I like to use Amelia purely on the basis that I like the story. Just having this unit who has always wanted to be a soldier and fight like her hero, starting out far weaker than anyone else. But then, despite this, trying her best, even becoming rivals with Franz as they compete to be better in friendly competition, and then seeing her grow into one of my best units as she can run in with Franz and defeat all of the enemies before the rest on my units even GET there! The stories we make are often more interesting than the ones provided to us.

Amelia is comparable to the notes my writing teacher would leave on my classmates papers. "Has potential, but needs more work."

tl;dr being an armored unit in Heroes does not mean that it is a good option in her own game

I don't think my mind could handle promoting any unit into a Knight with 4 move. Edit: Three Houses has opened my mind by making every single unit promote into a 4 move unit once, and making Magic users stay a 4 move for 80% of the game.

I understand all your points, and accept them as fact. I also accept as fact that I, personally, like Amelia as a unit, and prefer to make her a General. You have not changed my mindset, but you did provide a clean counterargument that was well detailed, easy to understand, and most of all, polite. For that, I give you a round of applause.

People often forget the satisfaction and positive experience of training up a difficult unit does not mean the unit is objectively a good unit. She's _fun_ to polish and use after putting in the work and dedication, but that doesn't matter in the context of the argument.

Amelia's greatest strength is her aesthetic, especially as a Paladin. She just looks cool. But combatwise, she is just too much work.

Playing through FE8 hard mode with all trainees + Marisa and L'arachel in my team with no tower of Valni made me realize/think a few things.Ross is mostly good and honestly isn't nearly as bad as other trainees. Marisa is just flat out terrible, no 1-2 range on a unit with such poor starting stats is just awful she is worse than all the trainees.. in my opinion. All trainees are very reliant on not getting speed screwed to be good. Ross less so as he has more time to gain durability.

I brought Bord, Cord, Tomas, Est, Darros, Gordin, Norne, Matthis and Radd to FE11 endgame my first time playing a Fire Emblem game. I love awful units.

Amelia is awesome, her speedwings really help out my other actual good units.

I trained a Wendy because I wanted a frickin pink General and Amelia accomplished the same role, I think people defending General Amelia just wanted a "better" excuse as to why they wanted a pink General. Just admit it people, nothing wrong with that, FE8 is so easy that any unit is viable anyway

As for the generals thing though, I do feel like you're getting a bit blinded by experience. Generals are very forgiving units, they can be used to bait enemies very effectively and if you happen to put it in a bad spot, it will likely still survive. Generals are not nearly as good for experienced players, but for a first-timer to the series, or even someone who just casually dips their toes into it from time to time, having a general is a good crutch.

11:47 Giving a slow unit speedwings can at times prevent them from being doubled, though. Speed is an offensive stat for fast units but a defensive stat for slow units.

Unless you're playing like H5 FE11/FE12 (can't vouch for Lunatic FE13/14), having the highest stats at endgame doesn't really matter that much. Enemies in the lategame typically aren't incredibly difficult, I feel like the games are designed such that you're really just trying to get by in the present and you'll be given the resources to win as you go. This also goes for weapon/item hoarding! You'll always get more loot and between secret shops, chests, and enemy drops, you'll get plenty of great stuff to use. The only reason you ever need to win the game with ANYTHING left in the convoy is for a funds rank, and that's only if you care about rankings. Just have fun, and don't feel bad about wrecking the game with the most powerful items and units :)

The only thing good about Amelia is that she's the delivery woman for the speedwings.

There are 5 sandwiches. 4 of them taste good and one tastes shit. If your really hungry, on the brink of starvation, the shit sandwich will taste fine, but the other 4 will still taste much better. The 5th sandwich will always be the worst one, whichever the circumstance.

I'm laughing at the "but that means Gyadaros is shit because you have to train a Magikarp!" comparisons because if Pokemon were measured by how fast/efficiently they can beat Elite Four (without using any developer-unintended skips), Magikarp is pretty shit: 1. Has very shit availability cause you're gonna have a Mudkip to blast down the first gym really quickly, and I think you have to get an Old Rod first before thinking of getting Magikarp (reflecting the fact you already have Gilliam, Franz, Forde and Kyle regardless of route). 2. The games without xp share is an especially good analogy to reflect time spent training Amelia in the Tower of Valni (count how many times you have to block the enemy to prevent Amelia getting overrun so she won't get killed). Switch > change Pokemon to Magikarp > switch to a Pokemon that can actually do damage (like Gilliam, Franz, Forde and Kyle can actually do damage from the get-go)

Funnily enough I tend to not really bond with prepromotes the way I do with weaker units. It just feels like I'm walking in on a character halfway through their arc and that I didn't earn the strength they bring to the table. The struggle they go through early on just makes it more satisfying for me to revel in their power once they are caught back up to everyone else.

I've always had trouble with Generals. They're just so slow. I don't go for LTC, but I can usually finish off most enemies before the Generals can be effective, leaving them xp starved. The only time I managed to have a good general was by grinding him up so he was ahead by 4-5 levels of my other units and he at least was good in a few situations.

