The problem with Lemon laws is the manufacturers have lobbied and lined the pockets of politicians in states that already had pretty good laws and now the laws favor the manufacturers ! ? Follow the money.... Louisiana for example...
@stanmarcusgtv

the UCC governs thru Magnuson Moss - people don't understand that manufacturer warranties are largely efforts to circumscribe what the UCC & Magnuson Moss gives the buyer and much of what manufacturers put in there like venue for disputes is there to fool the purchaser and cannot be enforced due to the UCC & Magnuson Moss

Liz, I think the overall problem is the private equity groups taking over the RV industry. I suggest make a chart of when Thor Industries began buying up Airstream, Jayco, Dutchman etcc and I think you will see those dates match with when buyers say quality began to decline. Private equity buys companies, loads them up with debt, then demands cost cutting. We have seen that in other industries. I think you are also right about lack of foreign competition for these bulky, expensive products.

Interesting that the overall quality of RV’s is related to the price of the components and the materials used to make RV’s. People don’t want to pay the price to make high quality RV’s. So the industry gives them what they want, very cheap and low quality. Not sure why you are so surprised.

Every RV owner should tour the Elkhart factories. We went to Jayco, Grand Design, and Keystone. The only factory that had a tour while production was in operation was Jayco. The workers hustled like they were on piece work, which they probably are. I remember my days of working in a factory. Management always pushed for more production. We just bought a Ford Transit cargo van. We’ll see if we can do better than the RV industry at building a camper.

I worked in a mobile home factory and we made both single and double wides. There were 8 assembly stations from the frame work through final finish. Employees were constantly pushed to get at least 3 complete homes out the door each day. Managers got on the intercom barking orders at people to work faster. Workers themselves were basically casual labor types, no education beyond high school, if they made it that far.. paid minimum wage. They had no future there and didn't give an F about anything, they knew they'd work there a year or two and move on. I felt sorry for those who bought them, probably saw a real nice model home at a dealership all set up, decorated, etc. After becoming interested in RV'ing and studying, I have come to the conclusion RV's are no different in the construction process.

On my trips over the last few years, I've looked at some and they ALL appear to be better built, well appointed, practical, easy to use layouts and features, and not intimidating to drive. I have had a few bumper pull trailers over the years. Including Airstream. About 10 years ago I came across a 1986 Holiday Rambler Presidential 29 travel trailer. I bought it for $6000. It is that last year of the original Holiday Rambler Corporation models. Bullet proof. All aluminum superstructure, aluminum skin sides and roof. Fiberglass end caps with continental kit spare tire. Hiden propane tanks. Air ride suspension. Solid oak interior cabinetry. Looks like brand new at almost 40 years old. One time I forgot a full cup of coffee on the counter and drove away. When I eventually stopped, the coffee was still sitting there intact. They are many very high quality older products out the if you look around. And you can save thousands of dollars. As I mentioned, I have had this unit for about 10 years now. And I will never sell it. I am sure it will be in the same condition in another 10 or 20 years from now.

This says a lot! My wife wanted a 5th wheel camper, but I told her I will agree to get what we previously had, but no RV. After I explained my reasoning, she agreed 100%. A few years ago, we had a 42' living quarters 4-horse trailer with slide-outs. All welded aluminum frame, all aluminum exterior skin and the floor from front to rear was extruded interlocked aluminum (no wood). The only steel was the gooseneck, electric jacks and torsion axles. Built to haul (4) 1,000+ lb horses. We used that trailer many times camping at campgrounds without horses. Could fold in the tack room and use the back as a toy hauler. We pulled that trailer all over NC, VA and TN mountains for a few years, most of the time was towing 2 horses and on occasion 3 or 4. I pulled it from western TN to central NC to get home and see that my wife accidentally left a cup half full of drink on the kitchen countertop, that cup was still on the counter and not a drop of drink was on the counter, which says a lot for torsion axles and a well-built trailer. Of the many thousands of miles I towed that trailer and the countless nights camping, I never had to repair anything. I just done annual maintenance on hubs and brakes, we used it year-around. Camper - My Mother-law purchased a new 35' camper. It was towed from factory to dealership on the NC coast. Towed 6 miles to a campground where it was set on blocks and tied down. Two years later she wanted to move it to another campground on the coast, so I towed it approx. 100 miles to a campground where it was set on blocks and tied down. Now, 6 years later and less than 1,000 towed miles, it is falling apart. Every year she has to get multiple items repairs on that trailer, including rotted flooring, leaking roof, AC unit replaced, water heater replacement and so on, it's non-stop. This is with a 74 yr old woman staying there 2-3 months a year and it sitting (with hvac on, conditioned). I couldn't imagine what a disaster that camper would have been towing it a few thousand miles a year with it falling apart just sitting on blocks! I refuse to purchase a RV of any brand.

