Which UFC champion has the most 5-star victories?
It’s kind of modelled off the BoxRec website - although I do have a criteria that I’ll outline now - and overall, I’m just gonna give it a go while doing my best to be as consistent as possible.
So what is a 5-star win?
It’s a win over a great opponent with a great performance. It’s a win that comes over this opponent at a time when they are still considered to be in their prime or close enough to it.
But a 5-star-level performance over a 4-star level opponent can sometimes be enough to pull the whole score up to 5-stars.
But like a strong showing in a competitive fight against a 5-star opponent can bring the overall score up to 5-stars.

Testing out the concept with this video, but the real contest would be 'Which MMA LEGEND Has The Most 5-Star Wins?' Any interest or suggestions on either the topic or the criteria itself?

Comparing legends and recent champs would be dope. Im sure there are better past champs for some of these weight classes, and including noteworthy losses would be interesting too. Also, super excited to see what everyone featured this current roster of champs will be capable of producing in terms of fight quality down the line! Just look at Islam vs Volk yesterday, absolute banger!

I think volks victories over tkz and mendes could count as 4 stars. Mendes was still in his prime and aldo's victories over him would have easily been 5 star wins. Regarding tkz, the only reason people thought he was completely washed was because volk was so damn good. He was still putting out domimant performances against ige and edgar and very nearly beat yair. He was still a top 10 fighter when volk beat him, and absolutely wrecking a top 10 fighter the way he did is almost as impressive as scraping by a former champion

@kcsupersonic1
@kcsupersonic1 8 месяцев назад
@@TheMMAKasual He definitely wasn't washed when you consider his final fight against Holloway was actually pretty darn competitive for the first two rounds. If he didn't gamble everything to try and chase a finish in Round 3, he likely would have made it to a finish with Max Holloway that would have been more competitive than the 3rd fight between Holloway and Volk was. He wasn't washed; he just couldn't continue finding the drive to keep fighting when it became clear to him he would never become a champion. He could still probably beat lower Top 10 ranked Featherweights like Giga, Kattar, and Emmett.

Definitely do an all-time great wins vid. My money is on GSP having the most all-time: Two 5star wins against hughes, Two 5star wins against BJ, 5star wins against Fitch, Shields and Condit. Everyone he defended against is a 4star win, except maybe Hardy.
@almazingsk8er
@almazingsk8er 8 месяцев назад
I don't think it's fair to say that Fitch or Shields are just as good as Hughes/BJ were in their prime. Would not call those two 5 star wins. Condit was excellent but never held a title so I think that's a hard sell, too

I love your videos @mmadive but you're an absolute CTE tito if you don't think victories over prime Shields and prime Fitch are 5-star. see above for why Shields and Fitch literally won 8 straight in the UFC before GSP and then 5 more straight in the UFC after losing to GSP against top competition. He might have been boring, but he quite literally was the #2 welterweight in the world at that time and there is really no debate. For the record, a win against a prime Evans who was on a savage comeback run to take back the LW belt is also 5 stars. Jones didn't fight prime Pride-era Rampage who knocked out Liddell, a prime Machida, or a prime Vitor (Vitor was never 5-star quality anyway).

@DaInternetBear
@DaInternetBear 8 месяцев назад
You can’t knock back Machida, Rampage, Gus or Reyes. Machida was winning rounds against Jones before he made the read that lead to the guilly. Rampage was so powerful that Jones spent most of the fight pot shotting and avoiding getting into boxing range, meaning he had to respect Rampage and gameplan properly. Gus 1 was Jones’ second hardest career fight, with his hardest being against Reyes, who despite falling off hard was undefeated going into that title fight. Even Rashad was a really strong contender, but after Jones he fell off. You have to keep in mind where people were when Jones fought them. Reyes and Rashad only started losing consistently after they lost to him, and he fought a juiced up Vitor (although Vitor was aging, TRTitor is still insane, he blinded Bisping with a headkick)
@madmack6831
@madmack6831 8 месяцев назад
@@DaInternetBear Lmao. among other things. Machida was literally 1-2 when he fought Jones with his win being an even older Randy Couture, after the Jones fight he literally moved down a weight class because he's a natural middleweight. Rampage was a middleweight who got cut soon after the Jones fight, and even before that was losing to Rashad and barely beating Matt Hamill for a title shot. 205 was an empty division that had a lot of old names. Reyes got a winstreak from beating washed fighters because the UFC needed a contender, same as Gus. They both lost a lot when they started fighting actual 205ers
@DaInternetBear
@DaInternetBear 8 месяцев назад
@@madmack6831 I think there’s an overlap in the timeline, because people who moved from Pride like Shogun and Rampage were on their way out, but could still put on good performances. Despite when Shogun fought Jones, he was still a worthy opponent for the time. The sport has changed so much that what made someone a skilled fighter has really evolved over the years. I can’t knock back Rampage, Lyoto, or Rashad, and you can’t deny that despite the run-up to Jones being easier than most, both Gus and Reyes were extremely tough competitors, of which I still think Reyes won the fight. You can say what you want about pedigree and fall-offs, but at the time of most fighter’s careers, they’re on the up and up, or had an amazing legacy at the point they fought Jones. Shogun’s Pride run was insane, and although he didn’t match it in the UFC, beating Lyoto, arguably twice, says alot. Even though the Machida era didn’t get going, Lyoto was still a top competitor. In retrospect, Rampage was on his way out, yet Jones still adjusted his entire gameplan and developed a completely new edge to his style just to play it safe. Gus and Reyes battered Jones, and he edged them out. He beat the snot out of DC twice, and strangled Gus the second time round as well as Game. If I were to discount him on anyone, it’d be Glover (who was undefeated in the UFC before fighting Jones, and that win has aged incredibly well) who was battered for 25 minutes like Jones’ wife, Thiago Santos, and Anthony ‘Could’ve won’ Smith. You can say what you want about people fighting other top opponents and losing or falling off, but my biggest counter to that is someone like Cody Garbrandt, who was the greatest bantamweight of all time for 1 night. MMA isn’t formulaic, and the best fighters don’t always give the best performances, vice versa with mid fighters who can bust out an amazing performance

That's taking credit away for Leon by basically implying he didn't do anything different and that Usman would always beat him. That couldn't be further from the truth, the biggest difference is the fight was at sea-level rather than elevation thus making it a more fair fight as Leon didn't gas after round 1. Leon did a great job maintaining the distance picking Usman apart with kicks thus bringing the pace of the fight to one that Leon was comfortable with, and isolating the hands preventing Usman from securing his takedowns. It was a masterful performance by Leon and a masterclass in how to shut down a pressuring wrestler like Kamaru Usman.
