What is the Patterns Of Evidence Film Series?
Patterns of Evidence is a documentary film series that travels through the Bible, investigating evidence of its historical credibility, the accuracy of its transmission through the centuries, and how it impacts the modern world.

I am a nuclear engineer with an MDiv. I wrote many letters (shadow authored) to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (look for the initials ALG) over many years still in the public record that few could understand unless they had the technical training, of which no one can ascribe to me except by my (and others involved) testimony. I wrote over 110 papers in a completely different style and subject with my name on them as author for my MDiv degree. No individual, computer, even AI analysis of a comparison of these two types of self authored documents could or will ever ascertain identical authorship without my attestation. The whole issue of literary analysis of documents is based on the underlying assumption of discounting altogether the traditional understanding of facts (why would generations of believers lie?). Therefore, I am living evidence of the weakness of documentary analysis.

Studying theology made me change my faith. It made me realize that the Trinity is made up. I definitely left the church after that. I am so glad I studied theology. It made me a better person and a true believer of JHWH.

Both Jews and Christians have always considered the Torah/Pentateuch to be Mosaic in origin. The objection that Deuteronomy includes an account of Moses' death is not really a problem. The end of Deuteronomy could simply have been added by Joshua.

Can't detractors comprehend that Moses was writing in third person past tense. Ancient scribes were familiar with this form- This'third person' point of narration was referred to as The Holy Spirit- being disconnected from the prophet's physical flesh and bone mortality.

A major problem with the documentary hypothesis is that it is trying to he unfaslifiable. Whenever someone brings forth an example where the J source has for example E theology or something of the sort, the response is that it's a redactor. This they cannot possibly prove, but they still maintain it has to be so otherwise the theory doesn't hold up. In that sense I think the DH has very little value and it cannot hold up it's claims without circular reasoning

Exactly! I said the same thing. They're essentially flat out GUESSING. And states their guesses as if they're proven facts. Other ancient documents can have ONE author but the Bible is a mash up is such a biased way of approaching the text. These 'scholars' aren't being honest

Did it really debunk the hypothesis though? I haven't seen much information about the curse tablet, since it was discovered and all the tablet seems to show is that Israel was worshipping YHWH, in the second millennium BC. I may have missed something, if so can you post a link to some other research I wasn't aware of?

@@thedude9941 yes you have missed something, while the bible says the Israelites worshiped Yahweh for sometime and then worshiped baal modern Scholars say that Yahweh was originally a Canaanite god and had a wife called Asherah (Which is the Israelites worshiped after Exodus “Queen of heaven”) and say the Israelites after the Babylonian exile started monotheism thousands about thousands of years later than the bible says and then the documentary hypothesis happened but the curse tablet tells us that Israelites were Monotheistic before the Babylonian exile about from 1225 BC and polytheism came later but was then finished again but still many atheists reject that Israelites were in Egypt so this is the problem

Moses was on the mountain 40 days and crucified upside down . Yeshua was in the wilderness tempted by the devil 40 days crucified. Every new testament scriptures always refers back to the new testament

@@jessicabrock8667 where is it said that Moses was crucified? “So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. Deuteronomy 34:5-6 If I remember correctly, tradition is that the apostle Peter asked to be crucified upside down because he didn’t feel worthy to be crucified in the exact manner as Jesus.

Moses died of old age on the mountain, just before Joshua led the people into the Promised Land. He was allowed to see the Promised Land but not enter it, because of the incident at Massah/Meribah.

Gen chapter 1 uses only Elohim when speaking of himself in his creation, but in Gen chapter 2 it changes to YHVH Elohim as he goes on to talk about His creation of man and the garden of Eden. God loved his creation of man. He loves us dearly.

On Professor Emeritus Douglas A. Knight supporting the Documentary Hypothesis, here's a brief excerpt which illuminates more fully his worldview, found in his 2011 book, _Law, Power, and Justice in Ancient Israel,_ 2011 : _"The geographical term preferred in this book will be "ancient Southwest Asia" rather than "ancient Near East" inasmuch as the latter, although conventional in scholarly discussions, is rooted in the colonial period of European hegemony over the region."_ (Page 9, Footnote 2) NOTE : This info was discovered via an Amazon perusal...I've not purchased and read it. I question the wisdom of doing so.

'Yahweh - in the minds of the Documentary Hypothesizers - is connected to The Law' might be a more accurate statement, because clearly that name was known since the beginning of human history in a Biblical sense. It occurs several times throughout Genesis, in quotes from Eve to Abraham and others.

