This is something I have been dealing with for 5-7 years now. I am on medication which helps me at night. Daytimes are generally ok because I am quite active. I am 62 years old. Unconnected with this I gave up all meat in November 2019 and most dairy products. I also greatly reduced eggs and cheese over the course of 2 years and have been strictly vegan for over a year now. I have to admit that I haven’t noticed an improvement in the condition but it is certainly no worse than it was back in 2019 so that is a positive. It is not always the same anyway as I have better days, even better weeks and then bad days or nights so it is difficult to track improvements or deterioration.

Lack of iodine can be a cause for frequent night urination, if your thyroid is ok then try a drop of 5% of Lugols iodine in the morning for a few days with a small amount of water and see if there is an improvement. Avoid large doses of vitamin C while you take the iodine.

Ultrasonic and MRI scans confirmed on the basis of a super high PSA score of 12 about 5 years ago which has subsequently come down to 8 which obviously is still very high. Sorry you have to deal with this. It is the case that in the lycopene study it stopped growth but didn't shrink size. I wonder if halting progression and prevention are the best we can get from diet that. Maybe there are some more specialized dietary tools we have yet to find. There was a study on soy isoflavones that had some good results above placebo for incomplete emptying -- though placebo did incredibly well in the study as well so there were improvement across the board: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22268969/ . Have you tried some different types of exercise to couple with diet? That Yi Jin Jing study did show improvement of symptoms and I'm sure it isn't the only one that can do it. Best of luck!

@Wakanu
@Wakanu Год назад
Thanks for this report, Mic. Almost 10 years ago, at the age of 51, I had a health crisis precipitated by an enlarged prostate, and involving severe urinary infection and urinary retention. I couldn't pee. I had to use a catheter for most of the next year. (Yuck.) I didn't want surgery or drugs if at all possible. So I determined to find another solution and hit the Internet. I assumed I would find some great supplement to correct the issue. But instead I learned, from people like Greger, McDougall and Esselstyn, that BPH is caused chiefly by dairy and meat consumption. I also learned that there are innumerable other chronic conditions caused by eating animals, oil and other processed foods. (Yes, meat, milk, etc. are processed foods. The animal eats the real food [plants], processes it in its body, and the result is what many people consider to be food.) So I started eating only whole plant foods. According to my docs my prostate went from enlarged to slightly enlarged to normal sized over the next year or so. However I still had urinary retention. It turned out I had a congenital condition called a high bladder neck, meaning the opening of my ureter, through which urine passes to leave the body, was abnormally narrow. My bladder, having been overstretched thanks to the severe urinary retention (like a balloon that has been overinflated but not yet to the point of bursting), no longer had the ability to push the urine out through the narrow urethra. So the damage had been done. Though the lifestyle change seemed to have helped correct the enlarged prostate, it was not able to correct the distended bladder issue. I had to have surgery anyway. All has been well since, and I'm loving this lifestyle. Even though it was not able to completely correct my bladder issue, I am glad I had that health crisis. It probably saved my life. For example, my cholesterol has gone from from 300 to 180 - with no drugs! The cholesterol lowering drug fenofibrate was only able to lower it to 220. (I later found out that, though it can improve lab numbers, it has not been shown to prevent disease!) So I am pretty sure I will not have any problems with cardiovascular disease, unlike other members of my family. I published a book, The Eden Axiom, to tell my story and share the science I had learned in my studies. The book, as well as little truth bombs set off here and there among my family and friends, have converted a few, and annoyed a few others. 😂 I love hearing stories from friends who are losing weight and off medications thanks to embracing healthy eating. And thanks to you for your hard work bringing us solid truth on this important subject.
@marty906
@marty906 2 месяца назад
I want to know more of your story - may check out your book. If your prostate went back to normal, why was the surgery still needed? Which did you get? 56/M here who jumped on the carnivore bandwagon for about 6 months until my prostate got so bad I could barely pee. I asked about enlarged prostate in the carnivore forum and they said 'the problem must be with my 10% non-carnivore food - work on that.' I finally remember what Markus Rothkranz used to say about stop eating meat, and looked up urology guidelines to stop eating red and processed meats. Trying to get mine to go down and avoid surgery.
@Wakanu
@Wakanu 2 месяца назад
@@marty906 Hi Marty. I had a TURP. See my revised and clarified post above for an answer to your question of why I still needed surgery. I would suggest you try going 100% whole plant food. Avoid all animal products and processed foods. If it has an ingredients label, consider avoiding it. Unless the ingredients are simply "rice," "beans," etc! A little salt is okay. If you don't eat packaged, processed foods or meat, your salt intake will naturally decrease a lot. I believe red and processed meat, and dairy, are the main causes of prostate enlargement. But other animal products and processed foods will not be helpful, and may also cause harm. For example, chicken, eggs, and palm and coconut oils are high in saturated fat, which raise cholesterol and promote cancer. Anyway, it's up to you, of course. The carnivore cult is dangerous. They promote a dangerous lifestyle, claiming it is scientifically validated. They typically look for all kinds of excuses as to why health problems persist when eating primarily or only meat. Or suggest some additional supplement, further proving that their diet is deficient. It's like a religion, because it turns a blind eye to the clear data that shows it is unhealthy, especially when practiced over an extended period. One can easily thrive health-wise on whole plant foods from weening to old age, but one can't do that on carnivore. But that fact won't convince the true believers. That said, I recognize that some individuals' health does improve, at least temporarily, on carnivore, thanks to some unusual food sensitivities or allergies. I suspect, however, that those folks could do equally well, and better long term, with a carefully planned whole plant food diet. Trigger warning: My book discusses not only the science of healthy lifestyle (hundreds of references), but also the theological implications. As a Christian I was interested in what the Bible has to say about the things I was learning in my health studies. Does it contradict or corroborate the current scientific understanding? So I discuss those things in the book as well.