If we are playing the game of experience these are the questions to ask: Does your Amelia have better starting stats than other characters? ---> Look at her growth. Does your Amelia's chances at growth make her catch up? ---> Look at how much time required to grow. Does your Amelia's growth take up time you could make other characters do as well or better? ---> With the first pretty much easy to assume, the last two are the answer to why you think the character is good probably. In the game of completion these are the questions to ask: Does Amelia allow you to do things other units don't? ---> Look at her growth How long does it take her to do that? ---> Look at her power How strong is she before doing that? ---> If she did, and she took longer, she'd not be worth using if she wasn't powerful, you would not use her till you got to the point of greatest access. In the game of speedrunning these are the questions to ask: Are her base stats good enough to use her right away? ---> Look at when you get her. When you get her, would it be wise to put other units in danger to facilitate her growth? ---> Look at her growth Is her growth better than other characters that could utilize the same growth at the same point? ---> You'd not want to use a character who can't be used right away if you are running. If a character is sufficient from the moment you pick up, it would be unwise to substitute them. It would be unwise to put other units at that point in the game at danger for her, not that they couldn't do it but because she's not reliable. I am gonna guess in most of these fields she is a no. I am not saying she's bad either but after this it's down not to completion and collection but wanting to spend more time on the game as a whole. Time is precious no matter where you use it. Speedrunning prioritizes use of time in order to complete a game. Amelia isn't reliable or there early enough. Experience prioritizes time in the use of luck. Amelia probably isn't the worst but on your luckiest Amelia run based on what I am watching, you'll have wanted all that luck on another character. Completion prioritizes time in the use of gathering things. Amelia's presence is probably not required to get you to a place of access the fastest. There are other ways to play a game. Like in pokemon you could grind to level 100 in the first area. But should you... really? Think about it... Don't do it... You might even enjoy it that way... but seriously this example... don't. But to say it's a good way to do it, is probably wrong, especially... with this example. And you can really play whatever way you want, but playing in a manner that is not effective and using that as a method to judge a more effective method of playing is not a wise judgement.

I was hoping this video would show up one day. I've always been confused to why people gave so much credit to Amelia considering how hard it is to train her up with her awful bases. Even when I was younger, believing Ross to be the best unit in the game, I never gave Amelia that chance because of her poor performance from the start. Ross at least had the advantage of being earlygame. I think there is one legitimate argument to make for Amelia and in extension, Donnel. Sacred Stones contains a postgame where enemies are considerably tougher and where the units with the best possible stats would shine more. Amelia having more level ups to work with make her more likely to have more variance in her stats from the usual averages so it's more than likely to see her stats be at least slightly better than the rest. Of course this isn't the best argument ever nor do I agree, as normal units are perfectly capable of doing the same with less effort, but it's at least something to make some sense out of for people who genuinely find her a "good' character.

amelia ( General ) + Gerik ( Hero ) = my favorite fronline in the game.

IMHO Amelia simply has to go Cavalier - she needs more experience and in cavalier the additional mobility allows her to reach enemies in every turn allowing her to collect it efficiently while Armored Knight/General creates a risk Amelia will drop a turn of gaining experience and I'm not going to grind/take 100 turns per chapter to spoonfeed her. My Amelias always turn out godlike for some reason but I won't be bothered to change my playstyle for her specifically and cavalier class makes it waaaaay easier for her to catch up.

Spot on - anyone is theoretically usable in any FE game. But the time and effort used to make the "growth" units (like Amelia) can be used to make another unit just as good (if not better), with less effort. Of course, there's nothing wrong with using your favorites!

This video is offensive because it claims that you don't need a superior IQ to train Wendy, which is beyond wrong. I have an IQ of 380, and because of it Wendy happens to gain 300 EXP from every single round of combat. As well as her growths scaling up to 200% across the board.

I'll admit it, when I first started watching your videos I thought the same thing as a lot of these arguments like "This guy has such a hard on for fliers and high movement," but after hearing more reasoning on it and various pitfalls, I completely understand how useful they are

I think the main problem with the different groups of fans comes down to play style. Some people like ranked and low turn count, other people prefer fooling around doing memes and other shit for laughs. I remember one time I was playing FE7, a former friend bitched at me cause I used the enemy mine control glitch on the chapter you got Nino to basically feed the map to her. I've already beat the game before so I see no problem fucking around in later play throughs, but that person was so mad at me for not playing as intended. I've always abused mechanics and glitches as long as its part of the game I see no reason not to use it, regardless if it was on purpose or not.

13:00 I like to give the boots to whichever unit on my team is the "juggernaut" that can easily kill even tougher enemies so that the extra move can help them easily swoop in to save the weaker units in a bind. This usually means they go to someone with high enough movement at base to capitalize and good enough stats to have this role for the entire game. For example, I often give them to Byleth in three houses or Corrin in fates because they usually have some of the best stats in the army and can move far enough to capitalize on the insane extra movement from the boots.

I enjoy the process of grinding for Amelia and the other recruits. To use your four course meal example, YOU might not enjoy the parts of the meal that correspond to Amelia having terrible stats and needing careful protection to level up. But I very much enjoy that.

