He always seemed insecure though, even when he had most things handed to him by his adopted father, he never trusted him, even when his stepfather attempted to just talk to him, would always be received with bitterness and hostility. I get the guy was a tyrant, but he wasn't one to Peter Tuberculosis. Also, though his step daddy did see Peter as a resource, it was vice versa. Peter Thompson also used him as a resource for his intellectual pursuits.
Im not fan of retcons, but i hope they will retcon him becoming demon prince. also his quotes to Angron ‘Your strength flees,’ roared Perturabo. ‘It does not belong to you. It is your master’s, and the chain that keeps you throttles you. The threads of blood are thinning. The meal of slaughter will only keep you here long enough to see your bastard sons die.’ He hates Chaos and slavery to it.
I agree, however his problem was with being enslaved by a chaos god. If he were somehow able to turn him self into a Daemon Prince through warp fuckery then I think it'd be pretty sick. I don't know how he'd do it but I think that the process involves removing part of your soul and replacing it with warp energy and there is warp energy that isn't connected to the chaos gods.
He isnt tho thats been established chaos undevided leagions are not enslaved to any the gods And the iron warriors are the only legion that have many obliterators join and obliterators refuse to be loyal to any soecific god infact the first obliterator was a demon that possessed a iron warrior that demon was a korn demon that had escaped korns control The iron warriors are not enslaved to the chaos gods They just use chaos as a hide out

This is, what most miss is that Pert was born as smart as he ever would be. He knew everything. At a glance. He outpaced everyone. As a child. He never knew what wonder was. He didn’t “discover.” Anything. He already knew how to deconstruct everything. He was so hyper aware he figured out he was constructed, not born. He felt The Warp looking at him. Always. He didn’t “get” friendship. He didn’t “get” social skills. There was only use and benefit. That was and still was the frame by which he saw life. It’s like if you tell a kid he’s dumb over and over again and he knows damn well he’s not but he realizes you’re not gonna stop telling him he is so he just accepts it and hates your guts the entire way because of it. Because he knows what he wants to do but he also knows you won’t ever let him do it. So the hate grows into Iron.
That last bit about about calling a child dumb and growing hateful suddenly makes me realize why I like the iron warriors so much, didn’t get called dumb but did get told I’d never amount to much. Told the last teacher who told me that “hey at least I won’t end up a high school teacher then” didn’t even do what she thought I did, turns out it was my best friend who passed the other week.
I wonder, what do you think about the possibility of their redemption? As far as Traitor legions go, they did sort of help the Imperium once during the War of the Beast, I think...
@@totalnerd5674 I know next to nothing about the War of the Beast so can't tell you much there. As far as the Iron Warriors themselves go, it would never happen both in and out of universe. They are far to bitter and stubborn to ever turn coat back to the Imperium and the Imperium would never take them back. If they did though, with Perturabo, the Imperium would have one of it's greatest legions and most intelligent Primarchs return. With all the knowledge he has on technology, as well as how to mass produce Astartes, he'd be able to stop the technological decay the Imperium suffers, and be able to drastically increase the number of Astartes throughout the galaxy. His legion having access to untainted geneseed from Terras gene vaults would mean they can begin mass producing Iron Warriors, pure blooded ones might I add. The IVth Legion was amongst the strongest of all the legions, with their return the Imperium would be far stronger. I am biased of course.
I love that little part in the lore when during the heresy while every one was gearing up to assault terra, Peter turbo was sent to drag angron back to the war and when he found him and the world eater he beat their asses like he first order a bombing on the world eaters then sent his troops in with shields and guns plus hammer to deny them blood while also beat angron with his hammer while saying “ you started as a slave and a slave you will always remain” not accurate quote but pretty close.
@@dominicmarazita8103 I'm a little late, but I think he just meant that quote wasn't word for word with what was actually written in the book (basically he was just saying he's paraphrasing)

@@TheBoneZone40k they've said he s a daemon prince , but that's never set well with me..but there's a strong argument to be made that the Primarchs are all effectively non aligned daemon princes shoved inside of alchemical superman bodies.
