data to transmit, so the transmission has less refined data to stay under that bandwidth cap. You put in a serious amount of work into this. Well done and thank you.
@GiantAntCowboy

Yea, that’s kinda my guess as well, but hoping to get some confirmed answer to share. However in the meantime it’s pretty obvious that the 4:3 does in fact look better. Definitely worth trying and seeing how you like it for your uses. I honestly still really like the 1080p30 mode for the large FOV and better details. The slight stutter doesn’t bother me, but when I’m using that mode I’m not doing fast freestyle in tight spaces.

The DVR looks smoother than the Live View because it’s saved as 60fps; I believe. However I use 1080p30 a lot for cruising & smooth freestyle. It definitely has a little stutter but that’s because its 30fps with a fast shutter. I get used to the look very quickly and don’t even notice it after 10 seconds. If they used a slower shutter it’d be smoother but with lots of motion blur. Are you mostly flying smaller quads pretty fast?

Great evaluation, thank you! It seems like a large part of the micro v3 upgrade is the new lens. You confirmed what I thought about the 720 4:3 mode - it looks like a 1280x960 crop of the 1920x1080 sensor. Whereas the 720 16:9 mode should be a 1280x720 crop of the 1920x1080 sensor. This testing will help us decide which lenses to get. I agree 720p60 4:3 seems best, but some pilots might prefer the wider FOV from the v2 or RC5L lenses. I wish HD-zero would document this stuff in detail.
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 3 месяца назад
Yea, absolutely the V3 Lens is a great piece of glass. A great upgrade for the Micro V2, but the Micro V3 did still look a little better. Carl mentioned Runcam updated the FW/sensor settings on the V3. You’re thought about the 4:3 crop seems accurate, definitely a neat “middle of the road” option in terms of quality and performance. The FOV might be too narrow with the V3 lens for some uses, but I’m gonna do some more flights & comparisons to get a better feel for it. The cool thing with HDZero is how customizable it is, lots of options depending on personal preference, flight style, and quad setup! Hope Carl keeps pushing the system. Appreciate the insightful comment and support, cheers!

I'm still on the SharkByte VRX on Skyzone O4X goggles (1280*960). I just ordered a couple of Nano V3 cameras because from what I could tell they will suit the native 4:3 of my goggles better. No idea if I got that right and watching this video here didn't really answer that for me. I'm sure they will be better than my old Micro V1 & V2 anyway. Thanks for all the hard work. Awesome video as always.
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 3 месяца назад
Hey, I don’t have Skyzone O4X goggles to test, but I’m sure the Nano V3 will be a nice upgrade, and perfect for a 4:3 display! You could also order a Micro V3 lens for your V2 Camera which adds some extra clarity in the 4:3 mode. You can see this comparison at the @3:30 mark in the video. You lose some horizontal FOV, but the image is sharper. So it’s a trade off. Thanks for watching, always appreciate the comments & support from folks! Also I’d be curious to hear your thoughts once you’ve used the new cameras. Cheers!

Very good this is a lot of work. 720p 4/3 are very close to 1080p. The major difference is the light.
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 3 месяца назад
Agreed, 4:3 looks great and is 60fps, but it’s a narrower FOV. 1080p does look slightly better and has a larger FOV, but 30fps isn’t as smooth. As you noted 1080p has brighter highlights which helps with the details, this is likely due to 30fps capturing more light. Appreciate the comment, I’ll check playing around with it and share my findings. Cheers!

Yea, many folks love the 90fps mode. I’m gonna put it in a smaller faster quad soon, and try it again. My flight locations are so big that I’m not generally doing tight freestyle or racing, and so the decrease in resolution isn’t justified by the increase in framerate. Regarding the Nano 90 lens swap, I’m not sure what the best options are… I have heard people talk about swapping the lens, but haven’t done so myself yet. Thank you, appreciate the comment. For a 3.5” quad I wouldn’t let weight be the deciding factor… it’s not a micro/tiny whoop. The choice should depend on the expected use. If you’ll be doing light freestyle & cinematic filming then the Micro V3 would be a solid choice, but if you’re going to do really fast freestyle you might consider the Nano 90 actually. Also depends on if you’re using HDZero Goggles or the VRX. I’m actually gonna build a 3” quad soon to put my Nano 90 in. The benefits of this camera (90fps) haven’t been important on my larger quads because I’m not doing super fast freestyle/racing.

