When Germany was set to face the host nation, Brazil, in the 2014 World Cup semifinals, absolutely nobody expected the Germans to crush their opponents 7-1, in what is the most shocking World Cup match of all time. But for a footballing powerhouse like Brazil who are the most successful national team of all time, how and why did this occur?

Obviously they were overwhelmed by the pressure, playing at home. Very, very, very obviously. Losing two of their best players was not the reason. They very visibly fell apart, in exceedingly extraordinary fashion. And something was obviously very wrong, as this video quite naturally alludes to. Why would they, or any team at all let alone a world power like Brazil, fall apart so utterly, in a way that was like having a nervous emotional breakdown right there on the field for all to see, rendering them effectively dysfunctional and almost in a state of shock after falling behind early in the match? Who knows for sure, but I would say it was the pressure of playing at home. Definitely not on account of the loss of any particular player, including the overrated Neymar. Germany would not have beaten New Zealand by that score, or Armenia. Or anyone. So that's the reason. A collective collapse of their basic functionality as a team, on account of the pressure of playing at home. To repeat, Germany would not have beaten USA's B team 7-1. And Brazil's team that day, even without Neymar and Thiago Silva, would still be one of the best in the world. So it was tragic, watching that happen. I don't give a shit about Brazil, they're the greatest soccer nation in the world, and need no pity. So to see that happen to them, in truly breathtaking, bizarre fashion, was appalling. Maybe it's because they no longer play the beautiful game, that was karma from the soccer gods....

Nah, they would have gotten spanked anyways. Just not 7-1. Maybe 5-2 or something. Neymar had no real defensive attributes and did nothing in 2014 that would suggest he could neutralize a counter, which was the German's preferred way to score goals. If they were able to mostly lock Messi down in the final, Neymar was not going to fare much better.

Attributing the defeat solely to the absence of the Brazilians' two top stars is a bit one-sided. Of course, any sensible person will assume that the German team's victory would at least have been less high. But: If you look at the very first goal - a corner kick - it is a simple positioning error: two German players cross paths and David Luis loses Müller's guard. This goal would have been scored regardless of whether the two stars had been there. The other goals can (also) be attributed to mistakes made by individuals (especially Fernandinho and Luis). So it's not just a collateral failure of the team. And Neymar would probably have managed just as much on offense as Messi did in the final - namely nothing (due to strong guarding by 2 German defenders, even though he didn't play centrally). How many shots did Messi take on the German goal in the final? Extremely few. The absence of two players hardly excuses anything: A coach has to ensure that the team performs well even if important players are missing. That's what training is for and friendly games are for. A World Cup is not just a series of games but, from the coach's point of view, a "marathon" during which a lot can happen. It is the coach's job to train the team so that as many line-up variations as possible lead to good team performance. If a coach relies on a few lineups or even a few individual players for the team's success, their absence will produce a correspondingly negative result. It is obvious that the German team had a healthy mix of older (experienced) and younger players, but Brazil did not. In addition: a player who already has a yellow card also has the responsibility to ensure that he is not missing in the next game. the yellow card that led to da Silva's suspension arose from a situation of no necessity. If he had prevented a goal with the foul, that would be understandable, but it was a cheap, unnecessary attack on a goalkeeper. And as for Neymar specifically, his goals in the tournament could even more atributed to goalkeepers who aren't world class. Manuel Neuer would have kept some of them. For example, the video also shows Neymar's extremely bad penalty, which only ends up in the goal with luck.

You can never win with a superstar himself. You have to have a team. And whatching the german team was like a watching a creature. They new how to walk, how to stay, they had an understanding between each other. This was like a machine working together. This is how you win and not to focus on one or two players. The team has to work.

@@largol33t12 unfortunately there were many old-timers in 2014's Argentina NT that should not have been there in my (and many other argentinians') opinion. 2018 was an absolute debacle, a disaster worth making a video essay too, but then in 2022 when we finally got our third, we did it just like the comment says: it was the team: enzo fernández, julián álvarez, lio messi all three were a powerful, deadly trident. Ottamendi and the rest of our midfield was pretty solid as well, our defense being our weakest point by far, but having El Dibu as the last wall to overcome was enough to take an extremely good (though not perfect) team to the top. At the end of the day, our team was (and still is today, I'm glad to see) a well-oiled machine.

