I was overdue to do some ski touring this winter. I have wanted to check-out the Nordic Center at White Pass for quite some time, so I decided on a mid-week trip to avoid the crowds. There was light snow when I started, but it gave way to party sunny skies with intermittent clouds. I stopped at a summer horse camp for some coffee - using my Trangia Spirit Burner and Trangia Triangle Stove.
Skis - Asnes Gamme 54
Ski Bindings - Rottefella NNN BC Magnum
Ski Boots - Alpina Alaska
I only got one photo today, but it was still an amazing day to be out.

Beautiful area, Tim. What park system or forest were you skiing in? You’re blessed to have this near you. Our winter here in NE Ohio has been on record one of the most boring (mostly snow free) in years. We haven’t been on the XC skis in weeks. Just 18% grey, like the old Kodak grey scale cards one used to carry in the film days.

Thanks Edwin. Even here in WA, the snow levels are higher than normal. The pass where I was has a decent amount of coverage, but there is a hard crust about 1 foot down - formed from rain and warmer weather from a couple weeks ago.

Great video, Tim. I was hoping to do a little Ski trip this winter, but sadly I can't leave the UK right now. It was nice to hear you talk about the benefits of alcohol stoves. This is the route I have gone down for my camper van. Keep up the good work 👍

Thanks man! I hope you are well. I haven't done any Alpine skiing this year - as all of the resorts have a pre-paid reservation system that is limited in number to control distancing and the number of people. I thought you may recognize the location! Alcohol stoves are a recent discovery for me. I also have a Trangia cookset that I plan to use for more "robust" meal prep in the backcountry while hiking (short trip).

Do you have to worry about bears out there?
@TimKirkPhotos

I have encountered many bears while out - but always in the summer. Bears "mostly" hibernate in the winter but it could be possible to see one in any season. In the cascades, we really only have black bears and they are very shy and timid... if they see you, they will move in the opposite direction. The only time that would be an issue with black bears if one found themselves between a mother bear and her cubs... then need to be very careful.

I'm more afraid of elk -- they've chased after me a number of times, once for more than a mile...

Here in SC, we may get an inch or two of snow every couple of years so please excuse the dumb question but in that kind of area, how does one decide on using CC skis or snowshoes to travel? I've seen you do both and was curious. It looked as if the skis were much faster.

Phil - the skis are much faster. It really depends on the terrain and what I have with me. If I have a pulk and lots of gear, and the terrain is steeper, then skis aren't really practical. Some areas are also limited with lots of trees and narrow trails - I would also go for snowshoes there too. Skis are definitely the better option if the terrain, conditions, and load allow for it. By the way, I lived in Columbia, SC for one year.

@@TimKirkPhotos Wow, I'm so sorry about that. Seriously though, big change from the July-August in Columbia and the climate where you are. I'm in the upstate at the foot of the mountains and it get miserable here in summer. Columbia is even worse. Thanks Tom. Again, I love your videos.
