Who's in charge of Brexit? - BBC Panorama

In June 2016, the UK voted for Brexit.
Two and a half years on we seem stuck.
Filming with voters in Yorkshire and Kent, Adrian Chiles finds people's opinions are more entrenched and divided than ever. But most seem to agree on one thing - our politicians are failing to get us out of the mess we are in.
Adrian follows MPs through a historic fortnight in Westminster to find out who is in charge - and whether they are putting party politics before the best interests of the country

Jonas Schall Thanks for your good wishes - always nice to hear from out friends in the EU. I have to say that the smugness is usually found amongst our Remainer friends, but thanks for the compliment anyway. Oh and yeah, I’d rather be free than rich - although it must be said that membership of the EU has impoverished a great many, not only of their money, but also of their self respect. Bless.

@MrKingdig You do realize the US will always have to outsource to third world countries, if the US was to pull back all the manufacturing from the third world and back to the US, then the rest of the world would have to drop the US dollar as a reserve currency. How will those countries get US dollars to buy oil from saudi arabia if they can't sell products to the US, what would be the point of using the dollar world wide in fact it would become scarce. America is able to print as much money as it wants and go into debt and have mass consumerism because of the world's reseve currency status, if it loses that status then you will see massive inflation in america, it would make the great depression look like a picnic and with all the racial tension, it could easily breakp up into smaller countries. So whatever Trump wants you to believe, the US needs the third world more because of the way it's economy is set up
@wamnicho
@wamnicho 5 лет назад
@MrKingdigThe US Dollar was the world's reserve currency before globalization because it was backed by Gold. The problem with a Gold backed currency is that there's not enough gold in the world meet the demand of such a huge population. You can only print money equivalent to the Gold reserves you have otherwise people will lose confidence in your currency and it will lead to inflation, that's the reason the US switched to the petrol dollar in 1970 because countries like France realized that the US was printing more money than it had in Gold reserves to finance the Vietnam war and so so many countries led by France started demanding their Gold back from the US treasury. So in order to prevent the collapse of the US dollar, Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger had to turn to the Saudi monarchy and made a deal with Saudi Arabia and other oil exporting countries to only accept US dollars for oil and invest any excess profits in US bonds in return, the US would protect the Saudi Monarchy and keep them in power. Why do you think America has been at war for a long time in the middle east either directly or through proxy regardless of who's president, it is to protect the status of the US dollar as a reserve currency otherwise if OPEC stopped accepting dollars then all those excess dollars the US has been printing and exporting to the rest of the world in return for goods would come back to the US and cause massive inflation and probably lead to a societal collapse. Trump can run his mouth as he wants to but there's nothing he can do except attack immigrants to fool his base that he's really doing something. He said, he would lower the national debt but he has increased it to 22 trillion dollars. And remember, Trump is only temporary and no president will stay forever because in 4-8 years, another globalist will be elected, that's the fundamental flaw in democracy.
@wamnicho
@wamnicho 5 лет назад
@MrKingdig The US dollar was backed by hold until 1970 you moron. If Trump is so anti-globalist, then why doesn't he close all the US military bases around the world and bring back all the soldiers at home and focus on taking care of america, why does he need bases in the middle east then, why is he interfering in Venezuela's politics, you see America or the west in general is just full of hypocrisy. And your comment about ann coulter coming to power is just wishfull thinking, first of all you need lots of money billions to run a campaign, trump was an exception because he was already famous and a billionaire too but he still got some funding from big donars for his campaign. And americans are so used to buying cheap stuff that it would be impossible to bring back manufacturing, an iphone could cost like 5000 dollars if it was entirely made in america. Keep dreaming, manufacturing will never come back to the US unless you restructure the way americans live

