When I was in Tokyo I told this cute girl her dog was cute in Japanese. That worked way better than I expected. To the point I wasn't mentally prepared for it lol. So my advice is just try being a friendly person first and see how that goes. Don't come in hot and heavy or you'll creep her out. You are a complete stranger at that point, you know.

I believe there are the "healthy" chat-up and the 'mendokusai' ones. So I think it depends on the person, ocasion, place, context... Even so, if everything favors the "healthy" chat-up and you are being close/conservative and making yourself a hard person to interact with, then... =/ GG

@@SkyRocket159 Cut the cognitive dissonance. Having a conversation is one thing. Having it lead to asking someone on a date (which is the first step to marriage and family building, a serious obligation) is another thing entirely. Westerns are unrealistic and thinks relationships are a game, a fun pastime to get their selfish fix on. This is why divorce rates are so high and why so many women have children without fathers. And why would a westerner be right to be angry at a girl that doesn't appreciate talking? Is there something wrong with not liking to talk to a complete stranger? Sounds dangerous, and rightfully so, she should be afraid. She doesn't know you, random foreigner. She doesn't know the harm you could potentially do. Westerners are the only ones who think it's perfectly acceptable to date and ask strangers out on dates. The rest of the world date people they've gotten to know through school, family friends, religion, work, through hobby clubs and such. Which makes sense, because you can get to know someone's character, whether they are a worthy life partner, and not some superficial piece of meat.

I'd say big busy cities are not very conductive to on street chatting up in general. You're busy, in a hurry, in more compacted spaces and people are just hustling about. I can imagine mid sized cities, like Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka where the pace and hustle is a bit less intense just might be better. Applies in general. LA wasn't great for that either and I'd say shared events are definitely more desirable for that. With how crowded Tokyo is, can't imagine that helps matters.

I think this video is more of like picking up girls on the streets and less about randomly chatters with someone. It all depends on culture also, for example in Indonesia it is quite normal to have random chatters with strangers on the street, but even here picking up girls like that, to the point of pestering and stalking them is still considered rude and people would even steps in to stop you.
@GenerationNextNextNext

I think that she is talking about something like asking girls out on dates or cat-calling. I am American and I personally hate our culture of encouraging people to talk to random strangers, especially when it comes to dating. I prefer the Japanese way of getting to know people through shared common interests and events. The American way is so superficial. People only like how you appear and ask you out without even really knowing you. I can't trust my heart, body, and soul to just anyone, not even meeting alone with them on a first date.

Without even watching your video (yet.. sorry ;P) I'll say it. The way to meet nice girls is NOT to "nampa"(pick-up) but just to be nice and funny and friendly to all around you. Good people will pick up on that, and naturally want to talk to you. The problem is getting the opportunity to be with nice people... there has to be some social bond, absolute strangers will just walk past and never know you exist.

I was never the type of guy to chat up girls on the street until coming to Japan. A lot of it was just to overcome my fear of rejection. Nanpa used to be more open and accepted in the 90s and early 2000s but younger Japanese girls, particularly Gen Z, if they’re the typical girl they don’t like it so much. Much of my interactions just start if I get a look from someone or if I’m on the elevator. It should feel natural. I still get nervous tbh but often we both end up having good conversation even if we don’t exchange info. Tried dating apps like Bumble but I only get a like once every month (literally 😂) and an actual match once or twice a month. Bars can be expensive. So with how things are in Japan and my lack of popularity on dating sites, I’m rather stuck with chatting up girls at random or going to bars. Really helps shy people to get over that wall though. 😉 Cafes are good too. Much more calm and relaxing than the street.

