All the boyfriend had to do was stick it out for a year. This was always going to be a temporary thing. He knows she has to get through this job and it's going to be crazy hours and demands but that at the other end, it's going to open so many doors for her. Yet he's somehow treating it like she suddenly doesn't love him anymore. So she missed your birthday because of unforeseen circumstances. You still had a good time with your mates and you have a birthday every year. Celebrate it again on a day next week when she's home. If my boyfriend came to me and said look, it's going to be shit for a little while but it's going to allow me to follow my dreams, I'd be like hell yeah, we'll make the best of it. You bring me that cupcake at midnight and I'll eat it while you tell me about how insane your work event was and we'll watch TV.

I feel you and agree with you on almost everything. Almost everything, because I imagine understanding the circumstances is one thing and then experiencing feelings coming with the circumstances is another. He didn't communicate well at all, that's obvious, but I do understand where he was coming from and can empathise with him in his situation too - in my book putting yourself completely on hold for a whole year is a big sacrifice. Having said that, diminishing her job and her efforts was uncalled for and just wrong on his part.

@@deer541Putting “yourself on hold” means that he is not Andy’s top priority while she works that job. It means plans will change she won’t be available most of the week, and be more distant. I think BOTH Andy and her boyfriend could have handle things better. He was immature about things, he keeps making fun of the job even though Andi started to take things seriously, so he did act like a jerk for the birthday and the Paris thing. Andi knows her job is incredibly demanding so during the free time she had a home it’s a good time to relax, catch up with friends and get some gifts in advance for important dates. Also it’s important to not make promises for plans. Maybe celebrate things in advance or later date. Make it clear that “I can go out for 30mns- 1 hour but if Miranda calls I have to go”.

Id you see your friend flirting with someone else and their bf/gf is also your friend, would you really just let it slide? Now granted, yes, in the movie the friends and bf are carricatures and failures in communication; but still, in principle, they were on the right. And i know it will be taken the wrong way as my portrait is a guy. At the end of the day, Miranda finally smiles at Andrea (though she does not show it to her as she walked inside the car) when she finally walks away to pursue her true passions.

I’m a guy. I did an internship with a female politician; and worked for a female Director General in the government. For a lot of woman at the top, this is how they have to be to be taken seriously. They have to put in extra effort to make it that far, and then when they get there they have to sacrifice everything - family, relationships, extra-curricular and their health - just to stay on top. It’s sad.

[Edited for grammar] How interesting. I've been hearing this thought process from a lot of women for a Very long time. And it strikes me as interesting that these women never seem to realize that Men have been making these Exact Same sacrifices forever. Just because you don't see something doesn't mean it's not there. Therefore, Andi isn't right in thinking it would be different if the editor was a man. He'd be required to make the Same sacrifices as she'd had to make. If Greatness was easy, everyone would do it. To be in first place and the last word in most industries is no easy task. Coca-Cola isn't slacking off because they're the #1 soda company in the world. Coca-Cola works harder than Pepsi because Pepsi is the #2 soda company in the world and Pepsi wants to be #1 and Coke isn't having it. Do you think for a second Coke is going to hire some kumbaya CEO that's into cooperation, fairness, and everybody getting a turn to be #1; or a fire eating beast that doesn't give an inch to Pepsi or anyone else? Women are just late finding out about this mindset because it's not a female one. They have to learn that the women who get to That Top Spot got what they wanted, and very well knew about The Trade-offs. The same ones Men have been dealing with always. You wanna be a CEO with the penthouse, the town car with a chauffeur, the 7 figure salary, incredible perqs, the envy, the power, the glory? You want to be the leader and sit at the Big Dog table? Well, you can't take the elevator. Ya gotta take the stairs and battle every single boss on that level, and every time you lose, you have to start over somewhere else at or near the bottom. You have to learn every single time and it takes over your life because it takes Everything a person has to get good, and get lucky. Too many Women don't seem to understand how things work at the basic level. If You want to Build something, there's going to be competition, but at least you can have more control. That control has it's own costs. It's just different. Different than if you want to sit in the Big Chair in the place Somebody Else built. You want to be the CEO of Coca-Cola, UPS, United Airlines, Hewlett-Packard, some huge entertainment company, law firm, university system, or HMO? There's someone in That One Seat who wants to keep it, people right next to them who've been working to get in That One Seat, and all the people below them right down to the new Ivy League employee who just started yesterday and is looking up, their eyes on That One Seat. Women aren't special, which is why the ones who think they should be able to play by another set of rules Never make it. Getting to be CEO requires sacrifices, many, many sacrifices. And if you aren't prepared to make them, you may climb up, but only to a certain level. Because the Men and Women who don't have a problem making those sacrifices are moving on to the next round. Andi had what it took. But, she realized that it wasn't what she Wanted. We'll never know what she'll do when she becomes that new employee at that newspaper, what sacrifices she'll be willing to make. But, the first one is likely to be giving up the boyfriend and refusing to let go of her dream job just to chase him around as he becomes the prep chef at some third rate restaurant in a third rate market. Or... maybe now Andi sees a future where being on the rise isn't worth giving up the man she believes can be in her future, and she bails to go work in a less competitive market with him, where they build a happy life together. It's been done, either way

