While I wouldn’t say I hate my art, it is certainly frustrating. I hadn’t realised it had been so long since I had actually completed a piece of art. I often work in my sketchbook and know the things that I need to study but ultimately I’ve only grown an image in my head of what I want my art to look like. When I can’t reproduce it straight away and quickly I get discouraged and then don’t finish. Or if I do get closer to a finished stage I just think the piece looks boring. The more I think about it, the more I think it’s to do with effort. Finishing art seems to take a lot more out of me than it used to when I was younger, so now I want the art I make to be worth the effort. I think a lot of this is in my head/ is a reflection of my life at the moment. Maybe I’m just trying to do too many things/ my attention is being pulled in too many different directions. Thank you for all the good advice in this video! I hope I can implement it more into my art process!

Alot of people hate their art because they think that other people are much better them and they tend to compare themselves to other people. We should just learn to accept that we are UNIQUE in our own way and we have our own kind of art style that we should just enjoy. If we keep thinking that "I need to be like them", "I should do better than them" or "Their art is better than mine" then we will never see our own Uniqueness. WE SHOULD NOT COMPARE OURSELVES TO OTHER PEOPLE. Lets get rid of that toxic trait of comparison and learn to accept our own uniqueness. Insteas lets keep thinking "I am just good as them" and "I love my own art even if it may have some imperfections".

This was illuminating! I am autistic and have a super hard time navigating these kinds of inside/outside issues when dealing with the things I try to make. Getting stuck in loops is kind of how my entire life works, but it is comforting to know that this is something professional artists deal with in their own ways. Thank you for the advice and inspiration: )

Credo che mi hai appena curato Im also italian, it's been 4 years since I'm on an art block and i dont like my art anymore, i watched so many help guides but i watched 2 videos from you and it opened my art I think it all started when i wanted to start commissions but i felt the rejection of the customers and it made me doubt my art, i started comparing myself to other artists and started thinking i wasn't good enough, the only times where i drew i just did the same things over and over, never finishing an actual piece and just doing practice.. felt bored and everytime i drew i avoided what i didn't know what to do(anatomy) and just sticked to what i knew, everytime i drew something negative emotions and thoughts flew all over my head and it made me dislike drawing.. everytime i thought about drawing i thought about practice and it made me feel bad because I wasn't good how i wanted to be and people younger than me (I'm still young im 17) were already god level in 2-3 years compared to me who has been drawing since 2017 and i felt so bad.. but those 7 years i only drew with 2 years with all my passion.. these last 5 years have been me hating my art and hating what i do but i wanna change.. i wanna see practice without hate and finishing pieces without thinking im not good enough and actually loving what i do.. im actually crying rn because I i cannot see myself without art in my life but i was so scared all this time of doing something wrong when i don't everyone does mistakes I hope this is not just a feeling for today but i can change my life and my art for the better Thank you Veronica sul serio credo che mi hai salvato la vita ❤

Tesoro ♥️ scrivo in inglese perché penso che la tua testimonianza sia molto importante: you have no idea how many of us have been there. How many years spent in fear, doubt, self-hate, feeling of not being good enough and repressing our NEED TO MAKE ART. It took me so long to realize that I’m worthy of calling myself an Artist and make Art, flaws and all! Perfection is our enemy not our goal. Making art, breathing art, being art is the goal! Without expectations, without hesitation! If you can’t see yourself and your life without art, my darling: MAKE ART. Reclaim your right to create love for yourself and others through your passion! We receive so many “no” and rejection in our life but the only thing that matters is that we must NEVER REJECT OURSELVES. Love your art, love the journey, love the process, make mistakes, embrace mistakes, love mistakes! You are an Artist, capital A. ♥️