My thoughts, as a brazilian: This team was subpar considering what we can usually output in terms of performance. Exemplifying this is the prior games in the WC against Chile in the Ro16 and Colombia in the quarters. Don't get me wrong, they had decent teams, especially colombia, but historically these are teams that don't pose much of a threat against Brazil, pretty much ever. Yet in that world cup Chile almost sent us packing with a ball to the post while the victory against colombia was the product of a work of miracle by Luiz. For Brazil, games against teams like these should NOT be THIS close. I still remember after that quarter final was over, and the tv hosts talking about how Germany was the next opponent, and I couldn't help but feel like: 'uh oh' We just needed blood sweat and tears to beat colombia of all teams (nothing against them ofc) and then were about to face a team that was not only stronger than colombia, but also without our best defender and attacker. Combine to that the fact that felipão decided to put Bernard, an attacking midfielder, exposing even more the already weak defense that was lacking Silva, all that for no good reason other than having him play in Belo Horizonte with the national team, as he was a player from a club from that very city. This didn't just lost us the midfield, it completely handed it over in a silver platter. Some tactically savy journalists were already spelling doom since Chile but they were largely ignored because it seemed like pessimism. Everyone was still running on the Confederations 2013 high when brazil beat a fragile spain in the final. Then there's the insane media pressure everyone knows about which is customary for brazilian national teams. Pele, after already winning two back-to-back world cups in 58 and 62 said, upon winning his THIRD in 1970, that the only thing he felt after the 1970 final was over was relief, knowing he wouldn't be judged. PELE, of all people. For the brazilian NT, anything but first place is a failure and it has deep psychological effects even on those who are some of the greatest talent of all time I appreciated the background music lol

Thank you for providing your perspective! You're very mature about it, which is not easy at all. I don't want to examine painful moments in my country's sports history but you are providing inspiration for me to face them. It's probably difficult for the rest of the world to understand how much not winning the World Cup means to Brazilians. I'm trying to think of an equivalent in another sport. It used to be the Americans who totally dominated in basketball and baseball, but it's still not the same because not that many other countries are deeply emotionally invested in these sports. It seems like an unrealistic expectation for Brazil to win the Cup every time. The next most successful countries are Germany and Italy, but I don't think that they or their fans assume they will win every time. There's a channel called "HITC Sevens" which just made a video on the Brazilian national team, and the challenges it faces. There are a lot of factors that are completely outside the control of Brazilian players and coaches such as the very high salaries players can earn in the Premier League, resulting in fewer Brazilian national team members playing their club football in Brazil. Right now, the economics don't favour Brazil, but that does not mean things cannot change in the future. A few months ago, the same channel made a video on Germany's national team, which has a title like "the shocking downfall". 🫠

My analysis goes in another direction. The expectations we're so incredibly high fostered by the media and the public that they sought for the wrong strategy. Pushing for a goal, they neglected the defense and were surprisingly ill prepared against players of the quality of the German team. They were playing in a fictitous world. I'm convinced that this was due to being overwhelmed by the expectations that winning was the only possible outcome. Apart from that, a more defensive football strategy ( Dunga style ) had led to a severe crisis in Brasilian football years before. You would have to expect that Brazil would find ways to substitute somehow even a player like Neymar. They do have exceptional football players.

The team underwent stretches of psychological torture thru out the tournament...How on earth is a squad hosting a monumental event such as the WC supposed to be mentally sound and serene while in training, hordes of locals brandished posters condemning their country's hosting rights and even verbally harassing the squad... Yes it's true. This is an event rarely mentioned (surprisingly) by the Press. And this happened thru out the tournament. I wouldn't even mention the expectations from the Press and public....The team had shown signs of cracking up from their second outing against Mexico who virtually over ran the midfield, which surely contributed in sapping the team's moral and dampening the little confidence that remained...And then, there's the knockout match against Chile which perhaps exposed Brazil 's febrility more than any other. Thiago Silva's near nervous breakdown was so livid and was a perfect embodiment of the team's state of mind, I felt sorry for him...And how many people remember he declined taken penalties after regular time, seeking refuge at the central spot?...The team just wasn't good enough...

