What a brilliant video!! Also in Brisbane and returning to the hobby after a 35 year break. It's a new world. So begining all over again. Thanks. 🙂

Seems we are part of a growing community of people returning to the hobby after long breaks. Fantastic. This is something that excites me a great deal. And another Brisvegas person too. Thank you so much for the positive feedback. It helps keep me on track and I know that viewers are getting some value from what I'm creating. Hope to hear from you again very soon.

Hi Stewart! I subscribed to your channel recently, and I am enjoying the content enormously. This was an extremely helpful discussion and explanation of the different paints out there that are available to us. Like another commenter here, I have returned to modelling after a very long break, only to find the methods and materials now used in the hobby was like a jigsaw puzzle to me, only with a lot of pieces missing. I am in my early 70’s, and I think I built my last model in my late teens. The kits available now are fantastic, and the build process gives me a lot of satisfaction, but I have a lot of trouble getting the paint job right. Your video was one of the best I have seen, and explained the qualities and performance of each paint, perfectly. I only use acrylics, and stick with a couple of the brands you talked about, but I have been wanting to try Mission Models products for quite a while now, and after your description of their qualities I will definitely give them a try. Looking forward to more channel content in the future. Cheers for now mate, from south of the border!

Glad you're enjoying the content and found this particular video of use for you. I think that in some ways I'm like many of us on the shady side of 40... did a fair bit of modelling in my youth and dropped it as other life pursuits like Uni or Work took priority. I've kept in touch with the hobby on and off over the years and in only the past 6-7 have I really jumper back in and seriously aimed at being the best I can given I still work a full-time career in horticulture :) Really good news to hear you want to give MMP a crack. They have some big pros and if you want to primarily use acrylics my personal belief is that they are fantastic. But you need to use them in their own self contained system. Don't use other paints or thinners in the same airbrush or bristled brush. Cross contamination from alcohol based products is a big no no. There's lots of little tricks and whilst I'm also a strong believer in using Tamiya hybrids as well, MMP has its place as a great paint. Best of luck with what you do. Keep in touch and share your experience as I'd love to see how it all works out.

@@BlackHatScaleModels - Hi again Stewart. If I am reading you right, you are saying that an airbrush intended to be used with MM paints and thinners, should only be used for those paints in future to avoid contamination if then used with other brands like Tamyia? So an airbrush designated solely for use with MMP products? Sorry, but I just want to make sure I am on the right track so I don’t stuff something up when I try these paints. Cheers mate!

@@garylawless3608 Yes Gary, that is correct. Mission Model Paints are made from organic compounds and will break down on immediate contact with alcohol based thinners or paints. Tamiya paints have alcohol as the base compound. So do most chipping fluids and hairspray. So the only safe way to use MMP and minimise the chances of issues is to ensure you have an airbrush (assuming you are using an airbrush for your painting) that is ONLY used with your Mission Models Paints. Use only water or Mission Models thinner to clean that airbrush. You have to be very specific with this as I think it's the root cause for the problems that some people have with MMP. They blame the paint, but I'd bet it's cross contamination with alcohol based products. I have 4 airbrushes on my workbench. 2 are for Tamiya paints, and 2 for Mission Models. I'm not saying you need to do that either hahahaha.... but I strongly suggest if you want to use Mission Models and another paint system, you will need 2 airbrushes.

@@BlackHatScaleModels - Thanks Stewart, that answers my question. I have a couple of airbrushes, including one that I have not used as yet, so it will be easy to ensure that I adhere to these recommendations for MM paints. Thanks again for your help.

Thank you for such an interesting review. I'm in the process of moving away from Tamiya hybrids and swapping them for Mission Models paint. Reason being to, as you said, limit chemical use/toxicity where ever I can. You mention the brilliant work of Michael Rinaldi. I would love to see a deeper dive into how you use oils, and your techniques for oil paint rendering.

It very much sounds to me like you're on a similar journey as I did. Michael Rinaldi has his own RU-vid livestream series (look for Rinaldi Studio Press, I'll post the link below) that he has been running for 3 years now. I highly recommend jumping across to see his extensive library of techniques if you have time. He is without doubt one of the Masters who is still working hard in our hobby and passing on techniques that I believe all scale modellers can find something for themselves. In my build series videos I will be demonstrating Michaels OPR (Oil Paint Rendering) process as it's a key component of my own weathering techniques. Combined with the use of dry pigments for mud and dust effects, it's a powerful system that gives us professional results. Thanks for the feedback. I really do appreciate it. A good look at different paint systems, thanks Stewart. Question: As a "middle aged" returnee to scale modelling with limited play money, is there a one stop shop for paint? As in would it be OK to have only Tamiya paints in your arsenal and not have all the other bits and pieces from other brands? Also whats the possibility of seeing a video of some of your previous completed builds and how you store/display them? It would be great to see some of the finished work you have created to visualise some of the things you have discussed in these videos.

Absolutely you can choose to use a single paint system for your needs. Tamiya would be a good choice too as they do have a very large range of colours and finishes available. If you are working on a limited budget and just getting back into the hobby this makes a lot of sense. I'd be happy to showcase some of my completed work. I still have some of my earlier stuff so that would be a good way to demonstrate my own journey over the years. Keep an eye out as I'll run up a video on these in between the current build series videos for the E-60. Thanks for the suggestion
