We're throwing no less than 25 putters to see which one flies the furthest! But first, why should you throw putters at all? The most common mistake new players make is reaching for those high speed distance drivers because Speed = Distance right? RIGHT!? Let's find out.
Remember, the flight of a disc is determined by many factors including the player, local conditions and more. Get out and throw discs to find out whether the Flight Numbers Matter or NOT.

@@Jim3Mix I have thrown the baseline founders edition loft a lot. personally I felt like the baseline keystone from a couple trilogy challenges ago, was my go to off the tee. definitely would give the loft a run for its money on straight line. I enjoyed both of them. Now that was before the glitch, ID be very surprise to see anything straighter then the glitch.

There are a number of reasons new players should throw (drive / upshots) with mids and putters I would add to your excellent list. I agree the term "putter" to a new user, because of golf, is assumed to mean only goes 20 ft. When advising a new player to throw putters we also want them to use "throwing putters" generally meaning premium plastic. The biggest problem with new users and putters is that putters have a thin/narrow rim. This generally means they are difficult to hold with a "power grip" (back hand) which all new players learn and think is necessary to throw far. You need to show a new player a more comfortable grip, generally a fan or modified fan grip. 1. They give new players and those helping them immediate feedback. It is much easier to see OAT, nose angle, hyzer/flat/anhyzer release. High speed disks tend to mask these numbers. 2. High speed discs (fairway / 13-14 speed), thrown at low speeds, do not perform as they should, they will tend to fly over stable. This leads to bad habits as new players will (RHBH) throw to the right rather than straight or throw anhyzer rather than hyzer, which for most people is less powerful / less distance. 3. High speed discs generally mean more weight / inertia which then leads to throwing hard using the arm -> bad technique and injuries. 4. They are more forgiving both with accuracy (more likely to go straight) and generally deflect shorter distance off trees -> means new players are more likely to be taking their next shot from the fairway. 5. It gives them faster access to strategy. It is disc golf not disc throw as far as possible. While we all recognize the premium of distance immediately, new players lose accuracy when throwing high speed discs far, and they think they are doing well because they just threw 20 ft further, never mind it is also 20 ft off the fairway.

I use my midrange for everything until I get close enough to basket for a putt. When I throw my putter for distance, the release is odd and doesn’t go the direction I want it to. It feels big and bulky in my hand. I’ll give it another go tho.

Firstly, I'm a beginner/novice. So take anything I say in that light. I throw putters, but only up to about 200 feet. I do that for 2 reasons. 1, it goes very straight. 2, if thrown on a slight hizer, it keeps it to the ground and has almost no skip. I've seen Paige and Paul throw their putters dead straight up to 300 feet. I can't imagine someone wanting to throw a putter that far or further except to go dead straight. If you're not Paige or Paul, I don't really see the sense in reporting on what discs do when you overpower them. At those distances, there are higher speed discs that can give you the results you want without throwing that hard. The less energy you have to put into a throw to achieve the desired results, the better, as it likely will have more control and be more accurate. As a beginner, this is magnified for me. My control and accuracy is middling at best. When I try to throw full power, accuracy and control go out the window and discs end up on my roof. 😂 I would be interested in a video that tests which disc are most accurate (or straight) at a normal effort throw and distance, such as between 150 to maybe 250 or 300 feet max. Thanks for sharing.

The MVP Ohm in Neutron plastic is one of the first discs I ever bought back before I learned that you don’t want premium plastics as actual putting putters, but it’s stayed in my bag as my favorite throwing putter. Even though it’s a 2 speed, the glide and forward fade are perfect for shots up to 300+ ft. Even after beating it in for the last 15 months, it has absolutely no turn, no fade, and flies straight as can be. It’s similar to a Glitch, but I have found it to be much more useful and practical.

There is a myth that could be explored in something you said….the past year I switched to lighter discs due to a rotator cuff issue. I presumed I was throwing the discs faster which is why I could get “the same distance with less effort.” After recently purchasing a pocket radar, I realized that light and normal weight discs are getting thrown the same speed. In hindsight, it makes sense. The weight of body parts and athletic strength used to rotate the body in a backhand swing completely overshadows a 20gram variation in the disc. Maybe this myth comes from the difference in throwing an 8lb bowling ball verses a 16lb ball which does vary in release velocity. That being said, the 150g mvp fission drivers are beyond amazing at flying through the air with ease and wind resistance. Can’t really see going back to full weight drivers at this point.
@ethanbeachy6593
@ethanbeachy6593 11 месяцев назад
As an engineer (even though not specializing in flight dynamics I did some work with hydrofoils and studied fluid dynamics) I tend to agree that the difference in release velocity is probably pretty minimal, at least with halfway decent form. I think it's likely a bigger different that the disc will produce the same amount of lift (barring slight differences in cooling, etc.) but the weight that lift has to hold is lower, allowing the lift to keep it airborne longer and fly further. There are other complicating factors and I may be wrong of course but that is my thought.

