Why Are Thailand Expats So Angry?

Thailand has a very diverse group of tourists and expats that vacation and live here. I talk about my recent experiences and encounters with expats.
If you come to Thailand enough or spend enough time on the internet searching for info about this wonderful country you'll probably understand what I mean when talking about Thailand's affinity to draw in some angry and disgruntled old men.
Why are some Thailand expats so angry?

Something similar happened to me in Peru. My wife, sister, and brother-in-law walked into a small cafe in a tiny town near Machu Pichu. The only other customer was a middle-aged white guy and he just glared at us the entire time we were there. I think he thought he was the most interesting person in the place until we walked in, and he hated us for stealing his spotlight.

Good vlog. You should make more such videos. Also, I think just showing everyday life will be interesting. It doesn't have to be anything special. Just daily chores around the house, eating etc .

They were dissatisfied/disappointed/angry with their lives in their home countries. They thought that moving to an exotic third world destination would be the cure all for what they believed they were missing. It doesn't take long to realize that it was them and not where they escaped from. If you've experienced disdain from older expats I'd imagine that they're just jealous of your youth (comparatively speaking). Maybe if you'd chat up some of these guys they'd be more welcoming. It's unfair of you to put their poor attitude on them when you say that you don't care to talk with them. If you don't want friends that's great but don't whine about it. If you want to be a D, then be a D.
@SavageTraveling

It's not that I don't care to talk to them. I realize I came off quite harsh there. I never turn down an opportunity to have a good conversation with anyone here or anywhere.

It's the old "Thai Visa" site that you get a lot of this as well. I believe many are jealous in general when they see someone who is doing better than them in some capacity. It's quite sad. Many get jaded since the "Thailand dream" hasn't worked out as well as they've wanted.

I'm an American and have been going to Thailand since 1999 including a stretch of living there full time for three years. When I go back now, I stay in my wife's small village in Udon Thani Province. I met an old Aussie there who thinks to this day that we are the only two farangs within a motorbike ride. Even though I'm an old codger, I still get out and make my way around the area which has resulted in me running into many farangs, some are even nice guys. My wife told me the Aussie's wife doesn't want him meeting other farangs because she's hiding a serious gambling addiction and doesn't want him finding out from other farangs. She trusts me because I'm an extremely friendly bloke, not a whinging old British/Aussie bastard who constantly drops loud f-bombs over the price of a Leo while looking down on all the brown people. By the way, I'm mainly talking about the Pattaya scene with the complainers. In the boonies I don't even look for places to drink in public. I drink at home with friends and family. ;-)

Met my thai wife in my early 30's and l remember a lot of old expats of all nationalities in the village. Some were grumpy, but to be honest l was just too focused on enjoying the country and being with my wife, so it was never an issue. Bagging older white men seems to be the trend these days. Have a problem, its the old white mans fault. Just enjoy your life, who cares what someone else thinks.

First time seeing your channel. I’m about 95 miles east of you. I thought I was the only white guy in the village until the last trip over. We became good friends over a few weeks and were glad to have someone to speak English with. Our wives had a lot of mutual friends. The old man snarl is no joke, course I’m almost 50 😂. It happens a lot in the big stores.

think you meant grumpy, but point taken. saw an old brit cussing out staff in chiangmai food court once..... he obviously had issues . i guess unfortunately the thais were too respectful of the elderly to just lay his ass out. lucky him

I've saw a similar situation in Pattaya back in May. He wasn't cussing but he was standing there saying "Sawadee Kap" loudly several times in a row while stomping a foot each time while this poor old women was preparing food and he was clearly pissed off that he hadn't been acknowledged yet. He saw her working. It was insane. I felt so bad for her. It's hard for me to fathom some of the attitudes I've witnessed over here.

Just found your channel through a friend, I’m going to be moving (part time) to the other end of Khon Kaen (near the Udon Thani border) some time in the next year or so. I have only seen a handful of white men on my trips there, and always at or near KK immigration (other than around the Pullman Hotel). Luckily I haven’t dealt with the grumpy farang there as yet, but I’m sure I will at some point (hopefully I’m not one of them!)

I know what you mean! I didn't necessarily thought about these people as old. I don't think they care about you or anything. But my feeling is that these people were not happy back in their own country and thought things was gonna be different in Thailand. But it is as the the song goes "Everywhere you go, you always bring the weather with you". And as you say some of these guys have a real superiority complex. But happy to hear that you don't try to avoid foreigners, it is always nice to meet like minded people. Especially happy people. Good luck

Good luck on your travel to Vietnam. Watch out for the scooter bandits if you go to Saigon. You saying you are bored with nothing to do reminds me of when I was a kid skipping rocks kicking the can or shooting a lot of hoops along with riding my bicycle everywhere.

Same, when I lived in Bangkok I hung out with everyone, but when I moved to Udon Thani I was only interested in being around my wife and her Family. The older Expats are mostly bitter old bastards who bitch about how "terrible" Thailand is. Yet they stay most likely because they're poor as dirt back home in America or Europe.

I'm guessing that they see you with a pretty Thai lady and...they assume she's with you because you must have money....or, she's with you in spite of the fact you may not have much money! Either way, they're beyond making either scenario for themselves and they're just expressing contempt, born out of jealousy. Also, i suspect that a lot of these guys have some deep-seated racial and cultural prejudices that never allowed them to look past the 'bar girl' stereotypes, so as to be able to recognize the humanity of the Thai people.

Yeah, when me and my Thai girlfriend go to Pattaya, I get those looks but I don't tolerate it. If they stare too long, I''ll be sure to ask them what's up or if they have a problem. I'm not sure why they have this attitude that they're the only people that are allowed to be expats and enjoy the country. If they don't like it, they can always go back to their country. lol

At least 95% of expats in LOS are hardcore alcoholics. In fact, for many expats the expense of their binge drinking is #1 when figuring a budget for living in LOS. Anger, bitterness and remorse are qualities shared by most drunks.

it reminded me of Ukrainians and Russians being kicked out of Sri Lanka because they were organizing "whites only" spaces. The audacity of going to another country and acting all superior than the locals. I feel foreigners in Thailand are mostly like that, the Westerners. And I noticed that Westerners in Vietnam or Cambodia are more friendly, I think it depends on the type of tourists that flock to these places

@@SavageTraveling People outside of America don’t use the term asshole unless they are good friends or looking for a fight. Americans tend to use it like ‘buddy’ which in itself is still quite brash and seemingly confrontational. Perhaps you need to learn about English norms outside of American English as there aren’t too many Americans in SEA. As an Australian I can tell you most Australians and Brits don’t like Americans (on the surface giving a wide berth) for their brash behaviour/language. Perhaps this was the reason for the cold shoulder in the Aussie restaurant.. ??