Pertaurabo is the epitome of work smarter not harder. Except he swapped smarter and harder. He is honestly his own worst enemy and put his faith in a group that used him, Horus not the Emperor. He never bothered to talk to the Big E. He just assumed all that came from Horus was from Big E. However as he learned when they were losing that he was the only competent one in the heresy. To think, if he just aired his grievances to Malcador or the Emperor something would of been done.
@@iloveplayingpr having royal door and Peter turbo being your enemy in a siege sounds like a true nightmare. The death guard wouldn’t even put up with that.
As much as the White Scars are my favorite legion/chapter, the Iron Warriors are the ones to whom I relate the most. They're monsters born out of misunderstanding, under-appreciation, and dehumanization. It doesn't excuse their actions, but you sure feel sorry for them after seeing all that they went through.
Absolutely why I love him. He seems the most genuinely humanely flawed and more relatable because of it. But going alittle deeper with this, it’s also an allegory on the effects of proper parenting, nurturing and upbringing. Peturabo is Dorns dark mirror in more than just legion tactics. Even their development stories are the same. Dorn lands on a planet and is adopted by its ruler. He grows up being heralded and praised by his father and the planets people. This remains the same for after being found by the emperor and entering the crusade. Peturabo is found by a planets ruler and immediately him and the rest of the planet think how can we make use of this thing. He makes them beautiful works of art and they denigrate him for not using his talents to make engines of war. He finally gives up and becomes his fathers attack dog. And once again after being found by the emperor and joining the crusade as much as he hoped things would be different found out they much the same again. So these two rivals when you look at it are an example of the nature/nurture we saw in people in the real world. You can put the same child prodigy in different environments with different upbringings and see very different results. On one hand with a nurturing family and an Ivey league school you get a Genius and in the broken and abusive home you get Edmund Kemper. Wow. Now that I say that there are a lot of parallels between Perty and Kemper..
@@samhain409and remember, your first known memory is climbing up a cliff and then staring into the eye of terror, then finding out no one you ask knows about it. You've also unlocked your primarch knowledge from the start and basically cannot fail. Have fun learning to take criticism.
Perturabo is my favorite Primarch, so I've done a good amount of reading and re-reading of their lore. I think it's difficult to separate Perturabo's reputation from the reality of his behavior. He didn't get along well with his brothers and was only close with one of them, insofar as I can tell. So I think there were a lot of whispers behind his back. Also, the Iron Warriors fought in a very different great Crusade than his brothers did. He intentionally took on the most difficult endeavors. So the casualties the Iron Warriors sustained might not be comparable with what was happening in other Legions. I think everyone; Perturabo, his brothers, the Emperor, everyone, assumed the Lord of Iron was unbreakable. But in fact he was far more susceptible to mental health issues than anyone would've thought, much of which was suffered before the Emperor ever landed on Olympia. I think Perturabo was traumatized by the Great Crusade, especially with the Hrud, and he just snapped. There was no room in his worldview for getting help. And that's really tragic. I think if he'd had some time with Sanguinius, Perturabo might well have been redeemed.
Yeah! I find it's too reductionist to simply say "himb bitter" everything I read about Perturabo is very much around him doing too much to try and prove his worth to others, rather than just prove his worth to himself Someone in the comments said "perty chose to work harder not smarter" and they weren't wrong.
@@TheBoneZone40k I think Perturabo is a cautionary tale about the external locus of control. It's dangerous to care so much about how others see you. Plus there's that loomimg Eye of Terror in the sky. How can you stay sane with that thimg up there, especially if you tell no one?! In the end it's fiction written really subjectively, right? I have a theory that Perturabo had a pretty good relationship with Vulkan at some point in the Great Crusade, but fell out with him for some reason that might have had to do with some unwavering commitment he had.
I've always felt Perty was the most sympathetic of the traitors. He didn't stand a chance. He's the neurodivergent creative kid that just wants to sit in the corner and make stuff. And he just went through shit constantly.

2:40 The word 'Tyrant' was originally not meant to be pejorative. In ancient Greece, it just meant someone who came to power by unconventional means. You could see them as a despot, but it wasn't meant to be a slur. Over the course of Greek and Roman history it eventually developed that meaning, however.