Honestly, Andy’s friends and bf were being really selfish. Andy told them that this job meant a-lot to her, that she would have to be on the grind for 1 year. Who hasn’t had to do that? The flirting with the guy is bad, but nothing crazy happened. (She slept with him after the breakup.) The missing the birthday thing sucks, but he handled it worse than a child. The friends were so happy to take her gifts, but they make fun of her clothes (which she says she actually likes), demean her dreams, and shame her for doing exactly what she said she would have to do. The boyfriend lowkey sucks. He was so wildly unsupportive of her, and seemed jealous that she was doing well in her job since it was only when _he_ got promoted, he was cool about it. Funnily enough, Gucci and Prada, while popular, are actually not that high quality. If a piece makes it to a vintage store and it is still in good condition it could probably outlast some of the top fashion brands! You stay in the dumpster 😂
@kay-jay1581

Yeah a lot of people now days side with Andy and her work ethic and so do I😂 But I also guess it’s easier to sort of be okay with the fact that your it’s very busy for now and you’re not a priority anymore. Then six months pass and your friend keeps making plans and then ditching. Eventually it becomes frustrating. Also Andy could have handle things a little better with her relationships. For example don’t make promises for events. And if an important birthday or date it’s coming up, buy gifts in advance or celebrate earlier or later date. Etc.
@markwood6056
@markwood6056 8 месяцев назад
Yes and No. Actually we see her multiple times express utter destain for the job, for the workers and for that life style. She is under the impression that doing this terrible job that she hates with a boss and coworkers that she abused by will open doors down the line. But while she is told this, it's just hearsay. Let's put this in a different light. How would you feel is this wasn't a job but a relationship. Where someone you love suddenly changes completely doing a 180 from what she states she likes to what she states she doesn't. With someone who is utterly emotional abusive to her. Would you not say something to that person about the change in her behavior? At the end of the movie, the message is that her friends were right, that the job changed her into someone different. Someone that she doesn't want to be. Now who was honest with her? It was her Dad. Her boyfriend, and her group of friends. Now people say her Friends and boyfriend should just accept those changes and support her? Thats bullshit to be blunt. Her friends and her boyfriend meet her, become close to her based on whom she was. Not the person she changed into. When people in your life change you have the right to comment about it, and you have the right to decide that they are no longer whom you want to be close to. Same with Andy. And I am not saying Andy and her boyfriend are a great match (they very well might not be). But be very clear he didn't change. This was who he was always presented as. it was Andy who changed, and for the bulk of it, Andy by her own admission doesn't like who she became. Now of course because this is a film adaption the characters (on both sides of this issue) could be very different. making no judgment about how the book portrays them through he course of the story.