"Even if he is handsome, we cannot communicate, soo..." - Stop the cap lol They absolutely WOULD agree to chat with a guy if he looked like Brad Pitt or Leo DiCaprio, or whatever their "perfect" image of a "foreign guy" is in their heads. So I call 100% BS on that response and it was mainly to avoid risking to make themselves sound "indecent" or smth of that sort. That aside, problem with meeting on the streets is that I am ONLY able to see what she looks like, I literally know nothing about her. I am ofc speaking as a guy who is only interested in something meaningful and in a quality wife material types, not one night bedroom fun. She could be the most gorgeous mythical creature to ever exist on this planet, yet with the kind of baggage that makes it practically impossible to build what I am aiming at. Most people that we are surrounded with when we go into a public space probably are not suitable for us when it comes to anything meaningful, be it simple meaningful conversations or actual deep connections and relationships. If it was THAT easy to find somebody you are compatible with to build something in the long-term then everyone (or vast majority of people) would be doing it and we see that it is clearly not the case. In case of Japan, this can be a even worse due to the terrible work-life balance culture. I think the best thing for guys to do is to simply stop worrying about these things too much and be more focused on their own goals and purposes, but at the same time keeping their eyes open. Men with a purpose are always attractive regardless of the culture, but looking and smelling good while doing so can also take you THIS much further in that avenue though, so be mindful of that as well. Opportunities can present themselves sometimes in the most random and unlikely situations. I am going to Japan for 3 weeks in October. I am definitely gonna have my hands full as it is due to it being my first ever trip there and such, but I will see what I can find out and discover on my own once I have my boots on the ground over there. :)

This comment section is full of incels, did any of the top commenters whining about "How are you supposed to get a date then?" actually watch the video and what the women were talking about? This is specifically about nampa. They literally talk about guys who spend their entire day chatting up every single woman at major train stations or places witha lot of foot traffick, hoping that one of them is gracious enough to give them their LINE. And this happens to pretty much every woman in a major city at least once a week, if not more. Imagine you are going about your day, just wanting to go shopping or run errands or meet a friend and you have to battle through 5 guys with the same stupid-ass opening line of "Hey onee-san, you are very cute" or "Oi, nee-san, you wanna play?" and the danger of them actually following you for minutes. Yeah, doesn't sound that nice, does it? They are objectified in 99% of the cases and have good reason to believe that these guys' intentions aren't exactly the best - it's strictly about sex and nothing else. People (not just women) are more open to being approached in a space of shared interests. It's far easier and makes people feel far safer if someone approaches you trying to talk about a subject you both are clearly interested in and not just because they think you're a piece of meat to stick your dick into. Actually wild that some guys do not understand this and immediately feel like the entire female population of planet Earth threatened them.

Right. I'm pretty sure no girl anywhere enjoys having her personal space violated or being followed relentlessly. This is not rocket science. All the guys saying "How do you expect to meet someone?": Time, place, occasion. If she's out on the street minding her own business, you can gauge interest in a short, simple interaction, like complimenting her clothes or just a nod and a smile. If she's avoiding looking at you, that's a "Please leave me alone". If she looks at you a lot and smiles back, that is interest and the green light to keep it going. But if she wants to leave, DON'T keep her from leaving, DON'T follow her. Say it was nice meeting her and give your number if you'd like to talk to her again. *She is perfectly entitled to not want to meet anybody, no matter how much they want to meet her.* She has a life outside of you. Respecting that will go VERY far with any woman. If she's at somewhere that is _inherently social_ like a bar or a karaoke gathering or something, she'll probably be more interested in being approached in general. Nobody goes to those places without accepting they might get hit on, and are either interested in that or at least kind about turning someone down. Which, no fellas, does not equate to her saying flat-out "No thank you". Japanese women in particular (Though this goes for all women to some degree) are socialized to not outright refuse. If it's not an enthusiastic "yes", it's a "no". Women can 100% tell when a guy has a certain activity on their mind. She's a person, not a Real Doll toy. Lastly: Rejection happens. Don't take it too personally. Again, she has a life outside of you. Her dad could've just died. She could be interested in someone else. Anyone can be the victim of bad timing. Take no for an answer and move on. Chances are that she will remember you accepting "no" gracefully and will have a more positive view on you in general.

Seems like everyone in Japan says they cannot speak English. It is taught in schools from 3rd to 12th grade, but no one can even carry on a simple conversation. Talk about a total systemic failure. Why does this continue decade after decade? What a waste of time for the students.
@gordonbgraham
@gordonbgraham 9 месяцев назад
It's taught from junior high school. Some elementary schools introduce basic English, like days of the week, colours and greetings, but that's about it. The reason most Japanese don't speak English is they have no need for it. Just like Canadians in English Canada can't speak French despite having had French lessons from elementary school. There's no need for it, so they don't take it seriously and like most things that people are forced to do...they don't like it.

Gaijin-san, leave your feminism rhetoric for the west, this is Japan. You don't talk to a random woman in the street to flirt. Japan is a conservative society and dating only happens within a person's social or professional circle.