In my opinion even critique that doesn't tell what exactly isn't right or that doesn't offer a solution is also valid. For example if somebody sees a picture of a face or whatever he can say that it doesn't look right even if he can't point out what exactly it is. Even if the tone is rude a critique could be valid. Rudeness doesn't make a critique unvalid. You can of course choose to ignore it, which also doesn't make it unvalid (if it was in the first place).
@vespertiliu
@vespertiliu 3 месяца назад
While partially I can agree with you, here the matter is empowering people who struggle to feel confident in their artistic expression. I agree with you and I think one should make a choice, and choose to not listen to such critique exposed without being specific or with rude manners, because an artist should not spiral into thoughts trying to figure out what they could have possibly have done wrong and instead they should focus on what’s next. And I speak from experience: Every time I choose to listen to a random, rude, critique, I’ve been left blocked and unable to enjoy my art, and therefore practice, study and improve. While by choosing to listen to well exposed critique I’ve always found my why through motivation, inspiration and encouragement. So while a “bad” critique could surely be also valid, I think it’s important to choose what to listen to, so that whatever it’s your choice, it leads you to encouragement towards what’s next, and not fixating on fixing something that might not need to be fixed. Thank you for your polite feedback, I appreciate it.

Interesting theme. I suppose, I have the same problem, just from the opposite side. "How to set your expectations to your actual skill level?" I'm too afraid to start a new art piece, because I always think it will turn out too badly (and I want a beautiful one). If I overcome this fear, the actual piece often become much better than I've expected. But I still don't believe into myself and still scared to start a new one, because I don't want to be dissapointed in myself. Simple solutions, like showing myself "a statistic of good vs. bad", or telling myself "c'mon, just start, you'll like it, it almost always work!" don't work. If anyone else experience the same issue, how do you fight it? By the way, Veronica, I love your accent. I heard an Italian man speaking English before, and I was so impressed by how appealing his accent was, and now I understand that it's something that native Italian speakers have. Very, very beautiful!
@vespertiliu
@vespertiliu 4 месяца назад
Hello! So the core of your problem is expecting to like the final piece. You just have to tell yourself “come on! Let’s draw! You love to draw!” And then do it. And maybe the piece will be not of your taste, or maybe you’ll like it, but that’s not the point! The point is to make art. If you push yourself to create telling yourself “you will like it this time” you’ll put on you a lot of pressure and you’ll go through the art process feeling anxious on the expectation you have set for that piece. Result: you won’t enjoy the process. So you need to shift your perspective here :)

@vespertiliu
@vespertiliu 4 месяца назад
Still, what I tried to express in the video is: bring with you what comforts you but step out of your comfort zone! But you must do it for yourself only! Not because you want to meet the expectations of people who want you to draw different things every time. Sure! If you get hired from a publisher and he commissions you a story in particular, than you have to stick to it and go out of your comfort zone for work! But for the rest it’s something you should do for yourself “step out of the comfort of your home, bringing with you your favorite book” :)

I paint Magic cards, which means its incredibly hard to erase some paint you didnt mean to put somewhere or in that way, so its always 'what if I really mess up' since its not paper but owned cards. I like it because its a lot more thrilling and most in the community show their mistakes since they are so common, so its pretty wholesome when you see how everyone talks to each other.

And what if they do? It’s hard to learn to hear criticism, but first we have to learn to listen to it. Understand where it comes from. Are those people saying useful things you can use to grow further or are just saying mean things you can ignore? The greatest artists in the world every day are being mocked by people who find themselves in museums without having any idea what making art means. You know what is amazing about your comment? I find it difficult or even imposible to comfort myself through my art, when my skills are lower than low. I mean, it's not like: "this hand i drew is a little off, i hate this, i hate my art, i hate myself" - it's more like:" I drew a hand, but honestly You would never guess it supposed to be a hand". With that kind of skill level making art is hard. When literally every line I've put on paper is a struggle, the battle against the matter, there is no place for comforting myself with art. And it's extremely discouraging.