Thank you for sharing. As a long time ethical vegan I know not the details of the prostate. However I have always read that lots of saturated fats and animal flesh is not healthy for the prostate or male hormones. If I were male I would ditch animal protein and become a whole food ethical vegan. Witness the myriad of males today with man boobs. Not all who have them are overweight. High estrogens are certainly the main cause, and tons of saturated fats increase hormones. I believe animal ag protein will become big tobacco very soon, but so many humans are habitual addicts and enjoy eating animal suffering. cheers.

He nearly messed up his kidneys too. The one doc was pissed off at him for waiting so long. It was a very painful process he said and he has a high tolerance for pain. My dad drinks a good amount of alcohol because you know wine is great for the heart or whatever 😐. He eats a good amount of red meats. Plus fats. I’m not sure why he goes for margarine now instead of the olive oil. Sorry to say this, but If I ate dairy I would rather eat real legit butter, I don’t get the margarine crap. But he does eat a lot of veggies as well. He’s ok now, but his diet is 60% stupid. Not as bad as some other people that he knows, but not great. He thinks his diet is the best though 🤐. I've had prostate problems since I was 15 years old. I once counted myself going to pee over 40 times in 1 day, despite not drinking a sip of water (or any drinks) for the whole day as a test. At age 30, I learned that Chinese medicine uses bee pollen, so I bought some pollen and ate 1/4th a teaspoon, and I was 99% healed immediately. I'm 33 years old now, and I'll have about 1/4th a teaspoon once every month or so, just in case it helps prevent it from coming back. I don't know why it works, all I know is that it does work for me. I say 99%, because I still get up to pee once or twice before bed. But throughout the day, I have no issues anymore.

I'd love to get better medicos but I don't have the insurance to do so. I keep eating my way and they keep hounding me. I will never go back to consuming animals and my diet of mostly legumes and pulses has saved me from having to take Potassium that is a huge pill and reduced the ammonia in my blood stream. They wanted to give me this noxious syrup that causes unrelenting diarrhea, ugh no thanks. I'll stick to my dals!

