I'm pretty sure the chicken would have been happier if it ended up in a landfill instead of this crime against nature. Whoever thought it to be a good idea to can a chicken/turkey/hamburger ought to be locked up in a mental institution. It disrespects both the food and the entire concept of the industrial revolution.

No kidding. What could possibly justify paying two or even three times more for crap in a can compared to whole, fresh chicken? You can get a whole, freshly rotisserie roasted chicken from Costco for $5.00 and it's freakin' delicious!
If I wanted that junk, (and I don't) The local grocery store has that brand for 5 bucks and a store brand for 3 bucks. Still not cheap enough to tempt me.

Already cooked prepared and cooked meat is going to be more expensive than raw. Even at that where I live you can get a rotisserie chicken with the same amount of meat for 1/3 of the price and you can use it for anything that you would use this canned chicken for.

When I was a kid in the late 1960s early '70s, my Mom would often buy a whole canned chicken and it cost only around $2-$3 or so; and it was always a whole intact chicken, packed in broth, not the jellied mess seen here! She would usually roast it in the oven, or make soup or stew out of it. Canned whole chicken was much more common back then, I recall there were several different brands available.
I doubt inflation has gone up THAT much since 1970, but what I dont doubt, is that the quality of most pre-packaged foods has gone way downhill. There has been some bad inflation, especially now, but what I think is happening; companies are dropping quality in favor of a higher profit margin. Lord be with you all.
Bruh for 17.50 in America you could buy 2 already cooked chickens, a loaf of bread some greens on the side gravy and mash and dessert and youd still be eating much healthier.
I have eaten these in my younger days while hunting in the back country. They were not bad. But they were a different brand. The chicken was intact when removed from the can. Blue Star I believe was the brand
This is a good product, except for the cooking instructions. In an emergency, this can make excellent soup. That's a good reason to keep the bones. It's not $17 if your local grocery store carries it. I wish I had a couple of these in my emergency food storage now that we're dealing with a health crisis. I think they're less than $8 locally.
Sweet Sue used to make a great canned Chicken and Dumplings! Notice I said used to! They cheapened it by using less chicken and appears to used formed scraps instead of real whole pieces used in the previous recipe!
i was also a deli worker at a walmart, and i can confirm that the chickens used in the rotisserie are, while much better than this heaping mess of string and "meat", literal factory chickens. Please don't support Tyson meats by buying those chickens, and check out docs like Food, inc. (on Netflix!) to get a better picture of what's really happening to your food. (Plus, they don't even taste that good. And I hated making them!)
I saw an interview with a decorated Vietnam special forces vet, he was parachuted into a fire base up in the North of Vietnam around Christmas and delivered one of these beauties to the guys at the same time! It was his first tour and he said that they were more interested in the Chicken than in him!

MANY grocery stores, including Walmart super stores sell whole roasted hot and chilled chickens...and they LOOK BETTER and are WAY CHEAPER than that canned stringy mess...
You forget the purpose of canned food, preservation. This would be useful for emergency stockpiles or fallout shelters. I'm guessing this has a long shelf life.
Wal Mart makes those rotisserie chickens and puts some out as "chilled" to take home - right before they hit the sell by date, they are reduced to $2.48, and theres ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with them, pop them in the oven for a few and its good as new. You could feed a group with $17.50 going that route with sides/dessert/soda/etc and not serve a meal that looks like something my cat barfed up...
I mean what's the point? Who is this for? I mean it looks like a disease and is not even cheap. Chicken is generally super cheap. Better to just buy a fresh one and cook it and it will taste better, look better and be cheaper.

(I’ve done it a couple times, not counting sour milk) one question-were the bones soft from being over cooked and how could you pick all the bones out of it to make chicken salad? I wouldn’t use that dog vomit to make anything! I can almost smell the stink of it!
When I was a kid and my mom had a job she'd use this as a shortcut for chicken and dumplings. She must've worked some magic because it was pretty darn good. Probably the salt and pepper.
My dad back in the late 40s brought the Prime Minister home from school in rural Alberta and with nothing fresh on hand my grandmother opened 4 canned chicken and made the whole entourage lunch. She even had the hand written thank you note on his Official Letterhead decades later saying it was delicious and the only home cooking they got in a 2 week trip. My other grandmother canned 250 chickens in quart sealers every year and said the tinned ones didn't taste as good.
The price per can is ridiculous. I could buy three whole fresh chickens for the same price. With that said, its a decent product if you're on a long-term camping trip and need non-perishable meat. It looks gross right out of the can but that's all the healthy collagen that is the result of cooking a chicken in a can. It actually tastes pretty good after removing the rubbery skin. Almost like a rotisserie chicken in that it's very moist. And it can be used in soups, stews, salads, tacos etc.
Why the hell are they so expensive? I can go to a local supermarket right now and get a fresh one for $1.07 a pound, lol. You could get a 10 pound fresh chicken for over $5.00 less. Are people supposed to be storing these in their bomb shelters in case we ever go through another ice age, or some sort of nuclear winter?
When I hear canned whole chicken I think of that episode of MASH where Winchester had the hamper of goodies, shared it with Hoolihan and they both got sick from the canned whole chicken. When you cook a whole chicken you're supposed to remove it from the carcass before storing the leftovers to eliminate contamination. Alternatively a 28oz can of Keystone chicken is only $6.29 or you can catch chicken breasts on sale for 69 cents/lb (or less) and can a quart for $2. We usually make 2 whole chickens at a time, 5lbs each and slice the breast meat for sandwiches for the week, have a couple of dinners with the rest and make either soup with the carcasses and left over meat or chicken pot pie or chicken salad or any one of a few other favorites. Not bad for $10!
I tried one of these when I was a kid, at the time yes it was a whole chicken in a can as advertised however everyone who ate it got food poisoning and they disappeared from shelves for a while after that.
When I was a child (1960s-70s) my Mom used these to make chicken and dumplings. The price you are quoting shocks me. Mama bought them because they were affordable.
For three cans, or chickens you could buy chickens, Mason jars, and pressure canner then eat the chicken, and still have the jars and canner to use. Put some flour and water into a pan, turn on heat, and stir. When it starts to thicken put in chicken, and stir to make chicken and gravy.
This has been around for years. Good for enchiladas, quick soup, sandwiches or any recipe that calls for shredded bird. Was looking for it a while back & couldn't find it. Good stuff. Old people food !
I agree, the price of $17.50 is ridiculous. However I have had this product, and once you get over the expectations of beautiful chicken on a platter it's not bad either. Great when you have no way to keep meat fresh and need to stock up for a long time. Not my first choice for every day, but years ago when times were tough, I received one of these from the food bank, and felt very grateful. Most times food banks don't give much meat because it doesn't store well.

I remember back in the late 60's/early 70's that we would be forced to eat something like this. I think it was food storage that was getting ready to expire. So I remember my mother poking and picking thru the "thing" to get all the meat off it. I actually don't remember what she made with it, just it was in a can and had to be gone thru by hand....anyhow, thanks for the memories...
While it's warming in the pan throw in some rosemary, thyme and a bay leaf. Take spaghetti and break it up, cook separate. Throw in some frozen peas, corn and carrot. Add the pasta while it's al dente and stir through.
These are good for emergency situations everyone. Natural disasters, wars, stranded somewhere waiting for rescue...stuff like that. Not everyday regular eating. I bet in an emergency anyone would be glad to have this as a food option that is shelf stable and safe to eat without heating.
