Apple and Alphabet are moving into the health care. Both companies have been rumored to be working on non-invasive ways to check blood glucose levels but never bought anything to market. Now, both tech giants are collaborating with medical device company Dexcom, a maker of continuous glucose monitors for people with diabetes. CNBC got an inside look at the innovation behind Dexcom’s latest CGM and its manufacturing process to better understand why two of the world’s biggest tech companies are partnering with it.

I'm Type 1 Diabetic, and if this is true and apple creates a watch for CGM use, it would be absolutely life-changing not only for me but for millions of people who may not know they have early onset Diabetes and could help save lives.

@Tassos Stathakis no they do not. These arr external devices. They ar3 changed for the same reason you cannot use an IV cannula for a long time. Infections could occur and develop. They certainly couldve made these devices reusable with only certain parts like the needle to be change but they want to take advantage of people who need sucb a device. Im not sure about the other companies though.

@lawrencelao1327

@Tassos Stathakis there will always be some form of foreign body reaction to an external device. But something like this is very superficial. It would more likely trigger a subcutaneous infection before a foreign body response. Im an orthopedic surgeon and i know my stuff we put in implants in cases such as joint replacement. A foreign body reponse is always there but it wouldnt necessitate removal of an implant.

@dwalterrealty 5 лет назад
kwyjibo my biggest gripe is that it can’t communicate with the Apple Watch. I was looking forward to that so much, especially since the previous Minimed pump did. I also don’t like how you constantly have to calibrate the sensor (2x day minimum). I get it, medicine is BIG business, but I wish companies would share or license information for the good of the public. I guess it doesn’t matter when literal billions of dollars are at stake!
@tehKap0w
@tehKap0w 5 лет назад
@@dwalterrealty omg, no calibrations would be a godsend. even though i use the g5, there's almost no way i could afford Apple gadgets. I've been through 3 phones and have still spent less than any current model year iPhone. You remind me of a small criticism i have about the g5... So what if we took your desire for it to work with Apple watches and expanded it to work with Android? There is no android app from Dexcom. the workaround is easy enough, i'm using xDrip+ (thank you, Nighscout!!1!) to do the monitoring but the fact that Dexcom can't be bothered to release an Android app is a big middle finger to those of us on budget devices.
@dwalterrealty
@dwalterrealty 5 лет назад
kwyjibo i think it’s more the varying operating systems of android devices. It seems like every phone has a different version! And aren’t they open and completely customizable? I think that freedom prevents android from getting clearance with the FDA right now, as it can be hacked. I’m just guessing, so don’t take that as a fact, just my 2 cents!

Apple prices are high compared to other products, yes. But in all honesty, it's not a bad price if you ask me, I've had my MacBook pro since late 2013 and it still runs perfectly fine today, I only bought the base £999 model too and its done me fine, 6 years and still running fine is £999 spent well, and I believe there is still a few years left in it. If you struggle to pay it straight out you could always pay monthly if necessary. Even Microsoft prices' have hiked up now too. The problem is when someone wants to buy every device at once. Macbook £1500 iPad £1000 iPhone £999 Watch £500 Now that's where it gets way too pricey, often people think they need to update and refresh every year or every other year, and that again would be too pricey, when you don't! like I said my mac has lasted me 6 years.

Im gonna keep it real. Apple 🍎 f**ked up by partnering with Dexcom. They should of went with Abbot. The Freestyle Libre is already next level. That guy in video said it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles. But that is exactly why the Freestyle is better then Dexcom. The bells and whistles make the device worse because its over complicated with information you dont need. The old saying “less is more” is true in this category device. The video shows the Google device that was made and it copied what Abbots Freestyle looks like and same size. So Dexcom and Google partnership is already playing catch up to the Freestyle Libre. Diabetics need just the basic information when the check there blood sugar. Which is “what is my blood sugar right now”. That supersedes everything else. I am a type 1 Diabetic. And have has both Dexcom and Freestyle. And Freestyle is the winner right now. The size is smaller and slimmer then Dexcom. The insertion method is easier on Freestyle. The accuracy of the blood sugar is MORE accurate then Dexcom. That alone destroys Dexcom. Accuracy of the blood sugar trumps EVERYTHING. The old test strip method is better then using Dexcom because the accuracy is perfect on test strips versus the inaccuracy of Dexcoms readings. I hated to see Apple choose Dexcom instead of Abbot. Its a mistake. I wish i could of been in the meeting to see if they even looked at or considered Abbot or if Dexcom pursued Apple or if someone at Apple was friends with someone at Dexcom and pushed Dexcom at a meeting to help out there friends at Dexcom. Theres always a lot of shady dealings in these type of transactions and partnerships that go like this. And the customer or patients with Diabetes will suffer because a product wont be the best version it could of been if Apple went with the clear winner out now. ✌️

I am using Abbott's FreeStyle Libre with Ambrosia's blucon and can get my glucose readings on my apple watch even without the phone. I can share readings with upto 5 people in almost real-time. Can get alarms and my loved one can also get an alarm if my glucose is out of range. I can see my health activity data on the ambrosia.care platform to see my glucose readings, insulin, exercise, food, sleep, heart data in a unified view to see impact on my glucose levels. Ambrosia.care platform integrates Apple health, google fit and Fitbit to one platform along with FreeStyle Libre and a few other devices.

Diabetic type 1 here, this video was made to increase the value and the validation of Dexcom, its almost a press release. Dexcom, Google and Apple...if you guys want make a real money, give us an artificial pancreas. I would pay 10 times more for a solution like that. Someone could pass this messages to the investors ??
@michaelh2716
@michaelh2716 5 лет назад
Cook Medical is working with Pig pancreases to develop the “cells” in the pancreas that produces insulin. Their hope is to be able develop enough “cells” to then inject these cells into a human pancreas with hope that these cells will grow and thus produce insulin. It still the in research stage, but if does work, then many a diabetic could be “cured” of diabetes.

These continuous glucose monitors are usually worn by type ONE diabetics because we can go dangerously low in our sleep. Also ALL type 1 diabetics are insulin dependent, that’s why Dexcom CEO Kevin Sayer was talking about how dangerous insulin can be. Type ONE diabetes is most commonly diagnosed between ages 3-16... I got it at 14. I’m now 22.

And the sets you need to use for it will most likely cost 20 bucks for an infusion at least. Great

The Dexcon sensors can be extended with workarounds (i've worn my 7 day g5 sensor for up to 14 days before). I'd assume the Libre is similar but i've never used the Freestyle Libre. I hope Apple and Google and any other tech giants are not just looking at CGMs but also looking at insulin pumps and pen injections etc. For equality and diversity they also need to look at all manufactures (pimps and sensors) and software houses that can develop learning software that looks at the individual persons responses to insulin, food etc. I currently use a Medtronic 640G and a Libre blood glucose sensor coupled to a MiaoMiao device which turns the Libre freestyle in to a CGM.