I always enjoy the "flight numbers don't matter" videos, but this is by far the best one yet. Great work as always! I finally decided to Subscribe. 🙃 I personally throw Fission Envys and Proxies as my regular throwing putters and throw them 250-270 with ease, but can pump them up to 290-300 max. Although, now that I think about it, I've never really taken my putters to a field to try and throw for max distance. All those numbers are golf line throws on courses, where I'm shooting for score, so you can take it with a grain of salt. However, I have also thrown the Inner Core, Dagger, Luna, Spin, Keystone, Pure, Pixel, Narwhal, and Challenger. I think I can get most all of these to the 250-270 ft distance. My opinion is that the disc that fits a person's hand best is the one they will be able to throw the furthest, if that makes sense.

Yeah, I've recorded a few hundred throws and even though my distance sucks, surprise surprise, the higher speed lower drag drivers go the furthest if I choose stability that allows me to get a full flight. Same with all the brand new players I've introduced: they always do better with the 8 speed Diamond than the 4 or 5 speed flippy mids. I've never seen a shred of evidence showing that slow arms throw putters or midranges further than flippy drivers, just cheap talk.

My most thrown putter is the Axiom Neutron Soft Proxy which I believe is the best throwing putter in disc golf. I utilize it mostly for it's accuracy rather than its distance (which I believe would personally max out at around 310 feet or so). I have never thrown a disc that locks into an angle and holds it more than a premium plastic Proxy, especially after you beat the fade out of it which doesn't take long. I recommend it to everyone I can and haven't heard anyone who's thrown it say that didn't love it. Envy's get all the love, but Proxy's are where it's at people!

I recently learned how to throw "correct" and another lesson for beginners is that midrange and putter are easier to throw because nose angle isn't as important to get the desired flight, very good for learning how to throw it before learning how to control the angle. I only throw distance drivers like 110-140 meters and midranges 80-100m which isn't a huge difference. that's about to change as I'm throwing way further very rapidly right now also shoutout to the classic blend Warden, straightest stable no fade torque resistant putter ive thrown and its what turned me on to throwing putters

I throw a very small bag, only 7 discs, and that includes my putting putter. That being said, the only putters I bag are and aviar for putting, a Beetle for touchy upshot, and then there is the Maestro. I love my maestro, and even though it doesn't get classified as a putter, it flies like one. I don't feel the need to bag more putters because the maestro does anything, but I do throw it all the time. It has even kicked the mids out of the bag. I could play a one discs round and not miss my others that much.

Not really sure what you can actually take out of this video except for the throw putters part. I don't see max distance as any kind of criteria for my throwing putters. In fact usually the slower the discs, the more stable (not over- or understable) the disc is and more consistent the result. I can throw my Wardens 300ft, but wouldn't really mind maxing out earlier as long as I got faster discs to cover for the longer holes. I get it that if you don't know the mid you are throwing the results are erratic, but throwing a straight mid you know should be pretty consistent. That being said, the video was still entertaining and certainly gets more new players to try out putters so job well done. :)

I like to know my limits with my putters. If my max controlled distance is 300ft (it isn't, unless it's downhill, more like 200ft) but I've been trying to throw whatever disc will go that far, no further. Earlier today we were throwing an open, 280ft shot, so I threw a backhand midrange that I can't quite get to 300ft and parked it. Doesn't always work so well but it worked well on a shorter course today. Glad you enjoyed the video! PSA for new players: try putters please

Just a follow-up. I did go to my local park course last night, and...One of the things in this video that you discussed early was the average arm speed of players. I am MA3, rated at 850, with tournament play last year and 2023. The arm speed and form difference of MA3 to the MA1 player in this video should be noted. Very few MA3 players rated below 885 will throw 300+ feet with a putter and have the small area spread. I am in that 225 - 260ft range with a Luna or Fierce. But, I play with some MA1 guys who can 330 - 350ft with their putters. Just a reminder to us all that the putter is not what makes the distance; it is form and it includes arm speed.

@@stuartschwenke6656 Lots of variables here. I know a 850 rated MA3 player that bombed a Discraft Hades to 385ft on flat land and is definitely an average 350ft thrower with a 57 mph arm speed. He definitely can not throw a putter even close to 275ft. So your right its technique.

