Nvidia took note of what people were agreeing to pay during the shortage so they raised their prices accordingly.

I think the 40 series is so expensive _(and so laughably misrepresented, 2-4x performance and a 4070 pretending to be a 4080 indeed!)_ because they felt compelled to launch a new generation but still have a butt load of 30 series cards to sell after excessive production and the most recent collapse of the cryptocurrency market.

I think it's more that the tech media is increasingly disconnected with the market. They fail to realize that people want performance far more than just paying attention to metrics like "Frames per dollar". "Value" for most gamers outside of the communities is just how much a given GPU can handle be it 4k 144hz on Max Details in some AAA game or something of that nature and the cost largely be damned because market wants to see big numbers which is what Nvidia is very good at posting hence why they have been able to run hog wild while AMD is puttering around trying to focus on a definition of "Value" that doesn't exist in the market.

If people are willing to buy things at the more expensive price, then companies are going to price them at that more expensive price. GPUs are non-essential. They are a luxury good. Supposedly, Nvidia didn't expect the crypto crash to come quite so soon and didn't work to reduce the BOM cost of the reference PCB as well. TSMC N4 with roughly double the cost per wafer of Samsung 8N and potentially higher defect densities while Nvidia kept the die size of the AD102 roughly equivalent to the GA102 will certainly have a hand in a lot of the price increases. Still, Nvidia's management should've had the basic understanding that crypto was going to crash very soon and there was no way they were going to get away with launching at those prices. Intel is challenging them at the low-end and AMD bringing MCM GPUs next month should be able to apply a lot of pressure at the high-end. Reportedly on TSMC N5 and using chiplets, they should have significantly better yields which should net them major cost savings compared to Nvidia. However I definitely think I'm in the minority and that for the most part you are right and people aren't interested in high cost GPUs. I think most people that would have been interested in them would have just bought the high end GPUs at their high prices and probably feel too burned to buy another high price GPU so soon. I'm kind of lucky I have a crappy 1920x1200@60hz monitor at the moment, it means my GTX 1080 and 5820k are still very good for games because I couldn't take advantage of better CPUs or GPUs with the 60hz limit at 1200p so I don't feel the need to upgrade them, conversely I also don't feel the need to upgrade my monitor because I know my current hardware couldn't take advantage of higher refresh rates and resolutions. I have heard from Moore's law is dead quite a while ago that both NVIDIA and AMD had geared up for this model for quite sometime and now. Their plan is to release mostly expensive high end cards each generation and leave mid range and low end to "old" cards, similar to how Apple used to position their product line. Thus, if you want the latest and greatest with the newest feature, you would have to pay for high end products. This allows them to ship less volume but with higher margin.

If you guys could investigate if VR uses far more vram than normal PC gaming I'd appreciate it. I tell people VR gobbles twice as much vram and they say I'm just not optimizing my settings well enough. Medium textures and low everything else in No Man Sky uses 7.8GB of vram. How do I optimize that more? Or is that just because my headset is higher resolution than my 1080p monitor?

@Herkan97
@Herkan97 Год назад
If you know how much VRAM it uses, try lowering everything over and over and see the difference? If you reach the bottom and it's still 5GB+, then maybe it just needs a lot of VRAM. I see that for video games and RAM it doesn't seem to matter, so even if you lower graphics, the amount of RAM used is similar. I don't know how VRAM works, but I know in Siege it tells you how much it uses when you select textures. Your first line is very vague, optimizing settings? Twice as much VRAM? What? If the game uses a lot of VRAM, it uses a lot of VRAM. Vague notions isn't going to answer anything. "This specific game uses 7GB VRAM at medium texture option, 1920x1080p exclusive fullscreen with every other low-high option being low, is this common?" and they could say "For those settings, yes. Lower textures if you want to lower VRAM more". Wth does optimize settings mean if not to lower settings..Reads like a company message. We need to integrate and optimise the settings for a fully featured cinematic experience. You could probably fit more buzzwords. Optimise settings has to mean to lower the low-high options further if they aren't on their lowest toggle. I just put most things but resolution to their lowest and screen mode to windowed fullscreen and stuff works, never cared about VRAM. Can I ask why you care about the VRAM? That's supposed to be in the background for most games, maybe VR is different. I haven't touched that stuff. When I was younger I noticed mouse delay on Windows Fullscreen, but presumably Microsoft has done some stuff and it works better now, I don't know. When I tried windowed fullscreen before, it was probably 2008-2012, maybe it was the older games. I think Warcraft 3 Reforged had a delay, but I also think it had something that got rid of it. Old WC3 probably still has that delay and nothing to fix it or it's a newer modification that fixes it and wouldn't have existed in the past. I haven't played a lot of games over a few years now, the 2-3 years since I started using windowed fullscreen exclusively. Got tired of my past experiences of Exclusive Fullscreen locking the desktop except taskbar and needing to look at the tiny rendered image on the taskbar icons, the little window that shows up when you hover over the icon or most of time I could hover over that window to see the full image and navigate that way. Sometimes that wasn't available and I had to guess my way to crashing the game process or crash the whole PC, fortunately a more rare occurrence. I used to play a lot more games, back when I disliked PvP. Now I almost exclusively play PvP. I still dislike MMO PvP, but most other genres are fine. It's very cheap to play video games if you get into MP games, as you can just play one game for many years. Even better if it's singleplayer, but I think the lack of variety in behaviour doesn't lend itself well to most finding replay-ability in SP games. Or they'd get tired of the story. It can be that they're a speedrunner and the story can actually be a pillar of the speedrunning. Daveeey..It's not an ignored part of the process.

From a business standpoint, IF crypto mining comes back in full swing, Nvidia can take advantage of these better margins with these prices. But if not, they can just run discounts. Vs if they start the prices low, scalpers get the gains from the margins instead of Nvidia. It seems like a decent pricing strategy, just not a good marketing strategy since everyone is upset. If these prices truly are too high for the market, I guarantee these things will go on big sales and we'll all be able to get them at reasonable prices.

Yeah, Nvidia > Scalpers.

Reason is simple, nvidia's greed, I have no respect for them now , earlier I was unhappy with their Linux driver support now I totally dislike them , hopefully AMD can bring something good in November. Also hoping Intel to gain some market share .

Why would they sell for less? If they did scalpers would buy them all and people would end up paying the same price. Its not greed, its just not being stupid

I'm pretty sure Nvidia priced the 40 series GPU for the crypto-mining market.. they can have it at that price point.. I'll just wait it out

You forgot the point where this goes back even further with increases of the 2xxx series and then decided to keep those prices BEFORE all this bs.

Nah they know they are screwed. They're just trying to compensate by throwing a stupidly large price tag on the 4000x series in order to sell more of the last gen and then lower the price of the 4000x to a more reasonable amount once the 3000x series are sold. But hoping that enthusiast will purchase their GPU's that cost as much as some used cars. Fuck them, let them drown in their pool of graphics cards, eventually they'll come back down to reality.

Remember when the RTX line was introduced, and that crappy leather jacket in his fake kitchen said to us: "The msrp on these cards will be expensive at first, but will get cheaper every following generation" Little did we know, it would only apply to the next generation, with nearly twice the price for the third. Can't wait for 4th generation, I bet theywill strive for tripling the price.