Two core assumptions of the Documentary Hypothesis: 1.) All religions are the product of evolutionary processes. Beginning with a fear of the dark, then worshiping spirits, then gods, then finally monotheism. The E source is the “gods phase” and the J source is the “monotheistic phase “. The other documents are situationally driven. The D source is King Josiah wanting to foist his religious reforms on the nation by claiming divine authority. The P source is wanting to elevate the priests to the highest authority during Ezra’s time so they can be in charge. It is entirely cynical and racist (who can trust the Jews anyway if they are always lying about everything, including their Bible). 2.) Moses was illiterate. Whether you take the late date of 1440 BC or the early 1250 BC for the Exodus, Moses couldn’t have written the Pentateuch because the alphabet didn’t exist yet. Also, Moses is a mythical figure like King Arthur. But if he did exist, the only way for these stories to have been passed down was orally. This is why rock inscriptions in Sinai and the recently discovered lead curse tablet are so important. They keep pushing back the date of the origin of the alphabetic script

J, E, D, and P. Oral traditions precede writing . In many ways authorship is a catching up process to events and personages already having occurred. In sum its very reflexive but at the same time solidifying the group commonalities. Humans experienced the numinous experience of God testified to it and these scribes recorded these experiences.. Divine inspiration was part of numinous experience testimony to the scribes who in turn felt divinely inspired. In some ways this is a patchwork process. The cohesiveness is the centrality of God's presence among those experiencing .

Richard Freidman's book 'Who Wrote the Bible (2nd Ed.) provides an excellent explanation of the Documentary Hypothesis. Freidman's 2017 book 'The Exodus' provides the best explanation for the origin of the Exodus story (hint - look at the tribe without a land inheritance). The scholars in this presentation provide a very shallow explanation - unfortunately.

This PATTERNS OF EVIDENCE documentary interviews only those Bible scholars of a conservative slant, people who for religious reasons are predisposed to reject the very idea of the DH, rather than including scholars like Friedman, who wrote the definitive book for laymen on the topic. The text of DEUTERONOMY has, at its end, this phrase -- "And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, none like him for all the signs and the wonders which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, and for all the mighty power and all the great and terrible deeds which Moses wrought in the sight of all Israel" [34:10-12]. The very wording doesn't make sense unless the writer is speaking from a standpoint far enough in the future from the time of Moses for the audience to get the idea that Moses was unique. After all, we're supposed to believe that his successor, Joshua ben Nun, was able to call upon God to stop the Sun and Moon from going around the sky for an entire day (!), a miracle which makes those of Moses seem paltry by comparison! Whenever the 'author' of a part of the text refers to things from way back when and then compares them to what his audience knows -- "since that day" -- the very wording implies that a considerable amount of time has passed since the events described. Just look up the word "since" in a concordance, and chances are it's a passage where the Redactor is harkening back to an old-time event and comparing it to his own day. Friedman's book is a must-read, and makes a whole lotta sense. But a Bible-believing Christian will forever reject the notion because Jesus is quoted in the Gospels as endorsing the notion that Moses wrote the Pentateuch.

Now could those be titles and manifestations? whereas, if somebody asks you who you are most people always respond with a title of what they do not who they truly are, but what they identify with, and that is always part of the material world. Example, I am a doctor, I am a nurse, I am a construction worker, etc. Now, with that being said, I believe, and this is my personal understanding that Yeshua said to know yourself, and you will be known instead of knowing what you do know who you are from my heart relationship and union with the divine and understand that the divine has always been a spark of God within you, and that is in Torah and every other ancient book, we can find that we have the privilege to read today. Most of this has been hidden from humanity therefore easier to control people by manipulation and fear. I'm not attempting to start a controversy. I'm tempting to start critical thinking therefore I hope when you read this that is what is conveyed to you.

How could Moses (or possibly Aaron?) have written anything in "proto-Hebrew" when he grew up in Egypt and there was no Hebrew writing at all? The oldest proto-Hebrew tiny text fragment is dated to 700 B.C., a certain development time may be added. So Moses should have "received/written" the Ten Commandments and all other texts in Egyptian language/writing, or not?

Apparently one of the claims of the DH, not mentioned here, was that supposedly Hebrew wasn't a written language back when Moses wrote. But archeologist Dr.Douglas Petrovich decoded several rock carvings in and around Egypt that have defied being decoded for a century. He proved they are actually paleo Hebrew! So yes, the Israelites had a written language for hundreds of years before the Exodus.

8:39 - 8:48 ☝️ -This guy gets it right. In the Bible, God has ONE name - Yahweh/Jehovah/YHWH. 'Elohim is merely one of several common terms translated as 'God', which is never spoken of by Yahweh as 'my name' etc; only Yahweh carries that designation.

Exactly. The name is in the Bible almost 7000 times. But has been replaced with titles in later times, like Lord. But YHWH is his name.

