I have a HUGE soft spot for the first case in Ace Attorney because my favorite teacher had us as a class play it to show us how persuasive writing worked. Still can't believe there were two times in this game where Phoenix basically went: "Hey, you murdered someone! And I have the receipts!" "... So not only are you confronting me alone, but you say that this is the only copy you have?" "Yup!" "And you didn't show this to your detective friend or ANYONE else with authority at all?" "Hmmm. The mutilation of Japanese culture into "Japanifornia" or "Los Japangeles" is something that's grown on me over the years. I actually love the stupid localisation choices now, and wish they'd stuck with it in later installments. The writers even came up with a backstory for why Japanese immigration would have caused this in Ace Attorney's alternate history. God I love this series.

@noisepollution4473

They still pretend its set in the US but don't try nearly as hard to americanize stuff in later entries. But Spirit of Justice takes place mostly in a fictionalized country so it's largely irrelevant. Though the ONE case that doesn't take place in that country is centered around a cultural art form that the US doesn't have a good analogue for, so I honestly have no idea what they could have done to Americanize it. Chronicles takes place in the past and stars an ancestor of Phoenix, so it not pretending things are American doesn't actually mess with the canon at all. And so so much of that game is focused on Britain's relationship with Japan and there's really zero possible way to Americanize it as far as I can see. The fact that they managed to keep it up as long as they did is honestly impressive.
@tirex3673

They did stuck with it at the very least up to AA6 (though that one does also take place in part in a fictional country), the only localisations, where Japanifornia doesn't appear, is the GAA games. Which doesn't matter, as those play at the very beginning of the 20th century a bit in Japan, but mostly the UK. Meaning, that in the localisation Phoenix's ancestors moved from Japan to the US at some time during the 20th century.

There's a great moment in case 3 where you realize that you've convinced Edgeworth of Vasquez's guilt, and he's subtly trying to back you up. He can't directly accuse her, but he can keep her on the stand so that you can continue to poke holes in her story. It does a lot to make Edgeworth more likeable (which is important going into case 4), not to mention it's just extremely hype
@albertonishiyama1980
@albertonishiyama1980 7 месяцев назад
Also, it's important that the case3 is totally disconected since that gives edgeworth a enviroment completely neutral to help you. Case2 May and Maya are both daughters of the woman who fucked up on his father's murder case. Case1 are both of his friends he feels guilty towards (and btw, he actually looked up on the case and talked about it with Gumshoe... Gumshoe is constantly calling Phoenix "Larry" on case2 and case3 because he clearly only had the "larry is the one always doing bullshit and in dire situations" description). Edgeworth wouldnt accept Phoenix help without the two helping each other prior, neither would he help in a case so close to him as case1 and case2.

Fun fact, Von Karma's common tic of grasping his arm is actually a pretty clever bit of physical foreshadowing in hindsight. He's actually grasping the same arm that has the injured shoulder. With a little bit of symbolism tied in about how he's still obsessed all this time with the stain on his record. Just figured I'd share that tidbit since it's probably one of the more subtle details a lot of people tend to miss regarding the character. Also, your voice acting for Gant was top notch. Probably my favorite performance of yours in this video, and that's saying something given the great stuff you have in here. Bang-up job. - Quick edit note, I sadly made the mistake of saying he was grabbing the arm with the injured shoulder when that is not the case (the foreshadowing detail is still technically the same, but this is enough of an important distinction to point out the discrepancy I made above). Many people have pointed this out so I felt the need to add this correction. TY to everyone who brought it to my attention!

@@monke12354 I'm not sure that's how left and right work... Like, the shoulder he grips is HIS right. Like it doesn't matter the perspective we see it from, if you were standing where he was standing, and then gripped your shoulder the same way he does, you would be gripping your right shoulder. Unless I'm misremembering the sprite, or if it's flipped in the HD ports or something? I doubt I'd remember it wrong because it's so iconic, but I could be? I distinctly remember him grabbing the shoulder that is farthest from the camera's perspective. Since in that perspective, he is facing left, that would be his right shoulder. Like, grab your same shoulder he is grabbing. I feel a little insane that I'm going into this much detail. But there is a small part of me that doubted myself when I saw your comment and I feel the need yo write out my entire thought process just to make sure I'm not just completely looking at it wrong. This could be a case of that famous meme where the AA characters are repeating a message board post where people are arguing about how many dats there are in a week. Like if I made a fundamental mistake early on that makes me extremely wrong but not in a way I'd notice because I'm starting out from the wrong spot and all my conclusions are based on that wrong starting place. I'm not wrong though, right? Like the perspective thing here does not change which shoulder he is gripping at all, and he is, in fact, gripping his right shoulder? Right? Does he grab a different shoulder during his breakdown moment or something?

