She actually changed a lot but it was so elegant, so in proportion with the original, that you don't really notice it. It's a masterpiece of arrangement and obviously her performance was beyond everything.

FUN FACT: Whitney took along her friend to Tampa. After singing, they were headed right back out. All she packed was a black cocktail dress, heels, earrings, and some hair pins to put up her hair. It was unseasonably cold in Tampa that night. Whitney said she’d freeze in the dress she brought. Her friend said, “Why don’t you just wear the track suit you have on?” Whitney looked at her friend like she was crazy. Her friend then told her she was serious. The track suit looked patriotic, and would be perfect. While Whitney freshened up, her friend ran down to the gift shop and bought the white bandana she has in her hair.

He also said that she sang to a pre-recorded version of the song. Was she standing out there actually singing out loud? Yes. Was the microphone turned on to transmit her voice to the stadium? No. I'm not sure how Ricky Minor can claim she heard it once and also recorded it, and then sang it for millions and millions of people. It just doesn't sound right from a musical and technological perspective. My guess is this: Ricky Minor is talking about Houston picking the arrangement after hearing it once; not that she heard it once, recorded it once, then sang it once.

She even came up with the arrangement for her and Mariah’s when you believe duet during rehearsal of the 1999 oscars. Whitney even recorded im your baby tonight in one take. She was known in the industry as one take houston

I was a Super Bowl party when this originally aired. Bunch of guys, at that moment, playing poker, some smoking cigars and everyone talking because I was the ONLY Whitney Houston fan ... But when this started, the entire room got completely silent and I saw some big, burly "macho" men start to cry. I wasonly 19 years old at the time and less than a month away before I would enter boot camp for the US Navy. You know you knocked it out of the stadium when you are the one and ONLY artist to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, not once but TWICE (it originally peaked at #20 after this performance & it was re-released after 9-11 and then peaked at #6). It still gives me chills 31 years later!

Ms. Whitney Houston lived in the next town over from me ! She and her husband Bobby Brown would come to the diner in town and people would line up and get her autograph ! One time my friend was making a sandwich in the local food store and she came in and asked what kind of sandwich he was making? he said a tuna on rye! so she made one ! He noticed when she left that she was driving a late model car! there were no body guards ! I was told she wanted to get out by her self! She was so kind and Beautiful and people Loved her! she was buried in Fairview Cemetery, in Westfield, New Jersey, next to her father, John Russell Houston, who died in 2003. She was only 48 years old "rest in peace"

Yes read the same thing. She came in listened through headphones of the arrangement said ok I got it. Rehearsed it once and it was go time. Same with I will always love you btw. Also the NFL didnt like her version and tried to stop her and chage it to be more traditional. Well Whitney won that battle ..history was made. RIP Whitney 10years gone yesterday

Most patriotic moment I can recall in my 63 years. Not many acknowledge that was an amazing orchestral arrangement, which Whitney & her exceptional musicianship caressed with dynamic grace & power. Thankful for the extraordinary gift she clearly was, & so beautiful! Her broken heart took her way soon. Hoping she’s in the resting place with her Lord. I read she practiced it once and done. She slowed the tempo and the NFL wanted her to change it because they thought it was too slow for people in the stands to sing along. Her dad, her manager, said no!

Whitney Houston is arguably the best to have ever done it, but a huge part of why this is so memorable is the arrangement. John Clayton reharmonized a lot of the big moments and made them so much more poignant than the original. He does it all over the place, but the best parts are the chords under "rockets red glare" to "proof through the night". It feels like it's providing deeper emotional context to the words.

Something that a lot of white Americans forget is that Black people are some of the most patriotic people you’ll ever meet. We have to be to not give up in a country whose constitution considered us to be 3/5 of a person. We have fought in every US war for rights that we ourselves did not have. The goosebumps that people felt was all the love that Whitney had for her country poured out and that anthem. It’s so symbolic of how so many African-Americans feel. People forget that just because we’re trying to form a more perfect union doesn’t mean that we are not in love with a place that is the only home we know. We may identify with “Africa“ but we don’t know where we’re from. For most of us all we know, is these United States of America. We’re not going anywhere.

I can appreciate the happy reminiscing, but saying we were actually "together" back then? It was 1991, most differing voices/opinions simply didn't have any outlets to voice their views. Today, anyone with a phone and an internet connection can challenge the status quo. That's why it "seemed" we were together. That said, I don't want to undo any positivity you're getting from your memories or performance. Besides, there are still flyovers at football games. So, USA!
