This monitor makes FPV more social. Many times I bring a spare goggle for spectators. This monitor at 175 is much more affordable than a full goggle and much smaller. Also, the automatic analog and hdzero switching is clutch for races
As someone who does a lot of promotion of the hobby and sport of racing this is a great product. We regularly have major racing events at Airshows and other events where we have staff who engage the crowd and showcase the sport of racing. These staff members were using EV800's and other analog handheld screens to give children and spectators a view of what the pilots see. However, now that pilots are moving to HDZERO for racing we can have races that are all HDZERO and its harder to give people that up close view of what is going on. Only so many people can crowd around TV's and things. This product allows the use of a single screen and if a pilot is on analog or HDZERO you still get their feed and can hopefully help grow the sport by showcasing it to someone who has never seen it before. Bardwell is right - if you are just getting this for yourself it might not have the value when you can just use your goggles, but really this is device that is designed to be shared with others and grow FPV.
From other resources, it seems the high cost of the goggles is actually in the binocular optics which cost HDZero $300 from their source. The monitor does not use or need these options as a simple screen will suffice.

Stick it on the fatshark transformer box goggle it's only $19.
I'm an organizer of a race chapter that flies a nearly even split between analog and HDZero. I'm often fielding questions from visitors, and having a monitor would be a much better tool for answering most of those questions than a set of goggles. The monitor also allows head and hands free spectating if you're busy with something else. I wish the price were lower. Maybe it will come down around the holidays.
Another underrated feature of the HDZero gear that is huge for analog is no rolling video. Never was able to fly when video would roll. Nicer DVR without the rolling
Appriciate you explaining the 540p90hz mode and compatibility with the screen and HDMI out. Lots of reviewers overlook it even though it’s a main selling point for HDZero these days.
Great review Josh, I have the emax transporter goggles which have never been used as goggles. I set it up on my bench to check video when repairing, I use it at races to watch other pilots from the pit area, spot for pilots on hdzero, when i am at STEM engagement activities and more. The battery life sucks on it and i can't view or spot for analog pilots with it. That is exactly what this solves and was built for. In regards to built in battery, they have designed a 3d printable case that screws onto the back via those mounting holes that are already there.
This is something racing has been needing for a long time. It will make racing a social experience again, rather than just sitting around waiting for your turn you can see how your friends are doing. It’s kind of a faff using WiFi from goggles etc, it will also make the job of spectating much easier. I personally can’t wait until there’s a row of 6 at every race for the spectators. Only down side is it’s not 90hz but then it would be twice the price
@@ferocious_r Connect it to your PC and play a sim on it lol. Realistically it would be for the same things the HDMI in on the goggles are for, walksnail.
I fly fixed wing FPV with a screen and it’s great. Wearing goggles for hours at a time isn’t a good option and I interact with my aircraft on my laptop in flight so another strike for goggles. My only complaint would be that the screen isn’t big enough. Why use a battery at all? Just plug it into your car. It’s versatile and does everything! Very cool 😎!
just need a walksnail version now... ideal to setup next to you so people can join the fun. I often take my boy flying and it would be nice for him to see what's happening.
Whenever I go flying in the park, I set up ground station with a 10" screen connected via HDMI to an analog monitor (120 $) similar to the HDZero one. It's great because everyone stops by, gets curious, and people come up to talk to me, asking questions about the hobby. Quite a few are interested in getting started themselves. The kids love it and don't want to leave. People come up to thank me for the view from the sky. I also have a second pair of goggles for those who want to try out FPV. It makes the whole experience much more sociable and fun, and I meet some great people. It's one of the main reasons I go flying these days. So yeah, I'm definitely going to buy the HDZero Monitor and as you said the intended use is not for people to fly with it. :)
The reason they probably don’t do the auto switching on the goggles is that you don’t want it switching back and forth if your signal gets weak. It’s not as big an issue if that happens and you are spectating. I haven’t used any of this hardware but I would guess that auto switching for the pilot might not be a good idea.
I personally love the battery solution they used. I have my own analog monitor and I use 3M Dual Lock to attach an analog RX, battery, voltage regulators and a little analog DVR. The HDZero Monitor looks very clean by comparison. If I used HDZero or if I didn't already have parts to DIY my own analog screen, I might have been willing to purchase the HDZero Monitor. I'm using my analog monitor to let neighbor kids watch the video from my tiny whoops.
