WHICH IS THE BEST (LOW BUCK) JUNKYARD TURBO COMBO (5.3L vs 6.0L) WHICH ONE IS BEST FOR BOOST?

IS THE 5.3L LS BETTER THAN THE 6.0L? DOES SIZE MATTER? Which LS is Better For Boost? 5.3L VS 6.0? DOES ONE MAKE MORE? Which JUNKYARD displacement is your go-to motor? Can the smaller 5.3L ACTUALLY compete with the larger 6.0L? Is the big motor too fragile OR WILL THE HEAD GASKETS FAIL? Is turbo sizing critical FOR POWER? What about FOR an NA build? HOW DOES THE JUNKYARD 5.3L COMPARE TO THE LARGER JUNKYARD 6.0L WHEN IT COMES TIME FOR BOOST AND WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

It’s not a 5.3 vs 6.0 question (I think) for most people. It’s a 4L60 vs 4L80 question. It’s almost easier to pick up a 6.0, boost it, and not worry about blowing up the trans.

Well, you're familiar with my thoughts. I have 6.0's because I'm paying the same price for them, but otherwise, if it spins, it wins. For power levels that will make the average person poop on the street, it really doesn't matter. Get a complete one that spins and roll. I do agree equal or greater power with less boost is always better. I would rather see a guy doing burnouts with the 5.3 he can get today than saving up for a 6.0 tomorrow, then wind up punting the whole thing on marketplace and never doing a burnout.

I have a modified Mitsubishi Starion and I’m leaning towards the 6.0 because I’m going to hold on to the car for a longer time, and is lower and lighter from what I’ve been told. As I go towards boost and I think making more power at less boost will lead to me not having to worry about breaking stuff right off the bat and therefore losing money replacing stuff because I’m trying to roll with the higher boost levels.

Keep up the great work. I look forward to the daily videos. One thing I am curious about, mind you I haven't spent any time researching this on my own, is the effects of larger max out put single turbos vs drivability. Ie running s480 or s485 vs smaller turbos will drivability suffer? Will power only come in after 4000 Rpm or can that all be adjusted using proper boost controller and tune? Pretty open ended but it is something I have been curious about. Thank you.

As someone who actually owns a turbo LS in a street truck, you need a lot of chassis/tire for 600hp. I have a 5.3 and 7875 and have considered the 6.0 but I think the extra power down low will just make my non-existent traction worse. I run my setup at 10psi most days because it's easy on my high mileage 5.3 and the truck is still insanely fast.

The way it was set up had nothing below 3k and then when boost came on like getting hit in the asz with a dump truck. That was one of the funnest cars I’ve driven. Hurt a lot of feelings with that baby LS...never blew the engine and always ran good, still sitting in the shop.

Honestly, if I were looking at a budget build, there is more to consider then just the engine. If you run a turbo 4.8 you will get tons of power but less low end torque so you don't have to run a $3000 transmission and your modified stock suspension might survive. I think the biggest mistake people make is trying to go fast in a heavy car, a 3500 pound car will get it's butt handed to it by a 2500 pound car. A light car saves money everywhere.

@AdamOpheim 4 года назад
Last thing any turbo LS needs is more low end torque! A 6.0 looks great on a dyno sheet, sure. But by the time u add 20+lbs to a 4.8 or 5.3, youll be running all kinds of traction control and power management that will pull timing and boost. I pull tons of power from my 4.8 and 5.3 setups. So a 6.0 would just require more power to be pulled to make a useable power for something on the street... and thats with a BIG drag radial or slick. Forget about it with a standard tire.

I can tell you from a heavy truck point of view it’s hard to beat the 6.0 and 6.2. I was a 5.3 guy for years and years and one day my timing gear broke which took out the motor. I got a 6l at a really good deal and wow what a difference. It was so much nicer to drive out of boost. I was on leave in arkansas when it happened and I had towed my toy behind the tahoe. On the way back home with the 6l I didn’t spoil the turbo near as much just because the 6l had so much more torque to pull hills I didn’t need the boost like the 5.3 did. If all you are doing is racing then MAYBE it doesn’t mater as much. But for daily driving in a heavy 6000lb truck the 6 and 6.2 is WAY better. It has a 6.2 now and a much bigger turbo cause the single tc78 was a tad small on the hot side for the 6.2.

I get it, displacement is good and reliable. That said 8 psi on a 4.8 is always gonna be faster than a cam only early 90s 454 with a stock head. And it's hard to justify that extra 1000$ for the extra 50 ci when I could do the entire turbo setup on the 5.3 for the cost of using a 6.0 Instead
@hhn2002
@hhn2002 3 года назад
Depends on end goal. Once you have that then everything else is just a calculation based on research. Decide hp target then you can size turbo, engine, and upgrades to maximize the power band. Of course Budget is the other co-limiting/deciding factor. Bigger is not always better, if you care about handling at all.

The Richard vs. Richard argument was hilarious. For My money, the engine I choose would be based on the big picture of the build, the vehicle's mass AND it's intended use.. In a true street car that's heavy, the area under the curve is where it's at. For a light weight drag car with tons of turbo and converter, I think it matters less. And ultimately, the bigger engine is gonna make more power everywhere.

There are 6.0’s all over the yards here in Maryland! Not as plentiful as 5.3’s, but they’re definitely available. Every once in a while you’ll find a gen 4 motor, but people normally snatch them up as soon as the truck gets to the yard. I’m ALL GOOD with the Gen iii baby! They’re rock solid motors

I think the problem is there’s a lot of builds that aren’t built correctly and the engines are catastrophically failing and people are hypothesizing that the cylinder walls distorted and running with that narrative.
@michaelking1869
@michaelking1869 4 года назад
Pretty much. In the world of automotive in general people blame what they don't understand. They think they understand that aspect of the engine because it makes sense in their head and because they've heard it/read it somewhere so that must be it.

The 6.0 also with having the 4.00" bore, you are open to utilize rectangle port heads (LS3/L92/LY6). Bigger valves are nice to have that option on the table.

799/243 heads have same valve size, smaller chamber= higher compression
@dahliametal
@dahliametal 3 года назад
@@diduck6878 the LS3/L92/LY6 heads have a 2.165" intake valve as opposed to the 2.00" intake valve on the 243/799. They are significantly larger and flow much more. You are correct with chamber size and compression, however that can be changed with milling of the heads and/or thinner head gaskets.

I'm currently running a Gen 3, 5.3 in a '68 C10 with a 700r4. I used a few durability parts like a new oil pump, LS2 timing chain and bushed the rocker arms with new one piece pushrods. Go fast parts, BTR Stage 3 cam, Fitech Ultimate LS Induction w/ 95mm throttle body and long tubes. The long block is stock down to the 706 heads and it's quite lively in that truck running very low 12's. I got the motor for $500 and sold the harness, water pump and misc. parts for $300. The motor had 41,000 miles on it, there are plenty of them around for that price. I've only seen 1 6.0L for sale in 3 years around here out of a wreck with 131,000 mi. and the yard wanted $1500 for it. The choice is simple and if you want to pressurize it who's going to know the difference between 1200 and 1500 hp on the street and could you really put it down on the track with a street vehicle ? The engine in my little truck most likely makes just shy of 440hp and on full tilt can be a handful. I might turbo it in the future, keep it mild at or just under 2 atmospheres and enjoy the sound and occasional kick in the butt into the 11's but for the extra cost of the 6.0L I don't think it's worth it besides, I bought a Gen 4 5.7 rotating assembly for penny's from a local machine shop, I just might have to get the boring bar out.
