I forgot to translate this part, but many of you asked, so here's what kungfu grandpa has claimed to train: Pao Quan, Beng Quan, and Taijiquan (Tai Chi). More background on this boxer Ma Hai that grandpa challenged. He in 2018 criticized a clip of an mma guy blatantly knocking out a kungfu challenger who didn’t know what he was getting into. I might do a video on that challenge match and Ma Hai’s response in the future. So this boxer Ma Hai definitely has maintained a different approach to dealing with kungfu challengers for many years. I rediscovered Ma Hai recently and searched him up on social media. That’s how I found this recent clip from his gym to analyze. I’ll look for clips of Ma Hai’s matches too. That might be fun to incorporate if we feature Ma Hai or his gym again. After all, we just want to continue making martial arts better and more beneficial to everyone who practices them, and Ma Hai seems to have a good head on his shoulder.

I understand his desperation. I am non-Chinese, but, I have had elderly KungFu practitioners literally take my interest as hope and beg me to learn. Their rationale is almost always a form of, “One day our own children will have to go and learn our own martial culture from outsiders.” They’ll preserve it by any means, whether that’s teaching a foreigner all that they know, or fighting a challenge match for it’s honor at 72 years old. Even going so far as to adopt a foreigner and give them their family name. Every culture and sub-culture seems it goes through this, much like the birth rate thing. As the children start being more interested in things that make money (engineering, medicine, IT, etc) more than the old culture, or interested in popular things (MMA, Boxing) or just things with more visiblity and resources (Karate, TKD). Even HipHop culture is going through this and it’s barely 50 years old…

I appreciate his physique and his encouragement for culture to survive. However, kung fu needs modern adaptations in order to become effective. Modern interpretations, such as jeet kun do, shuai jiao, and sanda, are all effective Kung fu forms. I don’t want to say more about this rabbit hole. 🕳️ But the old man needs to be an example of health and wellbeing, rather than challenging someone to hit him because he’s “bulletproof” or so. 1) it is disrespecting elders in Chinese culture. Even though there are some elderly people that are rude, it is inappropriate for a young, pro fighter to hurt this man 2) even if you got a trained boxer who is near the old man’s age, it would be very sadistic in the people’s eyes for a gym to host such a fight between kungfu grandpa and boxer grandpa. Perhaps 3 “exceptions” would be that a) both old men are Chinese , b) both old men sign some indemnity form for protection equipment used, throwing in the towel, and not blaming the gym for their choice to fight; c) the owner of the gym is elderly himself and sanctions the fight It is a difficult situation for this old man who wants to challenge a western martial art. I remember the following quote from The Last Samurai: “The ways of the old become one with the new.” The older generation (and even younger generations that are indoctrinated in the old traditions) are stubborn and stuck in their inefficient and ineffective habits against a *modern trained fighter* (ex. Muay Thai, karate, boxing, MMA, a few others, even Sanda) until they apply their kungfu in the real world or adapt it with other martial arts (and they still must spar or fight with it). I remember seeing Jeff Chang fighting a wing chun guy, but the wing chun guy *adapted* his sparring to modern standards to more effectively match Jeff. Rant over , great video.

I don't know how much protection that head guards and body pads give, but I think they should have let grandpa wear them, and slowly increase the power of the shots they give him, a nice easy reality check, while still being responsible and respectful. If an elderly relative, say 60+ wanted to get into martial arts, i would 100% encourage them to do so, I'd probably recommend muay Thai or even Kung Fu. But what I would have to strike home is that no matter how much they train, their reflexs are slower, thier body is slower to recover, and thier body is more fragile, and in no way should they consider themselves a fighter, and that they should just be training to keep their mind and body active.
@FightCommentary

@legion162
@legion162 14 дней назад
@@gaelr.s7123 I can see this being true in the long term, I was only thinking for many giving him a few punches, just to give him some short term protection to experience being punched but without getting too damaged. My theory/guess why headgear could cause more brain injuries. Without headgear you are more likely to receive less head punches before being knocked out or unable to continue, whereas wearing headgear you will end up not getting knocked out so can continue longer with repeated blows to the head. Don't know if that's right, but sounds feasible. I think very short term it wouldn't make much difference, but maybe over a multi year career of an amateur the damage would add up