@@rustyshaklford9557 Even if I make a new backplane, I think I'd want the battery to be external and held with a strap. I want the option of using a variety of battery packs. I wouldn't want to limit myself to packs which fit internally.
@@ddegn I'd just design it to fit the largest pack, and use foam blocks to pack it out if I put in a smaller pack, but that would make it pretty bulky.
This would be great with a box goggle adaptation product of some design for sure. I'm imagining it de-cased and put into maybe a lightweight PLA box goggle print. I totally agree with you about how it could have been a great transforming box goggle especially coupled with an hdzero BNF quad and maybe an entry level transmitter with built in ELRS.
It's great for letting friends see your hdzero feed, and for desk work. Also it's very affordable for what it is. I like the battery options and will probably print a battery back panel.
Can someone that has one, confirm that the A/V in gets the same love from the 720 upscale that the analog side of the DVR gets? HDMI out for A/V in as well? Really excited for mine to show up, with some luck it will be a nice replacement/upgrade for the powerplay that is never in stock. Sony VX collectors stumbled upon our fpv DVR (powerplay) gear and use them for a tapeless recording solution, can be a high commodity on eBay recently with roughly the same if not higher price than this new entry (hdz monitor). This is going to become a big utility for my hobby. I plan on using one for some fpv ground vehicles (no hdz goggles, yet.), some analog Hijinx, and hopefully some sweet skatepark action on the VX. In my mind, we should be able to connect a Rapidfire module through the a/v as well, correct? Seems to be a cool little gadget, few minor (we assume) tweaks/additions to the design and it'd be practically perfect.
Funny I said 200$ in my head. Paid 400$ or 500$ I forget for the 2nd pair of the DJI Goggles so I can share the experience with my family and spectators. HDMI out was clunky and limited. I like it being it's own device.
My thoughts on the battery strapped to the back: i dont hate it. I'd personally throw a nice big 2200mah on it and use it as a kick stand so the monitor can stand on its own if you dont have a tripod to screw it onto
If I recall correctly, they fit everything into the goggle they could while keeping it at the size and price point it is, so analog is an external add on - similarl to most high end goggles. But yes, that’d be cool! This produce is for me, for bench and spectating! Cool bonus that it can do analog as well
That thing seems to have been purposely made to solve the exact issue I ran into at the last big race I attended. You want to spectate or show to the members of the public, but pilots are running maybe 2/3 analog 1/3 HDZero. Switching from HDZero to the external module bay is pretty annoying and slow, and you may not know beforehand if they run analog or HDZero so switch from one pilot to another in the middle of the race after one crashes is too slow. I actually would love to have the same option on thz googles to just tune to a channel and have the system switch from one to the other itself. Just a bit sad that this does not have an hdmi input and a 90fps capable screen.
One more thing. I have a set of Viper goggles that just use a monitor that is about the same size as the HDZero monitor and it just clips on the front. There is a pretty good chance that I could use that headset shell and mount the HDZero camera right to it. IF that did work, then I would have the best of all worlds. Even with moving to a ground station, it is always nice to have options. For me the true comparison is how this monitor compares to other analog monitors (and Not goggles). Is there an analog monitor (screen with receiver built in) that compares to the analog side of the HDZero monitor? If so, then do tell.
I got an external hdmi display for my walksnail goggles. Really nice for spectating, and I've even put my goggles on someone else and flown an acro flight through the screen so they can get familiar with the immersion in the goggles.
I have an Eachine Analog Monitor in my Backpack all the time, so when some people approach me and wanna know more about the hobby (or show signs of drone-karen) I just put that display in their hands and let them watch. The Karen who is afraid of military spy tech quickly realizes there is no spying with analog vid and everyone else gets what is so amazing about this hobby. But: Built-in-Battery that decayed quite a bit over the years and now barely makes 20mins of use... and analog only! Having a display on a tripod also is really helpful on the bench during the initial setup and test. When I saw Botgrinders vid about this I instantly bought it. I love that it combines analog and HDZ (and agree with you here... why not in the goggles, and does this analog actually work - unlike the goggles system which is super super chosey to format and analog cam used?)... but now I can finally have spectators watch me flying HDZ as well, initiate it on the bench and the hdmi-out is a god-send during presentations and demos as well. I'll also use it as second display for more spectators during analog sessions. Battery is one of the best decisions ever as well. As said, my Eachine battery is decaying hard. With this display I'll just get another 4S pack and that's it. I can also put that pack in storage charge and care for it - the one in my Eachine just stays there, fully charged and slowly dying from it. When I have larger gigs/events I can also just put a larger pack on it and done. While it appears clunky for a consumer product, for FPV Field use this is a god send.
