Which Is Better Rocket Fuel, Salami or Cheese? 

This was probably the last rocket video with our tiny rocket. Design for the large rocket is now complete and we are working on electronics and will I will also start machining parts quite soon. It will have peak thrust of 1000 Newtons which is over 7000 times more than that salami thing had :D So I think it's going to be pretty good... Try hydraulically pressing the fuel into the tube, for better density and homogenity. Maybe you can even make a tool that will create the central cavity during pressing. Compressed paper would be interesting to see. Different types of plastic too. Compressed dry foods also.

Guys, I think one of the issues you are having with the more "meltable" fuels is: *Gravity*. Recall that your first Play-doh rocket burned cleaner (before losing containment) - it was vertical. All your tests since have been horizontal. With horizontal fuel cores, the heat tries to rise, preferentially melting the fuel above the oxygen conduit, causing it to drip down into the gas flow and clog the nozzle - causing those bursts. I suggest re-orienting the test stand so the exhaust is going downwards for a more even burn. Measuring the thrust will be more tricky, but I'm sure you can come up with something.

If only you had some sort of device to compress the fuel into the tube tightly!

Salami works and has been done by Mythbusters, but Mythbusters don't have Anni ;-)

I recommend sugar! Hardened melted sugar. It burns at around 4k degrees and produces a lot of energy.

you should have used lard (or butter), just melt it, pour it into the engine until it's full, leave to cool/harden, then drill your hole and off you go :)

Maybe experiment with punching a star shaped hole down the centre rather than drilling a circular hole. Perhaps there will be a faster and more complete fuel burn. (Similar cross section to the Space Shuttle solid rocket boosters.)

You should do a rocket where you use the press to make hardened salami in it, i think it would work better compacted

Hi Beyond the press, have you tried melting wax into the chamber and test firing that? Or just jam a large candle in there with the press.

Sugar should work quite well, as it is extremely energy-dense; I've seen it being used as an initiator for (humid) thermite.

Try filling the tube with melted sugar and let it cool off. Then you'll have a solid block of sugar you can drill through. I think it should be a good fuel.

Really great, if world runs of fuel, we can still use bio-fueled salami rockets instead. I hope, that human-manned-salami-cheese-powered rocket will do well. You schould try coal, its pure energy. Or wax (drilled candle) Or rubber Or wood, plastic (you can 3D print hollow rocket to test) Maybe cotton/wool (no drilling needed) Hair? Silk? Lest go funny - use marshmallows, crushed fidgets (stupid), old book, gelly (too much water i think) So many ideas to check, keep doing :)

What would happen if you heat up the salami to vaporate the water first? Would that work better?

Make a thermobaric explosion using corn starch. You create a pile of corn starch, put a candle next to it, lay a long piece of tube next to it all. Place a tin over both and blow through the tube. Guaranteed big explosion. Then do the same with a barrel or a drum.

This is exactly the kind of screwing around I like to see.

I think the salami just never had enough oxygen, I saw mythbusters test it (i think they used LO2 rather than gaseous Oxygen. Their one exploded a few times but eventually got massive liftoff! Hope the new rocket design is running you well, can't wait to see it!!

If you are still going to do weird fuel videos, you should do Crayons as fuel. I think they will work quite well.

try burning hazelnuts, they should burn like hell after they catch some heat.

I think the salami would have worked better if it was one whole salami instead of sliced. Maybe even dry it out beforehand to reduce water content.

Perhaps you could make a two-phase rocket by adding half salami, half cheese!

My guess is there are charts that graph the combustibility of anything and everything, including foods like meat and dairy products. Included would no doubt be precise analysis of the ingredients and ratios of flame retardant qualities, melting temperatures, and other factors which would increase, or decrease combustion.

Uncut, dry Italian salami would work much better. Mythbuster's made a rocket out it and it flew very well.

If you ever do another salami rocket, don't get sliced salami, get it uncut in a long roll and make sure it's dried salami.
