Yeah, that's kind of the point of facts. The more you study the historical accuracies the more you have to disregard the myth surrounding him, and as soon as you do that you see the same pattern with Jesus as with your average con man. All of a sudden he's just a man who conned people in a manner not too dissimilar from other religious cult leaders. No one's disputing that Jesus existed since it can't actually be disproved. They dispute that he didn't have magical powers and that he wasn't actually the son of God. Also, it's a logical fallacy to use the Bible as a historically factual source in order to prove the Bible is historically accurate. You need to use multiple non-religious outside sources, compare them, and then come to a conclusion. A religiously biased person is also very much the wrong person for that job.

@@CriticalRoleHighlights I'd be interested in hearing your argument for jesus being a con man as, given the major faith that grew up around his story and the surrounding evidences, the way I see it he either had some supernatural power or almost all of his story was fabricated by Paul with help from Peter and John because, were he a con man, his following surely would have ended in his death. Also since all historical sources carry biases and so their accuracy must be determined by corroborating the data from multiple sources as well as extrapolating the writer's motivation from both the text and historical context so looking at the Bible and comparing it with other sources (as is done in this video) is definitely not a "logical fallacy" (also throwing terms like that around historical study is slightly odd as so little is certain or singular but maybe I'm missing something, please help). Furthermore, it is probably almost impossible to find a researcher who isn't biased in some way concerning the history of Christianity and Jesus so this research simply joins the larger body of research and viewing that body as a whole is a way of limiting bias and so research by educated religious people is essential for making sure all biases are countered by the opposing bias. I currently consider myself an agnostic if that aids any response to this, please correct any errors in my thinking

He further you go back in history the greater the ambiguity. I have head that in some church he is a saint. I have been told that the Romans fired him because he was star bit cruel even by Roman standards. I am not religious but love the history of all religions.

That's excellent man! People might arrive at different conclusions about what to make of Jesus, but the evidence is clear that he was, at the very least, a real man.

The Ten Minute Bible Hour that is how every one of the conversations started. They say he is totally made up. I agree. Appreciate him or not but to say he wasn’t real is like saying George Washington wasn’t real at this point. Lol

Wow, thank you! I don't write scripts for my content because I want it to feel like an actual conversation with normal words and mannerisms, and part of the fun of that is that it allows a little more wiggle room to just run with it and see what happens. I appreciate the encouragement!

But if I ever start a theology channel, I’ll definitely have to make videos in 15-second-clips, somewhat like Jon McCray (Whaddo You Meme). Simply because of my lack of concentration and getting easily distracted, losing my train of thought etc. It sucks, but hopefully it’ll glorify Jesus either way :)

I don't think they should have named Pontius Pilate in the Creeds. Replace Pontius Pilate with the name Caiaphas and then the Creeds would be more biblically accurate.

Hey I know these are secondary sources but you should read the book by new testament scholar Warren Carter entitled Pontius Pilate portraits of a Roman governor. And a book by another historian entitled Pontius pilate in history and interpretation by Helen k bond these books were really insightful about pilate historical role in Jesus execution and it also proves that the whole thing was a political show trial where Jesus guilt was already decided upon by both Caiaphas and pilate

Roman guards would have been executed if they fell asleep on duty. They wouldn't be telling anyone they fell asleep so the guards may not have been roman

I don't believe the story about the guards as Roman legionaries. Either the guards were Jews appointed by the Sanhedrin or they didn't exist. The penalty for falling asleep on guard in the Roman legions was death. And that justice was not subject to influence by locals and not carried out by the local governor, it was Roman law enforced by the tribunes of the legion. I find the notion that Roman legionaries would have conspired with local Jewish religious officials and agreed to admit to a death penalty offense that they didn't really commit to be unbelievable. It's like saying that during the occupation of Afghanistan a squad of US soldiers would have admitted to smuggling cocaine when they didn't do it because a Taliban warlord said he'd put in a good word for them with the US Army if they got court martialed. It's just not believable that the soldiers would ever trust the warlord to get them out of trouble, and not believable that Roman legionaries would trust the Jewish religious leaders to keep them from being executed for admitting to falling asleep on duty.

Yes, that is all true. He also would have heard about the miracles being performed by the disciples after Jesus died. It would be nice to think that he became a believer, but we have no evidence one way or the other. That God would forgive the man who represents all the Gentiles in the act of sacrificing the lamb of the world, would be extremely profound.

deezynar We do have evidence he became a believer. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church teaches that he converted and that he was martyred by the emperor for the faith. He is even a saint in the Ethiopian Church. Considering the Ethiopian Church was started by St Mark and is one of the oldest Christian churches, it’s logical to conclude there could easily be some real validity to this.

Yes, I've always felt kinda bad for Pilate. I think he was really put on the spot.

The Tertullian claim is interesting. Eusebius isn't in the habit of just making up sources, so there's a good chance Tertullian did claim that (in a work later lost). Where he got it from would be hazier, but it does actually sound like something Tiberius would try, which the senate would be likely to reject as diplomatically as possible. None of that would require a real conversion either, which makes the story less like convenient apologetic legend. The sticking factor, I suppose, would be whether Tiberius would have survived that long. (I'm fuzzy about whether he ever got back to Rome and the Senate during his self-imposed exile at Capri, but I suppose the story would effectively still be true if he sent a letter, as he often did to the Senate, and which would be easier for them to carefully ignore or delay on and not be suspected of treason by the increasingly crazy Emperor!) Worth noting that Eusebius was more in favor of Pilate suffering divine retribution, so his reference to Tertullian -- a source he actually claims to have at hand -- gains more credence proportionately.
