I love the 90’s, and was in my 20s then, I am so,glad to see some of this come back. Ani Di Franco was one and still is a favorite. The Crow was a movie we all loved, at the time, and Baz Lurhmans Romeo and Juliet. Velvets from any era can be thrifted for clothes today, and mesh was big, and clowny Mary Jane’s, yes, messy jeans with layers.

Love the throwback pictures! Goth was big while I was in high school too- 1986-1990. We were all dressing like The Cure, The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, etc. Everything old is new again. Love you S! 😺

As a fellow old person very excited about the return of this style, I just want to say, I'm so pleased to see you mention Rasputina. They've been my favourite band for like 20ish years now and they rarely ever get mentioned! Great video! :)

This comment made me tear up!! I was a little girl in the 90s and this alternative style was something that I LOVED, but of course my parents didn’t really allow me to wear what I wanted (the dark, romantic, gothic fantasy) and so coming full circle in returning to this has been so cathartic for me. I also loved Morgana from Merlin, and the elven presence in Lord of the Rings.

So as someone who actually does like the look and was intrigued that there finally came a term for this look that has been around since the 90s, I do have to give some slight criticism on a few misconceptions, specifically this whole "goth" thing. Please don't take this as an attack, merely just educating because in all fairness, this isn't the only video I've see misinformation about it's supposed tie to "goth" in. Anyway the truth of the matter is that this style has absolutely nothing to do with goth. Goth is a music-based scene that has it's own specific sound that defines it and more importantly, the look of goth traces back to the music as the style that the fans of the music dressed in was inspired by the musicians playing the music. To give a short and abridged note on goth music, bands like Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, The Mission UK, and Switchblade Symphony (circa 1995 Serpentine Gallery before they went onto dark style Trip Hop) to name a few. And from the "look" of goth, the "trad" look was created and influenced in the 80s with bands like Bauhaus, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Virgin Prunes, and Xmal Deutschland, the 90s with "romantic goth" inspired by bands like London After Midnight (specifically John Koviak), Rosetta Stone, The Shroud (Lydia Fortner), and Diva Destruction, Deahrock from bands like All Gone Dead, Scarlet's Remains, Ausgang, and Tragic Black and "Nu Goth" in the 2010s with bands like Lebanon Hanover, Ash Code, She Past Away, and Drab Majesty. I only mention the music aspect because you mentioned Rasputina and referred to them as "goth" and they really aren't. And keep this in mind, I used to LOVE Rasputina, I'm actually delighted to see that some more people out there remember them, they were so unique! Anyway yeah, Rasputina had nothing to do with the goth scene, they were just a cello rock band that utilized a dark (and ethereal) aesthetic and dark =/= goth, goth doesn't have a stranglehold on all things dark haha. (Sidenote since you mentioned Rasputina, did you ever listen to Emilie Autumn? Her "Opheliac" era was wild lol) Anyway I digress, the point I'm trying to convey here is that this whole "whimsigoth" is a misnomer with trying to tie it to goth when it has nothing to do with it and is purely based in a mix of 90s fashion with some bohemian elements. That's why those of us in the goth scene frown upon the term "whimsiGOTH" because we see the misappropriation in it and it's why we refer to it as "whimsiGOTHIC" because Goth and Gothic are not the same and it's clear that some of the look does take inspiration from the Gothic period of the 12th century what with the use of garments like peasant blouses and embroidered bustiers. All in all I hope this all made sense! But yes ,I am a big fan of the Whimsigothic and it's nice that there is a cute little term for this style after it going 2 decades without a name except for vague terms like "90s", "witchy", or "boho", now it has a specific term that helps describe it.

@--Carmen-- Год назад
This! You worded perfectly what I was thinking as well. I honestly find it a bit sad that it is called 'whimsigoth' when almost no one seems to involve goth music into it, because in my opinion it would fit the aesthetic so good! I would especially recommend anyone that likes whimsigoth to start listening to some ethereal wave, a subgenre of darkwave/goth music, since I feel like this fits the aesthetic to a T: it's gloomy, witchy, ethereal and romantic. Some great bands to start with are Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, and This Mortal Coil, and some of my other personal favourites are Lycia, Spirits of Leo, Mors Syphilitica and Trance To The Sun :)
@KaiDecadence
@KaiDecadence Год назад
@@--Carmen-- thanks, I'm glad someone sees I'm not trying to be offensive or rude, just honest. And while I don't really think this look looks "goth", I agree that with some tweaking it could lol. Also second the recommendation to trying out ethereal wave. Though with Dead Can Dance please people keep in mind that only their first album was ethereal wave, the rest of their work they moved away from Ethereal Wave and into making modern new age and classical music lol Also for Ethereal Wave, Trance to the Sun and Faith and Disease 😊
@--Carmen--
@--Carmen-- Год назад
@@KaiDecadence Noo, I don't think you came across as rude at all! I think it was very fair criticism. And yes, good disclaimer on Dead Can Dance, I was doubting on whether to add it, but didn't want to make my reply too long haha. Also, thanks for the Faith & Disease recommendation, I hadn't heard of them before, but I really enjoy them so far!
@KaiDecadence
@KaiDecadence Год назад
@@--Carmen-- Oh no problem! And yeah I just had to add that addentum to Dead Can Dance because I've seen so many people think that ALL of their music is Ethereal Wave when the reality is that only their first album was haha. And sure thing, Faith & Disease are pretty underrated in the goth genre
