Landscape Photography | Conceding to Misery After Beauty

This landscape photography video starts with a high and ends on a low. The first image I captured may be my favourite of my trip to the Canadian Rockies. After lunch we ventured to Lake Minnewanka (I hope I pronounced it correctly), however I was unable to be inspired by this location. It was beautiful, but I couldn't quite find it in me to unpack my camera and take a photo. That's how it goes sometimes.

Really appreciate this as a lesson. The times when a scene is just stunning in person but doesn’t lend well to composition or getting a great image is usually when people try to ‘force’ an image and I feel like it usually just results in frustration and taking away from enjoying being in that moment. These are the times to just accept it, put your camera away or set a timelapse and take in your surroundings in peace and quiet. Loving the Rockies series Tom!

I have been watching your videos for some time now and always enjoy them. It was soooo nice to see you in Banff. I live in Calgary and this is my backyard. I really appreciated you telling us about how you struggled for some compositions. I am a amateur photographer and I have struggled in this same environment. It is gorgeous here but the Rockies are so vast it is hard to capture it in a photograph. It never does it justice. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Come back again sometime, there is so much more to see.

I live an hour from Banff and get to spend about 3 weeks or so in the mountains off-grid camping every year. Sometimes you just have to slow down and smell the roses, just remember where you are and enjoy the scenery. The weather can change very rapidly either way. Not every day is a fantastic day for photography, sometimes, you have to settle for good. The mornings (sunrises) tend to have better light than the afternoons (sunsets).

I wonder if perhaps your ability to travel to so many amazing locations around the world has started to spoil you a bit (I don't mean that in a negative way). If I was there, I'd be so thrilled to see such gorgeous scenery I'd be taking hundreds of photos. I live in the flatland of Michigan, and when I went to Phoenix and the mountains of Arizona, I was enthralled by even the most mundane foothills. I realize you're looking for phenomenal shots, but don't forget there's incredible beauty beyond what's good enough for a calendar. Regardless, this is another great video, so thanks for sharing!

You could have moved far to the left at the lake and gotten a leading line into the gap between the mountains. Some clouds in the image might add depth, but 'that golden hour of light (warm)' would not be a deal breaker. Bet you would have hda depth and contrast in an awsome setting. Sometimes, as photographers, we get to the point where details can overshadow our sense of the greater image after we've been at it a while. May be time to simplify even the big picture.