The main problem was that Brazil had been given a run of soft fixtures designed to lead to a Brazil : Argentina final. That is why you got Germany: France in a quarter final while Brazil were playing Columbia. Up to this point Brazil’s toughest game had been against Croatia which they had won via a classic piece of home crowd refereeing while they faced a Germany side that had beaten both Portugal and France and were up for a tough game against 12 men. The surprise wasn’t that Germany won easily, that had been on the cards since the group stages. The surprise was just how catastrophically Brazil went to pieces after the second goal.
@thefootballbloc
@thefootballbloc 2 года назад
I disagree. Brazil had a tough route to the final. Their group was definitely not easy as each team had talented squads. Cameroon ended up flopping but Mexico was consistent as usual and Croatia was unlucky to get eliminated that early. Then Chile and Colombia were extremely strong opponents, especially since this World Cup was in South America. Brazil’s toughest game was against Colombia and credit to Brazil, they actually played up to their potential in that match.

@@thefootballbloc tough? Brazil certainly made it look tough even though it was the easiest route to the Semi of any of the 4 sides, even Argentina had to play a second rank European side. But you are trying to claim a group of 3 teams who don’t book hotels for week 3 and Brazil was “challenging”. You are quite right Croatia were unlucky to go out that early which shows just how easy that group was. Chile and Columbia were what they always were teams who ought to have gone out by the end of the second round at best. The problem was always that to get an Argentina vs Brazil final both had to play good European sides in the semifinals. Argentina were good enough that their 12th man could prevent humiliation Brazil weren’t. They went on to lose 3-0 to the Netherlands. On a properly seeded even draw Brazil would have gone out in the round of 16.

I’m not well versed in football but I remember watching this game and just wondering how that defense looked like it was sleepwalking. While Neymar’s absence definitely had an effect, I would say that Silva’s absence was the much bigger detriment. Without a solid back line, it was honestly painful to see Caesar practically being exposed at goal numerous times. Any half way decent striker could have replaced Neymar and I think done okay. But without a strong defense, there was no way the Brazil team could hold any real ground against strong offensive teams like Germany. And once that defense collapsed, it was game over.

Even though Neymar was playing good at that time , pele and Romario urged to take him he didn't. 14000 people signed a petition to include Neymar in the WC squad, he said Neymar was not tested enough for World Cup. But Grafite was in the squad who played his first match under dunga in March, 2010. His achievement was he scored 28 goals for Wolfsburg in the 2008-2009 Bundesliga. He has only 4 caps for Brazil. I guess when it comes to left back position Marcelo, Filipe Luis, Maxwell these names comes to mind.....but do you know who was in the starting xi at LB ....Michel Bastos. He was not even a defender , he was a left winger. He played his first match under dunga in October 2009. He only has 10 caps for Brazil. Both Grafite and Michel Bastos never played for Brazil again. Imo biggest mistake of scolari was ignoring Diego costs. If you can start for Spain at the WC ahead of David villa and Torres, then I think you are good enough to start for Brazil. It was a big problem that Neymar and Thiago Silva didn't play but it was also a bigger problem how the team reacted to their absence. Crying during the national anthem and being too emotional gave Germany a sign that Brazil is not ready for such a huge responsible game. Scolari was already old at this time and didn't have the same authority like he used to have in World Cup 2002. Brazilian team had a very wrong approach for this certain game. Maybe winning Confederations Cup 2013 gave people false hope that they're stronger than they actually were. Brazil was probably still going to lose against Germany even if Neymar and Thiago Silva have played, but at least it wouldn't have been so humiliating. Brazilian team wasn't professional enough and unfortunately they had to learn a tough lesson.