I believe that in Greece it was meant to be someone who gained power illegally, but in many cases tyrants were seen as heroes by the people (could be confusing with the ancient definition of "Dictator")
@totalNERD you know it's funny, I just looked up the history and yours is a lot closer to it. It was originally somebody who gains power by unconventional means and had nothing to do with ethics. This part I had mostly correct. However, I was conflating it with the overthrow of the Roman monarchy, that's what I got wrong.
And his second power eas his tech knolledge he could make perfect things but too perfect he crafter the perfect sculpture but it was so design perfect that it lacked creativity and beauty its perfect nit in beauty but in eficient build he also could repair and build machines that he should have no knolledge of
Iron Warriors ARE loyal. The emperor commanded to follow Horus as if they followed him. The Emperor didn't have the foresight to see what his decree would make. Iron within, Iron without.
Loyal to the imperiam not to the emperor porturabo honestly made his first ever real laps in judgment believeing horus would be better than the emperor porturabo believed horusnti be the mist honourable man he met thats why he followed him he also blames chaos for horus turning insane before his death one reason he dislikes the chaos gods
Bear in mind, Peter Turbo was very adamant about refusing the terms “Loyalist” and “Traitor;” to him, you were either a winner, or a loser. To do otherwise was not only illogical, but kind of insulting
Perturabo, just like Curze and Mortarion, is one of those Primarchs that really had the biggest seed for greatness in them. With his genius and effectiveness he could have solved many problems of the imperium, if given the proper guidance and freedom by the Emperor.
even if he just hung out with guimliman for a bit an dlistened or talked shop (supplies) then i think Perturabo would have been much better off for it.
The HH series seems to bounce around different versions on him depending on the writer. But one thing is for certain: He's my little maldy boy, and I love him.
But I will die on the hill that him decimating his legion upon meeting them for the first time is one of the STUPIDEST things ever written into the 40K lore.
I always see people debate on the idea of Perturabo being a daemon. I always had this theory that the chaos gods did it as their equivalent of a really cruel joke. He's (not by choice) chaos undivided, so good luck on all of them getting together to make him do something; However, them turning him into a daemon would make sense as people forget the chaos gods don't care about anyone (outside of Nurgle in a caring but sadistic fashion) and see the traitor primarchs as their playthings and anyone beneath them usually as cannon fodder and food. Angron was transformed against his will by Khorne and Lorgar. Fulgrim was corrupted by possession and was too broken when he got his body and mind back to be blamed. Magnus was tricked by Tzeentch. Mortarion was forced after hours of suffering in Nurgle's Garden to accept his fate. Lorgar is really the only one who chose to be a daemon prince of his own 100% free will.
Mortarion had to watch his sons basically melt and explode into a bunch of Bloat flies as big as a human thigh. And he couldn’t do anything about it. He was also afflicted with it but couldn’t die since his primarch powers kept him alive.
Fun fact, that whole, 1/10th of the soldiers having to draw a chance to be beaten to death by their fellow astartes was actually a real punishment used by Generals in ancient Rome. It was called decimation. Roman legions who failed would have to draw straws and whoever drew the short straw would be beaten to death by their fellow soldiers. I believe Crassus, Julius Caesar and Marc Antony all enacted decimation to their legions at one point or another.
It would have been worth mentioning his love of architecture and building. He had great plans to build wonderful things after the crusade, but he was depressed because people only even saw him as a weapon, a destroyer. Source: Angel Exterminatous
I both love and hate Perturabo. I think the line "the lie of a higher purpose" really encapsulates him he really wanted his legion and the things he built to be more than just war machines. that moment in angel exterminatus when fulgrim and perturabo walk through perturabos wildest dreams was sad
I kind of like the idea of him being somewhere between him making badass armor and the demon thing. Like he ascended to demonhood and forged this badass suit of armor making him the Iron Demon .
