I just graduated from a BSN program. I am now studying to take the NCLEX. I can promise all relevant critical thinking for nursing derives from A&P. If nothing else, understand it backwards and forwards. Hint: For those single parents and working students out there. Utilize every moment studying. I used to sit in traffic listening to audio lectures between study groups, flash cards, and cramming. How bad do you want it !?!? 😆

@@merlinel3855 As you know: Nurses are trained to implement all nursing treatments. So my advice will be the emotional part of Nursing.. The hardest part of Nursing..unrealistic expectations placed upon Nurses by nursing management. TIP: Keep your license safe by keeping patient safe. Also, you cannot effectively care for others if you do not first care for self. The easiest part of Nursing: Accepting others opinions (whether good or bad) from learning how not to take things personally

So true. We just started our program in January and we’ve already lost about 20% of our class. Most of the ones that are gone were the ones talking about how their A&P credits had “just made the 5 year cut-off.” They struggled from Day 1. Having a solid understanding of A&P will definitely make this process so much smoother 🙌🏾

I'm actually amazed by how many are saying 6-8 hours of studying A&P is too much or not necessary. I'm I'm A&P I right now.. Summer Class 10 weeks. I study more than 6-8 hours a day..I don't have a choice, if I don't I realized I'm not actually retaining the information. I want to learn it to actually learn it, not to just pass the class. It's's a beast! However, I truly feel in the long run it will help me in Nursing School.

Anita Turner EXACTLY!! It's a lynchpin in Nursing School! I am CONSTANTLY either remembering what I was taught in A&P or having to have ny A&P notes as my reference guide. As for how much I studied? EASY 3-5 hours a day. And more if it was a tough unit. I know some say they did it in less...God Bless them... but they are the rare ones. Anyone that **I** know who only studied an hour or two (or hardly) PAID for it down the road. STUDY and don't allow yourself to get behind. This massive study will START to give you a clue as to what you will BEGIN to face in Nursing School. Best Wishes!!

I took anatomy and physiology separated for the first time 5 years ago. I failed anatomy and physiology barely passed with C. I retook anatomy a year ago, dedicated a lot of time and got an A. I took my A&P over a decade ago. I just graduated this month. My anatomy was separate from physiology. We had cadavers during anatomy lab. I bought Snell's anatomy book back then. Like Pharm, it's a memory work, you just need to put extra effort remembering it. Once you remember, it stays with you even if you get waterboarded.

I give it 12-14 hours a day currently because it is an accelerated course and I don't give anything but my best no matter what I'm doing. I took it the first time 15 years ago, the second time 12 years ago and needed to refresh for my own personal information before coming back for my BSN so am retaking it a third time. Because I can. I am getting 100% so far with these study habits btw. The people who are taking this course for the first time, no matter if it's for nursing, doctor, psychology... doesn't matter. You need to buckle down on it, not sluff it off because this is foundational for everything...

So I just started nursing school last month and it is so true you need to know your A and P. Another piece of advice to help everyone who is studying. Review your notes every night. It helps when you have exams and to really understand and remember the material. This summer between my 3 classes we are having 1 or 2 exams a week. It makes my life so much easier not cramming before an exam and I am understanding and starting to think like a nurse. Also basic molecular and cellular bio is helpful. It is what I have my first degree in. So even watching videos on it will help your understanding later down the line.

A&P is so important that is why I still review A&P in conjunction with a disease process. I think a lot of student stress over the fact that they did well in A&P and struggle in nursing. Knowing A&P is super important but knowing how to break the test questions down and changing your method of studying is important. I am going through the beast that is nursing school now. Studying 6-8 hours a day for one class sounds exhausting. I am taking A&P with Microbiology this semester, both with labs. My idea to maximize my time has been to break my studying into 2-3 hour chunks at most because at that point I can't retain more information if I am truly concentrating. I will try to hit the at least 3-4 hours per class that will probably be feasible if I chunk my time.

