Why Apple Killed 3D Touch 

I loved 3D Touch. I used it on literally everything that supported it

The problem is that Haptic Touch feels less premium and it’s slower than 3D Touch

Controlling the cursor; Didn’t use it for anything else. I do miss that so much

This explains why turning on my flashlight feels weird after I upgraded to the 12 pro max. It just doesn’t feel as crisp as before.

I recently showed 3D Touch to a friend who had his iPhone 6s for 3 years.

3D Touch is literally the only reason why I bought the iPhone XS over the iPhone XR

As an artist, I miss 3D Touch so much. Having pen pressure in my drawing app without any extra items was so nice

3D Touch > Haptic Touch By far. So so far.

I will miss 3D Touch. I’ve been waiting for the last 4 years for it to come to the iPad. Now I guess it never will :(

The 3D Touch made so much sense for the Apple Watch. It’s a great way to introduce a ‘button’ without physically having one. I think it could have been huge had they added it during the iPhone X launch.

One of the most underrated features. An evolution of it would’ve been to navigate deeper and deeper into folders and such without lifting a finger…just sliding and pressing different depths without lifting a finger during each session…kind of like a cursor.

I also noticed literally EVERYONE in my school doesn’t know 3D Touch existed. And whenever I showed it to them, they were surprised. I felt like a hero back then. 😂

aw, i hope they’re going to bring it back in other models. i love pressing the left edge of the screen to switch apps, it’s so handy. and also drawing with pen pressure, my friend was so shocked when i told her it had pen pressure.

3D Touch, especially peek and pop, was one of the best UI improvements I’ve ever used. Even after this video, I can’t comprehend why they scratched it.

3D Touch revolutionized how we interacted with our iPhones. I now have the 12 Pro Max and I’ll tell you coming from the iPhone X; it’s a big difference. The screen is awesome, but with Haptic Touch it‘s significantly less accurate when navigating the screen.

Don't know about you guys but i used to love being able to peek into WhatsApp chats without it being marked as read.

I'm currently running iOS 13 on my iPhone 6S, and it has a minor issue with 3-D Touch: If I tap and hold on an icon (without pressing harder), it still reacts as though I'd done a Haptic Touch. It's almost as if both features are existing in parallel!

Haptic Touch really is inferior! Plus, 3D Touch was one of the best and coolest things Apple have ever done!

I actually am happy that you mentioned the keyboard curser. I had an iPhone X and just upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and I thought they got rid of the curser trackpad feature. I didn’t know that holding the space, now does the same thing. I will still have to get used to it, because it worked better with 3D Touch.

You hit the nail on the head. The problem with 3D touch was, you had to guess which apps you could 3D touch and which you couldn't. That got so frustrating, that we stopped using it altogether.

After the iOS 13 update on my iPhone 7 I have haptic touch AND 3D Touch. Still the 3D Touch is faster and I prefer it. I had something like haptic touch on my iPad 6g so it’s nothing new to me

I upgraded from 8+ to 11 and I’m so sad. I used 3D touch for everything 😭

I’m still using it all the time with my 7. I’ll miss it a lot when I upgrade in a couple years

i absolutely love 3D touch, its really useful. Using haptic touch just feels slow and sluggish, i love how 3D touch allowed you to instantly bring out options and whatever it does at your command and does not have to wait for a specific time. probably my most favorite feature of an apple product

Watching this off a 6s rn, couldn’t imagine iPhone without 3D Touch. Is encompassed in everything I do every day.

3D Touch was amazing for gaming. Pressure sensitive analog like precision for throttle in racing games and ADS to firing in shooters. It’s a major step back considering the release of Apple Arcade. But I suppose the adoption of connecting PS4 and Xbox controllers natively to iOS helped mitigate some of that. But sometimes it just isn’t practical to use a controller.

There’s a lot of peek and pop features that are gone that really annoy me.

Just let me be able to turn off haptic Touch on a phone that already has 3D Touch.

There were MANY more features on why 3D touch was great. You didn't even mention the ability to press the right side of the display to peak into the app switcher. Then you could swipe to the right to bring the last app up or you could press harder to pop into the app switcher. Changing apps is MUCH faster this way and saves clicks on your home button so it will last longer. This was just as great of a feature as the keyboard track-pad.

Although it wasn’t 100% accurate, i still legit miss 3d touch

3D touch was more expensive to make on Apple's side so it was one of their main reasons why they replaced it with a cheaper option, haptic touch. However, because of using haptic touch instead of 3d touch, Apple should reduce the prices of their iphone's that have 3d touch as it is not as premium as 3d touch!

I loved the real haptic feedback when I had my 6s, and 8. I didn’t expect to switch to the 11 but I really missed it when I “upgraded”

I have been using an iPhone 14 pro Max since December. I miss 3D Touch a lot. Especially the trackpad mode like you mentioned is missing or hole worse: activating the flashlight from the home screen has become soundier more complex and lengthy

Most of the time I used 3D Touch for the curser and to mark texts. I would really miss that feature if I had a phone without that feature 😅

I’m one of those people who used it daily. I see that I can’t replicate 3D Touch on what’s up for example, haptic touch doesn’t seem to work like 3D Touch at all. With 3D Touch I could read a message without triggering its “read” check marks for example, so that I could respond later.

