Why 2D art is so much better than 3D (confessions of a 3D addict)

So I was about to do some 2d studies when a video got suggested to me on RU-vid featuring an artist known mostly for 3D based work. Very good work at that, but it made me suddenly feel that urge to '3D'.
So I decided to stop the video and just go into my 2D sketchy pr0n folder and was instantly inspired.
This video is about the importance of getting juiced up for 2D art, digital painting, the digital sketching, the messy, quick and dirty yet beautiful approach to art that we've all seemingly forgotten in this ArtStation world of Blender, Blender, Blender.... and Unreal Engine.
I'll show some awesome examples of this including one of my favourite artists, Nathan Fowkes, as we explore lush brushwork and simplified techniques.

Your videos have become an invaluable resource, more like this would be so appreciated, thank you for putting the time into these

Thanks man, I hope you're right! some people are maybe starting to see me as a doomer or feel like I'm telling everyone to sell used cars. I just get tired of being hit up by people years away from being at my level, aspiring to get to my level, asking me for advice on how to get there... and my level is shit lol. And by level I mean they want a job or are waiting to 'get hired'. Hope you're making your own way!

Great video. I think the term 'concept artist' has lost all meaning at this point. I see soooo many people on artstation just doing realistic modern day 3d environments and calling themselves 'concept artists', concept art at its core is about solving design challenges not just making a pretty render, what most people are talking about are 'key images' essentially showing lighting and mood, but effectively useless to a team of people that need to go and build stuff for a movie/game. Key images are only part of the job, strong design skills are a must

Studios are getting wise to this though. It's weird, between about 2012 and 2022 you could just make digital art in any form and call yourself a concept artist. I fell for that and used to fail miserably when an un-wise studio tried to hire me and neglected to properly vet me. Then it dawed on me that I really wasn't a concept artist at all. But still would get jobs and fuck up every single one of them. Now I hardly get any work and I'm considering coming back to that same realisation. Although I can design to some degree. But a true concept artist can draw and design anything in 2d. For me it's one of the hardest jobs in the world and when I see a truly great concept artist, it's like I don't even believe they can exist. Coz they're all significantly younger than me. And if I look at it linearly, I feel like it would take me 30 years to be as good as many 25 year old top tier artists.

You are so right. I started with 3D modeling. Although I was lucky enough to learn directly from someone who knew a lot about light, shape, etc., you are far from learning what you learn when you start 2D. When I started 3D I realized that I had to get my eye used to certain aspects related to the shape of objects and at one point I thought I had succeeded. Now I draw 3D objects in 2D and I realized that my eye is still not trained . You simply cannot skip stages. 2D and then 3D.

yeah man, thanks for the comment. I did do a reasonable amount of 2d in the beginning and kept battling with the two. Eventually I realised I just didn't have the time to dedicate to full 2d so went all in on 3d. But boy did I pay the price. Now I can barely sketch. And hell, some people don't even do 2d, yet they want to be concept artists! Some say it's possible without 2d but I really doubt it.
@stefan1977full
@stefan1977full 3 месяца назад
I doubt it too. It's simply about the client's requirements, where 2D is needed quickly in addition to 3D. In concept art. It's the same with jobs in games. You are dead without 2D.

As someone who has been learning 3D, I'm going to learn 2D too ... :) 3D is great for creating small objects... It's fun to turn a cube into a plane or something... But if you want to portray a huge scenery from your imagination, doing it in 2D would be so much faster...

This is one of the most important videos i recently watched. A reminder on really important things. And I was thinking why is the majority of superdetailed "wow-artwork" on artstation became so boring,even though it's technically beautiful.
@AndyWalsh
@AndyWalsh 3 месяца назад
glad it helped! Feng Zhu apparently recently said that 95% of concept art stuff on ArtStation was crap and barely related to design. Everyone is just using Blender.

I love both medium and to they're beautiful in different ways. Working both as a concept artist and 3D artist myself (I started with 2D first), I find that although the messy, quick and dirty digital painting looks more appealing, I'd still prefer a more defined and clear 3D concept piece as it's better for production and communication between both department. The only time where I find quick moody 2D painting is more valuable is in the blue sky phase of a project when you have to pitch ideas and sell it to the client/investors. Also part of a reason why there're so many 3D concept art nowaday is actually because of client requirement, especially in AAA and movie production. In many studios 3D skill is not even optional for concept artist anymore. Maybe the real problem here is that people usually lean too much on either end of the 2D-3D spectrum instead of finding a way to make them work together in conjunction.

It's a weird one. Just about every client I've ever had has hated 3d and sometimes been almost begging me to not use it. And I only use it because either a) I'm lazy or b) client work is so changeable that it's almost impossible NOT to use it. So it's such a strange dilemma. And, here's the other thing, having been working for a client this past week... when I'm in 3d I can literally DESTROY hours and days just trying to fix something minescule. I've just spent the last couple hours in Unreal trying to make a cloud work. Only to fail at that. Photoshop? minutes. But mainly I'm referring to personal work here I think. It's fast and lose and appealing to look at and fun to make. Part of the principle of creating work quickly to get better and to grow your audience.
@Tianzhung.09
@Tianzhung.09 3 месяца назад
@@AndyWalshyeah we have all kind of clients, but as you say, the nature of concept work is that it has to be "changeable", and 2d art is all about commitment and it really hates changes, thus creating this dilema lol. I also made mistakes like you as well, spending hours trying to do sth that can be done within minutes in pts (cables, dust, erosion effect, rain....), this is when I have to firgure out how to use both medium in conjunction for best performance :D

I am still confused what to focus on my concept art lead friend said his AD who worked on Star Citizen and now EA said they are exclusively looking for hyper detail photo real 3d render concept artists.

those are the big AAA companies. Chances of working for those guys are slim. But then, if one is a junior now/student, there's a good chance they'll all be using AI in those companies by the time you get good. So my advice is to forgo job-seeking and become independent. If someone happens to then offer you a job due to your popularity, then cool. But that aside, most artists today are skipping fundamentals completely and going straight into 3D. And so they can't iterate and create ideas/designs.

@@AndyWalsh you know, I was sceptical, because it is extremely hard to create a unique video. 95% of RU-vid is just a rant with no new information or value for the viewer. It is important to hear somebody's point that brings something new to the table. I am mostly 3D concept artist and agree on your point. But I also think that it is time to get more creative in 3D software space to add more expression to corny realistic artworks (most people do)

@@maksymrockatansky well, Oculus Medium was our ray of light but Adobe bought it and that was that. But something along those lines is really the way to go. Have you tried it?

Great video. Excuse the pun, but I think it illustrates beautifully, the difference between AI and human generated art. As a former concept artist and draftsman in movies (Now teaching video game art) I’m starting to see if difference. It’s hard to pinpoint but it’s as if the AI art is too perfect or perhaps ‘on the nose’. Just like the Replicants from Bladerunner ‘More human than human’. For the record, I’m neither for or against AI. There’s no way of stopping it but I think human made art may ironically once again, become a rare commodity, especially with the proliferation of AI art. Time will tell. Keep up the good work.

Greetings Roy! I bet you've seen things people wouldn't believe! You should check out my video on how I made the sci-fi armour. Lots of references you'd appreciate. Yeah AI art is horrible and way too 'perfect'. I kinda hope it stays that way and they don't realise that that kind of art isn't particularly attractive. Meanwhile, loose painterly artists will keep winning.
