OMG THANKS SO MICH FOR MAKIN THIS SIMPLE STRAIGHT TO THE POINT VIDEO BOUT WHY I ALWAYS HAVE 1 EAR ALWAYS TURNING YELLOW BEFORW DYIN🙈🙊🙉I WAS AUPER ACARED THAT I WAS DOIN SOMETHING WRONG WHILE TRYIN TO DO EVERYTHING RIGHT!!👍
I’m not sure if that’s entirely true. My elephant ears was like that, there’s always only 3 if a fourth one shows up, one dies. That was my case a year ago until I decided to put it outside. Indirect light, it thrived after that. Moist soil. I just repotted them since it was getting out of hand.
Every time my leaf dies I come back to this video. Idk what I’m doing wrong, I just put it in a bigger pot today and I’m hoping it’s not too big but before I don’t think it was buried deep enough. I cannot keep more than 2 leafs on it at a time and I’ve done everything I even bought a humidity reader and it’s in a corner with my other humidity loving plants with a humidifier always one and i have no idea what other actions I can take. Only thing I can think of is maybe too much light
Maybe there is too much light? I keep mine indoors in indirect light and they do fine, but when I was painting my house this summer I moved them outdoors and they got sunburned (they did not die, some of he leaves are discolored and I'm trying to figure out how to rectify it). Another idea might be that their pot is too big, since when a pot is too big there can be a tendency to water them too much..maybe even a water loving plant like this. Anyway, good luck!
I water mine once a week. I fertilize them using peat coir soaked in water. Use the soaked peat coir water, undiluted, as fertilizer. Or you can use the soaked peat coir to grow the plant in. I've had 13 leaves on mine but mine has never flowered. I recently subdivided my one plant into 2 plants and in the next few weeks they should start growing again.
Ummmm…my plant has about 15 fully healthy leaves from the same root bulb. One or two always dying. Glad I know I can just cut them because trying to keep them alive is stressing me out!
I have two that are getting their 5th leaf and one getting her 6th. But I have heard of the three leaf alocasia curse haha. So anything above three is a gift. lol
Do you have to keep them in pots? I replanted mine in the garden and I didn’t realize they didn’t need much water so I think mine are overwatered but their turning yellow 😭😭
I have a question. I have the pharaoh elephant ear plant. The leaves dropped and dried, but the main stem with the rootball is fairly healthy, looking with no leaves. Will it bloom new leaves?
I have two 4ft tall taro plants, you'll always have 1-3 leaves die off occasionally to feed the main leaves. You can avoid this by root pruning and making sure you have enough nitrogen in your soil, and enougj soil in general to support "x" amount of leaves. My main taro has 11 leaves, 2 of which are dying to feed it and support new growth, which is totally normal! But you can avoid it to increase your leaf count by following what worked for me. I even had to bathe and repot it due to a spider mite infestation and it survived!
Hi! About two weeks agoI received a young variegated colocasia in the mail. One leaf dropped, the other has been curling and is on its way out. The stem is still green, so I don't think it's root rot. Still moist. I did not repot it yet or anything. Should I water it or leave it alone? I know you get leaf drop sometimes due to being mailed and I took a chance, it wasn't that expensive, but I still don't want to lose it. If FEELS OK, if that makes any sense! Oh, should I cut the last leaf off or leave it?? It's just one curly leaf on one stem sticking out of the pot.
Hi! As long as the stem is still green and looks healthy, it should be ok. I would recommend planting it and watering as usual. They're pretty hardy and will usually bounce back. This has been the case with many of mine. I though they were dead but in a month or two there was new growth.
@@LetsTalkAboutPlants So hard to read these plants. You don't water them enough- the leaves get yellow. You water them too much- the leaves get yellow as well. Hard to understand...
Hi! Quick Question: I recently bought the exact kind of elephant ear you had in the video! It had three leaves, and by the time I got to the nursery to purchase it, one of the leaves had died. It was removed, and only had two leaves - one larger and one smaller. Now the larger one is also dying and the smaller one is still dark green and healthy looking. I had a feeling that something was happening to the larger one because when I bought it, it was already much lighter than the smaller leaf. Should I be concerned that there will only be one leaf/stem now?