Want some help with the historical references? Historically speaking the word tyrant was just the word used to describe a Greek king in the early days Greece. And the death lottery is a roman military practice called decimation (literally meaning harming 1/10 in Latin.) It works similarly to how you described, if the army failed particularly badly 1 in 10 were picked randomly selected. However instead of killing them the other 9 would beat the 1 with sticks and then at night the 10% who got unlucky had to sleep outside the camp. Eventually roomers turned this into killing the 10%. (personally I prefer the dreadnought primarch angle because it's more badass and I'm not a fan of chaos.)
honestly my main intro to the Iron Warriors post heresy was the book Storm of Iron. Damn bro the way the IW found out the range and accuracy of the Imperial defenders guns is pretty horrific, so what the IW did was they had recently taken a space port and had taken a few thousand prisoners, imperial guard mostly, and then the IW sent the POW's out into the enemy fortifications where most of them died and the few who scrambled back were gunned down by the IW including a not quite yet Warsmith Honsu. The Imperial gunners were then shown celebrating the fact that they had just thrown off the first wave of the enemy attack until someine saw that the IW were gunning the attackers down then the gunner (who had made a game of killing the POW's and had won said game) realized that they were the prisoners from the space port. Honestly this entire moment was a big win for the IW they got rid of the need to keep unnecessary prisoners who could be in a position to cause chaos in the IW camp and rebel, they learned about the enemies firing patterns, range and accuracy of the IG guns. To rub further salt in the wound the IW dealt blows to the IG morale and bought more time for the main IW forces to fortify the space port and bring in the big guns of chaos.
12:24 "They might be really good at what they are doing but they are definitely not enjoying it" is by far the best way to describe the Iron Warriors in a nutshell i have ever seen.
Paranoia and fear was what truly damned Perturabo. He refused genuine attempts by his adopted family, legion and brothers to bond because he feared being used. He feared mockery and being seen as weak so he never voiced his displeasure at how his legion was treated. He feared being judged so he never shared his passions or opinions. And he mainly joined Horus because he feared that the emperor would judge him for destroying his world.
14:00 tbf Big E also picked Dorn as the builder and defender so Perty blew 18 holes into the palace and left because he dislikes the batshit insane crew he was with and Perty wanting some praise and respect but yeah he went a bit off the walls but is definitely gray.
Honestly, I only recently discovered your channel but you’re honestly one of my favorite Lore Channels right now to be honest, and I mean that Keep up the great work bud!
I always liked how they portray Perty as an inventor and architect. He made the labyrinth for Curze to trap Vulkan in. He designed the chamber for the council of nikea.(which he hated what it was used for and then destroyed.) And a lot of other little things. He just wanted to be recognized and appreciated. But he just felt used.
I've always felt the iron warriors' indifference to life was really the big thing that made them who they are and explained best why they do the things they do. They're the coldest ones ever to do it
Didn't read about Perturabo yet, but from what you are describing, it was a roman-style decimation. Afaik, it was historical, where once a legion messed up bad enough, it was split into groups of ten, and every tenth man, picked by shortest straw, was executed by his 9 "squad-mates".
Barban Falk from Angel exterminatus is still around as a Daemon Prince of undivided in 40k from Graham McNeils " Storm of Iron" where he ascended. Idryss Krendl who battles Dantioch is also still around in 40k in the novel: Skitarius
While yes, perturabo had a bad start, suede has both a massive martyr and victim complex, despite being one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy. I get that the emperor is a bad dad, but the primarchs had just as much of a part in their own downfalls as big E did. He’s also just a massive asshole. I’m not saying he not competent, the fact that he is is part of what makes him a good character. But we should recognize that he is in a hell of his own creation( mostly). Like he and mortarion hates the warp yet joins the faction with literal Desmond as Allie’s. Boy what did you expect
I’d just add that yes, many Iron Warriors do have quick praises to the dark gods before charging, many do worship the chaos gods and many do try to become daemon princes and receive and keep their chaos gifts, even if most don’t it’s still pretty common among most warbands (like with the Night Lords, where some warbands may have no taint and others where practically every squad has a worshiper or someone tainted)
I thought Peter Turbo's actual power is that he can look at something and see how it fails, and from that he knows how it works; and that's how he's the siege master? Him knowing how to build things is only what he advertises as.
It’s a bit of both it was pretty much implied he is walking stc when it comes to knowledge he is the smartest prim arch also he knows how to create tech he shouldn’t know how to make like that time he made magnus a warp power enhancer or his automatons with forbidden AI
Third peter turbo video essay I've listened to and this one wildly diverged from the other 2. Also, the lottery is called a decimation. It is a punishment that reduces the force by a tenth. Yes, by beating to death ones peers.