I would be interested to test the quality of the DVR as it relates to analog video. I'm assuming you can record over the antennas and through the video in jack? It's not much more expensive than an ImmersionRC PowerPlay, and for that small difference in price you're getting a lot of extra bang for your buck. If someone planned on buying a DVR and a cheap pair of bench/spectator goggles this would be an absolute no brainer decision if the DVR quality is good. I also like the external power setup as it's much more convienent for the intended use cases.
The screen is offering a solution for people like me who have had bad after worse experiences with walksnail. While being in too deepfinancially to just move over to a whole different HD ecosystem. After my experiences, I went back to analog with sky zone 040 pro. From what I’ve seen so far this monitor also has HDMI output that you could see it in to your analog goggles and now you can try HDzero for the price of a walksnail vTX.
I like the idea for casual viewing of pilots flying without having to put the goggles on, ie at a racing event I can be tuning into another pilots channel and share the viewing experience with other spectators. Also handy as a bench display while configuring or troubleshooting. It's not unlike the many versions of the portable monitors for analog from back in the day. As far as not inluding analog RX inside the goggle, everyone got such a hard on for fatshark style modules that integrated RX goggles (Sky02 and 03) got little love for years, then the hype moved to rapidfire and eventually fusion as the ONLY modules worth having. Manufacturers move to allowing people to use those modules and now get flak for not having integrated. XD
My girlfriend also known as my spotter for 2 years can now see what I can see. She enjoys being able to see what I see and where the heck I am when I'm 150'+ in a park on a sunny day
Does the dvr in it record like goggles? Is it still better quality to use a hdmi capture card, i wish someone would do a comparison with these screens recording analog... I just got the skyzone M5 screen, very disappointed, it already died...
JB I know this question has nothing to do with downgrading an Iflight Alpha 65 whoop which is a ver:2 and my Tranis qx7 2020 ver; 2.3.5 i have not been able to bind it to my old to my taranis..Can you please explain to me how i can downgrade the alpha firmware version because i have 5 quads that are bound to my Tanis so i don't want to upgrade the y version on my radio just yet..What do you think can do toi downgrade this alpha 65 firmware version? Thank you JB and i made a donation to your site so enjoy!!!
2:25 I think perhaps they thought with the goggles they'd give people maximum flexibility to use their expensive, very good analog receivers - I would've been very happy if they built the analog receiver into the goggles, since I only fly analog whoops or do race spectating on analog. My bigger quads are all gonna be HDZero. But I can imagine how much people would have complained if the goggles on supported its own built-in analog receiver. Here, it's just a spectating screen, so getting the absolute best reception is a slightly lower priority than the form factor. (Also, not building the receiver into the goggles ended up being problematic with some of the receivers people used not working well with the goggles, so that may have factored into it as well.)
No link to the M5 vid in description as promised, found and watched. But thank you for the hold of fourth button, I was getting frustrated and no one else talked about that.
@@VladTepes44 So, if I just set the quad gear to 720p60, then all is good and no blotchiness in the feed. Works for me. I am not a racer. I am an easy cruiser where the latency difference is basically irrelevant.
Its for diong bencwork without having to screw around with goggles. I bought a flysight analog monitor and absolutly love i slapped sone velcro on it and stuck it to the wall and now no goggles and hands free. the genious of this new one is its analog and hd.
The other thing that makes this a weird choice is if you have the HDzero Goggles, the analog module bay puts out WiFi. So, if you want your friends to spectate you can have them connect to the WiFi.
In my experience, the wifi from the module adapter works very poorly. Somewhat convoluted, and not a stable connection. I only bothered with it a few times because of the performance issues.
I made a tidy right angle XT30 lead to adapt a biggish XT60 2S pack on there neatly. :-) looks and feels good, but won't stand upright by itself. I bought it to get started before blowing a grand on the goggles. After watching this I might attach it to my old welding helmet and see how that feels. I have only flown line of sight so far, but will be flying FPV ish using this soon (mobula6 eco and meteor75 pro).
I would love it HD Zero goggles would do anilog. I have 19 kwads and I cant mod them all to digital but for sure my favorites i would but for now I stickn with anilog.
