I will never understand how Rocksteady went from making one of the best trilogies in gaming, and then end up doing.... this? Seriously it baffles me so much.

5:50 EXACTLY! Metropolis felt like this fairytale disneyworld candyland. Gotham in AK felt like an ACTUAL city that had actual people living in it at some point. Despite being (mostly) empty, it felt so alive. The visual aesthetic and style, the little DC easter eggs and references, the constant thug chatter, the militia patrol... just thinking about it makes me want to replay the game.
@@PhotoModeReview An unpopular opinion I know but other than a new story there is not that much to do, the combat systems were pretty much perfected in Arkham knight, the graphics are amazing and still hold up to this day. I think VR is a great fit as it allows the series to keep the staples of the series (Combat, Stealth, Exploration, Detective) but explored in a whole new way from just another flat game.
AK is gritty and is probably a love letter to Tim Burton’s 1989 darker batman movie, Whereas Suicide Squad is a love letter to “campy & bright“ super hero comics, films etc, Which was a bad decision obviously as the gritty & believable underbelly of Gotham and it’s villains was way more interesting and amazing to behold visually.
Arkham Knight had interesting side quests,story and gameplay variety Actual challenges. Suicide squad is a boring grind with an unfinished story on a live service game
Hi man, you did a great job with the video! You got my like and every other support, but for real, nice analysis, for the camera 8:15, I believe it's cuz of course one game is signle player meanwhile the other one has 4 characters and since they're all together, they didn't wanna really leave anyone out of the scenes. Matter of fact, Idk what game that has 4 players has good cinematics tho, what comes to my mind now is Dead Island 1 & Riptide, both games's cinematics are bad AF even tho gameplay is 10/10
Even if I think Arkham Knight is the weakest game in the Arkham quadrilogy, it is leagues ahead of Suicide Squad due to it having a clear focus on a character. Suicide Squad feels all over the place, and we never really see the characters change or grow substantially through the story. Knight at least tries, and that's the main difference in how invested I am in the story. I will disagree on one of your points regarding DC needing to lean more into dark and gritty atmosphere. I'm of the mind that "DC is darker, Marvel is lighter" is a tiring attitude towards both properties. What DC needs to do is just do whatever they want and thinks is appropriate for the characters. Be SINCERE. Don't try to copy Marvel or whatever else. That's why The Batman and Joker worked; they were different not for the sake of being different, but because it felt like the filmmakers had something to tell and the tone directly facilitated that rather than just in spite of Marvel. Shazam and The Suicide Squad works because of that as well; they feel more like bright Marvel movies not to copy them, but just to tell a story that works with a lighter tone. In terms of video games, go back to Asylum and City and just have fantastical concepts without coming up with technical explanations for them. Let the worlds breathe without shackling them to reality. Asylum flourished because its atmosphere perfectly fit from the comics. Spider-Man suffered from this a bit with some of its villains and overall worldbuilding. Hopefully the Wonder Woman game follows this as well. Either way, really good analysis highlighting the visual storytelling between the two! I didn't fully realize just how much the HUD design impacts the world and storytelling until this video. (And thank you for including Origins)
The Arkham Series will forever be timeless because of the relaxing gameplay, thrilling stories, and beautiful atmosphere. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League lacked all of that. That's why I hated it. It's a massive downgrade from the Arkham Series. It's just lazy and soulless. There's no heart put into it. You can tell it's nothing but a cash grab. I miss when studios actually cared about the projects they released.
@@PhotoModeReview Suicide Squad was always going to be terrible because no one asked for it. Fans wanted a Superman or Batman Beyond game. I think a Batman Beyond game would've been perfect for Rocksteady.
@@PhotoModeReview It wouldn't be the same without Kevin Conroy. That game should've been a passing of the torch. Kevin could've passed the torch to a different Batman actor. Then that Batman could've continued the Arkhamverse.
@@PhotoModeReview Accept there was none of that. I had just learned that Rocksteady WANTED to make this game. Sefton Hill, the man who made the trilogy. Decided to go for the bad narrative, the pointless shooting and etc. Check the Arkham Series channel for more evidence.