I live in Quebec, Canada. Had a Tiffin class A, now a LTV unity 2020. Daughter had a few class Cs, now a 26 foot trailer. I repair RVs. I understand an saw the lack of quality in recent years. The equipment used is still pretty much the same and is quide reliable. The materials used (cheap plywood) and the construction/ assembly is now terrible. At the end of the day, management / owners are responsible for the final product. The problem: extremely difficult to sue them, including the dealer. Since 5 years ago, they have included clauses in their contract that make it impossible to sue. Even the manufacturer has to be sued in Indiana, no where else. Laws have to change to stop this practice. Luckily in Canada we can easily use the Consumer's small claims court No lawyer, 6 months wait on average, 20,000$ maximum, judge decision is final and public. It solves 90% of the issues as no dealer wants his name associated to a public judgment. In the last 30 years, I used it 5-6 times and the seller / dealer always settled before going to court. Courts and regulation are the solution because the represent $$$ for the dealers and manufacturers.

Not only the price of the units but the cost if fuel and the cost of these parks and their entrance fees . The current administration is completely against the RV industry as these vehicles tend to be gas guzzlers and in order to save gas you have to reduce weight and that means more plastic and aluminum and less wood and steel in these units. I had a lightweight nomad travel trailer and it was a rolling piece of crap that constantly was having issues. We looked for 6 months for a small Class A or Class C motorhome. Wound up finding a 2008 Jayco Grey Hawk 31SS with only 7,100 miles 12 miles away for $35,000. The only things I had to fix was a toilet seal( $20) and replace a faucet cartridge ($8). Generator started right up after minor work on my part (spraying carb jets with carb cleaner). It even had new tires on it. Presently I'm resealing roof seams with Dicor(easy job) and replaced the windshield wipers. Oh I replaced the main TV just because we had an extra one in the house. Class Cs are an incredible value but you have to sift through them and look. Watch the front cab leaks. This one had none. As far as RV problems, yes the workforce is a problem. The best quality I've ever seen are Oliver trailers. But they are far too small for many of us. Huge pity, as I would love one, but can't manage their tiny size. 8' wide and another 4" taller and I would own one!!!

Good analogy regarding the US car industry of the 70's-90's. I'm originally from Detroit with family members all working for Ford, GM, and Chrysler. Saw how the Japanese cars just took over market share with quality-built cars to the shock and dismay of car executives. The issue is that they could have always build a good, lasting vehicle, they just saw folks changing cars every 4-5 years so there was no incentive for quality.

I really wish I knew about you last year. I put a $1000 deposit on an Eagle 45’ RV from RV One in concord NC. I decided that was too much for me so I decided on a class c forest River. They said I signed a sales contract so I had to trade the eagle for the class c. It was a used class c. They said that’s the best they can do. Needless to say there were tons of issues with it plus another $10,000 down payment. I literally never used it and no one. I ended up letting the bank take it back because absolutely no one e would help me. I WILL NEVER buy another motorhome. Many years ago I had a provost. It was great. Never had an issue.

I have a 2020 travel trailer that for the most part has been decent, however the window in the slideout was leaking water onto the floor unbeknownst to me and the wife. Having two chairs in that spot hid the issue and upon cleaning up this season, I noticed the floor (OSB) was water logged at the back corner. I get OSB for roof decking in a house as mine was built in 2005 and the wood is in great shape, but using anything but marine plywood or a rot resistant plywood in a slide out is crappy. This trailer is an Ultra-lite so there isn't a lot of wood in it (supposedly)...

