Magic: The Gathering is mixing with Dungeons and Dragons in their first cross over set, D&D: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. Spoilers are here!
Beholders are some of the most iconic monsters from Dungeon and Dragons 5th edition, the Forgotten Realms. Now making an appearance in Magic: The Gathering, these strange 1 eyed monsters are set to terrorize your Commander games. In MTG Adventures in the Forgotten realms, we are introduced to the Legendary Beholder, Xanathar. Known as the Guild Kingpin, Xanathar is a syndicate crime lord who went from a slaver to leading the largest organization in Skullport. Located beneath the popular Waterdeep, Xanathar and his thugs control every nefarious act. But who is Xanathar? How did they rise to prominence?

Man you should do a whole video on just beholders, they are pretty nuts. I am sure some MTG players don’t know their deep lore. I am personally a fan of how they create more beholders.

The problem is he would have to do lore on ALL beholders and their archetypes since 5E (ironically Zanathar guide I believe) increased the amount of them. I will say out of allthing in D&D Beholders are really the most unique creatures.

A fun thing you didn't mention here: The reason your opponent can't cast spells while Xanathar is there is because he's looking at your opponent. A beholder's main eye constantly puts out an anti-magic field up to (iirc) 120ft. I think it's neat that's reflected in the card.

It's not constantly, they can close it to cast their own spells whereever they want

I was sad that sylgar didn't get his own card. So I ideated his card: Sylgar, beloved pet Mana value 0 U color identity Legendary creature-fish uncommon 0/1 You may have any number of cards named sylgar, beloved pet in your deck. When it dies, you may look your hand and library for a card called sylgar, beloved pet and put it on the top of the library. As long xanathar, guild kingpin is not on the battlefield, sylgar, beloved pet is not Legendary

I've never played a D&D game in Waterdeep but Neverwinter Nights has a high level adventure set in Undermountain, which leads into the Underdark where I've laid many a beholder to rest

Recommendation do not have Xander as a boss have him as a balance in waterdeep or even make him a high lord for shits and giggles because I could imagine people on the council absolutely hating listening to a beholder XD

What ever happened to the lore behind each set? The story's with the gate watch and the planes walkers???? I looked in the play lists and theres been nothing about any of them for along time. It ended with Garruk being that elf guys dog and since then NOTHING. What happened to the actual LORE of this channel?

More like what’s happened to the lore of MTG. Make no mistake, a lot has changed on WOTC side. Stories are one shot, one off, adventures. The Gatewatch have been mentioned in a long time

There are demons in Doom games that are reminiscent of beholders. With a little imagination you can crossover with no problem ))

@@grim_2000 yup. Wotc allegedly threatened to sue over it (beholders are one of the few proprietary monsters in DND) but Gygax squashed that by saying he'd given them the ok. I have no idea if it's true but rumors have always circulated that he actually hadn't, but didn't want to see wotc (who had taken over DND by this point) screw someone else over. (He left on not so great terms)