Missile passed away at age 10 or 11 in 2018, I don't really recall exactlty. He named his dog Missile as he was a very energetic pup that would dart around the room. He felt it was only appropriate to name him after the Shiba Inu from AA1. That's why Missile isn't a Pomeranian in AA1. As far as I know, the name Missile in AA1 originated as a joke. Gumshoe reveals that one of his secret investigation weapons is a missile, only to reveal that it's the name of a cute police pup and not a piece of artillery.

He's a cowboy because the 5th case was made circa Apollo Justice, by which point they've leaned much more heavily into the "goofy gimmick" characters. Every character needs a dramatic quirk by that point. This evolution in goofiness can be seen really clearly in the prosecutors. Rather than just having other prosecutors, every prosecutor in the subsequent games evolves from having a small quirk (using a whip, drinking coffee) to having entire additional defining qualities (prosecutor + rock star, prosecutor + samurai, prosecutor + monk). The main reason they do this, I suspect, is by giving them these additional defining qualities they can use these in order to easily shape distinct personalities, so they aren't essentially retreads of existing characters who fill the same role in the earlier games.

PhD legal student in Japan here (and who, coincidentally, wrote his thesis on the relationships between Criminal Law and media - including both fictional and non-fictional media, with a specific chapter devoted to Ace Attorney). I very much agree with the video when it states that Ace Attorney is not meant to be taken as satire. Rather, the reason why the game is focused on the defence side is not as a denouncement of wrongdoing by the Japanese criminal system, but as a way to provide an outlet for real-life experiences that resonate with the viewership for the game (and that they cannot directly address otherwise). If we were to consider the viewpoint of media in Japan vs. most western countries, we can clearly identify that the role taken by the protagonist is often reversed in these jurisdictions: American shows tend to emphasise the investigative or prosecutorial side (CSI, Law and Order, NCIS) and perhaps even stories in which a person who does not belong to a governmental force acts as an enforcer for law when legally there is no justification to prosecute (Dexter), whereas Japanese shows frequently portray lawyers as their main characters. Yet, few would dare say that CSI or Law and Order are satirical shows. Rather, they serve as a way to represent some acts the general public perceives as unfair, even when based on law (e.g., someone being declared as innocent because relevant issues surfaced in the chain of custody, or evidence was obtained through illegal methods). The core of those programs is the ever-present duality between legality and morality, and the overall feeling that a legal decision may be at odds with what's generally regarded as socially desired. Ace Attorney serves to sate the same kind of social hunger, but on the opposite side of the spectrum. Yes, it is true that the Japanese prosecutorial system is highly stacked against defendants, particularly in light of its emphasis on confessions and the possibility to coerce a defendant into admitting the "existence" of a crime in exchange for a perceived sense of social absolution or a return to normalcy ("sign these papers and we won't need to detain you any longer" / "sign these papers, so when - not if - you are convicted, at least people will think you're someone decent enough who owned up to your mistakes"), and that these events are perceived as condemnable by some Japanese people... ...and yet, satire requires a deliberate desire to exaggerate, to mock an entire system rather than just bring forward the possibility of criticism and rational discussion without necessarily resorting to a personal attack. Ace Attorney does the latter, and it is for that very reason that issues regarding the burden of evidence are not the only focal point of the game: one may consider the legal issues posed by the second game's last case as yet another example of very pressing question covered by it, and one that definitely subverts the thesis that the game is a mere parody of Japan's courts. In short, Ace Attorney is not satire. It's a game that brings forward important questions for the most savvy viewers, but pointing out the flaws of a system and mocking that system are two completely different things.

So on the topic of Wrightworth, supposedly AA takes a decent amount of inspiration from BL. The story goes that originally Edgeworth was originally going to be in his 40s but then character designer Kumiko Suekane (she drew BLs outside of her professional life) was like "If we age him down, this will become very popular with a certain subsection of fans (aka BL fans lol)." The director decided to go with it. The game got more than enough BL fans that for subsequent games, they decided to consciously lean into their relationship. They even have official wedding ring merchandise based on them.