Hey Liz, just another day at the hacienda. Your next story should be about the dreaded word going around the industry right now. Cracked frames or frame flex. Would love to see a tour of Liperts frame division and the difference in construction requirements per manufatures frame for Grand Design, Keystone, Forest River, Dutchman ect. As you know we where really headed toward the Grand Design Momentum when we last meet. But now we are looking at different builders since we keep hearing that each one has there own specifications for there builds. Safe and roads Brian and Cindy, "xtreambydesign with passion"

Well all I can tell you is that my old Class A is now permanently parked at a recreation site because even though I am solidly middle-class, fuelling the thing just became too expensive. When your motorhome becomes as expensive to holiday in as hotels, why bother? You can fly to your destination much quicker and stay in decent hotels for the cost of gas.

Well there would not be you trying to get them to do what they should have done with they built the motorhome. Good video with many key points. Personally, I INTENSELY dislike the argument in defense of RV manufacturers that RVs are "rolling earthquakes on wheels". Miss Liz nailed it!! It's not the workers it is management. So correct. I had a boating buddy that upgraded to a new 25 foot family cruiser. We did one of our weekends up the the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. After we got them off the trailers we headed out to one of the islands. Now granted it was a little lumpy on the lake but that means you go slow. The boat might rock and roll but no hard jolts. We got to the island and he opened his cabin door and his galley assemble had totally come off the wall. If I remember correctly there was only six small screws holding it on. That is not workers that is management. Thanks for the update on what you have been doing. Looks like a fun place. Congrats on 110!!

Thanks for this Liz! You may have come across those, even with buying new, where a problem arises, and the dealer says 'we can get you to arrive in about 3 months, as we are all backed up', where even with that, you unit then sits for weeks or months before they get TO it! Or, like in my case, where we have a Tiffin Phaeton, and when I inquired about getting in for an issue I was asked if I bought my unit from them, and I said I bought it privately, and they stated they then won't work on it, even though they sell the same brand in new units! So, anything major, I personally have to drive nearly 8 hours from my home just to get to a location I trust and will work on my our rig...that's ridiculous! I've learned to do many of my own 'fix-it's, even doing my own oil changes, filters and grease jobs, both to get it done at a reasonable price along with having it done quickly! We thought of trying a fifth wheel & truck, but with all the problems I hear of fifth wheels, it's now doubtful, so I'll keep our older Class A diesel coach! I've heard good things about 'Brinkley' fifth wheels, but being new to the market these higher end unit's may be no different, so what have you heard?

I spent my career working in the engineering field. What I am seeing is a decrease in quality across the board. Everywhere I look there are shoddy products with inflated price tags. New homes, appliances, power tools, new vehicles, etc. I heard a theory years ago that while computers and software were going to increase productively there was a downside. Newer products could be modeled to the point where the safety factor could be cut close to zero. Meaning a new model could handle little if any abuse or neglect. Or just fall apart prematurely from normal use. Since I am now retired I like to go to estate sales and look for well maintained older products that were actually designed with a safety factor. Also one cannot not ignore the consolidation of companies under huge corporate umbrellas. It seems like everything is owned by big corporations or hedge funds where stock price and quarterly profits are far more important than quality.

I am a professional mechanic who works in bus fleet maintenance, I do not own an RV, but my parents and a brother have in the past, so I am not a complete stranger to the RV industry. First let me say bravo to Liz for having this channel to educate people. Second, the quality decline is larger than the RV industry, it is affecting the bus industry as well, and I suspect other things too such as the home construction industry too. In the last year I have seen several bush league mistakes on new buses. Simple things like asymmetrical installation of required lights, loose hose clamps, to major things like bellhousing to engine block bolts left finger tight that caused the failure of a flex plate at 3000km, or improperly bled brakes.

