This 2015 CVO 110 Liquid Cooled Model has 40,000 miles on it and it sounds like a jar of marbles. Lets tear down this Twin Cam and see why this Harley engine noise got BAD! A full tear down and diagnosis.

thanks again Kevin. If I wasn't I so old I'd just come wash parts for you. I have been building pan"s and shovels since the 70/80/s and I have learned more from you in the last few years than ever. Thank YOU. I'd love to buy you a drink.

These tear down videos are some of my favorite, on the Tube and from Kevin. This gentleman has such a wealth of knowledge, and it is truly a privilege to be able to watch and listen when he speaks in detail about what he sees and why it may be while he’s tearing down or what he does when he’s building. Thank you man! The relationship between human and machine is a special one.

You must be so disappointed in the quality of your motorcycle. You thought you were going to get a great motorcycle you spent a fortune on a Harley-Davidson and it took a dump. I just can't believe how the quality of a Harley-Davidson has deteriorated in the last 20-plus years after the demise of the Evolution motor. I hear from another RU-vidr that there is kits out there where you could put an Evolution motor in a twin cam frame. It might be something to consider.

Each are different really and can vary broadly depending on 5 things as I have found over the years... current condition of bike, how it will be used, riding style, desired power output, and confidence level of all associated stock components. That determines the required budget and everyone's answers are different to these questions.

I can't understand how an engine on such an expensive motorcycle and really expensive in the case of a CBO has catastrophic engine failure and 20 something thousand miles. Mine 20 plus year old Harley Sportster 883 has almost 400,000 miles on the original engine. But just like the Evolution Big twin the Evolution Sportster is discontinued as well. The only time I split the cases on my 1965 Triumph TR6 was because it was 40 years old and the camshaft we're both worn out.

I replaced the lifters on my 110 cvo at aprox. 40000 kilometers to prevent exactly this. I was advised to do so by one of the mechanics at the shop where i bought the bike. He told me he had a catastrophic engine failure caused by a lifter exploding while running the bike on a dyno. He told me this is a known problem wich can ocure on 110 cvo engines. Seeing this video i'm glad i did. Changed the cam plate, cam bearings for a SE camplate en bigger oil pump in the proces. Bike stil runs like a dream. 😊

Kevin, what causes the piston slap, the cylinders not machined correctly? I bought a 100 CI S&S big bore kit, they sent the shop doing the work 8 sets of cylinders before there were 2 that would fit. It has piston slap until it warms up,. Is this normal for a big bore set up or do you think there is an issue?

Is the crank in that shape because Harley started using pressed bearings instead of staying with the the timken bearings during assembly to cut cost? I have a 103ci HO engine but upgraded to a stage III 110ci kit; apparently if I want to go up to a 117ci I'd have get a new crank to handle the HP and TQ.
@KevinBaxter

not really. a tapered main bearing vs roller bearing really doesnt contribute to scissoring or twisting a crank. you dont have to have a brand new crank, but i would certainly reman and work your stock one at least.

Hi Kevin, I had a severe sumping issue on my M8 and the motor eventually blew with a piston rotating in the cylinder. Do you think the extreme overheating could of caused the piston rings and cylinders to be compromised to the point the piston could turn in the cylinder destroying my heads and motor?
@KevinBaxter