I have a question Nurse Bass. The cost of my books and materials exceed $950 when purchased through the school bookstore. Most of the books when ordered new, have support access codes. I am paying out of pocket for my education. I am considering buying my books online to lessen my expenses. How important is it to have brand new books. How relevant are the online access codes that come with those new books. Can I be just as successful with the used material?
@mckenna8663
@mckenna8663 7 лет назад
Patrick Brathwaite hi Patrick. I'm a second nursing student, and I too am paying for nursing school out of my own pocket. I hear you buddy. It's expensive as all get-out. this is what I have found so far... I bought my fundamentals book online through Amazon. I knew that that was when I was going to keep. I look for used books that say they are in very good condition and have the access code intact. if you have a question about use the access code I would stop in the nursing office and ask. someone there should have a clue. there are some books that I only rent. for example I just rented my drug guide and pharmacology books. I figure that those are going to be outdated within a year or two and not a good long-term reference. already in second semester, I have had to refer back to my fundamentals book a number of times. So some books you'll be glad that you have bought and keep, and others you're going to need to have updated material anyways so there's no use buying them outright. as for the cost of your books, I never buy at the school bookstore. I find that they are very overpriced. like I say I go on to Amazon. I first look in The Used Books area for a book that is in very good if not like new condition. I look for access codes that have not been utilized, and I usually can save enough over the College Bookstore price or Amazon's full price for new books that it's worth it doing that extra scavenging. best wishes to you in nursing school

Question for you Nurse Bass, if you have a moment. I know this video is kinda old but I wanted to ask you about anatomy. When you take anatomy, do you have to learn every single tiny fragment of the body? I’m self teaching before school, and am not sure what specifically will be asked of me to learn in school. I’m taking anatomy for a quarter system college for mortuary science. How much could they expect me to cram in 10 weeks? I just thought I’d ask because you know about this stuff very well. Thank you!

Fundamentals, with the exception of oxygenation and perfusion, wasnt about AP... it's mostly critical thinking. But the issue is the SATA questions that stomp me about quality improvement, research, etc, etc... but every school is different. I wish that my school focused on AP mostly because I got a B in that class. The math is also easy. But it seems that it just depends on the person as well as the school

I think anatomy definitely helped build a foundation and was useful. At least second semester of it for my particular school, but I'm not sure this was such a big impact on my program.

@crazy808ish

What kind of A&P class did you have that was 300 slides long or took 6-7 hours daily to study? If I spent that much time on it I'd know the entire textbook word for word! It would probably be more efficient to skip class at that rate, too.

Doing 16 credit hours this upcoming fall for prerequisites, working 10 hrs a week at a restaurant to keep some money for transportation, and really considering doing CNA class for 24 hrs a week. (one of my prerequisites is A&P). Am I putting too much on my plate all at once? I really appreciate your videos. Thanks for your advice throughout your nursing school and career.

p.s, the CNA would only be for 2 months, and would start around midterms. Also, many of my prerequisites are online, and I would say I have good time management and study skills
@lawson9780
@lawson9780 7 лет назад
I would hold off on the CNA class. You really need to get good grades in your pre-reqs, and unfortunately having the CNA stuff on top of those pre-req classes might interfere with those grades. That is just my opinion, especially taking 16 credit hours. It is great you are so motivated!
@mckenna8663
@mckenna8663 7 лет назад
Brianna Borst hmmmmmm...tough one. there is definitely an advantage in nursing school to those who have worked in the medical Arena. those who have spent time working as a CNA or a tech do you have an advantage in nursing school. it's not a requirement, and there are people in nursing school doing it without already being some sort of a medical worker. so going for your CNA might help, but it's also going to extend the time that it takes to get through school. also just taking the CNA classes and not going through to working as a CNA is really not going to do you all that well for what it will cost you in time and money. also, as someone else mentioned, it might take away from the time you have to study for your prereqs. what matters most in getting in to nursing is passing the TEAS test with a high score. if doing any of the studying for being a CNA gets in the way of your other prereqs, then it's not worth it. there's no easy answer on this one. it's one that you're going to have to weigh and find out which is worth it to you. by the way, after you pass your first semester in nursing school, and for us that meant Fundamentals of Nursing med-surg 1 skills lab and clinicals, many states will allow you to take the CNA certification test automatically. if you're going in the nursing direction, you might find that your time in CNA training wasn't worth it in the long run; especially if you're just taking those classes and not planning on actually working as a CNA. I hope this has given you something to think about

Any experience with Portage Learning? I took both A&Ps over 10 years ago. One of the schools I'm looking at does not have a shelf life requirement on prereqs, but I want to retake them. Other schools said they will accept them. If this were my first time through A&P, I would probably go the in-person route, but I really need refresher more than anything.