I love this movie. But here's my biggest qualm about it: no matter what your job, if your boss happens to call you and youre hanging out with friends in a bar and they grab your phone and start throwing it around like hot potato, anyone would get annoyed and tell your pals to quit it! And Nate should have been supportive no matter what Andy was doing to a good job, and still diss Miranda while at it. Shes apologizing at the end at the coffee shop and he's still giving her grief. Fun fact: up until this movie was released, Meryl Streep was notorious in Hollywood for having the worst fashion sense in the entire industry, she would not care at all for high fashion and would show up to red carpets wearing things that looked straight off the rack. Imagine the general surprise when she was cast to play a version of Anna Wintour aka the empress of fashion. Also got to point out that every since the Devil Wears Prada, it's been aknowledged that her red carpet looks have improved tremendously haha

I think it’s important that the screenplay shows Andy’s friends and boyfriend as being continuously selfish and immature in order to better highlight Andy having to stand on her own without the support and empathy of even those people she (rightfully) should have expected would be there for her without question. This makes her character’s journey more substantial by revealing Andy’s strength and self-reliance in the face of obstacles occurring not only at work but in her personal relationships too. This seems to surprise even her, and that resilience is shown building her confidence throughout the movie. It also puts the viewer even more in her corner by making us realize how strong her character actually is, something we weren’t necessarily expecting from the beginning.

I'm not a fan of the ending where Andy gets back together with her Ex. She was evolving while He stayed the same. He wasn't right about everything, she was learning and becoming a different person, and that person was driven and confident and good at her job. The fact that he didn't want her to change and be the same person she was before speaks volumes about his view of her. it would have been better if she just realized she is a different person from where she started, and if he couldn't accept her as she is, then they just aren't right for each other, because we saw plenty of times that Andy likes the person she became even before Miranda pointed out how similar they were.

This is one of my favorite dramedy movies, just because the acting and writing are so superior to many of the movies of the time and pretty much any movie of today. I don't own a lot of movies anymore, but this one has stayed in my hard copy collection. I was never a person who was into typical fashion, but I did find myself really appreciating what goes into it when this movie came out, which was when I was dressing in "early mother" and was all about the comfort. I do love a good makeover movie, however, so long as the soul does not get made over in the end.

In the book, Miranda was so much more tyrannical than they showed here, and, yes, people that actually work in the fashion industry, especially the big named people really are that mean and dramatic. In fact, the character of Miranda was fashioned after the real life chief editor of Vogue, Anna Winter. Its obviously an exaggerated caricature, but still. The movie did do a good job of showing Miranda sweep stability though

@Saeiyu

The fashion industry is highly demanding. I think the scene with the run through is especially important once you get the whole context. When Miranda says "Countless jobs depend on this" She means it. She is not talking only about the designer, seamstress and models. She is talking from her perspective as an editor, the publishers, marketing teams, the newspaper salespeople, the people who sell these items, those who buy the items to put in their stores, the ones that make the materials, shipping companies. Fashion seems like a vaid industry untill you look close and realize how many people are impacted by it and how one piece of clothing might go through hundreds of people through tens of processes before it gets to you, and after you give it away it goes back to the cycle of vintage sellers, on and on until it ends in a landfill. It is quite the trip if you ask me. It is also highly detailed which means that if something goes wrong the losses could be from thousands to billions at the least. Is there any way anyone can be less than stressed in those positions?

Lot of people miss that Andi should've had a handle on the situation BEFORE Miranda called her: All Andi had to do was check the weather reports before she left, and upon seeing there was an impending hurricane, get in touch with someone who would've told Miranda she had to leave. At the very least, at that point, Miranda has a choice to leave and make it on time, instead of being stranded.
@kool2btrue
@kool2btrue 7 месяцев назад
Another thing to point out is that the Miranda argument Andi walked onto was about Miranda missing an event due to the storm. Later when Miranda breaks down about the divorce and Andi asks if she could do anything else, Miranda says "your job". Full circle moment, where it is implied that when people fail to do their jobs, Miranda's personal life is affected. Miranda still chose the job, but it brings up some nuance to her character's demands. She actively sacrifices a lot for her career while all the people around whine.

Sure Miranda could have checked the weather, but as @videohistory722 mentioned, it was Andi's job to make sure this didn't happen at all. Is it an unreasonable expectation? Sure it is. My only problem with the script is the coda scene with Andy’s boyfriend at the restaurant (which I think is supposed to represent the resolution of all her personal relationships in general). I think the movie would have worked much better if that scene had a more resolute Andy at that point. Perhaps she could still acknowledge some mistakes on her part, but it definitely didn’t flow logically for me that she basically took all the “blame.” (What blame?). I think the only reason they wrote it that way is because she had sex with another guy while in Paris, which is not only sexist but just plain silly. I think it would have flowed much better tonally if they showed Andy with her now improved sense of confidence gained by successfully managing so many obstacles throughout the movie. I’m not sure how I’d have written Nate’s end of the conversation, but that whole “we can have long distance grilled cheese fun together” because everything is all better now - that just felt totally out of place with everything that preceded it. It felt completely cheesy. 😁