The book "Storm of Iron" details the members of Perturabo's Trident (from AE onwards), namely Forrix and Kroeger with Honsou as line-captains, led by Barban Falk aka "The Warsmith". Falk ends up ascending to Daemonhood, so he's still kicking around in that sense. The rest of them end up dying in the book of course.
Peter, kinda cooler to me now. I'm very surface level with 40k. Hearing he got out of one situation that was a shit sandwich, just into another that was practically the same thing. That sucks man. Feeling stuck sucks ass.Hell yeah I'd be looking for an out even if that meant betrayal. Very compelling character.
They think of accepting Chaos as weakness, and try to conduct warfare "honourably" - which basically seems to mean no warp shenanigans or sabotage foul-play in 40k.
As far as my knowledge goes on their hatred of Chaos, it stems from how they saw it effect the other traitor legions. They saw how it by and large ruined them all both Astartes and their Primarchs (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gf5203Y7Zwo.html) the III'rd is a great example. At the start of the Heresy the legions all followed Horus but by the end due to the corruption numerous legions were running off to do other things. The Iron Warriors saw how they lost so much discipline and saw such corruption to the Ruinous Powers as weakness. Perturabo saw how it changed Horus from being as he called him "the only honorable man in the galaxy" to going borderline insane and taking away his lead command position during the Siege of Terra and giving it to Mortarian who was now a demon prince. He also got his soul wound from Fulgrim ascending to a demon prince. He later came across Sons of Horus who gave into Nurgle and told him he wouldn't be able to defeat demon prince Angron without Nurgles help (they died very fast) and he then went on to defeating Angron and his legion, despite Angron being a demon prince and himself growing ever weaker from his soul wound. I know I missed some stuff but that's by and large what I know.
Which exsolains why he was perfectly fine bring8ng the first obliterator into his legion and alowing his legion to turn parts of their group into obliterators
Their tactics are more closer to that of the Astra militarum from how it’s described just more effective cause it’s space marines and not regular people
I like the idea of him using daemonic technology to extend his life and the main reaosn why people in lore thinks his a daemon prince is because all these wires and mechanical bits sticking out and the less then human look makes him look like a daemon
In case no one mentioned it, tyrant in the Greek context is just a ruler that came to power either illegitimately or one from outside a hereditary lineage. Tyrant kinda evolved because of its definition in common history occurring for usurpers and traitors hence the inherent bad connotations
Actually a handful of his warriors are still active 10k years since the heresy. Forrix, Kroger and Folk (just referred to as the war smith). No coincidence that they where the only 3 remotely likeable Iron warriors from the heresy. They were part of Honsus storyline
If you feel bad for purterabo just wait till you get to magnus who joined chaos because of the fuck ups he did for trying to do the right thing or the tradgic life of angron who was screwed over since day 1 because of eldar fuckery
5:55 decimation (from Latin decimatio 'removal of a tenth' ) was a form of military discipline in which every tenth man in a group was executed by members of his cohort. Makes sense PeterTurbo from the Greek-Roman planet would like it.
With the introduction of Vashtorr i wouldn't mind a small retcon to make Peter Turbo his first daemon prince. I kinda wish GW would just make vashtorr the 5th God and make the Iron warriors his chosen legion.
The Iron Warriors afaik, reject chaos boons because gods are cringe. After seeing directly what these "boons" were doing to their allies during the heresy, it's not a big leap that they'd reject them outright. Peter Turbo and the Iron Warriors had to hard carry the siege of Terra while their allies were just dicking around not getting anything done. "Oh wow, chaos is turning my allies into either dust trapped inside tin cans, rotting, bloated walking-dead guys, mindless ragers, or warp-dust addicted maniacs. Fuck this shit, I'm out."
Perturabo is more interesting as working alongside Vashtorr. He is plain spoken, he doesn't lie, and he has total dominion over machinery. He wouldn't corrupt any of his troops and would be more than happy to simply craft weapons and armor and equipment with him
In ancient Greece, it was quite common for dictators/ kings to be referred to as tyrants (ex. Dionysius I the tyrant of Syracuse) they were not necessarily tyrannical, but many were hence where we get the word from. So as Olympia was Greek-inspired hence why they were tyrants. The more you know meme insert here.