I mainly throw Berg for distance control, I can squeeze about 90 meters out of it on a good day, but its' real job is to nail the awkward distances between 30 and 60 meters. I'm trying out the new Berg X too, it is definitely another not-as-overstable-as-expected model from Kastaplast, but I for now think it's still a welcome improvement on the classic Berg, a touch more fade for added accuracy. Sometimes I may bag something like a Fission Envy if the course absolutely requires long putter shots. In 150 class weight it gets me in the 100 meter club just barely, but long putter drives are not really my game. Entropy goes in and out depending on how tight the course is, but Troija and Berg do the chip-up duties most of the time. I used to be a big Dart thrower too. It flies marvellously in Star plastic on a backhand throw, very high-speed stable with low fade and massive glide. It's just not a great forehand disc so it eventually had to give way for something more versatile. The R-Pro and DX versions really felt like different discs and not nearly as dependable.

Its not glidey and i dont have good armspeed, but i can probably put it to 220 with good accuracy. Great disc imo. Love throwing putters! I've always encouraged others to do so as well. There are a few more factors to consider when throwing putters, however. They tend to be more sensitive to nose angle and off-axis torque (OAT). I threw Pro Aviars for over a decade before exploring Luna, Envy, and others. I settled on the Discmania Link because it is the most OAT resistant. I can smash it hard and trust it not to flip, even if I'm tired and the nose angle is off and the form gets a little dirty. Normally I would expect such a putter to have a lot of fade, but the Link does not! It doesn't glide as far as other putters, only getting comfortably out to 275 or so, but I think that's a good thing. If I'm putting my main throwing putter over 300', then what am I carrying mids for?

@lozo4745 11 месяцев назад
For me it comes down to when I need a huge Skip, strong wind, occasional fh, or low ceiling were a putter just doesnt cut it. Or I might need that little bit extra d and dont have to throw as hard to achieve with a mid.
@meister-t
@meister-t 8 месяцев назад
To reduce confusion it should be labelled "Throw Speed" or "ArmSpeed" (for mids and up anyways). And I do wish manufacturers wouldn't lie about some discs' glide to make them look better (for example, instead of rating the River 8s 5g, marketing decided that the numbers would look more impressive, helping sales, if they called it a 7s 7g instead. and they were right. since then, mislabelling discs is catching on)

I bag a berg, toro, halo aero, and a neutron spin. I've parked a 280ft hole with the spin. But I can pump the aero out to 300. The praxis can also get out to 300 once you beat it in. But yeah, throw more putters. Kills me to see so many players that would benefit from learning how to throw putters. Hardest part to get over is the grip. Power gripping putters doesn't work for me, I had to learn how to fan grip with the nose down. Curious to try a fierce / luna... I'm always on the lookout for bomb putters.

Very interesting. Also those average arm speeds. Regarding high speed drivers. The thing that makes them high speed is that they have less drag. So while they can start flying at the same speed as a slower disc. They lose that speed slower so they’ll still fly faster later in the flight. Interestingly, Lizotte showed that high speed drivers still fly well and further at lower speeds (even as slow as 40MPH). They just require better technique. The reason beginners should avoid throwing distance drivers is mainly because they do not throw nose down. That being said, high velocity is still important in getting the most out of a faster disc.

Fierce and Luna are the new ones in my bag, so I have to learn how they fly. Fierce I use, when I putt 80foot+. I can imagine, that if somebody has a good control with a new Innova Aero, it could make some records. I don´t see the list of those 25 discs, but I´m pretty sure, you didn´t use Yikun Discs Gui (is it an other name of a Prodigy disc?). I have only in a basic plastic, but it flies looooong (backhand & sidearm).

im not surprised the pure and the reko didnt make it. i recently bought those 2 to find a new putting-putter and got those 2 because they only have 13 or 14mm rim depth to see if a more shallow putter would finally give me a more comfortable putting grip. and since they are so shallow i assume they dont go as far since they still have that putter edge but lose glide

The farthest I've thrown the Proxy is 360+ ft. Yes, the Luna/Fierce in premium plastics are bombers. The Big Z Fierce I have and the 2022 ESP Luna's I have fly identical to each other.