@roddo1955 7 месяцев назад
Yeah. I would've preferred them both to get together and just talked things out and go their separate ways on good terms. Maybe a cheesy scene where they leave the coffeeshop and walk off in opposite directions. And he suddenly turns around "Hey Andy!...Those boots really work with the jacket" Andy grins, turns and....bumps into Miranda. Miranda stares her down until Andy spontaneously combusts into flames and ends up in a pile of ashes. Miranda takes out her cellphone: "Is there a particular reason why my driver isn't here yet? Has he gone to Qatar to get the fuel? Is it impossible for my staff to complete a simple task?" Fin.

What's unrealistic is that she got home or left home before her boyfriend did. He's a chef. If he's working the early shift or the lunch crowd, he'd be up early. If he's working the dinner crowd he'd be back by 10 at the earliest. Why? Food prep. Cleaning. Making sure they have everything ready for the next day. You start early you gotta make sure that everything is ready to go as soon as the order come in, no one wants to wait an hour for their food so you have to have everything ready to put it together, cook it and serve it. End of the day, you need to make sure the kitchen is clean, they're dealing with things people eat, they cook somewhere dirty the whole place could be shut down. You'd think he'd be a bit more sympathetic to Andi for having (like him) a stressful and demanding job that requires hours of work, focus and attention to detail, and for all to be delivered with speed. People may say it's ridiculous to be that focused on food when you could just throw something in the oven or the microwave, people could laugh at the focus on cleanliness, people could laugh at how focused chefs need to be on how thick or thin a cut is, how much focus they put on timing, or what they have int he storeroom or the fridge. People could say it's ridiculous to focus on how a meal is presented on a plate and that it doesn't matter how it's presented so long as the food is on the plate. But it's important to chefs. It's important to the business they're a part of. Their work demands respect. But clearly whoever wrote this didn't know that otherwise they'd show the life of a chef a bit more realistically or maybe made him a bit more sympathetic. Either way - she's focused on her job because of the career opportunity doing well at the job could do, and they need to 'take a break'. He gets a new job and it's all 'we'll work something out' because he's expecting her to not take her job seriously but to make a relationship work with him when he's in another city. And he has the audacity to act as if she 'lost herself' for 'shoes and clothes' not because a good recommendation from a respected editor in the publishing and magazine world could guarantee her a job at just about any magazine or newspaper that she wanted? Jerk.

When I was in highschool I didn't fit in with the others. At some point other girles suggested to me to wear more "modern" cloths. At that point I wore cloths that were confortable or just different form other teenage fashion, also some hand me downs because I was not much into shopping. So I went shopping bought new cloths but I didn't feel comfortable or got more confidence wearing them, I felt naked. And the worst thing was. I remember buying purple velvet pants that were artifically aged at the knees so the black plasticy fabric undeneath was revealed the rest of the pants was shiny(at a shop that was not one fo the cheepest) and I was so proud of it and thought finally I was wearing the lates fashon. I even liked to wear it along with the top I bought in the same shop. The first time I wore it a school a guy from my class said to me mockingly "What are you wearing there is that modern now? Because those pants looks so old." I almost cried alsmost ruined my joy in wearing those cloths. And in the end I was right from the start putting on different cloths didn't help me a bit fitting in. That's why I don't like make over movies that much. - I know Andy is in a different position since she is working in the fashion industry but I still don't like the way she is treated. -Besides don't forget always wearing the lates fashon costs money even if you don't buy Prada or Gucci.

She gave them some fantastic gifts and in that very same sitting they messed with her phone and her job which was where those gifts came from. Why?? Did they really not realize those two things were connected?? Ms Streep was fantastic in this. I cannot really complain about the tough woman boss lady routine as it seems women in higher levels of any company, especially in the time frame this was set in, end up having to be tough or end up kicked around and stepped all over. She nearly was in the end. Things eventually have to change and at least as the tough boss lady she was able to at least pull strings to get a choice of replacements for herself.