Hi! When leaves are new they're usually lighter and then darken over time. That's totally normal. With these plants, they go through normal growth cycles, sometime they will produce large leaves and other times just small ones. It all depends on the soil and nutrients. It's normal for the large leave to die and be replaced by smaller one. As long as the stem look healthy everything is ok. What you might do to get bigger leaves is to start regularly fertilizing it. That will definitely help make those big broad leaves that we're used to seeing.
Hi! I made a video that showed the mix that I like to use. See the link here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HAGQ1jO-WLM.html. Just a heads up, it’s ok if 1 or 2 leaves are dying but the rest are healthy. That’s the normal cycle of plants.
Hi Sheldon. I've had this happen to me too, but with the Australian variety. I was originally using peat coir soaked in water to grow my plant in. It was fine for a while but over winter last year started almost turning muchy, thin and pale green to touch. It was also getting less sunlight than normal. Sunlight is extremely important for these plants. I ended up by making compost tea out of random weeds, grass and plants in the garden, soaked in water. I also added some whole citrus fruit, epsom salts, brown sugar and 2 used whole coconuts. I let it sit in the sun, in a container with a sealed lid for 2 days, to ferment. I then watered the plant with it, and all my other indoor pot plants with it. Within 2 days the elephant ears perked right up and looked good again. My elephant ears turned dark green, very dark green actually. My advice is when watering with compost tea, it will stink really bad. Water your plants outside and let them fully drain before bringing them back inside. You only need a small amount of the compost tea for your elephant ears, about just enough to reach the roots. Don't drench the whole soil in it. I need to make a batch of compost tea in a few days again.
But it's my 3rd leaf that's dying :/ It is the oldest leaf on the plant (the most outer sheath) and the other two newer leaves look really good. Will it be ok?
Hi! It's completely ok that the oldest is dying. It's the cycle of the plant. There will always be 1 or 2 leaves that are dying while the others are green. Most of the time, it's the smaller leaves but sometimes it's the large older one. It will eventually replace the large dead leaf with an even bigger leaf.
Right now my plant is about to sprout a new leaf and one of mine is starting to fall over… question tho… should I put some type of support like a plant stake to hold up the bottom part of the plant just above the soil? I feel like if I don’t have the support then the whole stem will fall off
These plants always look as though they will fall because they actually don't like direct sunlight all day. They sit under other tree canopies and kinda peek out towards the light. They're beautiful when they're huge but my plant only grows three leaves and then one dies but I have a friend and her plant has about 5 leaves and they all look fresh.
Thank you for this! I bought one a few months ago it sprouted a beautiful tall new one and one of the old ones drooped and discolored I was sad thinking I’m doing something wrong 🥲
Hi! Do you still have 2 or 3 leaves that are green and healthy? It’s normal for it to have 1 or 2 leaves that are turning yellow. It’s the normal leaf cycle.
Hello! I have a colocasia black magic - one of the bigger leaves is starting to have a yellow spot, another smaller leave is yellowing and becoming droopy :( is that normal?
@@LetsTalkAboutPlants Only one small leaf is yellowing, the other three leaves are healthy (tho one is showing a small yellow spot near the edge). I just spotted a new sprout today, could this be the reason?
@@hweeeeeeeee If there are still healthy leaves, the yellow spot could be an early sign that it's not getting enough water. Elephants ears can handle a lot of water. How often do you water it?
Wrong. I'm sorry but as an individual from the tropics where elephant ears are native, they have way more than 3 living, thriving leaves at a time. Your elephant ear plants tiny so you have might not have had enough time to see them reach their full growth potential.
No, I just water very little, all the leaves just went yellow, dropped. It's just so sad, this is my second plant which just acted up, I have now removed all the yellow leaves & have kept the mother stem, which is green as of now. Any special advice to take care of it, we have humid weather & rainy season here in India. Thank you so much for your kind reply, appreciate it 🙏
@@rajeshwarimohapatra7589 when watering, it's better to do a deep water (fully saturate the pot) and leave longer between waterings. Watering little (and by effect, more often) is actually what may be killing your plant as it can lead to root rot. Lots of plants need a period to dry between being watered which they don't get if you're only watering a little more often.
Hi! It sounds like you have a mealybug problem. The best thing to do it to get a rag and wipe off as many as you can then spray the area, include dirt with neem oil. Repeat in 7-10 days and you should see the problem go away.