What?! My P Model S (Duraflex) is so darn understable for its numbers, the P Model US got it by several tics in stability. A "normal" headwind and it will go from steep hyzer to throller often. :S I would not react unless the manufacturer itself got the numbers messed up in the same line. Nice video! =) Would be nice to see the JOKERi fly ^_^ Oh, and how much more stable is the ESP Tour series Fierce compared to a Cryztal Sparkle one? My 3x European Open commerative seems way less stable.
@Iliyena87
@Iliyena87 11 месяцев назад
And favorite putters are the JOKERi, Sensei/Knife/Gui/Sea Otter (99% identical, not thrown the Sea Otter), my most favorite if it were available in premium plastics here would maybe be the Deputy, its just a little bit more comfortable than the Fierce to throw and would get to 300' i am sure.. The furthest throws are 250-280' with a downhill Electron Envy reaching +300'. I am working out what to use between the Pig and the Suspect as well, both are "4 speed putt & approach" midrange discs... Loving the feel of the R-Pro Pig but the releases on the Lucid Suspect are cleaner...

Yea this P Model S was so beefy, every throw. I'm not sure about the ESP Tour Series Fierce compared to others, I know the Fierce is typically plenty understable and the Cryztal Sparkle plastic tends to be more overstable. We threw the Jokeri in this video and it was pretty beefy as well. Didn't make the top 10.

Thx for the reply! Surprised the JOKERi were not able to be pushed out to be on the list in any round, guess it needs to glide on a substantial headwind to stay on a turn for a bit =)

Just a thought on flight numbers being "meaningless" , I take issue with that and I believe it is bad advice. I think the crux of the issue is that you can not trust the flight numbers and I believe we should push back on the manufacturer to update the flight numbers. The problem with flight numbers is two fold. First they are somewhat arbitrary and they are affected by plastic, wind, wear, arm speed, how hard you throw, etc. Second the disc manufacturers use the same set of numbers on every disc within the same mold regardless of plastic, weight, and even between runs. For example generally a destroyer has the same numbers regardless of plastid (DX / star/ champion / blizzard / glow) and this is the root of the problem, and again we need to push back of the manufacturers to post accurate numbers. Due to this lack of accuracy from the manufacturer, we end up that you do not know how a disc will fly until you throw it, and that will never change. If at all possible, it is nice to throw a disc from a friend or one you find before you buy it. I, for example, do not buy random discs, I replace ones I loose or I will throw a disc. However, the numbers are helpful and you should not completely abandon the concept. The speed and glide are the most helpful. The turn / fade not as much however there are categories, generally a 0 0 disc will fly different from a 0 4 or a -2 1 . It is like skiing where we have green/blue/black runs but these are just guidelines black meaning the most challenging at that particular ski resort. You can get a better idea of the actual flight numbers on some web sites such as infinite discs, they post numbers on the disc, as well as how they feel the disc actually flies, and people will add comments so you can get a better idea. Of course it would be best if we protest to the disc manufacturers to do better with the flight numbers they put on the disc, even it they put them on a web site rather than on the disc, and they can update the web site each run / year and maintain a database, would be trivial for them to do so. The problem with driving with putters is that the rim depth doesn't allow me to release them cleanly with any level of consistency. I'm sure this is partly a 'me' problem, but I'm not sure if I should change grip substantially to throw a putter rather than simply using a Mako or something similar that doesn't have the same problem. I have small hands and it also makes throwing high speed (>speed 9 or so) drivers difficult as well.

I do throw putters for long-ish fairway shots, and even off the tee. But I use a fan grip. I do that because I just have a harder time holding the thin rim of a putter with a power grip. Because I don't use a power grip for throwing putters, I obviously don't throw as far. But I can be quite accurate with them.

Interesting video, for me none of it applies and believe me I have tried. I am old slow and well not as slim as I used to be, the only disc I can throw well is a DX destroyer which I have thrown 1000's of times. I can throw from 0 to 300 feet perfectly straight with a little finish, regardless (mostly ) of wind, Typical for me from 150-220 ish is an average of 10 feet or so from the basket, maybe If i took the to me to learn a mid/putter I might get 5 or 8 feet average, but since I dont miss from 10.... (well very occasionally) and I putt with the destroyer too, seems to putt better (for me) maybe thats because where i play its almost always windy and the driver seems to put straighter though the often/almost always 10mph plus wind.

Hah! Too funny. Radar gun at my last tournament. Both myself and friend are >55yo and in MA2: 53mph! the MA1 friend 42yo: 63mph. Very close to what your friend saw. My question is how far should a 53mph arm be able to throw a disc? and what speed should I be throwing to get max flight? Granted, I could throw maybe a 155g Trespass Lucid (12 5 -0.5 3) and throw farther than 168g Lonestar Lariat(9 5 -1 1). So many factors play into it. Especially wind. Like your disc comparison videos. Keep on doing! Luna 3303 is not what I saw. More like 33-10.5. Not over stable for me either mister 53mph. Who does these flight numbers.
