Why destroying the Children of Atom is the best decision (Far Harbor)

Of the three factions within Fallout 4: Far Harbor, the Children of Atom are the most dangerous for stability on the island. In this video, I make a case for why their destruction, in the kindest way, is the best option.

I really love these morally grey choices in Far Harbor, it's a really well-crafted DLC, apart from the tedious DiMA memories. These choices really compliment the amazing setting for the DLC as well. I really wish there was some option for the minutemen to get in relation with far harbor, just like how the Institute, BoS, and Railroad all have some unique interactions with Far Harbor. Well, if you pass the speech check you can convince Tektus to just leave. You don't have to kill him. I think that is why many see the Reformation ending as the best possible. No one has to die, and everyone agrees to live in peace, with Dima monitoring everything from Acadia. But Avery is already a synth. If you replace Tektus, you are handing control of the entire island over to Dima. So ultimately, how one personally feels about Dima is the key to which ending one feels is best. Has Dima learned from his past mistakes? Or is he always going to end up being a tyrant in one form or another? Can he be trusted with that much power?

@speedingoffence
@speedingoffence 3 года назад
@@baconbaron1776 I think you've missed the entire point of the axiom. History is rife of examples of people who had good intentions, only to succumb to power. Usually they don't even realize it's taken them. The statement is a criticism of humanity itself, not of any one person's character. It's derivative of William Pitt the Elder's “Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it", which eloquently puts the emphasis on the problem being the power itself, not the individuals who receive it. If you do look through history for those that buck the trend, they do exist- there have been thousands of leaders, and with any pool, exceptions are bound to form. Consistently, however, you'll find that those people are known as great because they went out the way to divest their power, instead of consolidate, which does not conflict with the intent of the axiom. As a matter of fact, it does the opposite: It converys that actively decentralizing power is in itself a 'good'. A nod to the more modern take from The Dark Knight; "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.", which is basically the same saying, but a bit more pleasantly dramatic.

I wish that there was some way to possibly evacuate/relocate the settlers of Far Harbour to a settlement back in Boston, maybe needing you to give up a settlement for them to live at. Spectacle Island maybe? Maybe DiMA could 'convince' Avery that holding the docks is more trouble than it's worth in the long run. Sure, it wouldn't solve the Children of Atom problem but I feel Arcadia and the CoA would get along better if it was just the two of them and the former Far Harbourites would probably not be too happy, but it could be interesting seeing their presence in Boston too.

Even confessor Martin exclaims that one day the fog will become so thick that not even the condensers will be able to hold it back. The commonwealth gets a bunch of new settlers that are master fishermen . And then the CoA and Acadia could actually form an alliance since synths don’t have to worry ab radiation (which is weird bc they’re there are some trappers that literally ate a gen 3 so they must have some sort of DNA). I can’t imagine the brotherhood or the institute getting past a fog full of radiation and almost deathclaw strength monsters, a legion of zealots that are wearing some of the best base armor and weapons in all of the game, and a fortified building on top of the tallest peak on the island. Not to mention chase who’s a corser which are capable of single handedly mopping up entire gunner bases on their own.

In the quest The Heretic you can talk to sister Gwyneth and she'll tell you that she found the truth of Atom. She says atom is merely a spec in the vastness of the universe. In the quest you have three options. 1. Kill her. 2. Convince her to flee the island. 3. Convince her to return to her family. I wish Bathesda would have allowed a fourth option where you could encourage her to create a schismatic branch of the religion that would be more peaceful: Seeing that atom is merely a natural phenomenon that has no will of its own can be used to do good with. This would allow for a lasting peace on the island and no self degradation for the followers.

@@urubissoldat5452 their religion is a literal death cult whose rapture involves detonation of nuclear weapons and the exposure of its congregation to lethal doses of radiation regularly. Upon arriving at the Nucleus, you'll see someone kill another member to prove their devotion. The first event inside is the high confessor giving a speech about how they will see everyone be divided by Atom again. The test you must pass to join is intended to kill the weak or make their brain soup from radiation exposure. Two separate quests involve rooting out and murdering heretics. All of their weapons are best suited for killing other humans, not wasteland creatures. They are not practicing Atom as a religion of peace. They are persecuted because they are a fervent death cult, and in response to persecution for being a death cult, they begin escalating their authoritarian side into a full blown theocracy helmed by a temperamental zealot. Advice for survival in the Church of Atom from Sister Mai isn't "follow Adam's will" it's "Don't upset the high confessor in any way." The children of Atom fucking suck.

I think a 4th unspoken option is possible, that being the annexation of the Island and the reuniting of the children of atom under the flag of the minutemen. Be that the minutemen atleast in my mind have the best chance of maintaining peace and flourishing post story there is but 1 problem. The glowing sea, it generates fierce animals and blows radiation into the rest of the Commonwealth, there is not settlement close enough to it that the settlers wouldn't be effected by it. So instead and considering our character can convince them to blow themselves up they are convinced to rebuild relationships with the Commonwealth chapters and build order in the glowing sea, allowing for a trade of service as guards against the glowing sea in return for giving full control of the glowing sea to the children of atom and allowing non hostile sects to practice within specified locations in the Commonwealth to both quell risk of radiation leaking into certain areas and have give the religious fanatics they're undisturbed holy sites. All this for leaving the island alone (minus the military base) and accepting the rules under a united Minuteman alliance.

In the last playthrough I did I spared Dima and the synths, even tho I was the leader of the institute. Keeping far harbor and Dimas crew alive, while nuking the nut bags? Yeah I think I made an easily good moral decision. After trying to RAM through decisions with the institute, to have to Let them survive because, technologically they are pretty much the best hope for humanity. Hopefully with a good leader, they would be less evil. Hence why I let Dima and his crew live. I'd like to think I was the best possible leader for the institute. And also made life in far harbor livable for 2/3 of the people instead of 1/3 by following the children of Atom.

I mean if it makes you feel a little better, you don’t have to kill Tektus to replace him, you can convince him to leave by himself. It’s also worth pointing out while Reformation does ensure peace, it literally makes you no better than the institute, ego do exactly the same thing, and thus, warrant destruction in the eyes of the main quest. It also made me feel worse because DiMA’s “prove to us both that you’re not a synth” completely messed me up and now I’m at least a little convinced that the SS really is a synth. On the other hand though, there’s no way to know what nuking the children of atom will actually do to the island in the long term, meaning it might have been just as existentially dangerous to the harbour men and Arcadians as the area’s former denizens

My counterargument is exactly Confessor Martin's point. The island is basically a lost cause for anyone susceptible to the fog simply becuase it periodically wipes out almost the entire island. The Far Harbor people might as well colonize the sea, the inner island isn't much more hospitable on the long term. Whether Atom exists or not, the Children can somehow thrive in the rads without turning into ghouls so the island is naturally suitable for them.
