I used the Turtle wax stuff shown and it went on easy and has lasted for a month now. It looks nice and beads water and has not faded yet through several washes and rains. I'm not really concerned if it last for months and months, I enjoy cleaning my car.
I use back to black on my foggy headlights, says it works on all plastic surfaces, makes them nice and shiny! 15 year old truck and the headlights look almost brand new now!
Before I watched this I went to Walmart and PU a bottle of Meguires. I applied it on the black of my motorcycle. I am pleased. I am going to give it a second coat and see if it is even darker. They say we may have to apply 2-3 applications. Glad you liked the Turtle Wax. I am going to try that next. Follow up: The Meguires definitely gets better with repeated applications. My motorcycle seats are now shiny black! I obviously don’t apply it where or sit.
I've used the Meguiars on 6 year old car that had a lot of fading black trim...it worked very well....6 months later it's still looking good but definitely not as good as it did when it was first applied....I think if you do this on your cars twice a year, you'll be good to go.
I used the Meguairs on my old Honda CRV (lots of trim). It worked really well. As this video showed, it's not super glossy, but I think it would look strange if it was shiny. I'm pretty happy with it.
I have used Meguires for years after using different brands, they all mostly look good for a few weeks but Meguires is the only one that seems to last, I use it on new cars too and it keeps tge trim looking new.
Solution Finish is the best for discoloured, aged plastics. Gtechniq C4 is also great for sealing in the Solution Finish or for less knackered plastics.
Glad we got to see it with the tape off for a second at the end. Would have been interesting to maybe spray each with some water and wipe it down to see if it just went back to faded. I'll probably try the Mother's for my GSX side skirts, unless the Turtle Wax is way cheaper.
They were all about the same price, I would recommend either the mothers or the turtle if you are looking for longevity. They were pretty similar and went on pretty thick. Good idea on the water test, maybe I'll try that and put it on instagram or just a separate video.
Ya have to try Cerakote ceramic coating for trim. Works awesome and lasts 6mos. Love the stuff...I use it on my wife's 2011 subaru outback..it had lower plastics about 14 inches wide on the whole car. Make sit look new.
I didn't like it either. It was very greasy and doesn't seem to penetrate at all. It just sits on top of the plastic and does not make it look more black.
Isoamyl acetate is an organic ester that is the smell in bananas (ther esters provide the aromas of other fruits). It was used as "aircraft dope," a nitrocellulose solvent when fabric was stiffened in early aircraft. Likely added more for the aroma here, than practical solvent, but maybe is actually useful. Still, smearing shiny oils on is like, hundred year old technology, not modern polymer science.
a true test would be to put it back out in the sun and let it dry there. I watched a video just prior to this where Turtle Wax is compared to another product (Finish Solution) and the Turtle wax failed miserably (although it was 1/5 the price). This test you probably copuld have just put Armorall and gotten a glossy shine that looked black. Thanks for your efforts but I donthink it accurately depicts the products capabilities. Just saying!
I used the Mothers one with a microfiber cloth, not great results but it was much better if applied using a small brush. I'm guessing that worked the product into the grain of the plastic.
All, the majority trim/plastic restorers do not work! this does not remove the hardened white oxidized calcium at the surface. A bandaid that fills in the oxidized pours. Sanding/buffing & long term uv sealers or clear vinyl covers. No disrespect if have a different opinion.
One thing I noticed with the Mother at least is that a few days after using it, it rained and the residual ran down the side of my truck. I applied the product and buffed it off as best I could when I used it. I wonder if the other products do the same thing.
Which ones attract dust and dirt? Usually those shiny wet looking products grab and hold dust. I like the Meguires because it’s not too shiny and does not attract dirt.
I use the black bottle Maguire's it's better for me non grisy and it doesn't collect alot of dirt like the oily grisy ones you just gotta apply it every 2 a week and you'll see good results
I have used meguiers and im not to impressed by the product. So I will try others mother seems to be a popular choice! Great video keep up the great work
Video recommendation: Can silicon spray like Permatex Silicon Lubricant be used in rubber in the door jamb, hatch and under the hood to protect them from being brittle? In addition, can it serve as trim restorer? TIA! ☺️
My truck has grey trim, and the mothers seems to do the trick, this stuff doesn't contain any paint or anything, its kinda like a lotion mixed with a small amount of butyl acetate(organic compound typically used to create lacquers and paints) and morpholine(corrosion inhibitor/solvent)
Next time consider comparing, Trim Serum, Finish Solutions, and Cerra Trim (cote). Then wash 3 times and leave exposed to the Sun and weather for a month. All are in the $ 30 range .
I’m restoring a radiator shroud on an old 78 ford bronco the plastic seems very dense not porous so will have to withstand Hugh heat conditions not really a uv light concern what’s the best recommendation?
Which of these is best for resisting wear, I plan to use one of these on a pair of black headphone which will be constantly handled, looking for something which doesn’t wear off, thanks
I would absolutely not put these on something you are often touching with your hands. All of these products are basically just shiny goop that hides defects.
Westbound70 I,ve found none seem to last . Using a good quality paint for plastic works

Mothers didn't last long at all from my experience and reading the comments seems to be a trend with the rest. There has to be a better solution, these seem to be one day fixes at best.
Awesome info. Only thing missing would be how it looks after a wash. I mean I wouldn't mind reapplying every 3 months but if it comes right off after let's say 2 washes, is it even worth the time?
Turtle wax leaves a Greasy Residue... Takes a few days before residue is Gone .. meantime it Collects dirt/dust like magnet... no matter how hard you try to wipe after application.... Not recommended ...
@@WolfmanZX that stuff is nasty, sometimes too glossy which causes glare from the sun, and there are plenty of people who are sensitive to whatever chemicals are in that film.
Depends on how often you touch it and the environment. This is a restorer though, its like lotion for plastics to help prevent the plastic from drying out.
I left my 07 Frontier with a car cover on that I bought from Auto zone I left the cover on for a month the cover states is water resistant well after a month on and couple days of rain the back plastic trim from the truck turn gray I've tried the red moma product but it didn't do anything I guess because the gray that is on the trim is from the truck cover any ideas on how to restore the trim of my truck
@@wideband Hi There! How are these products fothe interior use? Like the faded black vinyl / leather look inthe door panels where the door handles are? Please let me know. Thank you.
This stuff sucks on my Genesis. Thank goodness it was easy to wash off. It turned all my black parts a chalky white. Just using Griots Long Lasting Tire Shine and it's gorgeous.
Wow thank you!!! I love this demo!!! I have a 2004 Toyota Camry with dingy pillar posts. I love the Turtle Wax outcome and will give this a try! I subscribed!! I’m a car gal and love fixing up hoopties hehe.
I also have a 2004 Camry, the pillar posts have faded to grey, sounds like same issue as yours. Did you try any of these products, and did you have any success ? Any help greatly appreciated.
Proof is in the pudding. Put your examples outside in the sun and let it sit and then let's see which one is the better under combat conditions. Your test is inconclusive at this point.