In Greek Tyrant literally started out as a generic term for a ruler. It wasn't until Tyrants displayed those tyrannical behaviors that the word became what it is today.
I never saw him turning into a demon. Someone that smart that was aware of the warp since birth would/should know how their power chains you. He was very independent & didn't want to be chained up. The suit and helmet/mask kicks ass but him being a demon definitely doesn't. Also, out of all chaos I would hate to be captured by him. You know your life is going to just be a slave for the rest of your life and only be fed enough to survive.
I really really really really really really REALLY want him and his legion to come back and have more updated models and rules in 40k, especially with a minor chaos god like cashtor floating around tell me that dude isn't PERFECT for the mind of perturabo ALSO, i like chaos obliterators, and chaos perty was always described as a GIANT Daemon Obliterator which just sounds so fucking cool to me.
Perturabo is a lesson of the importance of speaking up for ur self. If you never let other know what u want or what ur not comfortable with they will carry on on the assumption that you agree. The iron warriors as a legion were reliable too reliable their gene seed was stable their tactics and organization practical and strait forwards and the fact that they hadn’t discovered their Primarch yet meant they were perfect legion to use by Imperial high command grueling sieges garrison duty. Instead of decimatioing his legion perty should have stood up for his sons told the emperor the 4th will no longer be the tools for imperial high command and perturabo should taken time to actually do the things he enjoyed building for every world the iron warriors would have just left in ruins they take the to build them back up.
I feel like the iron warriors are one of the only factions in 40k that understand the reality of the universe: "in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war". They recognize the point that life is meaning- and valueless, which is a point of discussion in our reality, but is unquestionably true in 40k. And because there is only war, you have to become the best at war, and to become the best at war you have to play by the rules of the universe and they say not the one who fought with principles or gambled on outside factors wins, but the one last standing
Yeah Emps would definetely want to say some horrible shit after Perty brutally pacificated his world that revolted. Probably things like "good job" or "im proud that you are so dedicated"
BTW, utilitarian does not mean lack of empathy or pure pragmatism here is the definition: *In ethical philosophy, utilitarianism is a family of normative ethical theories that prescribe actions that maximize happiness and well-being for the affected individuals. In other words, utilitarian ideas encourage actions that ensure the greatest good for the greatest number.*
I belive you missed some points about his character, he started extremly well with his father and even some of his brothers as well as cared about human life a lot. Hell basically everything he did he did because he either belived or lied to himself that the logical order is 1) be strong 2) make peace trough war if necesary 3) build up the whole galaxy to be full with nice stuff prospering planets etc. He even says that he wants to serv the last honourable person in the galaxy aka Horus. Perty is bitter is stoic is unfulfilled but he 100% cared for human costs just usually not the ones who directly served under him or fought him. I've listened to a conversation between Magnus and him while they were evacuating a planet. Magnus wanted to send some of his men to get to some anciest toombs to look for artifacts or whatever and one of his generals argued that the people who dont want to leave their homes should be left behind. Puertorabo had the best answer: "i will not leave them behind for the same reason as i would not let a child play on a mountain cliff" showing clearly he cares about people's suffering. Hell he even educates some of his warsmiths and genuenly tries to make people understand his way of thinking. I think puertorabo would have been best fit as a teacher, firm strict but doing his best to educate
I think Pertarabo becoming a demon prince was actually a punishment from Chaos rather than a gift like with Belekor. Pertarabo and his sons refuse chaos, despite their utilization if it. It’s a tool for them, a phenomenon that can be controlled once understood. Despite his efforts furthering chaos across the Galaxy, he still seeks to put mankind at the head of all existence. The Chaos Gods would hate being usurped by their playthings, and if Perty got his way, that’s exactly what would happen. Unless the gods made Perty forever linked to their own existence, and therefore no matter what, chaos would reign. Even if Perty elevated mankind to the rulers of the galaxy, doing so would destroy him completely, and Perty would not be able to stand being unable to manage his empire. The chaos gods also knew Perty would never bend the knee to just one of them, so it would require all of them to elevate someone as unwilling and as powerful as the Lord of Iron.
