Really interesting info, Linn! Thanks!!! 😃 I've heard about Oak here in Brazil, so it also exists here... But I never saw a single tree. But I have some pieces, I guess it was flooring... That they threw out during a construction nearby. Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Hi, one fun item for your scrapbook chestnuts come in two varieties, sweet chestnuts can be eaten but normal chestnuts are poisonous, but if you hang them in your wardrobes (if anyone has wardrobes) they keep moths away from your clothes

Also useful to remember that in Winter, there will be thousands of leaves on the ground around the tree to help with identification - interesting video, thanks. Here in the UK we don't have Red Oak (except a few specimin trees).

I do enjoy listening to your videos. When it comes to acorns in the UK I though you might be interested to know about pannage. Quote.... What is Pannage? Or Common Mast? The practice of allowing Commoners to free their domestic pigs to roam the New Forest is called Pannage. Pannage is also named Common Mast. Pannage takes place every September when acorns and other nuts fall from the trees. The pigs will scour the forest to eat up all the acorns and nuts to unknowingly help the ponies and other cattle, in which these “pig treats” would be poisonous....... I really love the white oak. A change from all the traditional brown coloured oak I grew up with. Think churches and such. Many thanks Linn.

I love this video Linn. Thanks. It’s lovely to see those old projects again, those leather and wood boxes were so cool to watch and inspiring to get me creative in my own workshop. And who doesn’t love a bit of tree id help thrown in?

White oak is and has been my favorite wood for decades. As we remember that white oak was used in building the Spanish Armada fleet of 300 ships and thus severely hampered the stock of white oak in Europe for a long time. Some older houses with stairs had been of red oak and this older oak a hundred years ago had a much tighter grain than the red oak of today. The white oak is a denser wood and in the mid northern states of the US white oak is not as common and priced higher at the mills. There is quarter sawn red oak on the market but harder to find. Schools some hundred years ago used mostly red oak for the furniture and desks along with churches that used red oak.

Cool Linn! I use white oak frequently myself. A cool thing I have done is use the vinegar and steel wool mixture stain on the white oak. It really has a cool look, and it really turns super black because of the high tannin in white oak. and all natural! If you have not heard of the mixture of vinegar and steel wool before, It works on other woods as well, but the higher the tannin in the wood, the darker it becomes...

One good use for acorns: feed them to your pig. I've heard that's what the Italians do. Pigs also love walnuts and chestnuts.

This is so weird! I had a dream just this morning that I steamed a large 4x4 oak post and was twisting into a decorative piece. It was very specifically oak and it was like working with taffy. But sorry, I don’t know if it was white or red oak! 😆😆

That's so interesting! I was born in the 1970s and now prefer white oak. However, one of my best friends, a very prominent designer in a posh affluent neighborhood said red oak is making a comeback, and her new generation clients are choosing red oak over white oak the majority of the time in her design options.

You were talking about the smell of the wood. There are a lot more chemical substances in the wood that you would imagine. If you heat a piece of wood a lot of different vapors come out of it. Not so much connected to woodworking, that is unless you are Jason, but bourbon is ages in new white oak barrels and half or more of the unique flavors contained in bourbon come from the wood, not from the grain that the bourbon is made from. So it would be logical that the wood itself could have some complex fragrances.

The younger replacement oak population in the USA is not large enough to replace the mature oak population so we are heading into a period of oak forest loss. So plant white and red oaks wherever you can to help. Check the species for your area with an arborist. I try to use trees from my area so I propagate local DNA. Also when you dig out an oak tree, they have a deep tap root that you should try to dig out intact. It’s how oak trees survive drought and live 300 years. You want a healthy tree for centuries. And give them room.