I love clicking the lock screen to turn the flashlight on and off without lifting my finger off 😩

I loved to stay popping up and out my photos and messages Just applying force. It was so satisfying

3D touch was by far one of the best features on the iPhone, having a 12 pro now I really wish it was on here, haptic touch just isn’t quite the same

Most of my 3D Touch use is the keyboard track pad and the left edge app switcher. I rarely 3D Touch on apps. Using 3D Touch in those two ways is second nature. I explore the options on apps but I can’t think of time when I use it for that. I will use my 8 for as long as I can because of it.

One of the reasons they removed it because they could make more room for a bigger battery, but mainly because not many people knew what it did or even that it existed.

7:36 you can still highlight text with 3D Touch. I just tried it on my 7+ running iOS 13. You just press a little harder and it will highlight. Thanks for showing me a feature I wasn’t aware of though (highlight through 3D Touch)

I love 3D Touch! It was the main reason I upgraded to the 6S Plus from the 5S. I still use it today after upgrading to the 8 Plus and now the XS Max. I may have to keep the XS for longer now that one of the main features I use on the daily is gone. We’ll see what happens though 🤷‍♂️

I switched from 6S to SE2 and it took some time to get used to Haptic Touch because it’s much slower… R.I.P 3D Touch it was a pleasure traveling with you ;-)

Nice video Greg! I’ve been so upset that 3D Touch is being removed I had always took full advantage of what 3D Touch could do, since the iPhone 6s. This video has kinda made me accept the fact that 3D Touch is being killer Offf 😔

I am still using iphone 6s and love 3D touch been using it since 3 n half years. I was about to upgrade to 11 pro but i am not doing it now because i dont want to miss 3d touch. May be till next year I may overlook this feature and get iphone 11s instead :) It would be hard for me to miss headphone jack and 3d touch both. Love both of them.

My 8 had it n I will admit I didn’t use it as much but the second I found out you could move the curser with it I was in love used it every time I wrote any notes.

3D Touch was very useful. After upgrading from the iPhone XS Max to the iPhone 12 Pro Max it was the first thing I noticed that it wasn’t there. The keyboard features were definitely my favorite and would love to see it back on the iPhone.

The cursor feature was one of my favorite things about iOS! Either way it was a good engineering.

7:37 the trackpad on non 3D Touch iPhones is bad... what if you want go down in text? On iPhone 7 there is no much space under the keyboard ( non ;) )

Im gonna be honest I was really skeptical about the 2020 line up considering I had two iPhones w 3D Touch and used it all the time, but after owning an 11 for almost a year I can’t say i am still worrying about it. It would be nice to have back but I definitely don’t miss it like I thought I would.

I just upgraded from the XS Max to the 13 Pro Max. I love it, but I was heartbroken that the keyboard trackpad was gone. I am literally just now learning you can move the cursor with the long press on the spacebar! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

7:24 you can still highlight text. Just place another finger on the keyboard while holding the space bar and then slide the finger on the space bar. You will highlight text. :)

rip 3d touch, that was my main annoyance going between iphone and ipad pro - ipad didn't had 3d touch :/

One of few features that I personally as an Android user admired was 3d touch it was practical and only mainstream phone with 3d touch technology was iPhone Pst fun fact for you before 3d touch Samsung had a different implementation of a feature similar to 3d touch it was called Air view basically it did what 3d touch does but instead of force press you hovered your finger over for explane a link and it did the peak and pop thing you hovered over it it did the peak and you tapped it it would do the pop just find it interesting how differently the two manufacturers implemented the same thing btw Samsung removed it from its phones (it launched on s4 and removed on s6) for the exact same reason as Apple did with iPhone plus Samsung couldn't make the technology work with the curve of s6 edge and it wouldn't make scene to add it only to the cheaper flat screen s6 but i kinda miss it it was a real show teller to do that.

You can still select text when using the Cursor, you just need to touch with a second finger next to the one that controls the cursor. Sure it’s not as good as 3D Touch was and I miss it every day, but Apple did its best to preserve most of the features. Sry if anyone mentioned this before ^^

I’ve noticed that with Haptic Touch, there are still some features of 3D Touch still there so it feels that 3D Touch didn’t die off completely.

This video is perfect! By the way, I still use a 6s which I bought basically for the 3d touch itself because I was so excited by its introduction. To this day, it's by far the feature I used the most on my iPhone and the one I loved the most, especially THAT keyboard thing. Now, I'm literally afraid to "upgrade" to the iPhone 11 because basically I will be unable to use the keyboard as I did for the last 4 years. Plus, my 6s is still a ROCKET in terms of performance, of course a part from the battery. Is that even an upgrade I ask?

it's the trackpad mode that I miss the most, like you can activate it even when you're in the emoji section but now with haptic touch, you have to go back to the main keyboard to long press space bar and activate the track pad mode. btw I want to point out that you could still highlight words or sentences with haptic touch ; )

I miss 3d touch. I usually played with it on my lock screen with torch shortcut. It feel like pressing a true on/off button 😢

Highlighting text with haptic touch actually does work by tapping or double tapping with another finger on the keyboard being in trackpad mode

It was like a “right click” on your iPhone: super useful.

3D touch set iphone apart from the rest, love the feature and it seems I will be keeping my Max as long as it lasts

I still use a XS and I use 3D Touch constantly. It’s the best feature I’ve ever used since switching to iOS and it’s one of the main features that really distinguished the iPhone from the competition(other than iOS) Haptic Touch is just what android does and has been doing and it doesn’t feel premium or anywhere near as good as 3D Touch. The showcase of it on the lock screen to make the flashlight and camera buttons feel real is amazing and I absolutely love that pushing that button feels realistic and satisfying to push.