It seems to me that the evolution of scripture makes it simply another good read by these scholars, in the process knee capping God. My only issue with all of this is the many scrolls that were discarded in dry caves simply because the reproduction from the original may have had a mere jot or tittle wrong..

"God" is not a name, It's a title. Kind of confusing what I'm supposed to think of people who are supposed to be knowledgeable and refer to "Elohim/God" as a name. Details matter.

Wow. All these scholars and not ONE mention of the priest/scribe Ezra. When he returned from Babylon he oversaw the re-writing of all the destroyed texts. All over 1400 years before our oldest hebrew manuscript. I wonder if this theory stands up to findings in the DSS. Oh and as far as the use of different divine names, I would posit that circumlocution came into greater use in the days of Ezra hence the difference in texts. It was recounted in the book he wrote known as 2 Esdras/4 Ezra. 2Es 14:40 And I took it, and drank: and when I had drunk of it, my heart uttered understanding, and wisdom grew in my breast, for my spirit strengthened my memory: 2Es 14:41 And my mouth was opened, and shut no more. 2Es 14:42 The Highest gave understanding unto the five men, and they wrote the wonderful visions of the night that were told, which they knew not: and they sat forty days, and they wrote in the day, and at night they ate bread. 2Es 14:43 As for me. They present a very over simplified explanation of the Documentary Hypothesis. It is not just the names of God that are involved there are other internal evidences considered also. This could mislead many people who are looking for honest answers.

Wow I’ve never seen so many strawman arguments in one place. If you’re making this video, you must realize that a public understanding of source theory is widening. However misrepresentation followed by unevidenced assertions. The explanatory power of the source theory is confirmed not by the different names of the J and E texts, but the fact that when separated, become resolved of the tensions between doublets. This is further evidenced by vocabulary of the authors and their political leanings. If anyone wants to see a fair representation of the documentary hypothesis, search “Richard Elliot Friedman J E D P” and “Kipp Davis documentary hypothesis”. The irony of these professors who attempt to discredit rational thought and the enlightenment so that they may make the case for reading documents as history from a time when superstition was rampant and they did not yet have science nor historical method. Those of you who are believers should understand that poorly constructed and dishonest arguments found in this video, are some of the reasons your numbers continue to decrease in countries which are not third world.

Moses and Israel could not possibly be literate, because I believe they weren't. Writers never vary in style, even when the type of literature they are writing is different, because I believe that. There had to have been multiple writers even though there is no evidence of this, because I want to believe that. The Torah had to have been written after the Babylonian Captivity, because I want that to be true. The Documentary Hypothesis could be summarized: Moses didn't write the Torah in the 15th Century BC because propounders of the Hypothesis want to believe it, with zero evidence.

There is no such thing as official study of the un-natural , that would carry official ''status'' in society, like a court of law for example, So the very concept of studying the supernatural (as in the case of the Old Testament) is contradictory to a secular scholarly approach to literature. But God and his words by definition are ''super natural'' and ''un natural'' from an academic sense.

It's crazy how anyone can except books written 600 to 1400 years later, by people that had no connection to the so called originators of who they say the information came from, then take that book as Devine. The Bible is the only true and factual book, that can be discerned to the original author's of the writings. Also the Quran removes Jesus as the Son of God, and in the end times, the Quran has the antichrist as the one to worship, but the bible, has Jesus as the one to worship as the Son of God, the rolls are flipped from what the bible says, accordingly to what the Quran teaches, so the muslims will be worshipping the antichrist, while the Christians will worship Jesus, the Son of God.

These guys are just showing they're hand. They're misrepresenting the Scriptures authorship based on the fact that these guys could NEVER write like that, much less write accurate prophecy. They can't even figure out the many layers of prophecy. They have no clue. No humans could have created the Scriptures without God, and Moses wrote Genesis. This is totally ridiculous. Obviously, they have no clue about all the amazing layers of meaning are imbedded in the Hebrew texts.

I wonder what kind of impairment which allows the blind scholars, to overlook things. You cant ignore certain evidence and hypothesis to draw up conclusions. Moses and the Israelites were never in Egpt. The Egyptian hypothesis was never scientifically proven. Ethiopian hypothesis of Moses and the Hebrews had truth to the Israelite, Jewish history. The Hebrew bible is a Babylonian product written by Babylonian Persians that has myths and tales and contradictions. For example, Moses never spoke Hebrew because he predates it. Moses existed in the 14th-15th century BCE. Hebrew existed about 1 000 years later when Judaism was established after the exile. So Moses never spoke it. Scholars believe that he spoke Egyptian only but the Egyptian hypothesis isnt proven. It is being overlooked that he spoke Geez. The Ethiopic Torah and Bibles are the oldest and written in Geez which is also older than Arabic and Hebrew by over a thousand years. The Egyptian Hieroglyphics uses symbols from the Geez script. Ethiopians have the oldest written law which has the first 5 books all written in Geez.