As a European and firm believer in MUCH GREATER INTEGRATION; I think it essential that the UK LEAVE the EU!! There is NO PLACE in the EU for a country that can DELAY further integration with a VETO VOTE!! As far as that is concerned, YOU have done us all a BIG FAVOR!! The economic disruption will definitely be significant, the disruption to RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT I suspect will also be substantial. Whatever affections I have for the UK, having spent some of my childhood there, the current attitude that the Republic of Ireland can AGAIN be bullied and FORCED to cave on the Backstop, only shows the FUNDAMENTAL ERROR under which Britons live!! IRELAND IS THE EU!! The GOOD FRIDAY AGREEMENT was a CENTRAL PART of the EU NEGOTIATION POSITION from the very beginning!!! @markhughes8314 5 лет назад
So if the uk does actually leave without a deal, who is going to put up a hard border? The EU, that's who. So you have got that wrong eh. And don't worry about integration, what with most of Europe signing up to the global compact for migration, that's where if any migrant gets to your country they will automatically be entitled to full rights, all the benefits that an indigenous person has. There will be no difference between legal, illegal or indigenous, as soon as they get into the country .And there is the Marrakech declaration of course. That's where they are going to integrate between 150 to 200 million African migrants into the EU over the next 30 years. Macron wants this yesterday. Hopefully we will have a fairer immigration programme where we don't discriminate against non EU workers like we do now. We need to be more like the Australians I think. All for migration, but it should benefit the people of the country and I fail to see how importing millions from the third world will benefit us. Britain does not rule over anybody that doesn't want it to. Ireland is in the EU but Northern Ireland isn't. Unlike Scotland, if they wanted reunification, they would be part of the EU. So like Scotland and Wales, its down to them.

These "Tory traitors" as one lady calls them are MPs who are there to represent first and foremost their constituents, who voted remain as well as leave. Leave voters, who may have voted that way but who also want the chance to have a say in how we exit and to do it sensibly with some security. This split between leave and remain says very little as to why people voted leave or remain, on what grounds they would want to leave because they were not asked about that part. It is up to the politicians who are voting on their deals to go in and do that on their behalf and if they believe their consistuents do not want a deal which they believe is insecure, they are not going to vote for it! When a politician does not vote with their party, I don't tend to see it as "rebels" as media portray them- I see a politician who has actually listened to what their constituents have said and not how their party expects them to vote. These "rebels" are actually doing their job.

Even when people like James Dyson who campaigned to leave EU is moving head office from Britain to Singapore, media couldn't care about the bleak future we will have if we leave EU. By the time people realise most anti EU politicians and campaigners are hypocrites and liars it will be too late. Like how Nigel Farage was paying his foreign wife on tax payers expenses and hiding money in tax havens. Farage always planned to resign if people voted to leave the EU, to leave us out the EU with Tories in power, who only work in interests of upper classes, bankers and corporations. Another Nigel, Nigel Lawson who made our economy collapse in early 90s after Tories closely linked the British economy with USA in 1980s relying on many being in debt, because they didn't like EU preventing Tories and their friends mistreating British people, was advising we leave the EU while he applies to live in France. Some say they want to leave EU because they don't want immigrants, but leaving EU protects interests of the foreigners at the top. Like Greek asylum seeker Prince Philip and his Greek royal family who all came here when they were kicked out their own country. Or Bullingdon Club members like Boris Johnson whose family changed their name from the Turkish asylum seeker relative name to Johnson to sound more British. Michael Gove said Labour were liars for saying he would take away EMA if Tories won election, and then they did take away EMA, is advising we leave the EU. People think New York born Boris Johnson can lead us out the EU, but media made a massive fuss when he was foreign secretary and said a stupid unimportant thing on a TV show, but media didn't care when he said on same show there wasn't a vote on 2nd war against Iraq, when more Tories had voted yes to 2nd war than other parties. That means he's either a liar seeing if he can blame others for what Tories caused and media are in with him, or him and the media are stupid. Tories made millions unemployed and destroyed whole communities, then didn't like EU preventing them trying to destroy anybody not any use at being a slave for few at the top. Such as when economy collapsed in early 90s, after Thatcher sold off council housing without using money to build more so many had to private rent at more expense, they made 18 year old in bedsit pay same poll tax as lord in a manor, VAT increases, making our public services worse in Europe, while giving rich tax cuts. She didn't like EU preventing Tories making policies to make many suffer, such as EU saying workers should have enough breaks and genetically modified ingredients should be labelled. Tories make everybody hate us for reasons only few at the top gain from, and idiots think that's nationalism. They would fight for Tory policies, while our students have most debt in Europe. What media even tells people to look at EU compliant food labels over original USA ones in USA section of supermarket, to show EU makes companies label more? Or that USA uses ingredients such as mineral oil in food banned in the EU
@SuzLa1

