He simply didn't love her and she couldn't give him another child to fullfill the three headed dragon prophecy.

I hate to do this Grease; but I have to disagree with you. I like the theory that Elia sent Rhaegar away rather than him just up and leaving. This wouldn't be unheard of; if I'm not mistaken, Alysanne instigated her two seperations from Jaehaerys. And he still continued Crown business. So I don't see anything malevolent about Rhaegar doing the same after his wife initiates a seperation. Also, I view Elia and Rhaegar's marriage much like Donald and Melania Trump's is said to be- meaning they are co-conspirators in everything and for their own reasons each prioritizes their marriage/political position. And will do anything to support it. On a seperate note, I don't believe Rhaegar was looking for a new wife at Harrenhal. I obviously don't know yet but per my interpretation of events there, I think Rhaegar found out Lyanna was the 'Knight of the Laughing Tree', found out why she did it, and crowned her because she deserved it. Just my opinion though. Great video Grease!

Interesting theory but given the descriptions of Elia's personality, I doubt she'd be a co-conspirator, more like a damsel.

We don’t have any evidence that Rhaegar in fact “left” Elia. Most likely, he either came to Lyanna’s rescue because no one else would help her escape from Robert whom she was being forced to marry against her will; or he found her on Elia’s behalf as a surrogate mother bc Elia could not have a third child and live, while Rhaegar’s dragon dreams convinced him he needed to have three children to fight for the living in the Long Night. Neither of these two most likely scenarios involves Rhaegar leaving Elia as a wife and partner. However, Lyanna and Elia had to be kept apart even though they likely all wanted to be together bc the Mad King wanted Lyanna and the other Starks dead but was holding Elia and the existing kids as hostages to force Rhaegar not to betray him in the civil war. That’s why Lyanna and Rhaegar couldn’t return to Elia. (And although Rhaegar thought no one would harm Elia, just to be safe, he had Arthur Dayne swap out Aegon VI for another baby and take baby-heir Aegon to Braavos during the war to be raised as a faceless man, whom we know as Arya’s savior and mentor, Jaqen H’ghar, the one true king of Westeros, who has come back to sit in the shadows and stop the wrong people from leading over and over for the rest of the story until the very end, when he can retake his throne, as Rhaegar planned and arranged long ago. Dany sees him Jaqen-Aegon as a baby with Rhaegar and Elia in the House of the Undying and the vision tells her he still lives and his song is song of Ice and Fire itself, which we are all reading, and every other character plays a part in. George Martin has spoke about Strider being his favorite character in the Lord of the Rings-but that his identity should have stayed secret until the very end of the story!-and that interview is the biggest secret tell by George who Jaqen really is and who the final king is, it’s just that no one has paid attention to it, but me. :)

My theory has always been that Elia knew more than most people gave her credit. If Dany's vision of them is real, then that means Rhaegar told her all about his prophecy stuff and divulged the Song of Ice and Fire. Something not even Maester Aemon or really any other people knew. As for the Lyanna situation, its hard to say but you can't convince me she didn't at least ask Rhaegar questions. And considering how long they had been married and living together on Dragonstone, she knew her husband.
@maggyfrog
@maggyfrog Месяц назад
elia definitely knew because rhaegar told her about "the song of ice and fire". i forget which character had this vision about them discussing it. i think it was either dany having dragon dreams or bran with his greensight. edit: it was dany while she was in the house of the undying having all those visions.

The Dornish seem partial to polygamy, so I don’t think that Elia would necessarily feel shamed by Raeghar pursuing Lyanna. Really thoughtful analysis!

This timeline confuses me lot how was there no Targaryen women for Jamie where was vaella , aelora, Calla , daella , Rhae Like where did all those female Targaryen to go that was supposedly still alive. Did they all die in Summerhall or just live lives outside of the castle in Like rhaelle with the Baratheons and this is why I hate when George makes appendix’s or random family trees, and t women who are literally still alive just never mentioned again I get that George came up with the prequel stuff or s later down the line, but he did not think this through inventing those characters without mentioning what happened to them
@g_wylde
@g_wylde Месяц назад
Completely agree with you on George creating female characters that never get any development or use in the story. We didn't even know who Ned's mother was until way down the line! But to be fair, a lot of the "youngest" Targaryen women were a fair bit older than Elia and Jaime's generation - otherwise Rhaegar could've married one of them. Looking at the wiki, Aerys and Rhaella seem to not have any other siblings, and Jaehaerys and Shaera had only one sister, Rhaelle, who married a Baratheon (Robert's grandparents). They also had two brothers, Duncan, who died childless at Summerhall, and Daeron, who also died childless years earlier. Prior to that, Aegon V had one niece, Vaella, who was probably even older than her cousin Jaehaerys, and was supposedly "weak-minded". And Aegon V also had two younger sisters, Daella and Rhae, whose fates we admitedly don't hear much about, but it's theorised that one of them married into the Tarths and is Brienne's (great) grandmother. But at this point we're talking about women who would have been elderly by the time of Rhaegar, Jaime, etc. If they were married off to weaker families, their grandchildren and great-grandchildren wouldn't be the great matches that Tywin and co. were hoping for. It is also very likely that these women would've been at Summerhall, as we hear much of the family was there even if most of them aren't specified by name. Aelora was Aegon V's older cousin and died quite young, also childless. Calla was Daemon Blackfyre's daughter, who would've lived closer to House of the Dragon's time than to ASOIAF's. Plus, her family ran away to Essos as traitors to the crown, so they wouldn't have been considered good matches for powerful Westerosi families. So, to be fair to George, most of these characters are accounted for, and it can be assumed that any suriviving Targaryens would've died at Summerhall. There really just weren't any Targaryen women of marrying age around then.

By the time Harranhall happens Rhaegar was very much estranged from his father. The whole point of the Tournament was to get the Major and Minor Houses in Rhaegar to oust Aerys as King it was a secret that later found out.

@@DeCode343 I mean, she died years and years before the start of the story, how would you expect her to be shown doing anything? She's not meant to be a particularly important character, fair enough, but then we might as well say that any minor character that exists to further other characters' plots isn't a real character but a plot device. I mean, can't find a better example than Brandon Stark, whose only purpose in the story is to be brash and die young in order to kick start the Rebellion.

if ellia didnt marry rhagar then the king would be forced to marry rhagar to cersie, janna tyrell pre fosway marriage, lyanna pre her proposal to Robert, especially since the lord of the stormland died on a failed expedition to find rhagar a wife. interesting how 1 change would shake the whole story

Why would Aerys be "forced" to marry Cersei to Rhaegar? He refused the first time because he considered her too low to be a bride and there was no consequences really to refusing the marriage.