There is no way to prove that theory. Clearly the Torah was written by Moses (who could read and write Egyptian, Greek and Hebrew. All this analysis looking at perceived differences in the books of the Torah is just a fantasy with no ending.

All this mystery talk. Well if you just admit Moses was Akhenaten then we can see clearly. Joseph was Yuya. He was buried in one of the 6 northern tombs. He took the bones of Yuya when he left Amarna. His mother was also taken. Akhenaten took the ark from the pyramid. He also had the bowl of khafre. The essene praised him. The day of Aton ment. He has risen. With a stretched out arm as he did when giving offerings to the light. Gabriel is with him.

As a Jew I am now messanic but I encourage you to understand Hebrew letters. It reveals so much of Yahweh heart. There is so much division . Please don't let a few bad fruits of what I like to call religion bad on the whole group. The Torah is a light. When you study look at the new testament and when you study you will see every new testament verses go back to the old testament. There are 4 layers of bible understanding of the bible. If you have any questions I will help you best I can. For instance Moses was up on the mountain 40 days and crucified on top of the mountain upside down. Yeshua (Jesus ) was in the wilderness 40 days tempted by the devil and crucified on a cross. Another example Yahweh says not to take two types of seeds ,animals and breed together. Science has taken different plants and animals and breed together that they put GMOs in that are causing cancer from the chemicals. Pork we don't eat. But here is why I don't. People say it's because Yahweh had all the laws. He gave us these laws to protect you. You can research this. But they cut all cancer out of the pigs etc before giving it to you. The sad part of some Jews just like what the bible calls gentiles is it is inwardly not showing it outwardly. .talking about GMOs , we got some apples , thought they were organic. My son came got me and said mama there are seeds growing roots inside the apple. Imagine what it's doing to you when you put that in your body. Torah says we should if never been paying for water that was given to us by God. But the world found a way to make money off it what was to be a gift to his people. In Greek sorcerer word is pharmacy. Hebrew it is kasaph. There's alot all sides of religion don't speak of. Makes you wonder who all are really working together.

7:10 'Hashem' isn't a Biblical designation for God; it just means literally 'The Name'. So strictly speaking, it has nothing to do with the text of the Tanakh in the context of terms for God, or the Documentary Hypothesis, because every Biblical scholar knows 'Hashem' was never a Biblical-era designation for The Almighty. Genesis 2 and many others instances in Genesis do record the proper name YHWH, which has been popularly said as 'Yahweh' among scholars, and 'Jehovah' as a common English form, though 'Yahowah' likely approaches the pronunciation of ancient Biblical times. 'Elohim is a word for god, and it's used for Jehovah and pagan deities, so is by no means exclusive. Other related words are 'el, 'eloah. 'Adonai is a term used exclusively for Jehovah in the scriptures, and like 'Elohim, it's plural, but with the inference of something like 'Lord of Lords', literally meaning 'my lords', while 'elohim literally means 'gods'. Quite obvious that the Old Testament that we have now are not divine but written by humans. We don’t even know the authors and the number of authors. The statement made that “It is not a book that is heaven sent. “ will surprise many who believe that it is the literal word of God or at least authored by Moses. Wow. Hence, there maybe snippets of truth but surely one can’t base one’s salvation on a book which is not divine. The only book that claims to be divine ie heaven sent is the Quran. It is the furqan ie the criterion which is sent to correct whatever wrong transmission made in the Old Testament. The Quran claims to be divine and the literal word of God sent to the unlettered prophet ie Muhammad Pbuh who is from the descendants of Ismael from Abraham.

The Qu'ran says Torah and Gospel were revealed by Allah and the Qu'ran was sent to confirm "what was before" (Torah and Gospel). Nothing is said about correcting Torah or the Gospels. He has sent down upon you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel. (Quran 3:3) And it was not [possible] for this Qur'an to be produced by other than Allah, but [it is] a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of the [former] Scripture, about which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds. (Quran 10:37) As to the Torah today, it is virtually identical to the Torah books found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were dated to be 100's of years older than Muhammad. So if the Qu'ran confirmed the Torah that came before it, which would include the Dead Sea copies, and the Torah today is identically to those copies and other old copies, then the Qu'ran also confirms the Torah today. We also have a copies of the Gospels dated from at least 100 years before Qu'ran that show the no changes to the message or doctrine in today's copies. So the comparable copies today match copies that predated and were confirmed to be from Allah according to the Qu'ran.