If a senior person wanted to continue martila arts while being able to defend themselves, id say they should do more flexibility and strength exercises to help their joints and muscles. Besides avoiding injuries, its important to know how to generate power or movements without harming yourself. A lot of kung fu systems advise using spirals or circles in movements because it overcomes inertia and reduces risk of joint injury. As for stamina, thats something they would have to maintain on their own such as cycling or swimming. Reflexes will decline so its important to have good distance and footwork management, and probably learn tactile reflexes. Which is what tai chi push hands helps with, or what wrestling or BJJ helps with. Also if you are going to deal with street altercations, a senior person should learn how to use weapons like a cane or a baton to help them
@moominpic
@moominpic 14 дней назад
The thing with BJJ and wrestling is the stress it puts on joints. I'm 58 and recently started BJJ. After a few weeks I had elbow pains. My physio asked whether anyone had had me in an armlock. "Yeah, but not too hard!" "Well, that's the question, what is too hard?"

Good video. As a former student of Kajukenbo, Tai Chi, and karate, at the venerable age of 74 I admit my glory days are behind me. I'd love to train in boxing but my shoulders don't have a comfortable range of motion any more. I have good memories of the classes I took and friends I made. Currently, I'm just working to stay in shape with weights and simple aerobics. I can still perform a lot of the movements that I learned in the past but I know I'm a lot slower, hence I carry some pepper spray instead of thinking I could still do a spinning back kick.

I'm 44 now so grandpa age is in sight and I have to think about getting old and staying fit. I trained traditional martial arts for some time, also did Muay Thai. Last year, I started to learn Taiji just for the fun of it. I have no need to defend myself against physical attacks and I know that I'm not fit enough to be thrown around or kicked in the head. I lost half a tooth and have injured a few joints in my martial arts journey. If I had someone older than myself wanting to learn martial arts then I would hope they would be grown up enough to not think they'd need to prove themselves. In my age and above, it's about physical fitness, flexibility and the fun that comes from moving the body. In our western world, physical confrontation is not what we have to prevent or prepare for. It's a fight against sedentary lifestyle, not against thugs. Any movement will do and people who think martial arts motivates them should just do it. If someone trained for 30 years and still thinks he has to prove something, I think they do not understand that they already prove their point by being as fit as they are. But we have to dissuade them from trying to prove that they can win against a 30 year old fighter. That's not what they should think they'd have to do. People who take those fights are irresponsible. And people who insist on fighting are delusional. Combine the two and you get the many hilarious fights on the Chinese internet. Respect to this gym that they didn't take the irresponsible path and got a quick laugh out of this man who apparently doesn't know what it really takes to stay alive in a fight.

This is a great video! It's important to realize that nothing exists in a vacuum, not even marital arts. Everything has a cultural context. I don't know if the old guy ever had any Martial arts training, but Iron body training did include hitting various parts of the face and head. I knew a teacher who trained by hitting himself in the eyes and mouth (not recommended!) In any case, I'm surprised they couldn't do a little light sparring with the old guy, although I can understand from the pro's perspective, that's how accidents happen.

Stay away from sports like Judo that are hard on the body. I train competitively in Japan for judo and I’m shooting for 2028 Olympics, and my body is being destroyed. Everything hurts, and I can’t imagine an old guy going through even a quarter of this especially with the quality of Judo in the USA which is borderline dangerous 90 percent of the time

I would definitely encourage someone his age to work out! I would encourage them to take supplements too, Because more than anything for the elderly, Their bodies are more depleted than anyone else of the resources they need to keep going. So I think it's very important to replenish those resources so they can keep working out, Keep good energy levels and have an active lifestyle! As for the fight I'd never recommend it, But if they wanted it this much, I'd allow it if the opponent was deliberately going more soft on them, Like 10% of power, And it could be a game of who gets more points with hits rather than an actual fight.