I think that Lana did know about Mia's death, but Ema didn't know. I don't remember if it was told to us exactly when Lana told Ema to seek out Mia. Ema said she was supposed to seek out Mia "when they are in trouble" so it's possible that Lana told this to Ema before she distanced herself from Ema. So because they weren't that close leading up to Rise from the ashes, Lana didn't tell Ema that Mia had died.

It's touched on is this video, but I really feel like it can't be understated how much case three in the first game builds everyone's characters and their interactions. All of the other cases are personal for the cast and that means they already have a sense of investment to find the true killer, but seeing Phoenix fight as hard as he does for someone he doesn't know is important for building who he is and his sense of justice. Maya also gets to really shine as her cheery self and shows how much she supports Phoenix in her own ways, Gumshoe shows that he's really a good and earnest guy when he saves us from literally being killed, and Edgeworth gets to become a more flushed out character that I'd actually want to see saved from a false conviction. Case four would feel completely unearned without case three laying down the emotional investment for these characters. I really thinks it's not until the next game that "third case syndrome" really starts, with most subsequent third cases being painfully slow and filler.

One more thing about Ryuichi Sakamoto, Phoenix's Japanese namesake, is that one of his songs is actually referenced in the iconic courtroom theme of the first game. If you listen to the song "Thousand Knives of Ryuichi Sakamoto" & compare that to the trial music in AA, you'll notice that the chord progression (& general chill-synthesizer vibe) are very similar to one another. (AA's music is by no means a one-to-one copy, though, Thousand Knives & the courtroom theme diverge from one another in many ways.) I think that anyone who's into video game music should check out the works of Sakamoto & Yellow Magic Orchestra (a band he was closely affiliated with). there's so much amazing, experimental, & influential stuff to be found.

I like to believe that von Karma took Edgeworth under his wing because he knew it would be the ultimate revenge against a dead man: by converting Miles to the von Karma career path, he would effectively erase Gregory's legacy. Then, by keeping a close eye on the young Edgeworth, von Karma would be in a better position to exact revenge on Miles over DL-6 on a much more personal level. He didn't want to disclose this to Phoenix in the evidence room because that would take too long to explain. Which is why the ending of Ace Attorney Investigations 2 is so satisfying.

Quite frankly I would prefer if Mia didn't appear after case 1. Her contributions in trials were minimal and usually made Nick look silly. If the writer *really* wanted to include Maya channelling Mia in the game he should have left that for case 4. Maya finally managing to use her powers and Mia helping take down the man who indirectly destroyed her family would be a powerful moment. Especially if previously Phoenix didn't believe Maya's claims about Fey channelling powers. Also, case 1-4 is my favourite case in the series. At times it feels too long but taking down von Karma is *so* *satisfying*. Also cross-examinating parrot has to be one of the most bizarre and funny gaming experiences I had. Your little diatribe about Larry at the end of Turnabout Goodbyes really struck a chord with me and reminded me, fresh off the ending of Trials and Turnabouts, why I had initially thought to myself "Wow, Larry really isn't as bad as the fandom's jokes made him out to be". Obviously, Wright and Edgeworth's dynamic is unmatchable in terms of... everything. But Larry definitely came in clutch towards the end with how he ultimately helped out Edgeworth's case. And even though it practically doubled the video's length, your analysis of Rise from the Ashes was EVERYTHING. Even just relistening to it, I got newly feral over just how great that chapter was in discussing the corruption of the police system and the blossoming relationship (romantic or otherwise) between Edgeworth and Phoenix. Sure, before the events of case 1-5 Gant opted for just firing and blackmailing people who might rise fuss over Darke's case, but that is because those methods are less risky than straight-out murder. Hearing all of this in a row, I've come to a realization. Phoenix is a fucking idiot in the first game. In all three cases where he's not having his hand held through its entirety, he waves incriminating evidence in each killers face to increasingly worse results. In the second case, he was ready to accept a very likely death sentence because it was so difficult to flip over a piece of paper. Not to mention his go to strategy is to bluff even if he has no idea, hoping that something will just fall out of the sky to help him, which to be fair happens on multiple occasions. Even though said bluffing leads to said insanities such as prosecuting a parrot.

Having played these games for the first time as an adult (literally I started them last summer when I was 29), the satisfying narrative/game elements (music pausing, objection theme, etc.) are just as effective and serotonin-inducing as they are for the younger crowd this was clearly first geared towards. RFTA has a special place in my heart because it was the only case my partner HADN'T played as a kid so we both got to experience it for the first time together (they are the one that got me hooked on these games which are so up my alley I'm almost offended I didn't know about them when I was younger haha). We're currently working out way through Apollo Justice and as much as I still thoroughly enjoyed the more in-depth investigation on the console port, yeah, getting to actually use the touch screen elements to dispense fingerprinting powder filled me with utter glee, like that was already a really neat mechanic and then it became infinitely cooler.