Thank you Liz! I’m in Portugal now and seeing so many RV’s from different countries. Most I talk with have no issues and love their RV’s. so yes, competition may force Elkhart into better quality and service. Management is 100% to blame Dealers just as bad to give you an RV full of defects … then let you discover them. You responded to me last fall, but I mentioned we needed some time to actually enjoy our retirement. 3 brand new failed RV’s took a toll on us. Lost camping, sleepless nights and the horror of it all. Not to mention all the money we lost 😔 We’re on RV #4 now. Considering selling it and going in a tent 😳 And want to sue that RV dealer in Ottawa Canada for all the pain they put us through. Our insurance company had 2 inspections on RV #3. They determined it was water logged BEFORE we bought it ! They paid for another RV and are going after the dealer themselves. I’ll make that video for you in April. Buy a bus conversion diesel pusher. For 30K cash, I bought a 1961 GMC bus converted into a class A coach and drove it across the country. The only bus part that failed so far was the alternator, I bought two new ones just to have a spare. I replaced some old parts here and there but I would drive it anywhere at anytime. I would never buy a Rv, especially a new one. They may look great but they’re complete garbage. I get much respect from all the truckers. Maybe some will disagree BUT being the owner of a 4th Toyota, the business model Toyota uses, means you get an excellent product. Like any auto maker when an "ALL NEW" redesigned model comes out, yes there will be some probelms, even mighty Toyota is not immune BUT give Toyota the 2nd or 3rd year and that model will be nearly bullet proof. I am not kidding, one FORD TAURUS cost my wife and I more in repairs than 4 Toyotas combined. So, why cant the RV industry use the Toyota model of continuous improvement???? I have read comments from other you tubers who worked for Toyota...you cannot believe how dedicated the brand is to achieving the highest quality. I know from owning 4 of them. Quality Control is so important. There should be a certification process that manufacturers have to go through in order to get a certification of quality. If that was in place, consumers could look for that seal of quality when looking for a RV. There may be one in place now, but it is a worthless certification if the product is inferior.

It’s really not complicated. RVs are junk. When everyone demands their rv looks like mini version of a million dollar home inside, 40’ long and only weighs 6500 lbs newsflash. It’s junk. RVs are completely custom and built as light and cheap as possible. They change so much year to year there’s no trial and error period. Also when you buy one expect a huge surge of problems right from the start. Warranty issues. Have fun bring it back and forth to the dealer to have more cheap parts put in. Also consider manufacturers know the majority don’t keep their rv more than a few years and either upgrade or get out all together.

I worked for a supplier to the RV industry. As far as workers, we would have a career fair, and get about 38 - 40 interviews from applications. We would “hire” 12 people. By the time we drug tested, 4 would pass. Maybe 2 would start on the first day. This was in the Nappanee, IN area, which is near Elkhart. We weren’t the highest pay in the area, and this hurt us. We had an excellent quality product, and it was used in quite a bit of RV manufacturers. I went to a few RV assembly plants. They were hastily put together, and there didn’t seem to be a focus on quality or craftsmanship. When I went, in the 2016-2017 timeframe, there weren’t many Amish working there. They tended to work in the high-end manufacturers. Hard workers. If I remember correctly, to get Amish labor, you had to have an intermediary (in laymen’s terms, a pimp), and they weren’t cheap.

Trim cut to short, Roof membranes with air bubbles because of improper glueing…And I could go on, n on, sometimes the way the shoddy workmanship is I sware it’s 16 yr olds wanting to earn a buck for next Friday n r handed a tool n told to just go at it 🙄. Not saying all RV manufactures, but now a days, way too many. 🍻

Yes, I agree there should be pride in your work. But there is so much junk going out the door that these workers need to be retrained or fired. Shame on the companies for letting junk leave the factory. Thanks for watching.

The earthquake argument is null, if the industry can make a tornado proof house in Florida and earthquake proof homes in California. Then the Rv industry can make rigs with real suspension and build quality. And the contract people sign are b.s. with regards to repairing

RV prices will continue to accelerate as long as there are those foolish enough to pay the price. That's capitalism folks, period.

I used to work in a modular building business for a manufacturer. The most conscientious workers and those with the most pride in doing a good job were our Mexican workers hands down. I won’t say which were the sloppiest or laziest but it for sure wasn’t those of Hispanic or Mexican descent or first generation immigrants. I am white so I am not playing favorites. That was my experience. What determines a good company versus a bad company starts at the top and ends at the top. They set the standards and the culture of the company. The other decline in the RV, Boating, Sailing, Flying Industries is the great wage gap between wages and the cost of entry. The same goes for sport fishing and big game hunting. Wages are too low and the cost of entry, equipment, guides, outfitters etc is too high in relation to wages. With the stagflation we are now experiencing I foresee a day in the not too distant future where the boomers with the most money who have benefited the most from wage increases, home equity increases will age out or no longer be able to pursue these lifestyles and hobbies and won’t be able to sell these toys for what they have into them. It’s a very sad state of affairs. Go to an off-road, fishing, boating, RV, Air show and look at the demographic of the owners and it will tell you all you need to know about the demise of these pursuits.