a true artist is never satisfied with what they have because they feel like they can always do better and often do even after creating a series of masterpieces hate is a strong word it's ok to dislike but I think a person should learn to not allow their self to hate anything or anyone, high value is a person that has control over their thoughts, emotions, actions, what they say, and makes good decisions that person is inside you screaming to come out, no one will find that person inside for you, only you can find that person and become the best version of yourself the words of a loving nurturing parent - people NEED to hear it - sons and daughters, significant others, parents, friends, colleagues everyone is looking for it and all the money in the world can't by it
@vespertiliu
@vespertiliu 4 месяца назад
unfortunately, I found out that "hate" is the correct word to describe the feeling of not appreciating your art at all. People are deprived of the ability to enjoy the act of making art by putting themselves down constantly :( and many confirmed to me that they felt like they hated their own art :( Then the issue with "hating" is far bigger than the problem presented in this video of course. I totally agree with finding the right, positive voice, inside of you! For the last part, sadly I am very aware, that many many people can't count on other people's encouragement or kind words, and therefore, we also need to find that nurturing, encouraging voice in ourselves :)
@ziegunerweiser
@ziegunerweiser 4 месяца назад
quite right I completely agree hate is the right word and many people hate their work their art nothing is ever good enough there is a psychology to everything including being an artist one of the secrets of life is that strength has to come from within and happiness is a decision, like I can't be happy because ________ find a way to be happy just being yourself in that style like no other, that and never loose your sense of humor imagine the most amazing person you ever met is sitting next to you asking a series of questions - what do you want ? what's wrong ? what is it going to take to make it happen ? are you prepared to do what it takes to make it happen ? how are you going to fix it ? if you had to do it again would you have done it differently ? who does it bother you so much ? what is your dream ? what is exciting ? what is fun ? is there anything keeping you from transforming your life into your dream ? just be honest with your answers and write them down

It's depressing if your own work doesn't make any money. It has nothing to do with being good at it, or not. I've done a lot of research on other artists that kill themselves with guns, or over dose. A lot of them show the ups, and downs of their personal lives. Taking a break is a good thing. Live life. Enjoy your life. Listen to the birds. Creating art should be fun, and not to be fighting over the likes, or dislikes.😐

I completely agree with the last part of your comment! But, I disagree on the first part, because many young artists are dissatisfied with their art and that's not a matter of money at all. Sure, that can be a reason but not THE reason. My art never made me rich, still, I kept working with my art, and I love my art and my job. Even if at times I might not make any money at all with it! I have to ask you if you could kindly edit your comment and censor/change the part about artists unliving themselves. It's not very sensitive to talk so roughly about such a topic under a video where we also touch on mental health struggles. It could be very dangerous. So please, remove or censor that statement, or I'll need to remove your comment :( Thank you.

Hi @vespertiliu! First off, thank you for your work & dedication, always looking forward to your next video! As you transform some of your two page spreads into stickers and art prints, I was wondering - how you get around the fold so it doesn't show up in the final version, do you just scan them and edit them digitally or is it a different process?

The answer is, it is always ok. The important thing is to ask yourself “am I taking a break or am I giving up and avoiding to fight my fears. It’s the intention: If you take a break from making art with the intention to come back at it recharged and rested, then it’s healthy. If you feel the need to stop because you are too anxious or afraid, then you are not taking a break, you are ignoring a problem. And to ignore a problem is not self care, it’s exhausting. About the problem of comparing yourself to younger people, that is nonsense (although it’s pretty common). Do you know? If you keep going and practice, at some point, at your pace, you’ll be 60 and more skilled than you are now. If you give up, at some point you’ll be 60. We all grow old. There’s always gonna be younger people. I have collegues way younger and skilled then me, do you think I should give up my career? As for the last thing: I constantly get out of my comfort zone! I’m now working at 3 books for publishers that won’t include my characters 😅 so I must draw what is requested.

Actually, they do. People fall in love with their magic, and magicians fall in love with their tricks. That's what makes them pursue their passion. And the more they come up with new tricks, the more they fall in love with their craft.