As someone who eats at least 2 pounds red meat daily and has for decades, high fat diet I have no trouble urinating. Am the same as I was as a teen. Few vegetables, no exercise except work. Now I occasionally use tomatoes for cooking my ground beef and have put onions in beef stew as well. Commercial spaghetti sauce is full of sugar and not suitable for eating. Home grown, ripened tomatoes boiled with the skins and seeds removed adds flavor to ground beef. Fiber is indigestible, why eat it? Might as well blend up cardboard with your tofu.
@chiyerano
@chiyerano Год назад
The fiber is to feed good gut bacteria such as lactobacilli which helps improve apoB lipid profiles among other health markers and to help sweep waste products out of the body. Plus, meat and other animal products do not protect against anything.
@chargermopar
@chargermopar Год назад
@@chiyerano Waste is always coming out. Why would you say meat does not protect against anything? Eggs, meat and fermented dairy make up my diet. isn't it better to not put indigestible material in your system to reduce the wear and tear on it?
@chiyerano
@chiyerano Год назад
@@chargermopar Because according to David Sinclair et al. meat, eggs, and dairy really don't protect against anything, at least not by themselves. They usually have to have certain bacteria added to them, as in the case of yogurt or other types of dairy, to have any protective qualities to them but seeing as how no animal products have the fiber to keep such beneficial bacteria alive, you end up killing them off anyway if you eat nothing but meat and other animal products and no fibrous plant based foods. A look into some people's colons will show you that while waste may be coming out, not all of it is completely evacuated which is why some people are still very constipated even though they go to the bathroom regularly. One thing I can say about animal products or foods is that they are very good at growing all sorts of cells in the body, including cancer cells.

When I was 21, a girl I was interested in, who was vegan, challenged me to go 1 week without eating meat. I went a whole year. But I didn't really know about nutrition. I dropped from 150 to 140 pounds and lost a lot of muscle strength. It was embarrassing when I realized I was struggling with things like opening stuck jars. I eventually went back to eating meat and regained muscle but also continued to put on weight into my late 30s topping out at 222.5 pounds before I began trying to actively find a solution. I eventually went WFPB about a year ago. I still need to lose another 45 pounds to reach my ideal weight, but the effect on my health has been nothing short of amazing. Vegan diets can absolutely be done wrong, and vegan activists who don't ensure that they educate people about proper nutrition can cause harm to people's health. That's what happenned to me. Maybe I would have stuck with it longer than a year if I hadn't been ignorant. I actually felt great at first, but I was probably suffering from nutrient deficiencies by the end of the year. I certainly didn't know I needed to take B12, so I wasn't taking it. Now I know better. Anyway, a friend was recently diagnosed with Huntington's disease. Maybe you could do a video on that. I know it's incurable, but what role can diet play in its treatment?

Unfortunately, Mic is right. The research does make it very clear that animal-based diets are responsible for the epidemic of BPH and prostate cancer. My doctor warned me just last month that there could be trouble on the horizon, so I've been reading up on this. The British Medical Journal has come right out and said that men at risk should eliminate dairy from their diet. That's my concern: although we eat very little meat, my love of cheese more than anything is obviously an issue. I think my wife and I are going to be moving toward a pesca-vegetarian lifestyle.

Is the evidence saying that bph and the uncontrollable cell growth won't arise if you are wfpb and active or does it just statistically reduces chances? Likewise with hopes for a cure if you already have it?

Thanks for another informative video. Amusing too, and yes quite watchable: if urine trouble, big tomato big prostate , and more. 🙂👍. One food I would have expected to see here is pumpkin seeds: I recall reading decades ago (1970s - yes I'm one of your relatively few watchers from that demographic, sigh, squarely in my sixties: oh well, let us hope most people reach this age safe and sound). Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc which as I understood is lacking in many diets, and is somehow related to prostate health, I forget the details; a healthy prostate has more zinc in its tissues, I think. Zinc is lost in the refining process of grains and that book mentioned some Iranian rural people having a lot of unleavened wheat bread of which the phytate blocked zinc absorbtion. Lycopene being better absorbed from cooked tomatoes, and in the presence of fat (from nuts or avocados, or seeds like pumpkin, sesame, ground flax perhaps) could have been mentioned too. Dr Neal Barnard did point out that for good absorbtion of such substances fats need not be eaten at the same meal: fat in the next meal would do. Good though not unexpected to know that our, well mine anyway, dear Whole Food Fully Plant Based diet helps this issue too. I don't think I have this problem, and my being Happily Vegan Since 2000 probably helps. Thank you again for another very good video. 😊
@MictheVegan

Yeah these are great points that I wish I had time to cover. Dietary zinc for whatever reason is lower in the prostates of BPH sufferers and they excrete more zinc. So yeah zinc is once that should be a focus. Simply soaking and sprouting usually deals with that phytate and the vegetarian gut can digest it as well: ami-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/jam.12204

It's just that I read about the Irianian people in the book as a teenager and it lodged in my mind... thanks for the link. That bread could be like the chapati and roti we have here in India, made from just a dough with water, not leavened nor seeds soaked before. Zinc and prostate often mentioned over the years, usually with pumpkin seeds cited as a good source.