Playing through the Ace Attorney trilogy soon made realize that in the whole series that the bonus episode "Rise from the Ashes" was my favourite story in the whole series. And this makes sense, because it was the newest episode in the series once it came to the DS and I believe that the team exactly knew what they were doing and they wrote the most exciting and twisting story in the series.

I was expecting this to cover all 3 games when i saw it’s length, so i was pretty surprised that it was only covering the first game. gotta say, this video was great to have on in the background while gaming or working on stuff. you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber!

Yes, i love AA retrospectives, and this might be the best yet. I still remember buying this for my DS back in 2005, and I've been hooked on this series ever since, and still play the trilogy every now and then. Also, my birth year is the same as Mia in canon, and the Skye sisters have the same age gape as me and my older brother, which i always thought was a funny coincidence.

My god, you have no idea how hyped I was for this video ever since you put it on that community poll after wrapping DR up. This is the kind of narratively invested analysis of these games I've been yearning to find for so long, I couldn't express it in a simple youtube comment. I can count the number of videos that I feel appreciate the underlying themes and messages of these games on one hand, and I'm so happy to count this retrospective among them. No matter how much of the series you decide to cover, be it only the trilogy or even as far as the Layton crossover, I will be looking forward to your takes. That Damon Gant analysis at the end was phenomenal.

Cross-examining the parrot was forged from pure gold. At first you think Pheonix is the crazy one, but von Karma literally retrained this parrot in case this would happened.

I've been waiting in baited breath for this video's release and I couldn't be more stoked to say it's delivered on all fronts. Ace Attorney is such an important series to me personally and I'm as excited for the following videos as I am satisfied with this in particular. I can tell this will be a video/series I'll constantly return to for when I want to reexperience the games without having the time to replay them myself. The quality of your content never ceases to amaze me!

This is seriously one of the best tribute videos to a video game if not the best tribute video i’ve ever seen. I did not expect to watch all 3 and a half hours but every part of your script was so well written and interesting throughout the entire video! I cant wait till you make a video on justice for all!

It's interesting how they combined Gantz with Manfred in the movie. The movie was honestly pretty rushed, but the presentation was great. The final moment where Manfred proudly stated that putting criminals behind bar is their duty while Phoenix rebuts that finding the truth is more important was very memorable to me.

I totally agree with you about the upscales. It looks pretty at the start, but the more you watch it, the flaws get more obvious. I'll be expecting the JFA video, and I truly hope you'll make retrospectives of the "Apollo trilogy" some day. The final case of Dual Destiny is one of my personal favorites.

Strange to say but thank you for making this video overviewing and celebrating this beautiful game series. I am so excited for your upcoming videos covering the next games as cases ramp up in complexity and character development, as well as further tug on our collective heartstrings! Your nostalgia and passion for the game is practically palpable. Also, great job on the voice acting! I had no idea they were all done by you, until I saw your channel bio (yes I failed to register the "VA" clearly in your name oops). Your emotions come through very well particularly on Von Karma's raw breakdown. It's the cherry on top to an amazing video!

AGHH this was such a lovely retrospective!!! i've both played and watched playthroughs of the first game (and the main trilogy) enough times that it kinda surprises me how invested i am in this series to keep reliving it, but your breakdowns of the cases and the cast, and especially chapter 7 and the clips you chose to accompany that section, managed to put every emotion i feel about this game into words in ways that i couldn't ever figure out myself, and i feel really grateful to you for that! i always love it when something manages to fully remind me why i love something so much, and that's exactly what your retrospective did for me. thank you for all your work on this video!!!

I actually like the hd version weirdly enough. Ace attorney was the main reason I started seriously drawing and this art style from the games really helped me in trying to find my own style. It pivoted me more towards anime art styles and really helped me get motivated to try and practice drawing more. I guess I am just more emotionally attached to this style though I do also find the original style charming. (The first ever playthrough I watched of ace attorney also was in this style so I suppose that has to do with this too lol)

One name pun with Gumshoe is that his English name and title all translate to Detective. 'Dick' is a 1900's slang term for a detective or privates eye, and a 'gumshoe' is also slang for detective.