We will have more asylum seekers if we leave the EU, as Tories don't want to be part of a peaceful Europe working for education and health. We have more pride in what we do with rest of Europe, such as Concorde, electronic music and World Wide Web. Even Beatles would be a boring rock and roll band if they hadn't gone to Germany and had style from the German artists they mixed with. Anything we do with the USA they use to help get inflated egos and claim they did it. Like how USA made the Nazi German V-2 inventor Wernher Von Braun and his team the head of Nasa to make moon rockets, and claim they did it all. When Thatcher was causing trouble for us before with EU, the secret service whistle blower David Shayler told how she was going along with USA funding Al Qaeda against Gaddafi. A country people didn't pay household bills, while more old British people were dying of cold than before. Or helped cause Lockerbie by making Britain only country that let USA use us as airport to bomb Libya, which killed many. Tories would rather be doing things such as funding extremists in Syria to overthrow Assad, or sending arms to backward nations like Saudi Arabia, than giving us pride and positive future part of a peaceful Europe

You seem not to account for the fact that EU membership was always controversial and never had a popular democratic mandate AND the fact that no effort has been made by the Remain coalition to understand why they lost; after all myth, misunderstanding and underestimation were by no means confined to the Leave campaign. There was just little opportunity to express that desire with the mainstream establishment. If the referendum didn't happen, it was going to come head on sooner or later. Look at ukip cleaning up at the last European elections. Remainers are only trying to delay the inevitable; Brits have been a thorn in the progress in further political eu integration. I'm not denying that the EU needs reforming, but the EU needs the UK and the UK needs the EU. And, not to forget, that the UK has played an important role in the development of the EU today. It's all very well people saying 'just leave' but it's incredibly complex and millions of people, one way or another, will be affected. The UK should go to Brussels and apologise for all the time wasting and say from now on we'll play a more prominent role but we want reform. And, you know what? Everybody would love us afterwards.

To take a few of your point: the Lords have no power, they can only debate and delay a bill, not stop it, to do so would cause a constitutional crisis. The Royal Family are just remnants of history, kept on because of the tourist they attract, a huge British industry. The EEU parliament is full of non-Brits for whom no one in the UK voted, and they currently have power over UK law and court rulings. The UK government is called Her Majesty's Government because of its origins. Centuries ago, we were ruled by our monarch and ministers were merely advisors to the monarch - hence Her or His Majesty's. Gradually, the monarch lost power and parliament became supreme, although the Queen still has a veto which she never uses. Hence the origin of Her Majesty's Government. It's purely historical. We're an island with a national pride and a strong, if sometimes checkered history. We don't like being told what to do by outside powers. It shouldn’t ever be up to Parliament to try to turn over Brexit result neither should it be anything todo with the Media.

3 years ago people would have been left confused about all the current fuss over the actual implementation of Brexit. There wasn't mass hysteria / demand for planning when the UK signed up to the EU treaties so why is it so bad now that they're being revoked?

The maddening thing is that nobody, but nobody has outlined any specific benefit to be derived from leaving the EU, whether that be social, business, political, legal, financial, trade related, security or defense related. Please someone, at this late stage just spell out the specific details of even one benefit that can be enjoyed by the people or the nation.

"Like turkeys voting for Christmas." There it is! MPs have to step up and say, "The country made a decision, but they made the wrong decision. My voters decided to stay, and I'm going to vote in the parliament to stay." Parliament is in charge. That's it.

The idea that we can do better trade deals on our own than we can within a block of countries which is 500 million people strong is nonsense and I'm yet it hear of any examples of why that would be the case. The business fundamentals don't make sense unless we deregulate, reduce employment standards etc to basically compete with the EU as a low cost, low quality economy. I know some people would love that because they could make huge sums of money at the expense of ordinary working people who they could exploit. But it's not in the interest of the vast majority of voting people. Very worrying.

"The referendum result was clear enough". The vote was 51.89% leave vs 48.11% remain. That margin is so close, and with all of this chaos and Britain seemingly not understanding the true impact of leaving the EU, why not have a second referendum? 51% is hardly a resounding consensus for such an important and critical decision.
@katebolger9317
@katebolger9317 5 лет назад
it might be a close percentage of the referendum but its actually around 1 million people difference, which would be a landslide in any other vote and 60+ percent of constituency to leave and 30 odd to remain... i would say the country is very strongly leave

As usual no serious challenging of the reasoning of leave voters. we are where we are mainly because the GFA is incompatible with Brexit, Cameron never thought he'd lose and nobody had any kind of plan whatsoever.

Well said Adrian in your conclusion. There is a clear lack of national interest and statesmanship from the politicians. Let's be true to ourselves, just for this historic event at least, which will define the future of Britain.