Excellent review, Joshua! Thanks! 😃 About box goggles and binocular goggles, I've never could justify to myself to buy a binocular set... I only have 2 box goggles, because I only see with one eye! (Half of an eye, but details...) So, I don't know. I like Walksnail, I may have the money soon, but... Well, we shall see. 😬 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
hey guys I know that it's not the correct video to ask but cna someone help with question? Can I connect a paralel board on my balance board without problem? It's because my charger is for 8s and the paralel board is for 6s, so I can connect in the balance board 6s and that's cool? Thanks
Although I am primarily interested in the analog features, this would still be the cheapest option for trying out HDZero high definition even with the "pitfalls" that you and others have pointed out. There is simply no way that I am paying $500-$600 for a set of goggles regardless of what they are or the features they have. On the other hand, I would pay $175 for the monitor even if it is not as "good" as the goggles.
I agree they could have made it as box goggles, since the Emax Transporter have some issues and they are more expensive than this monitor. I ordered it and see if it was worth it 😀
hey im having a problem with my dji 03 air unit i have a error and it says ''country code not updated'' and i can onley fly about 200ft away and then i lose Signal pls can you help i bought it from amazon so i can get a replacement but i dont realy want to i I would rather try to fix it. thx! (i will prob be in your live stream so i can ask more Questions)
Is the DJI monitor ANALOG as that is my interest. I really care less about HD digital quality. My goal is for a slight improvement from my analog gear. The HD part of the HDZero goggles is just a bonus...sort of a no cost or "small" cost extra.
Yes, but no benefit to me since my goggles do not have an HDMI input. No, I don't have expensive, high end, analog goggles as I will not pay the money. So, I would need to buy some goggles anyway. Plus, that defeats the purpose of having a viewing device that is NOT being worn on the head. This is the distinction between requiring a visual observer (spotter) and not. I need to get rid of a wearable, headset, device in favor of something that is NOT being worn.
I hate to be that guy, but the background noise cutout or whatever it is, is driving me crazy. Maybe reupload the vid with diff audio settings? Nice vid as always.
It is for me. Regardless of who or what the HDZero monitor was designed for, you just don't see any HD digital viewing device that are cheaper. Some might say a cell phone, but that is not even close to a viable option for me. Plus, a phone is not cheaper, it just does more things. Besides, I have a smaller, cheaper, phone that I can barely see as it is, but then, I use it as a phone.
That goes away after you use goggles for a little while. I had it too, but it went away in a short time. Don't give up on Goggles as there's no substitute for the immersive experience you get from using goggles. It feels like you are ON THE QUAD you are flying! Seriously, can't be duplicated by anything else. Plus, flying with a monitor sucks and will get your quad wrecked. It's just not easy to do and no fun. 🤷🤦🙄
@@KOrnhOliO1 On the one hand, I understand your perspective. Now, imagine that a person could put their head right up to the monitor that is inside a light shielded enclosure, as close to the monitor as you needed and with no light coming in. Sort of like goggles on a tripod. In fact, that is actually another option. Just mount the goggles on a tri-pod and stick one's head right up to the goggles. So, what is the difference. Not much really, if any. I believe that I can get the same effect as goggles with something that is NOT worn on my head. Recall the first cameras where the photographer stuck his head under a black cloth and right up to the camera as close as he needed. Then, we each have different needs. Now, let's consider what a real pilot, in a real plane, sees... a windshield, a wall of instruments, the co-pilot (if there is one) and anything else in the cockpit. Is the pilot "immersed" in the experience? There is no airplane or helicopter that I can think of that has tunnel vision immersion.
All these companies other than DJI come out with products that lack finesse in their design, they only think of the function but their finished products always look like their are manufactured with 3D printers, there is no design or aesthetic to speak of. Like I want to explore other brands but can I have something that’s not ugly at least
Aesthetics is totally irrelevant to me as long as it works. It could be raw electronics if it works and the price is right. I am a form FOLLOWS function type of guy. If it doesn't work for me, then pretty just doesn't matter. I also do not like to pay exorbitant prices when there is a more cost effective option. Yep, that is one reason that I am all analog. Any digital is simply not worth the cost in my opinion. Plus, I don't need digital for the piloting feed and I don't post the video.