@GiantAntCowboy thanks for your reply. I'm confused. Don't all hdzero whoops need a vtx for the camera and all that?. I know the analog whoops have minimal baggage but I always thought the whoops either need the eco vtx or the older whoop lite vtx to go along with the esc board. If I'm off would you please go into more detail. I'm new to this and trying to learn things properly. Cheers

@@BreeZieDoesiT all drones need an FC and ESC, then for FPV they need a VTX/Camera. So if you’re building a whoop you’d need an FC/ESC, and then you’d add a Whoop or ECO VTX. If you wanna run a Nano V3 camera you can’t use the ECO VTX. If you get an AIO FC/ESC with a built in Analog VTX you’ll need to disable the Analog VTX in order to use the HDZero VTX. The 4:3 (960x720) format is compressing 75% of the data as the 16:9 format is in each frame. So I'm guessing the chip is able to do a much better job of compressing each frame accurately and transmitting it in the 15ms window it has to get each frame to the receiver. The chip probably works really hard to get a new frame compressed and transmitted in that 15ms and reducing the payload size means it's operating more comfortably inside it's parameters. The 4:3 ratio also matches the internal compression starting size of 1024x768 inside the hdzero chip, so it doesn't have to scale as much and probably just is designed to work more efficiently with 4:3 aspect ratios. But no-one has any technical details from Divimath about their proprietary compression.

As I briefly shared in the video I did nothing special to get the GPS to work… it’s mount right behind the VTX with no shielding. However I did have some GPS issues a few months ago… long story but: For years I’ve used this cheap TBS M8-2 GPS module with no problems. Then a few months ago I bought two brand new ones and both have major issues maintaining Satellites when the VTX is on. I tried everything to make them work and the only thing the helped was to mount them on top of my battery. (Not ideal) Note: The old GPS module (same model) continues to work fine. In December I bought an HGLRC M100 GPS module, which I used in this video, and it works great! Fast startup, and prefect performance. So in conclusion, performance/issues seem specific to GPS modules, and maybe picking up a new module will solve your problems. The HGLRC M100 is only like $15. Hope that helps, I spent like two weeks testing and trying to make those other modules work… so frustrating.

Hi I'm getting into hdzero but don't know what to choose.Would you choose the hdzero VRX with the cobra x goggles or the emax transporters 2 hdzero

Tough for me to give a solid opinion because I’ve never used either. Do you have goggles now? Or currently fly analog?

@@GiantAntCowboyI don't ,I have 35hours in a sim

Well, if you’re set on HDZero I’d say the EMAX Transporter 2 since they have HDZero Built-in, also the external monitor is cool and they are around $250. The Cobra X are around $250, but will need an HDZero VRX which is an additional $200. That puts you around $450 which is actually how much DJI/Walksnail goggles are currently…

Do you have an external battery mod for your Zorro? Is that a Zorro?
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy День назад
I don’t have an external battery, but did upgrade the standard batteries to 1200mAh cell made by “Keeppower”. Not sure how long they last because barely have enough free time to fly more than 30mins…

@@GiantAntCowboy I had those too but recently, while upgrading firmware, it ran out of battery even though I charged them until the light went out. Bricked my radio but was able to recover after putting the original batteries back in

Can the Nano Lite be replaced with another M8 size lens?
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 3 месяца назад
Sadly no… (sort of) The problem is the Nano Lite camera housing is too short/thin. Meaning the barrel that the lens threads into isn’t long enough to focus any of the lenses I’ve tried (include the Nano V3 lens just now). An option could be to 3D print a new housing with a longer barrel, or some sort of extension which would hold the lens further out. Only like 2-3mm is needed… The sensor itself is the same as the other cameras, so the image would definitely look great with a proper lens.

Nano 90 favorite mode?
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 3 месяца назад
Actually no. 540p90 hasn’t been a game changer for me because I fly in really large environments and the reduction in image resolution isn’t justified by the increased frame rate. In fact I often fly 1080p30 which is the complete opposite! However I’m building a 3” quad to do some fast proximity flying with the Nano 90 and think that’s when I’ll love it! The “Favorite Mode” I mention here is actually 4:3, the resolution is almost as good as 1080p and it’s 60fps, but the FOV is smaller. I’ll be flying more with this mode to see how I like it. Check out the section on this if you missed it. Thanks for watching, cheers!

Dou have a discord or something like this? Would be really cool to have a place where youre community can talk about longrange fpv and help each other out. I got so much help from the drone community discord for my 5" but I cant find any servers that are dedicated to longrange fpv.

I could look into it, don’t think I have enough free time to setup or monitor a discord honestly… any free time I find (usually middle of the night) goes into editing these videos. I often contribute to the Long-Range sections of the HDZero & Botgrinder discords. Community help is an awesome part of this hobby and supporting the hobby is the main reason I make these videos. So thanks for your comments and support!