I don't get why people need to have their favorite units also be regarded as objectively the best. I can admit Amelia and Lyn are ass and I do have the latter carrying around 3 lancereavers at any given moment but I never not prioritize them in my playthroughs cause I just love 'em. At the end of the day FE viability is pretty much just vibes. You make work whoever you like at your discretion. But I'll never go up to the hard difficulty crowd and start arguing for my faves being the best cause they really don't gotta be. The only time viability turned me off an unit was... Clarine I think and her nonexistent magic growth.

General Amelia is still my favourite despite being the worst choice I just like the class for it's animations and having 2 in SS means I can see it more often especially that awesome sword

Hello. I've long understood that Amelia isn't a good unit (even going by her highly hypothetical 10/20/20 averages, she's still only slightly better than Seth), but I enjoy raising up units from the ground-up. It's just a personal preference and how I like to play Fire Emblem, so Amelia's among my favorite units to use. I know a couple of things about efficiency, and I usually don't play in this sort of format. But I still think the video was informative and useful. Thumbs up from me!

Yes, Paladins are stupidly overpowered, Generals are stupidly weak, IS can't balance a game. We get it.

I leveled up Amelia to level 20 being a cavalier, and then promoted into paladin and upgreaded to level 20 and my result was... She was my best paladin, better than Franz and even Seth. All her stats were so high, she has no weakness

Very well done video, I really like Amelia, but it's the same enjoyment I get from using Susie in Valkyria Chronicles, in these games, I just really like having the underdogs rise, and I think the game being as easy as it is gives me the freedom to run General Amelia without much of a hitch. I do appreciate how this wasn't very opinionated, this went over the fundamentals of the arguments, and how Amelia falls behind due to lacking in the ideal mechanics for some of the better units, as well as suffer from joining so deep into the story. Glad my friend sent me here. *Edit* Not the best comparison, because as the game progresses, Susie actually gets worse.

Ewan and Amelia are my favorite characters from SS. I turned Ewan into a Druid because I liked the idea of him straying from the path to practice dark sorcery, and I turned Amelia into a General because I thought it was fun to have a petite girl stomp around in a massive suit of armor. Oh and I turned Ross into a Warrior. Because why not.

I just realized this... Would've been funny if Amelia killed herself with a Devil Axe crit at the end of the video - missed opportunity there :D

She's one of my fave gimmick units. I often make her a General simply to make an S-rank user of each weapon for each class. In her case, S-rank axe General with Gilliam being S lance, and King Fado being the S sword(because why not? The game is over by then)

I think the thing with Amelia (or any ,,growth unit" really) is that some players when used to playing say more traditional Rpgs are used to the concept that units that have more possibilites to grow will most likely be the best choice longterm (even if fe games aren't THAT long) which may also be a reason to dissmiss prepromotes as mere ,,crutch'' characters at best ( I also may be wrong with that opinion, I am speaking mostly from my experience)

To be fair, this is Sacred Stones, almost any unit is viable lol. But in my experience, no matter what class I made Amelia, she always flourished for me, always a solid unit.

No movement quite like moving again, might as well make the Dancer a speedster to help with that. :U But more seriously, I suppose this is as fair a critique of Amelia in regards to taking a traditional approach to Fire Emblem as it can get, since Sacred Stones isn't exactly normal for a Fire Emblem game with the options it offers. My own reason for liking her as a General and taking her endgame stats over Paladin or Great Knight? The Arena, where Movement holds no value whatsoever compared to gear, stats, and skills, and the fact that I'm just the type to advance cautiously in Fire Emblem games either way. Unless I absolutely NEED to reach a location in a hurry to save/secure someone or something of importance, I'll push steadily along with my army to take on the enemy's and route them accordingly; If I must, then I'll consider my high movement options, but then that tends to default to picking pegasi and wyverns, and _then_ the cavalry. I've never felt influenced or swayed by something like, say, Blazing Sword's ranking system telling me how I could've done 'better'. It means nothing to me. If I'm beating the game with no casualties, that's all the happy ending I need to know that nothing of importance was lost. Still, yes, Amelia is horrible by traditional standards; No argument there from me as I'll admit to the fact that she needs more care than most others to even grind her in the tower, as she needs more coddling comparatively among the weapon users to take on the Revenants more by her own merits till she finally reaches a sweet spot to fight with no help whatsoever.

We play Fire Emblem differently. You play to win, I, and I suspect many others, play to be a completionist. I love getting my entire army fully promoted and to level 20. That's how I play. Grinding isn't a necessity, it's assumed. Given that, Amelia quickly becomes one of the best in the game, almost as soon as she becomes a Cavalier. I 100% agree with everything said in this video. I would just like to try and bridge a gap I believe exists between more professional FE players, and more casual ones like myself.

The reason I like Amelia is the tier 3 trainee. It's essentially a spear using Swordmaster and she has an amazing battle sprite. I love that she still struggles to lift her spear when she has 20+ strength, or when a sword goes clean through her for 0 damage and her "armor skirt" somehow protects her