The team just didn't have the chemistry anymore players like Schweinsteiger Klose and Lahm where gone. Adding onto that where Löws tactics he played a very slow game which didn't work out well in 2018 for some reason. Perhaps the biggest reason was what happened of the pitch players did more sponsor meetings and press appearances than training mainly because of the shattered image that the team had before. Context: Özil and Gündogan made photos with Erdogan (Turkish President) shortly before the tournament that enraged many fans and even politicians in Germany talked about it because Erdogan is seen as a very controversial person in Germany. Many fans said that the two should be dropped from the team. The media/press team wanted more positive headlines and made the players do media stuff in training time. Overall all these reasons together made Germany fall in 2018.

He was appointed on the year 2012, when the club he trained, Palmeiras, got relegated to the second division. Close to the end of the National League here too, so the man who trained the team by the time it was confirmed had little to do with what he was handed. The reason it happened was that the Brazilian team went into shock in response to the incredible flow that this German team had. It was a one off; had they played again, it would not happen like that. This very German team suffered a similar setback in the qualifying campaign in Berlin when they conceded four goals in twenty minutes against - Sweden! One cannot ascribe such an event to player form or player selection. What happens is that a team for some reason gets into a flow, where they become almost unstoppable. I'm not a fan of centering your offence one player. Ok there's lots of exceptions here (e.g. 2022 Argentina), but what will happen if that one player gets injured? For a stacked line up like Brazil with one of the richest football traditions, the 1-7 loss to Germany is unacceptable. They've got players that maybe less talented than Neymar but still talented enough to trouble Germany. Its ok if they loss 0-3 or 1-4 as Germany is too well oiled and also stacked. In the situation at hand, what the Brazil should have done is play defensive like Argentina did vs Germany in the subsequent match (thr final). Defend with everything you've got and hope your 1-2 offensive players get some offense. At the very least send the game to overtime. Argentina narrowly lost in extra time so at least Argentina avoided embarrassment. Germany deserves the 2014 championship despite me rooting for Argentina Brazil and other South Americans in world cups in general.

I agree with it completely. That is what teams usually do in major competitions when facing a superior team- defend well. Germany is far superior to the Brazil team with Silva and Neymar. I expected Brazil to play Marcelo at the left wing and another defender at left back. This was far better than playing a young inexperienced kid like Bernard on the left flank against such a strong German team. Instead of defending hardly, they were trying to become heroes by scoring a goal. Everybody wants to score a goal and dedicate it to Neymar. David Luiz is a classic example of how a central defender should not be.

Neymar was good, but he wasn't going to score or assist 6 goals. They lost 7-1 because they forgot how to defend. Whether through disorganization or lack of effort/accountability is up for debate though.

How come ronaldinho wasnt in the team? And what about kaka? Robinho?
@thefootballbloc
@thefootballbloc Год назад
@@saiyanbrother5659 Well, Felipao really wanted to maintain the team that won the 2013 Confederations Cup all three players weren't part of that squad. Obviously, Kaka's career took a steep decline at Real Madrid due to injury and those injuries continued even as he went back to AC Milan in the season leading up to the World Cup. Although, he was in decent form. Robinho was in and out of the Brazil squad in the years leading up to the World Cup and he wasn't in the best form for Santos. Ronaldinho's exclusion is entirely on Felipao. Yes, he wasn't the same player as he was 10 years prior, but he was fresh off winning the Copa Libertadores with Atletico Mineiro in 2013 and was in good form. I don't think Felipao should've called up all three of these players, but he should've called up at least one of them (particularly Ronaldinho), especially since this squad severely lacked World Cup experience.

I can’t believe it’s been a decade since the entire sports world saw the decimation and evisceration of the greatest team in football history that is Brazil. 7 goals by the German national team is something I would never have imagined.

In the 11th minute, Thomas Mueller, standing in the middle of the box, side-footed a corner kick for the first goal. SIDE-FOOTED A CORNER KICK. UNMARKED. Absolutely atrocious marking. Seriously, David Luiz looked like he was playing with 'roid rage at times. That team had no leader to calm them down.