If course registration is still open at your school, check on ratemyprofessor.com and make sure that you have a teacher with a pretty good rating if possible. A&P can be difficult enough so try to avoid a not so great teacher. I suggest recording each lecture and going home and looking over your notes each day to soak in the information. For quizzes and tests, try to study an hour or two a day for a week leading up to the exam. You won't be as stressed or freaking out if you break it down into small bits. This is what I did and I ended up with an A in both A&P 1 and 2. Good luck, you can do this, you just have to want it! Time management is absolutely key. It's not that the material is always necessarily hard, it's just that it can be a lot sometimes.

Yes sir! Microbiology being one of them. But I knew what needed to take precedence. Did what I had to to make A grades in those other classes, but I didn't store that information long term. That A&P however, I knew how important it was, so I placed much more emphasis on the study and retention of knoweledge for the long-term. :D

Hey quick question..so I've been hearing this a couple of times...people keep warning me that the maximum hours a person should work a week is like 20!! That's pretty tough if you're responsible for other people's well being! So what do u think bro? Can you please make a video on that. And I also heard some nursing prog don't accept u if they know you work a lot of hours a week! Is that true?

Ashley Campos I discovered Brad's videos a couple years ago. At that time, I was just starting back into college. My hope was that I was going to go into registration at a local hospital, and maybe someday advance to surgical scheduling. Then someone told me that I should be going for my CMA, and I planned to give that a chance. All the while, I was watching Brad's videos and dreaming that one day I might be able to be half as good as him in my own field. But then, kind-of with his inspiration, I decided to give the TEAS test a try. Just in case. I had worked so hard up to that point that I had all my pre-reqs done... and this was sort-of a "shooting for the stars" chance. I gave myself one shot to do it and then I was going to retreat back into my previous plans. Well, all my hard work paid off. I ended up scoring a 94.5% on theTEAS, and am now in my second semester of nursing school. Yes, I sort-of owe it to Brad and his videos.

Because they slack off in A&P? I disagree, I think it's because you have and are expected to know almost EVERYTHING. Oh, update: finished my 2nd semester this Spring and heading into 3rd semester in the Fall. Over the summer, I am doing extra clinicals for the experience in my ADN school while also starting work on my BSN another school... Pretty sure I made a grave mistake and bit more than I can chew...

Starting school in September and I got my book list and one of them is an A&P book. So excited! :D But seriously though 6-8 hours? A day? T.T What time do I have to study microbiology, statistics and the rest of the subjects I'm gonna be doing? Classes end at five and even if I started right away...I wouldn't finish until 1 the next morning. Expecting tests every week so still gonna study like mad but 6-8 hours on one subject is freaking overkill! Still excited though!😄

Sally Winston hey Sally it's one month after you wrote your post, and I hope you're doing well. I would say I am studied 3 to 5 hours a day on anatomy and physiology. I took microbiology in a different semester and that was also about 3 to 5 hours a day for me. for that class it might have been a shorter study time he had I not had a professor with a very heavy accent. Anatomy physiology, microbiology, and statistics all in one semester. girl that is murder. God bless you on that one. I hope you're holding up. whatever time you can give to each class will pay off in the end. I am now in my second semester of nursing school, and there is not one student I have met who feels that any time they spent studying anatomy and physiology was a waste. In fact, just the opposite. everyone is scrambling to review their notes from AP. and you can tell who really paid attention and who didn't. those folks that did great in anatomy and physiology are soaring past those who did not. for me, I enjoyed microbiology once I got into it. but it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. and I wish I could help you I giving you a video channel that helped me through microbiology. Sadly I never found one that was all that great. I'd have to find videos here in there to help me out. but mostly microbiology was on my own. BUT!!! I CAN help you out with anatomy and physiology. this response is long enough that I'm not going to go into great details, but I'm just going to tell you that the Wendy Riggs Channel was a lifesaver in anatomy and physiology. I owe that woman my life in gratitude. not only did she get me through, but I got A's in both classes. check her Channel out. anyway. been chatting enough. best wishes!