Well I guess it is for people like me that simply cannot get along with wearing goggles. Just because your preference is goggles, does not mean that is the same for everybody. there are a few of us that still prefer to use a screen attached to our transmitter. To have a hd monitor with built in hd receiver is a great idea for those that have been stuck with using analog simply because an all in one solution like this was not available. Though whether or not a product like this makes good business sense i am not sure - are there really enough people out there with a use for this to make it a viable product?
It's literally just a ride along screen and at that price I think I would get the goggles with the screen the disconnects I mean it's at that price point it's just it's just not for me I have two analog screens I use them quite often especially when working on this things but I got those for like 30 40 bucks
I guess it depends on your needs and how much "immersion" you want. I may end up just using the monitor from my Viper goggles and be done with it for now. Thing is, I am moving away from ANY head mounted device (goggles) in favor of a tri-pod mounted set up, so any and all goggles are simply out of the question. Since I am not a stunt pilot or racer and I don't care that much about "fully immersed", my needs are different. Even though I mostly want the analog de-interlacing feature, I have yet to see an HD digital viewing device for that price.
Great content, interesting video, thank you. But the audio quality is shocking. I guess this is what is might be like to have tinnitus. Take this as constructive feedback so it does not happen again ;-)
Yes, someone on here replied that the HDZero can be set to 720p60 so that would resolve the "dropped frame" issue and provide smooth video. Since I don't race and don't do stunts, I can live with slightly increased latency. You know, it is interesting that reviewers seem to have a particular bias where they show something as a negative, when it is only a negative for some folks. They don't seem to say how that feature might be just fine or even preferred by others.
Who is this monitor for? Well, ME. First, I am ALL analog and my primary interest is in the analog de-interlacer and enhancement features. I use box goggles because my eyes (or brain) does not full integrate the 2 images and I see a double overlay when using any type of binoculars viewing device even binoculars. Now, get pretty decent analog video anyway, but like to have the de-interlacer. I have been working on how to get the HDZero analog de-interlacer module onto something that I can use without buying expensive goggles (of any type). There is a mod for my Eachine EV800D goggles to wire in an adapter to use those analog monitors for HD goggles. But, I would still need a receiver to plug in and the screen would just be the analog EV800D screen. Yes, this setup still costs more than $200 and I have to make it work. So, my use is primarily a decent analog monitor. The HDZero side of it is just a bonus since I have no HD digital gear. However, with this monitor, I might be tempted to put together an HDZero quad. Hmm. Interesting and the price is right.
@@ferocious_r That I’ll have to reserve judgement on, but sensitivity can also mean noise. The standard analog setup is an Omni and a patch, this would be one or the other. Don’t get me wrong this product looks great, but it’s designed for spectating races. We need to see how it performs otherwise.
@@hylaride For the omni, I use a VAS SkyHammer dual head antenna on one side of the goggles, so I would need to put this on the correct side or just use two of them. Keep in mind that I fly in a small, open, space with clear RF LOS. I don't do stunts and don't fly around things (mostly). Also, I just fly for fun and never post the video. So, I am wondering if it would really be an issue for me.
Another thing. I am moving from wearable goggles to a ground station monitor for flying FPV. Yes, I will fabricate some type of shroud or shield for blocking light and put my face right up in there where it needs to be. In this use case, the HDZero monitor is at the top of the list largely due to the analog de-interlacer and the price. The first reason is so that I can fly legit and not need a spotter since I no longer have one available. Yes, I have already confirmed, you only need a spotter if you are piloting with a headset. Next, I wear eyeglasses and different strengths at different times (so diopters don't really work for me). The strength that I need in the goggles is different than my normal ones so I have to switch eyeglasses going to or from the goggles. Not so with a monitor as I can adjust how close I am to the screen. The ground station is happening anyway. It is just a matter of what I use for a monitor. For my use case, I have not found anything that compares to the HDZero monitor. It is like they made that just for me. I am the only one.
@@lievenvv Yes, I know, and I do always. I fly in open areas. I am not a stunt pilot so I don't do all of that fancy in-and-around things; just simple flying. Thing is, I no longer have access to a spotter, so that is what I needed to resolve. The ground station resolves this dilemma. Yep, I am fully legit. Yeah, I don't post videos. I just fly for my own personal enjoyment and fun. Period. I have been studying the law and FAA regulations for over 3 years now because I always want to be legal.
@@HarryM-qi6sr I do feel your pain, man.. I fly whoops and tiny micros just because I want to be safe and friendly. Still need to look over my shoulder for police - even though 99.9% of people absolutely love it, including _most_ cops.
