Why Do Former NBA Players Hate On Giannis?
This Video:
Gilbert Arenas recently came out and said some very… interesting things about Giannis Antetokounmpo. But this only continues to add on to the disrespect he continues to recieve from current and former NBA players. Why do they hate on Giannis and say these dumb things, is it xenophobia? In the case of Arenas I definitely wouldn’t rule that out. But this video even includes a bad take from Channing Frye and LeBron James after what they said about Giannis. These are some ridiculous takes that just keep adding on to the disrespect that the NBA’s best player is getting.

I think Embiid gets more love than the other three because: 1. He played NCAA basketball 2. His name is easy to pronounce and vaguely sounds like it COULD be American Those things are obviously super shallow, but they play a big role in a player's perceived marketability by the media titans like ESPN. More media coverage inevitably leads to more likability by casual fans and more clout within NBA discourse in general.

To me Giannis is the anti-kobe. Kobe was ultra serious (at least the media perceived him that way) in regards to the mamba mentality stuff. Giannis is wholesome as fuck but people mistake that for being soft. Kobe was an all time great and an era defining player but some take that too far. Kobe is not top 3 player of all time but based on media narratives many people will put him up there. Giannis is also an era defining player and will likely end his career in a lot peoples top ten lists however I fear he won't get his due because of the way the media treats him.

I've said it before, but how does Gilbert Arenas know basketball greatness? And not to disrespect Lebron, but people were saying he wasn't that impactful. He played minutes, he scored, the Lakers lost. Gilbert only played offense and he was inefficient at that. He wants to understand the game - the goal is to put the ball the the basket and to stop the other team from doing the same. Being inefficient means he was stopping his own team.

The comments related to his skill are likely coming from the fact that Giannis is a big man that plays like a guard, but he doesn't shoot pullup jumpers and do some other guard stuff like for example, KD. The trend of dissing his skills are usually coming from perimeter players. If Giannis played like traditional power forward or center he wouldn't have been hated as much. Giannis overlaps with their role but doesn't play like them, so they looked down on him. It threathens their ego because he had success without having the same skillset that they practiced.

Giannis's ring counts for more than any championship since the 2011 mavs. Small market, big star, stayed and built his team. His 1 championship means more than KD's 2 rings.

I think part of the reason is that he directly goes in the face of the narrative that ex-players claim that they were bigger, stronger and tougher than the players today. Giannis worked his ass off, went from skinny as all hell to one of the most built players in the league, and now bully’s some of the best defensive players of today. He’s come back from ankle sprains and other injuries like it’s nothing. He epitomizes the physical style of basketball older players claim to be missing from today’s game. Giannis would beat them at there own game, and they don’t like that. The other thing is that Giannis is good at everything those older players valued. Defence? Check. Slashing? Check. Finishing? Check. Leading? Check. He’s a poor shooter, but the 80s and 90s didn’t value shooters much, so the past players can’t criticize him for that, as they also weren’t good shooters. Hence why they have so many nonsensical arguments. They can’t validly critique him over anything without being hypocrites, so they flounder and comment on his toughness and work ethic, when he’s a league leader in both.

Giannis can easily go down in history as top 10. I am willing to say that within the next 7-8 years the bottom end of the top 10 and the high end of 10-20 (Steph, Kobe, Durant, Russell, Wilt etc) could be about to move down. Giannis is the best player in the world, and his peak is one of the highest we've ever seen. Only thing he needs is to maintain his prime.
